Canon EOS 1100D review

Canon EOS 1100D review

This review presents the camera itself. Canon 1100D body. The prefix body means that this is a camera without a lens, and Canon 1100D kit - that the kit comes with a lens. Usually Canon 1100D comes with a kit lens - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II. On sale you can find cameras with lenses Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 without image stabilization. If you are choosing a camera with a lens, then I recommend choosing the IS II version.

Canon EOS 1100D is amateur cam, from which you can not require any serious indicators of quality and performance, but at the same time, the Canon EOS 1100D is great for amateur shooting. The camera was released in 2011.

The main features of the EOS 1100D, which are worth paying attention to:

The EOS 1100D is an amateur camera made mostly of plastic. It is lightweight, with the EOS 1100D weighing less than 500g. It is not difficult to take such a camera with you on vacation, various events, etc. Usually, professional cameras are quite heavy and do not have automatic modes, so I do not recommend expensive cameras for beginners. The EOS 1100D has a number of presets such as portrait, sports, macro, and more. If you are looking for a camera to replace a conventional digital camera (soap dish), then the EOS 1100D can be a worthy replacement. Of course, there is a lot to squeeze out of the EOS 1100D DSLR camera.

EOS 1100D has on board 12.2 megapixels, which is not much and not little, but just for the ordinary tasks of an amateur photographer. With 12.2 megapixels, you can easily print pictures up to and including A3. I generally do not recommend chasing megapixels. I still use my 6 megapixel camera Nikon D40 and I don’t feel any discomfort. More details in the section Battle of Megapixels.

EOS 1100D - Can shoot at 3 frames per second. True, there are many subtleties here. When using RAW quality images, the camera's rate of fire drops to 2 frames per second, which is very, very low. Only works slower Canon 1000D, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro and her younger models. The speed of the camera is greatly affected by the frame buffer capacity. The buffer is where the snapshot is placed before being written to the card. Canon EOS 1100D in JPEG format can buffer 9 frames, in RAW mode - only 5. Note: if you enable all additional functions, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at long exposures, the buffer will be able to hold 3 RAW files and only one JPEG file. After the buffer overflows, BUSY appears in the viewfinder or display, which is very annoying.

Canon 1100D can use ISO 100 to 6400, non-expandable. Auto ISO control available. True, you can select ISO only in whole steps: 100, 200, 400, 800, etc. The camera cannot boast of a silent picture at high ISO values. At low ISO, the image quality is quite good. Here Example shot at maximum ISO 6400 without processing.

The camera has a built-in flash, which is sometimes very useful. The camera’s display is large enough. 2.7 in, and 230.000 points.

Canon EOS 1100D sample photo

Canon EOS 1100D sample photo

The Canon 1100D uses 9-point focus, the center point of the cross-shaped type. This is quite enough for many tasks. Auto focus is very dependent on the lens and shooting conditions. The Canon 1100D supports three focus modes.

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D can shoot video in 720p, 1280 × 720 quality for up to 17 minutes, or until the video file is larger than 4GB. You can set the video recording rate to 29.97 or 25 fps. This quality is quite enough for viewing on a computer. Personally, I don't like it when the video weighs very, very much and takes up half of the hard drive. Please note that the camera does not support control of video settings such as aperture, excerpt, the video itself always uses the automatic settings suggested by the camera. When shooting video, autofocus is available when you press the shutter button halfway. Auto focus for the video wants the best.

Canon 1100D has a mode live view, this is the ability to take pictures like a regular digital camera. True, auto focus in this mode is very, very slow.

Canon 1100D sample photo

The Canon 1100D has a lot of different useful things, such as managing image quality, different image settings, an interesting feature of the priority of light tones.

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D sample photo

The camera uses SD cards (SD, SDHC, SDXC), in fact, you can use a card of any size. A JPEG file L weighs about 7MB, a RAW (CR2) file weighs from 14 to 25MB. Such a huge weight surprised me.

