Canon EOS 1100D review

This review presents the camera itself. Canon 1100D body. The prefix body means that this is a camera without a lens, and Canon 1100D kit - that the kit comes with a lens. Usually Canon 1100D comes with a kit lens - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II. On sale you can find cameras with lenses Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS and Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 without image stabilization. If you are choosing a camera with a lens, then I recommend choosing the IS II version.

Canon EOS 1100D is amateur cam, from which you can not require any serious indicators of quality and performance, but at the same time, the Canon EOS 1100D is great for amateur shooting. The camera was released in 2011.

The main features of the EOS 1100D, which are worth paying attention to:

The EOS 1100D is an amateur camera made mostly of plastic. It is lightweight, with the EOS 1100D weighing less than 500g. It is not difficult to take such a camera with you on vacation, various events, etc. Usually, professional cameras are quite heavy and do not have automatic modes, so I do not recommend expensive cameras for beginners. The EOS 1100D has a number of presets such as portrait, sports, macro, and more. If you are looking for a camera to replace a conventional digital camera (soap dish), then the EOS 1100D can be a worthy replacement. Of course, there is a lot to squeeze out of the EOS 1100D DSLR camera.

EOS 1100D has on board 12.2 megapixels, which is not much and not little, but just for the ordinary tasks of an amateur photographer. With 12.2 megapixels, you can easily print pictures up to and including A3. I generally do not recommend chasing megapixels. I still use my 6 megapixel camera Nikon D40 and I don’t feel any discomfort. More details in the section Battle of Megapixels.

EOS 1100D - Can shoot at 3 frames per second. True, there are many subtleties here. When using RAW quality images, the camera's rate of fire drops to 2 frames per second, which is very, very low. Only works slower Canon 1000D, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro and her younger models. The speed of the camera is greatly affected by the frame buffer capacity. The buffer is where the snapshot is placed before being written to the card. Canon EOS 1100D in JPEG format can buffer 9 frames, in RAW mode - only 5. Note: if you enable all additional functions, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at long exposures, the buffer will be able to hold 3 RAW files and only one JPEG file. After the buffer overflows, BUSY appears in the viewfinder or display, which is very annoying.

Canon 1100D can use ISO 100 to 6400, non-expandable. Auto ISO control available. True, you can select ISO only in whole steps: 100, 200, 400, 800, etc. The camera cannot boast of a silent picture at high ISO values. At low ISO, the image quality is quite good. Here Example shot at maximum ISO 6400 without processing.

The camera has a built-in flash, which is sometimes very useful. The camera’s display is large enough. 2.7 in, and 230.000 points.

The Canon 1100D uses 9-point focus, the center point of the cross-shaped type. This is quite enough for many tasks. Auto focus is very dependent on the lens and shooting conditions. The Canon 1100D supports three focus modes.

Canon 1100D can shoot video in 720p, 1280 × 720 quality for up to 17 minutes, or until the video file is larger than 4GB. You can set the video recording rate to 29.97 or 25 fps. This quality is quite enough for viewing on a computer. Personally, I don't like it when the video weighs very, very much and takes up half of the hard drive. Please note that the camera does not support control of video settings such as aperture, excerpt, the video itself always uses the automatic settings suggested by the camera. When shooting video, autofocus is available when you press the shutter button halfway. Auto focus for the video wants the best.

Canon 1100D has a mode live view, this is the ability to take pictures like a regular digital camera. True, auto focus in this mode is very, very slow.

The Canon 1100D has a lot of different useful things, such as managing image quality, different image settings, an interesting feature of the priority of light tones.

The camera uses SD cards (SD, SDHC, SDXC), in fact, you can use a card of any size. A JPEG file L weighs about 7MB, a RAW (CR2) file weighs from 14 to 25MB. Such a huge weight surprised me.

Personal experience

You can control the Canon 1100D with one hand. All buttons are located to the right of the display. This is quite unusual, but does not cause any inconvenience. I liked the camera, simple, with an accessible interface. True, focusing on Live View is very slow. The camera normally measures exposure, even with manual lenses. You can always find fault with something, but it’s better to remember that important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

Conclusions:

Canon EOS 1100D Is a decent entry-level amateur camera. The camera is attracted by the possibility of shooting video.

Please tell me, CANON EOS 1100 without a lens is 10500 rubles - is it not expensive?
And another question: Is this camera suitable for subject shooting in a normal room and with side lighting from a window (you need to shoot objects - boxes measuring 15 cm by 15 cm). there is a tripod and a CANON EF 50 / 1.8 lens is planned
    THANKS.

    • Edward

It's expensive - you can find a whale for this money
      Or a better carcass

It is well suited for subject photography.
But I do not think that 50mm on the crop will be convenient for shooting objects
I think - for subject shooting - the light and macro capabilities are more important
A bright lens can give a shallow depth of field - and still have to shoot at closed apertures

For starters, you can try to buy a whale from 18-55. It's not bad in terms of macro, and it is better to invest in light - ring flash + regular flash

But it all depends on what you need.

What is better to choose? Canon 1100D or Nikon D 3100 ??

    • Denis

      Nikon D5100

  • Lillian

Good afternoon. I want to buy this camera, but I hesitate between the Canon EOS 1100d and just 1100d. Which advise? thanks.

    • Denis

      and how do they differ?

    • anonym

      this is the same model

    • Sergei

Don’t buy anything !!! Exploded at the feet! I warn you !!!

