Canon EOS 1100D review

This review presents the camera itself. Canon 1100D body. The prefix body means that this is a camera without a lens, and Canon 1100D kit - that the kit comes with a lens. Usually Canon 1100D comes with a kit lens - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II. On sale you can find cameras with lenses Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 without image stabilization. If you are choosing a camera with a lens, then I recommend choosing the IS II version.

Canon EOS 1100D is amateur cam, from which you can not require any serious indicators of quality and performance, but at the same time, the Canon EOS 1100D is great for amateur shooting. The camera was released in 2011.

The main features of the EOS 1100D, which are worth paying attention to:

The EOS 1100D is an amateur camera made mostly of plastic. It is lightweight, with the EOS 1100D weighing less than 500g. It is not difficult to take such a camera with you on vacation, various events, etc. Usually, professional cameras are quite heavy and do not have automatic modes, so I do not recommend expensive cameras for beginners. The EOS 1100D has a number of presets such as portrait, sports, macro, and more. If you are looking for a camera to replace a conventional digital camera (soap dish), then the EOS 1100D can be a worthy replacement. Of course, there is a lot to squeeze out of the EOS 1100D DSLR camera.

EOS 1100D has on board 12.2 megapixels, which is not much and not little, but just for the ordinary tasks of an amateur photographer. With 12.2 megapixels, you can easily print pictures up to and including A3. I generally do not recommend chasing megapixels. I still use my 6 megapixel camera Nikon D40 and I don’t feel any discomfort. More details in the section Battle of Megapixels.

EOS 1100D - Can shoot at 3 frames per second. True, there are many subtleties here. When using RAW quality images, the camera's rate of fire drops to 2 frames per second, which is very, very low. Only works slower Canon 1000D, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro and her younger models. The speed of the camera is greatly affected by the frame buffer capacity. The buffer is where the snapshot is placed before being written to the card. Canon EOS 1100D in JPEG format can buffer 9 frames, in RAW mode - only 5. Note: if you enable all additional functions, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at long exposures, the buffer will be able to hold 3 RAW files and only one JPEG file. After the buffer overflows, BUSY appears in the viewfinder or display, which is very annoying.

Canon 1100D can use ISO 100 to 6400, non-expandable. Auto ISO control available. True, you can select ISO only in whole steps: 100, 200, 400, 800, etc. The camera cannot boast of a silent picture at high ISO values. At low ISO, the image quality is quite good. Here Example shot at maximum ISO 6400 without processing.

The camera has a built-in flash, which is sometimes very useful. The camera’s display is large enough. 2.7 in, and 230.000 points.

Canon EOS 1100D sample photo

Canon EOS 1100D sample photo

The Canon 1100D uses 9-point focus, the center point of the cross-shaped type. This is quite enough for many tasks. Auto focus is very dependent on the lens and shooting conditions. The Canon 1100D supports three focus modes.

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D can shoot video in 720p, 1280 × 720 quality for up to 17 minutes, or until the video file is larger than 4GB. You can set the video recording rate to 29.97 or 25 fps. This quality is quite enough for viewing on a computer. Personally, I don't like it when the video weighs very, very much and takes up half of the hard drive. Please note that the camera does not support control of video settings such as aperture, excerpt, the video itself always uses the automatic settings suggested by the camera. When shooting video, autofocus is available when you press the shutter button halfway. Auto focus for the video wants the best.

Canon 1100D has a mode live view, this is the ability to take pictures like a regular digital camera. True, auto focus in this mode is very, very slow.

The Canon 1100D has a lot of different useful things, such as managing image quality, different image settings, an interesting feature of the priority of light tones.

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D sample photo

The camera uses SD cards (SD, SDHC, SDXC), in fact, you can use a card of any size. A JPEG file L weighs about 7MB, a RAW (CR2) file weighs from 14 to 25MB. Such a huge weight surprised me.