Personal experience

You can control the Canon 1100D with one hand. All buttons are located to the right of the display. This is quite unusual, but does not cause any inconvenience. I liked the camera, simple, with an accessible interface. True, focusing on Live View is very slow. The camera normally measures exposure, even with manual lenses. You can always find fault with something, but it’s better to remember that important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

Help determine the choice between: CANON EOS 1100D Double Kit 18-55DC + 75-300DC or Canon EOS-1100D 18-55IS SLR camera + lens m. buy in

    • Vera

Julia, I also faced this choice. But since I have no experience of dealing with SLR cameras at all, I stopped at the usual Kit (18-55). In addition, the 75-300 lens from the set is a telephoto lens, to which you will definitely have to adapt and it is more difficult for them to shoot ... I read a lot of articles and came to the conclusion that one lens will be more than enough for the first time!

    • Mykhaylo

When buying the Canon 1100 (we call it Canon EOS Rebel T3), you should pay attention to whether the lenses have the IS function - image stabilization, image stabilization). If there is, the letters IS are present in the lens name. This is especially important for telephoto cameras - lenses with a focus of 200-300. I didn't know that, I bought a 75-300 lens separately. No image stabilization. Then he adjusted for a long time to work with him. Of course, over time everything works out - but at first I simply could not take sharp pictures with a telephoto camera, without a tripod. Due to the lack of image stabilization function.

    • anonym

Take a double set. Practice a little and everything will work out. The presence of a stabilizer does not always help out; it is suitable only for shooting stationary objects.

  • Pauline

Hello! Going to buy a Canon EOS 1100D. Will the Helios 44m-4 lens fit on it? If so, which lens to buy additionally?

    • anonym

Helios 44m-4 is suitable with an adapter M42-EOS. If there is 18-55mm, you can not buy anything, but learn from it, then it will become clear what to buy. If you need to take something far away, you can buy 55-250mm, a very inexpensive lens and with good dexterity.

    • anonym

      an adapter is needed

  • hard

Polina. Yes it will do, but only through specials. adapter. It costs about 500 rubles. For the house, I think the whale is normal (although a bit dark). For "art" you have helios. For nature, you need a telephoto.

  • Dmitriy

Hello! I have a Canon EOS 1100D. Will the Nikon 70-300 lens fit on it

    • hard

This is somewhat more complicated. I think it's not a problem to find an adapter and stick in the optics. In modern non-manual optics, as a rule, the depth of field is regulated by the camera itself. The autofocus capabilities will be resolved, I think it's not critical, but not the ability to adjust the aperture ... I don't know if there are adapters with this function.

  • Alexey

Need help!! Is there a fast sync mode with flash in the D1100, if not, in which cameras canon is it?

    • anonym

yes there is an e-ttl 2 called

    • Yuriy75

It all depends on the flash, if you do not stint and buy a Canon 430EX II, then quick synchronization will be available when you activate the corresponding mode in the flash. If you buy a Chinese analog, then the minimum shutter speed will be 1 / 200s, in principle, you can also live.

  • Julia

Tell me, which camera is better to take the Canon 350D or Canon EOS 1100D Kit?

    • vitya

      1100 newer much shoot video

    • anonym

plus to the above on iso 1600 photos are of acceptable quality.

  • CuHonTuK

Have a nice time of day Arkady! Reading your reviews I read, I would like to see a couple of lines in the camera reviews on how they are friends with manual optics.

  • Vladimir

Good to all! Tell me, I’m taking pictures in the 5x and 10x zoom modes and the photo comes out as usual, as if I weren’t moving in. Maybe in the settings it’s where, exactly?

    • Lynx

the problem is in the photographer.

      • Vladimir

I watch all the humor? Not to help, to suggest, I just bought this camera ... What kind of people are they?

        • Arkady Shapoval

You just asked the question incorrectly. The camera cannot shoot with 5x or 10x zoom, the zoom is set using the ring on the lens, and so the focal lengths are indicated. 5x and 10x - this can only be an approximation while viewing the footage.

