Canon EOS 1100D review

This review presents the camera itself. Canon 1100D body. The prefix body means that this is a camera without a lens, and Canon 1100D kit - that the kit comes with a lens. Usually Canon 1100D comes with a kit lens - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II. On sale you can find cameras with lenses Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 without image stabilization. If you are choosing a camera with a lens, then I recommend choosing the IS II version.

Canon EOS 1100D is amateur cam, from which you can not require any serious indicators of quality and performance, but at the same time, the Canon EOS 1100D is great for amateur shooting. The camera was released in 2011.

The main features of the EOS 1100D, which are worth paying attention to:

The EOS 1100D is an amateur camera made mostly of plastic. It is lightweight, with the EOS 1100D weighing less than 500g. It is not difficult to take such a camera with you on vacation, various events, etc. Usually, professional cameras are quite heavy and do not have automatic modes, so I do not recommend expensive cameras for beginners. The EOS 1100D has a number of presets such as portrait, sports, macro, and more. If you are looking for a camera to replace a conventional digital camera (soap dish), then the EOS 1100D can be a worthy replacement. Of course, there is a lot to squeeze out of the EOS 1100D DSLR camera.

EOS 1100D has on board 12.2 megapixels, which is not much and not little, but just for the ordinary tasks of an amateur photographer. With 12.2 megapixels, you can easily print pictures up to and including A3. I generally do not recommend chasing megapixels. I still use my 6 megapixel camera Nikon D40 and I don’t feel any discomfort. More details in the section Battle of Megapixels.

EOS 1100D - Can shoot at 3 frames per second. True, there are many subtleties here. When using RAW quality images, the camera's rate of fire drops to 2 frames per second, which is very, very low. Only works slower Canon 1000D, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro and her younger models. The speed of the camera is greatly affected by the frame buffer capacity. The buffer is where the snapshot is placed before being written to the card. Canon EOS 1100D in JPEG format can buffer 9 frames, in RAW mode - only 5. Note: if you enable all additional functions, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at long exposures, the buffer will be able to hold 3 RAW files and only one JPEG file. After the buffer overflows, BUSY appears in the viewfinder or display, which is very annoying.

Canon 1100D can use ISO 100 to 6400, non-expandable. Auto ISO control available. True, you can select ISO only in whole steps: 100, 200, 400, 800, etc. The camera cannot boast of a silent picture at high ISO values. At low ISO, the image quality is quite good. Here Example shot at maximum ISO 6400 without processing.

The camera has a built-in flash, which is sometimes very useful. The camera’s display is large enough. 2.7 in, and 230.000 points.

Canon EOS 1100D sample photo

The Canon 1100D uses 9-point focus, the center point of the cross-shaped type. This is quite enough for many tasks. Auto focus is very dependent on the lens and shooting conditions. The Canon 1100D supports three focus modes.

Canon 1100D can shoot video in 720p, 1280 × 720 quality for up to 17 minutes, or until the video file is larger than 4GB. You can set the video recording rate to 29.97 or 25 fps. This quality is quite enough for viewing on a computer. Personally, I don't like it when the video weighs very, very much and takes up half of the hard drive. Please note that the camera does not support control of video settings such as aperture, excerpt, the video itself always uses the automatic settings suggested by the camera. When shooting video, autofocus is available when you press the shutter button halfway. Auto focus for the video wants the best.

Canon 1100D has a mode live view, this is the ability to take pictures like a regular digital camera. True, auto focus in this mode is very, very slow.

The Canon 1100D has a lot of different useful things, such as managing image quality, different image settings, an interesting feature of the priority of light tones.

Canon 1100D sample photo

Canon 1100D sample photo

The camera uses SD cards (SD, SDHC, SDXC), in fact, you can use a card of any size. A JPEG file L weighs about 7MB, a RAW (CR2) file weighs from 14 to 25MB. Such a huge weight surprised me.

Personal experience

You can control the Canon 1100D with one hand. All buttons are located to the right of the display. This is quite unusual, but does not cause any inconvenience. I liked the camera, simple, with an accessible interface. True, focusing on Live View is very slow. The camera normally measures exposure, even with manual lenses. You can always find fault with something, but it’s better to remember that important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

Conclusions:

Canon EOS 1100D Is a decent entry-level amateur camera. The camera is attracted by the possibility of shooting video.

Nastya, the naples are ready to control the mirror - to read the good instructions to her. do not regret it for 2-3 days. then see what you do not have to go.

  • Julia

Tell me, is he semi prof?