Personal experience

You can control the Canon 1100D with one hand. All buttons are located to the right of the display. This is quite unusual, but does not cause any inconvenience. I liked the camera, simple, with an accessible interface. True, focusing on Live View is very slow. The camera normally measures exposure, even with manual lenses. You can always find fault with something, but it’s better to remember that important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

Conclusions:

Canon EOS 1100D Is a decent entry-level amateur camera. The camera is attracted by the possibility of shooting video.

Please advise the optics on this camera. There are Canon EF-S 18-55mm F / 3.5-5.6 IS II and Canon EF 50mm F / 1.8 II. I would like to choose a lens for shooting groups of people (so as not to fall out and not blur) and a lens for portraiture (I understand that the Canon EF 50mm F / 1.8 II is more / less suitable). The budget for 1 lens is up to 8000 UAH. Thanks.
    Thought of Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM and Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16 mm f / 2.8.
Please comment if possible - alternatives with more affordable proposals.

It’s better to shoot with an amateur camera now than to dream about a professional all my life

  • Yuriy75

I own this camera for 1,5 years, an excellent device. Its denet is worth. Recently I had to bomb him (to shoot the wedding of my friends), I never worked for hire, but I had a camera with a whale lens, a flash and two fixes for portraits worked with a bang.
Clients are satisfied; my fear went away (I was afraid to tarnish the reputation of prof. Photographers), I shot it with equal effect, followed by the correction of shadows, noise and sharpness. So I can say that the camera is suitable for such activities. :) Friends own cameras 600D and 650D do not see the difference in quality. And I found out that the carcass is insignificant, the front focus is very nervous in working with high-aperture optics, I am struggling with this by using the screen (focus focus using the contrast method), but despite everything the camera is beautiful. For beginners, you can’t imagine a better idea. While the skills and style are polished, the camera will work out a resource, and then just buy a new one of the class that is needed. Acquaintances bought Nikon D7000 on credit, so that it’s no worse than people, they sometimes take pictures of children on the machine, at some event I asked them why without a camera, they say that it’s hard to wear. And my 1100 is not a burden to me even with a bag of lenses and a flash. Draw conclusions :)

What were your lenses? For a portrait and for general photos? Is there a universal?

      • Denis

so this is a 2014 review
but in general the fact that the difference between 1100D and 650D is not visible, the argument is not in favor of 650D

If we are talking about typical scenes and normal lighting, then, provided that the equipment is working properly, you will get about the same result with negligible difference on any camera - from a budget DSLR to a cool medium-format monster. The key contribution here is your photographic skill, which allows you to reasonably ignore the capabilities of the equipment.
The contribution of the lens is much less - a certain focal, aperture or special characteristics allow you to shoot a particular scene at all, but modern lenses with the same characteristics differ slightly from each other. If I need a conventional face portrait, then it will be Meike 85 / 1.8, Canon 85 / 1.2 or Yongnuo 100/2 - the “quality” of the picture is determined by the straightness of my hands and the beauty of the photogenic model. And the beautiful landscape under the luxurious light will impress me no matter what it is filmed with - a wide angle of a standard whale, a manual fix or a specialized wide-angle. Somewhere more chromatite, somewhere less, somewhere the corners pulled, but somewhere the details are distinguishable - for the vast majority of photos the Maldives and the whale are better than the barracks and 11-24 / 4L.
Well, the contribution of the camera is very small, its bells and whistles create more convenience for the photographer or provide support for certain technologies. We value convenience and are ready to pay for it according to our capabilities. And everything else is from the evil one.

good evening! help decide on a choice. canon 1100D, canon 100D which is better. it will be my first DSLR. I read a bunch of reviews, reviews and still can not choose. I thought if I earn a camera I’ll buy it more serious, but for now I need to learn how to make it simple.

And in order for the squirrel to shoot so large and the other animals, which lens do you need to buy?
And if I understood correctly with the tilt and shift of the optical axis for shooting landscapes and architecture?
    Of course for eos 1100d

  • Catherine

Hello. Will a 50mm lens fit this camera?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, it does.