          • Vladimir

Perhaps the question was raised incorrectly, but I said that I just bought this unit and after the soap dish is complicated. The essence of my question is that in the photo gallery in the upper right corner there are two buttons, one of them lies not only on the taken photo, but before the picture on the display, it also brings the distance to the object, and the photo turns out to be normal. The instructions for the button say: AF point / zoom button. You have a photo of a squirrel on a tree. How close did it get? I have an EFS 18-55mm MACRO 0.25m / 0.8ft lens

            • Arkady Shapoval

Now everything is clear. In focus mode, these buttons simply zoom in on the image for precise focusing. The 18-55 lens has 3x zoom and cannot “zoom in” the image very much, this is its limitation. And the camera has no digital zoom. The squirrel was shot with a telephoto lens, it seems 85 / 1,8. Most likely, you expected more from a DSLR, but alas, zoom ratio is a serious limitation of such cameras.

        • Lynx

And I see you, how a considerable number of people asking similar questions, did not even bother to open-read the instructions?

    • anonym

Apparently we are talking about working in live view mode. In this mode, there is an increase in the rectangle in which focusing occurs. Indispensable for manual focusing.

  • Vladimir

Thank you very much Arkady for a detailed explanation. Have to save for the best lens.

    • Marat

It's just that everyone forgot to tell you that zooming occurs with the help of a lens. Rotate it. Just do not twist)))

  • Alex

Please tell me which adapter is needed for the Helios 44k-4 lens on Kenon 1100d?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Pentax-Canon EOS Helios-44K-4 has a Pentax K mount

  • Jury

Long chose an entry-level DSLR. Already decided a year old to raise money for something more serious, but on the occasion I took the 1100D expensively. I read your review and decided that I was in a hurry! In your opinion, an advanced user can squeeze a lot out of it, which means it doesn’t shine for me! For all other devices, you advise lenses, and this probably will not help. Very sorry! (Despite the fact that I am a fan of your wonderful site!)

    • Ivan

Forgive me for getting in, but I think you are upset in vain. The camera is quite good. In my opinion, it’s much more logical to spend a little less on the camera, and spend the rest of the money on the lens. Therefore, now you can take a telephoto lens, for example a 70-300 sigma, an overview of which is on this site. It costs only 5000 rubles, and the quality is quite decent. Yes, and what I'm telling, just look at the photos on this device in the review. Take a look at their photos on other sites on the Internet. I myself am sitting on Nikon, but I bought such a daughter, including in order to see what kind of beast this canon is. In my opinion, an excellent camera, in some ways it even beats my advanced Nikon d80. For a beginner you can’t imagine any better!

      • Jury

Thank you reassured! And I’ll buy a lens at an adequate price.

        • Dmitriy

Take a closer look at the aperture 50mm 1,8 canon, the new 3500 rubles, used for 2000 rubles, can be used as a portrait, it’s a good wash on the open diaphragm.

          • Jury

            Thank you!

      • Jury

Sorry, I didn’t understand and did not find this lens. I found one for Nikon

  • Tala

I’m looking at this model. Compared to my old Olympus SP 510, it’s certainly a bomb, almost a professional camera ^ _ ^ In addition, a big plus is the built-in battery. In mine - ordinary finger-type batteries, which you get tired of changing. Only a little bit expensive. Although the price range is quite large, an average of 3 thousand is somewhere. I want to try to take out a loan by installment through a rocket so that it doesn’t come out very expensive

    • Jury

I shot Canon SX100 on batteries for five years! It's super convenient! You replace simple batteries with accumulators and here it is - happiness! You can buy in any store for a maximum of 200 rubles + charging any manufacturer from 500 rubles. A couple of batteries for any event are enough for both photos and videos! Try to find a battery and charger for your DSLR! I spent three months looking for a charger on the Canon1100. Not every city has good photo shops some supermarkets

    • Mykhaylo

This model - Canon Rebel T3 - is my first DSLR. Before that there were "soap dishes".
So here is my impression - the Kenon 1100 has the biggest disadvantage is the small number of megapixels. For this level, 12 megapixels is just not enough ...
Besides, 720 format is not a fountain ... My Nikon s6300 soap dish has a full HD - 1080. The difference is visually visible.