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, the review clearly states: Canon EOS 1100D is an amateur camera

      • Misha

the headmistress (or rather the owner of the company) bought a third mark from my wife with a whale elka, so a young lady takes pictures in auto mode. Is this an amateur or professional camera? :-) And bought as: "Give me the best one."

    • Igor

And if money is earned by a soap box, is she prof? :)

      • anonym

        Anyway prof

  • Ruslan

Hello everyone. Arkady, tell me how to choose a lens (not a whale) for this camera. There are so many of them that they got confused at the root. Are interested in fixes - expanse, portraiture, body, from not expensive CANON

    • Danil

About the portrait lens, I can say for sure ... fifty dollars, high-aperture :) and the telephoto camera is well 300 or 500, maybe 1000 :) You initially need to decide for yourself :)

    • yuriy75

take 70-300 and see if you have enough or need more.

  • Danil

Hello Arkady. Do you think you can fit a K-mount lens into the 1100D? :) I, of course, that the answer is hidden in my question, but still :) the diameter is the same, the flange is also, one petal is just a little bit different :)

    • Danil

In this case, the Zenitar-K 2/50 MC seems to be, in general, it is from the zenith 122K :)

  • Alexander

Hello. Tell me, how on a Canon EOS 1100 D camera, to capture a clear image throughout the frame, without blurring the background? In what mode do I need to shoot, how to configure?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. Set the widest possible angle on the lens
      2. Find the AV mode
      3. Set the maximum number F
      4. Take off.

    • yuriy75

set the "landscape" mode, the camera will set the sharpest settings by itself, and you will see which ones on the screen.

  • Alexander

Good day! Tell me which budget lens to choose for 1100D. The goal is to get meters from 70-100 normal (for a beginner) quality. The native kiovo is rather weak. Considering 55-250?

    • Eugene

I have one, I’m not overjoyed.

  • Anton

Tell me, is there a focus point highlight on this photo?

    • Lech

      Yes

  • yuriy75

Dear readers, I’ve been using this camera for half a year, I’m very pleased! I have 4 lenses kit 18-55, 50mm 1.8, sigma 70-300mm. I’m quite satisfied with all the lenses and the device, sometimes the aperture of budget lenses is not enough, but in general everything is fine. As Arkady said the whole thing is how to shoot, nothing. When I looked at the diagrams and graphs of the lenses, it became easier to decide on what aperture values to shoot to get an acceptable picture (maximum sharpness or slightly blur the picture to hide the skin defects of the model. So I wish you every success.

  • Konstantin

    Hello everyone!
I bought yesterday 1100d, my first DSLR.
I wanted to ask if anyone is interested in interval shooting (time lapse), of course there is no such function in 1100d, but I read what is in the alternative firmware. I haven’t tried the firmware yet, or maybe someone else knows about the remote control with an intervalometer, because there is an input for the remote control, who knows what about the firmware for 1100d and the remote control model, write, thanks in advance

    • yuriy75

as a locksmith, I advise you not to go into the tuned mechanism, buy a remote control. Change the firmware - you will lose the warranty, and the remote control will work with other cameras.

That's what I don’t advise taking, is this camera) In the photo she has a metal mount. in fact, this is not so, it is plastic) Yes, and Arkady, it would be better if you looked at this camera with a whale, and showed the whole horror of the situation

Wouldn't you talk about nonsense about the bayonet. And about the whale…. this is a standard lens, what miracles do you expect from it ??? There are other, more worthy glass to replace it. I'm happy with this camera. The arsenal includes both Canon autofocus lenses and manual glasses of the Takumar type. And from myself I will say that it makes no sense to compare, for example, Nikon and Kenon. Each has its own advantages. But he noted one, who started with Nikon, he goes through life with Nikon. The situation is the same with Kenon.

  • Alexey

I am the owner of this camera. Still, the camera has a metal mount. The camera lay in the hand somehow better than the competitor from Nikon-D3100. IMHO for quick access to the most used functions is better than Nikon D3100 (I could be wrong). The quality of the picture, I think, will be comparable to the competitor from Nikon in the same conditions (the beauty of the picture rests on the skill of the photographer and post-processing of photos).