  • Eugene

Briefly about the camera ... I bought this camera for about two months, which I now regret, I threw 15000 thousand in vain ... Maybe at the beginning of the release they also made a good “filling” for the camera, but now the quality of the photo is absolutely not happy ...

    • Alexey

And what exactly do not like? Which lens? He suits me, he justifies his money. Maybe this is because I'm not a photographer, but an amateur? ;)

  • Eugene

As many argue that some kind of masterpiece can be removed with any little bit of a camera, the quality of the picture (with the correct exposure) will not improve on this device. You cannot jump higher than your head ... And the processing of a photo on a computer can really be considered the quality of a photo? Of course not ... The quality of the picture is determined in "raw" and only in this form, and not in the processed ....

    • Vladimir

so it is. but in most cases the end result (if it’s a commercial shoot) is processed photos. and here already 90% of the skills of the photographer and retoucher as pictures

    • anonym

Well yes!? And the artists that also draw one to one ... yes, and in general there is a simple photograph, there is an artistic photo ... you catch the difference ..

  • Anatoly

Gee-gee ... read some questions! Why do you buy DSLRs ??? !!! Buy a soap dish and don’t mind your desk .. well, DSLRs don’t have a masterpiece button ... a photo is taken by a photographer, not a camera.

  • Denis

for some reason, when I open the built-in flash, even in M mode, auto-iso = 800 is set. Without a flash, auto-ISO can be on the same parameters 100. I suspect that there is something in the settings, but I can’t find it anywhere

    • Denis

I read the instructions, ISO must be manually adjusted with the flash, the metering prompts.
the question changes - is it the same for all Canon? strange that this serious flaw of the 1100d is not written anywhere. and for an amateur with a built-in flash, one mode remains - AUTO (a smart device may not use the flash and take a normal photo, or where it is needed to turn it on and make ISO800), because while you select the ISO for the shooting conditions, people will start to worry, and the child will run away altogether

      • Denis

Oops, it seems everything is not so bad
Aperture priority mode must be set, only in this case the auto-iso works with puff. Well then, normal, relieved)))

  • Paul

Hello! I read your blog, a lot of good and informative. Thank you so much! I want advice from knowledgeable people, that's why I'm writing here for the first time. I have a Cenon 1100d, bought about 1.5 years ago with a kit 18-55 IS II. Now I decided to sell the kit lens. I bought 18-135 IS STM, the so-called "raskitovka", all buzzing, only embarrassing that according to the serial number the production date is January 2016. Were they released after that date? And one more thing, a little backlash in the proboscis, is this, as for the new, the norm? (the rings rotate smoothly and well). What is your advice on carcass settings? BF and FF seem to be normal, on the weekend I'll check it even more accurately on the ruler. Would you like to know your opinion on this ratio of Cenon 1100d + EF-S 18-135 IS STM? (I know that the STM series is for 650d). Thanks in advance to everyone.

    • Pastor

We bought an excellent lens. Despite the fact that I purchased it after 24-70 2.8l, 17-40 4l, 24-105 4lis and other more expensive glasses, I was not disappointed in it. 18-135 IS STM came out as for me an almost ideal staff for a crop, if aperture is not needed. Sharpness is excellent, distortions are not so frightening, at least - not a lens, but a fairy tale. Stub is excellent, and autofocus is good. Autofocus surprised me. The speed is almost comparable to the elks, although the same stm motor in 40 2.8 turns noticeably slower, although there is a fix, and here is a zoom.
True, I did not try it at 1100d - by the time I bought the lens I had already sold the camera. But I think there will be no problems. At 500d and 650d the lens behaves perfectly. It also focuses on 650d in life-view and video.
Judging by the site's data, the Canon lens is still in production (beginning June 24, 2013).
The backlash of the trunk is barely noticeable in almost all lenses with a trunk. I even have a 24-70 2.8 small play, so for an inexpensive crop lens this is generally in the order of things.