      • Onotole

In the legs? Did they play football for them?

  • Goshan

Normal Fotik for his level began with him

  • Edward

    Pleases:
    Easy
    Compact
Due to low resolution - ISO 3200 norms
We do not kill - once fell on stones by a waterfall, all the rules
Busy mode does not block control and viewing of pictures - like on sony

    Irritating -
    S mode called tv
    Bad display
No rubber grip for the hand
Lots of useless drum modes - it's easy to confuse the right one
    Few buttons
    Only one control wheel
    720p video
There is no gyroscope in the eyepiece
    No bw display on top

It’s not bad for everything except reporting
    Good for taking subjects.
Well suited as an extra camera
Or as a camera to try m42 optics if you have Nikon

    • Edward

      * useless

    • Andrey T.

TV is Time Value. And why should it be called S (Shutter-Priority Auto)?

      • Edward

This name is accepted on most other systems.
It’s the same as kilometers and miles

Well, tv, as a rule, causes other associations

        Clearly, this is a trifle

        • Andrey T.

It is not clear why this little thing is “annoying”. For a non-native speaker, TV \ AV is more intuitive than referring to Shutter through the abbreviation S. The ratio of firms by markings is seven to three: Shutter priority is often abbreviated as S (with Nikon, Minolta, Konica Minolta, Sony, Olympus, Sigma, Panasonic) or Tv (for “time value” with Canon, Pentax, Leica)

  • Linnea

Help me please! My Canon 1100D camera suddenly stopped shooting RAW files. I used it carefully and a little, the phot never fell, was not in the water. Instead of RAW files, the card now produces just empty files without an extension.

When you try to open such a file on the computer, a menu appears with a choice of programs, which one to open, select the program and then the computer offers to give the file the extension. The answer is OK, the extension is JPEG, then this photo is visible as a JPEG, although it should have been shot in RAW.

The card for recording files was changed by 3 different ones - the same for all. That is, it does not depend on the card. I also changed shooting modes and other camera settings and combined them in different ways. Nothing helps. What could be the reason for this failure?

    • Oleg

On the card, the file must have the cr2 extension, if it is, then it is. Maybe your computer program does not see raw. If on the fotik you can view the image and it has a raw format, then everything is fine with the camera, perhaps the reason is in the computer. Install native dpp try to open it in it

      • Linnea

        Oleg, thank you very much!

But I have several cameras, including Canon EOS 800D, Canon EOS 200D, Canon EOS M. Their RAW files open without problems. And from the Nikon D7000 camera too. And from this camera, which I am writing about, the EOS 1100D, a couple of months ago, it also opened normally. Then I didn't use it for a couple of months. And suddenly she just stopped shooting RAW.

The fact that the problem is not in the programs on the computer can be seen even on the camera itself - by the size of the captured files. RAWs take up more space, and the camera shows that little space is taken up because only JPEGs are captured. That is, it was the camera that stopped shooting RAW. I was looking for information on the Internet, nowhere about this. On my computer, I open RAW files with a licensed, subscribed Lightroom program. It opens RAW files from any of my cameras.

        • Victor

You cannot find the problem because it is unique :) There are troubles with a camera, perhaps a flashing will help, but not a fact.

You can try the magicallantern by the way.

          Ps your landscape is good)))

          • Linnea

Victor, thank you very much! So, after all, the problem is in the camera ... Indeed, the problem is somehow unique. I am always very good with cameras. She was lying in a box for herself, resting. Before that, I was always good at shooting RAW files. And in general she worked very well, so pleasant. And suddenly she broke down ... (: I loved her very much, and I feel hurt.

By the way, she stopped writing RAW as soon as I put another lens on her - Canon 50mm 1.8 II. Maybe she didn't like the lens? I should try shooting with the new Canon 18-55mm 5-5-6 IS STM. Maybe it will be good again.

It's a pity that I don't know how to flash and install the magicallantern ... Is it very difficult? Where can I get them? I have never done this.

I am very pleased that you liked my landscape! Thank you very much! How did you find him so quickly? ...

        • Alexey

          do exactly the steps.
          1. turn on the camera, reset the camera settings, see the manual how.
          2. turn off the camera, remove the battery, memory card, remove the lens.
          3. install a memory card, battery, turn on the camera, mode M. ISO 100, 1 \ 100, BB - auto, time-lapse shooting. specify shooting in RAW and JPEG in the settings.
          4. make a couple of frames.
          5. turn off the camera, pull out the memory card, drop the captured files with the card reader on the computer and attach them to the message.

  • Linnea

Victor and Alexey, thank you very much!

Finally I found the reason, and now everything is in order - the camera is not to blame. That, it turns out, was the problem. A couple of months ago I bought a Canon EOS 800D camera and installed the programs that came with this camera on the Canon website on my computer. Including this one - EOS Utility. So she ate (took over) my RAW files.

When I plugged the cable from the camera down to the computer, this program immediately opened, and I quietly closed it. And in the folder with the card, the fotika saw these naked files without permission - instead of RAW files. JPEGs were fine as usual. Now, of course, you have to transfer files using this EOS Utility. But the main thing is that the camera works as before. ))

    • Alexey

what is this all for? a conventional card reader is faster and more reliable. and all native software is completely useless. well, maybe DPP can be tried, although there are more normal software for processing RAW files.

  • Alexey

Good day! Tell me, what external flash to choose for this model?