1100d - the model is already outdated. If you really buy a new DSLR - then with a large number of pixels and full HD video.

But a number of canon's upholstery is impressive! You can choose for every taste and price. I'm not a pro - but the impression is that due to the choice of lenses, it's worth buying a Canon DSLR.

      • Bender

You are not a pro and therefore speak complete nonsense. Read about the optimal matrix / megapixel aspect ratio.

      • anonym

Well, buy a Canon EF-S 17-55 f / 2.8 IS USM, its picture quality is at the level of the L series. The money is not small, of course, but worth it. And the device is wonderful, the only thing missing is a radio module for remote ignition of flashes.

  • Jury

Please tell me, does the Helios-44m 58mm F2.0 lens fit on the Canon 1100D?

  • Jury

Sorry for the previous question! I found the answer in previous comments.

  • Nicholas

Good day! Happy New Year to you, fellow photographers!)
The survey is as follows: there is a desire to purchase soy the first SLR camera. I have a choice between 1100 and 600 d / since the funds are within $ 800, I have 2 options: 1) buy 1100 with a standard lens 18-55 with a stub and immediately buy for it, for example, 50 / 1.8 or another lens suitable for portraiture is mostly outdoors (by the way, you can do something else for portraiture)
    2) buy 600 d and while stuffing your hand on the same standard lens ??

    • anonym

If it’s not scary, then you can buy a Canon EOS 1100D and the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f 3.5-5.6 IS STM (this is a kit from the new line of cameras: higher resolution, improved design and an ultrasonic focus motor for ridiculous money), plus Canon EF 40mm f 2.8 STM for portraits to the waist.

  • Jury

I understand this site is mainly for advanced. However, I want to ask. Which lens and flash do you recommend for beginners?

    • Lynx

      This is a beginner site.
But enough advanced and lazy to overcome several articles on this site and not ask idiotic questions.

      • Alexander

I agree one hundred percent, but it’s like no one should embarrass and excite such opinions, the scary thing in this story is that there are a myriad of such felt boots, what are we going to? just thinking about it makes me sick. Sometimes such questions are soaked so that it’s expensive to honor them.

        • Jury

          Honor, honor!

  • Sandy

I have been using this camera for about six months, so I have already had some impression of it. Initially, there were thoughts that the camera was supposedly the simplest and cheapest and you would not have to expect anything special from it, but xxxD and xxD are, of course, a completely different matter. But then it came to understand that there is no fundamental difference in these cameras, and you can get photos of excellent quality on any of them. It’s better to buy a simpler camera and a more expensive lens than take a higher-class carcass on the last and shoot on a whale. Because a regular whale does not reveal the full potential of even this very simple SLR. I also don’t see much point in replacing the 1100D (for the amateur, not the one who earns it) with a crop of a higher class. Better later, but go to the full frame.

  • Oleg

Long chose between this camera and Nikon3100d, Kenon defeated due to the preservation of infinity on the lenses for the M42 thread, which were inherited by Helios44-2, Industrialar 50-2 bought Jupiter37A and Mir1B. For filming for the soul is enough with the head. I think he gives a picture no worse than his older brothers like Kenon650d type. If you need to save money, it's better to buy a lens on them. I use the budget Kenon 55-250. Of the minuses, the automatic modes and shutter priority and aperture priority modes are often mistaken for the camera. I use only the manual mode here everything is in your hands, but for this you need to fill your hand. I really like to shoot Soviet optics from myself, I can add not only the camera and the photographer shoots, but also the LENS. Which is better Kenon or Nikon are absolutely equal firms. I would say photos with Nikon are more contrasting with Kenon are more airy who got hooked on

  • Anton

After using Nikon D90, and picking up Canon 1100D, I realized that the second picture is better ...