I am writing to catch up ... I also bought myself a filter for this Marumi UV WPC lens (water protector - drops will drain and cleaning of such glass is easier). After reading the tests of Polish colleagues http://www.optyczne.pl/5.22-Inne_testy-Test_filtr%C3%B3w_UV_Marumi_77_mm_WPC_UV.html, I realized that I need maximum glass transmission and protection (and so 3,5-5,6), I did not pay attention to UV, because I think UV does not exist for such money (simple marketing). I looked at Hoya - the price is a little expensive, if I reach the tree and the full-frame one day, then I will think about it. Maybe someone will find this post useful, because according to tests, this filter has the most transparent glass (for example, I have never seen UV glasses with transparent glasses on climbers ;-)). If something is wrong, correct it ...

  • Paul

There was a bit of time today. checked BF and FF tricks - everything is fine. I checked it on a linear table at an angle of 45 degrees at FRs 18, 85 and 135, at 135 it seemed a bit that in one of the shots the focus went up, but was within the line, but then I adjusted the angle and took a series of shots and everything was ok. The series consisted of 2 pictures.

  • Anastasia

Hello, tell me please, I want to buy the first 1100 or 600d SLR? Which is better? Does the number of megapixels affect the quality of the photo ?? or is it just a matter of lens and photographer?

    • Lynx

      better 650d or 100d.
influences, but in your case - not significant.
      it’s all about the photographer.

    • Paul

In principle, I bought my 1100d when the price for it dropped to the desired level, and the dollar in relation to the hryvnia gave an impetus. Now I read a bunch of tests, a bunch of reviews, I held in my hands 650, 700, 70, and even 5 mark 2 (all this is a miracle for my friends and acquaintances). My opinion is that if you shoot a video, then of course 650 (but not 600) and higher, and if photos and a bit of video for an amateur - 1100 is more than enough! Of course, you can immediately take the 5th mark and pontanut - and now the question is - do you need it? Are you an experienced professional? A person takes pictures! I must say right away that the kit lens 18-55 is worse than the 18-135 STM and other similar ones, and here is also the question - do you need it? After the time spent from 18-55, I didn't have enough telezoom, at first I looked at the 55-250 side, then at the tamrons (whoever needs it, I can describe purely subjective conclusions), but still the winner was Canon ef-s 18-135 STM ... From this conclusion, if you are an amateur, then take 1100, and if you want to constantly shoot video - then 650 with a STM lens. For photos, better than 1100 will be IMHO! (PS when I bought my 1100, my hands were scratching to buy Nikon D90, but the fact that all friends and acquaintances are sitting on canons - I took this unit).

      • Denis

his colors are so-so. compared with my D5100. my orange turns out to be orange, and from the 1100D it turns out to be red

        • Paul

Denis, everything is fine with my 1100D - the colors are natural. Red is red, orange is orange. On the contrary, it seems to me that Nikons paint the picture a little, due to this it seems more contrasting (IMHO my opinion, because now Nikon's people will come running here ;-)). I had this on my non-mirror Fujifilm FinePix S5600 (it still works).

          • Denis

yes, even with the D5100, the colors do not please me) on the 50mm fix, everything is fine, but with 18-55VR everything is bad (external flash to the ceiling, aperture is different, ISO is any, even 100)

          • Michael

You can not argue, the colors lie on both, just in different directions. The next question is about taste and felt-tip pens.

            • Paul

              I agree 100%!

  • Nicholas

The Canon 1100 camera I want to buy the Tamron AF Tamron AF 28-75 mm f2.8 lens. Who will say anything about the appropriateness of this tandem?

    • Oleg

there will not be a wide angle, but with portraits everything will be fine

    • Valery A.

I don’t know about canon, but on the Nikon D5100 it’s quite advisable, IMHO.

    • anonym

It would be nice to clarify for what purpose.