  • Sergei

I have been using Canon 1100D for more than 2 years. 4 pieces of lenses: Helios 44-4m, Canon 50, 18-55, 55-250. It was used for reporting shooting (for example, in dolphinariums, at parties, weddings). In a photo studio for photos on documents. For subject photography. Macro photography and just at home. Filming animals. The camera showed itself only on the positive side. If you use the necessary filters, then no one will say that this is an entry-level DSLR. He also shot posters for billboards, and other huge sizes (I have such a job). Normal unit. Nikons in my professional work are not considered a class at all. This is due only to the fact that one often has to buy one or another lens, or finish the Soviet ones. Nikons in this part are not suitable in principle. I need to work, and not to dude with inscriptions on the devices. Moreover, 1100 from 600 is almost indistinguishable, and in extreme situations, you can donate a carcass. This is the truth of life. P.S. I have nothing against Nikonov, but I repeat that this is not a rational acquisition for work.

  • Sergei

And one more thing. Canon 1100 may be the first DSLR for many, but I assure you it will not be the last. For different situations, oddly enough, different cameras, different flashes are needed (and not necessarily expensive, it is enough for 90 hryvnias and 25 hryvnias. An old "photon" with a light synchronizer will do). As they said more than once, you need to adapt to the technique that you shoot. You yourself understand that you can't get under the water with a DSLR without a special waterbox, but with a soap box without an external lens like Nikon COOLPIX AW100, you can put it in a regular plastic bag for greater reliability. Well, if you want to shoot an extreme video, then you can't do without a DVR. So if the thought comes to you that apart from Canon 1100 you would like something else, then know: this is normal and correct. Good luck everyone.

  • Elena

Tell me how to shoot in the dark?

  • Galina

But how much does such a camera cost?

  • Alexander

Elena: flash or slow shutter speed
Galina: about 3500 UAH with a whale lens 18-55 is ii

  • Petrenko

Of all the listed here, which is not any better!, Only the new Canon 100d

  • Eugene

Who will tell you to take the Canon EOS 1100D Kit or Canon EOS 500D Kit?)

    • Alexander

All else being equal, the 500D is preferable

  • Marina

Arkady, tell me please, on canon 1100d, you can adjust the aperture as is acceptable on nikon d5100?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Similar.

      • Tatyana

You can find out what to take Canon 1100d 2 or 3.Thank you

  • Vitalik

I ask you to clarify, when choosing, I ran into a problem, namely there is stabilization of IS and IS II. What is the difference?

    • Artyom

I ask you to clarify, when choosing, I ran into a problem, namely there is stabilization of IS and IS II. What is the difference?
This is not a stabilization mode but a generation of lenses.
The difference in lens generation (IS II is an improved first version of IS - without numbers means the first version of the lens), IS II is the second version of the lens, with better sharpness parameters, etc.
I advise you to take only the second version, between them there is a big difference in quality, which is visible by eye!

  • alexey

I advise everyone to Nikon d4 body thing is just super, it’s worth it to turn when you photograph it, you can even see the pilink.

  • Vitalik

I am tormented in choosing a DSLR, I immediately wanted Kenon 1100, puzav it in my hands did not like the body shape and size (large) and the model is old. I switched to Nikon 3100, it will be more compact in the hand, it’s pleasant, but not the most important thing, at the beginning to read reviews they write that the faces are orange, the colors are cool (Nikon chip) I switched to Sony and 37 in my hand, bright focus, the picture is super (realistic) in general I liked everything BUT! there is some kind of motionless mirror that dims the light passing on the matrix 30% innovation! And what about optics? TELL what to choose. pliz!

  • Ksenia

tell me, please, is it worth buying a canon 1100d? what is it good ?? and does anyone have a photo from this camera? if there is, please throw it!

    • Alexander

There are no friends to the taste and camera. I personally have two of them, the first 30D then bought the 1100D, I have been using it for almost two years and am happy with everything. 30D is also good in its own way, if it takes a long time to compare, and Arkady posted the photo above, see and decide for yourself. Ergonomics 1100D in my opinion is more under the graceful female handle, the camera body and the weight is not very great.
In general, the camera is even a little more than worth the money, the image quality is not bad at all.

  • Andrei

Hello Arkady, I use a Nikon d3000 I want to buy a Canon camera and for the ability to shoot video, and use lenses with a M 42 thread without altering the working distance, so that infinity would be preserved, but I don’t know what to choose, I tend to Canon 1100d because the budget is limited, I want to ask Is there a big difference between the 1100d 550d 600d does it make sense to overpay for small differences that do not affect much as an amateur, thanks in advance

  • Kate

Why is it taking pictures for the third time in the dark?

    • Lynx

Apparently he is afraid of the dark, he is mentally preparing himself, and therefore he takes pictures of one-two-three.