    • Alexander

Anton, as the owner of Canon 1100D and occasionally using Nikon D90, I can say that D90 is higher in almost all respects than Canon 1100D. Shadows, highlights, dynamic range, and high noise are better. The difference in management capabilities is also very large. And the picture ... it is necessary to be able to “prepare”. What's really annoying about the Canon 1100D is image banding with even small increases in sharpness and contrast. We are fighting, of course, but as a result, the picture is blurred.

  • Oleg

Who are interested in photos from this model can be seen here. http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/olegtaranenko2009-taranenko/ there are also photographs taken by some Soviet lenses with this camera plus canon 55-250

  • Amrita

Hello, Arkady. Thank you for the material about this camera, I really liked the work done by the camera. But I'm interested in what settings you need to set so that there is a blurred background, and a clear model?

    • Sandy

Amrita, there is a "Portrait" mode just for blurring the background. Or switch to aperture priority mode and set a small aperture value.

  • anonym

    Hello.
Arkady a question for you. Since 1985 I’ve been shooting Zenit-ET.
The last 7 years he abandoned an old friend, and after him there was nothing more.
Lately I’m racking my brains, what to take? Canon or Nikon, Nikon or Canon?
Tortured in short. I want to take a carcass not expensive, but glass at the price of a carcass, no less. I thought Canon 1100, but came across one review, where people. said that the pictures are a little better than the soap dish, and ergonomics are generally zero. Then the Canon 600, but I think the rotary display is generally an extra detail. And then suddenly Nikon 90 drew up, liked it right away, even purely visually, although I didn’t hold it in my hands, I thought it mine. But the announcement date is already 2008. But the technology does not stand still. In general, I am in a panic of confusion. My wife also swears, I can’t decide. That’s not how it is for me. but it is.

    • Alexander

Who said that the pictures are a little better than a soap dish - his hands are crooked. The camera is great. If you take a carcass + good used glass - that's it.

    • anonym

Take the canon, it has a shorter working distance. You can shoot with your old lenses without any problems. What no savings, having adapted, you can squeeze a good picture out of whale glass. You can even use it for reporting, (preferably in an external flash)

    • Paul

All lie. Excellent carcass. Very easy to use, simple and straightforward. By the way, the 600 is no better. I hang Soviet lenses on it - it works great. In general, lenses are easier to take on it than on Nikon. I have been working like this for two years now - for the “advanced amateur” level it is definitely suitable. No doubt about it.

  • MRVORONTSOV

    Good afternoon.
Thank you for the provided and useful material.
I would like to get sensible advice from knowledgeable people.
I have a canon 1100d, tell me, is it possible to purchase a 50mm 1/2 portrait lens on it? Will it fit this camera? If not, then what is needed for this.
I mainly need to shoot portraits and objects located at a distance of no more than a meter.
Thank you if someone gives an answer.

    • Vyacheslav

      I answered you below

    • Paul

In general, "fifty kopecks" is not quite a portrait, although it may do. A portrait lens with a focus of 85mm is better. But if you already have it, it will do.

  • Vyacheslav

I bought such a camera 1.5 years ago. Before that I shot with soap dishes, even earlier with Zeniths with interchangeable optics. I'm quite satisfied, I mastered it successfully, the old experience helped. And I bought it from my hands, I took a chance, but the device was fresh, three months before that I bought it in a store. - very suitable for a simple amateur, just what you need. I actively use m 42 optics, Zenit and not only. This camera "revived" my Zenit lenses, which were dead weight after Zenit filming stopped. Although the most convenient lenses are native Canon lenses, in Anyway, for shooting landscapes. Those amateurs who are richer can take a Canon 600,650 V for the poor, this is the most suitable device, a workhorse, so to speak. Here in this album of mine all the pictures were taken with this device
    http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/slava76-bww/

  • Vyacheslav

There are native Canon fifty dollars portrait painters, one of them is not very expensive, it costs about a hundred dollars, it will do. Soviet optics should be installed through the m42-eos adapter, I mean Zenit. Here on the site there is a detailed article on this subject, look in the site menu .