      • Nicholas

There is a standard kit 18-55. Often I take pictures of nature, various events, in school kindergartens, acquaintances did not pay much attention and began to invite me to weddings, and as it were, they began to miss. I can’t say that it’s bad but there is no long focus, and I want a brighter lens, but the budget is modest, and the prices are space, so the choice fell on a tamron, but there are a lot of horror stories about a tamron. So toil with a choice. Yes, thanks for the response, to be honest I did not expect that I would immediately draw attention.

        • Oleg

This Swab will be SIGNIFICANTly narrower. 28 mm crop from Canon can limit you to any general plans or scenes that require a lot of space. Instead, get a fast aperture and 75mm for great portraits. But there is a slippery moment with an unstable quality of Tampon products, because the copy from the copy may differ from them. In addition, when buying a used one, there is a risk of running into a dead lens. It is necessary to carefully test the specific lenses offered, and it is quite possible you will get photographic happiness for inexpensive :)

        • Oleg

it will be difficult to shoot large groups of people indoors

          • Nicholas

            KITA will use as shirik.

          • Nicholas

Or maybe for versatility take tamron-17-50-mm-f-2-8. On the crop 28-80 will be

Tell me, who knows, from 18-55 everything was ok, I shot the video without hesitation. But at 18-135, when focusing the video in the LV, the diaphragm starts to open and close (brightens), and it remains on the video. Maybe I moved something from the settings, I've been looking for an hour and nothing ...?

    • Paul

In response, silence, I know about ExpSIM, but was it all good before?

    • Oleg

In what mode are you shooting, M or semi-automatic / automatic?

      • Paul

Video mode on the 1100D is not the M settings per se.

      • Oleg

Sorry. I forgot what the mode twister looks like.
There is such a button accordion about the exposure error when the viewfinder eyepiece is not closed. But you say that at 18-55 everything is buzzing.
        No ideas:)

  • Nicholas

The dark lens on the long end of the world is not enough - it is dark, in the short light it gets more light, it is my opinion, but I don’t understand this

  • Novel

    Good day to all.
I seem to have read enough :) As a child I dabbled with Zenith ... it is now the 122nd plus lenses and a tripod, rings ... "everything that is acquired." And there is the Colpix soap dish, which is dead. Now I am not busy with photography, but the soap dish naturally does not suit me. The problem with the development of photographic films today ... That is why I look at the mirror figure.
Based on what I have read, I hesitate, because I did not use them ... and it is difficult to compare the quality of their shooting with Zenith. Plus, I would like to use the lenses from Zenit with benefit, through the adapter, as I understand it.
Since my wife is far from technology, and I am not always there ... the function of pre-settings attracts me.
    Conclusion: it seems like I'm looking at 60 D b 50 D bady ... and in 1100 D presets ...

    That's why I ask for advice :)

    • Oleg

60 or 50. Presets (portrait-landscape-sport-night-auto, etc.) are complete garbage. Set the aperture priority mode (Av) and shoot. Read a couple of pages of information about the IPIG and everything will be clear. Point.

      • Michael

The wife, even after reading, may not understand ...

        • Oleg

No, well, if so, then of course :)
The smallest possible aperture is a portrait, aperture 8 is a landscape. People in active movement - Tv - 1 / 125-1 / 250 and beyond.
But if this is not just everything, then a good compact (soap box) is better

      • Novel

Oleg, IPIG, what is this abbreviation?

        • Artem

          depth of field

        • Oleg

Depth of field. For example, an object is at a distance of 3 meters, and sharp (at a certain value of the aperture value) is everything from 2,8 to 3,2 meters. And the wider the aperture (the numerical value is less), the smaller the depth of field.
Would you read on the Internet (I advise)

    • Michael

At 50 and 60, it seems like there are also full presets. Look at the instructions, worry in vain. The quality of shooting is a thing in itself; it is not very clear what you mean. The site has examples of photos, look. When shooting at 50, 60 and 1100 get close results (if not bother).
