Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM Is a stunning lens, inexpensive, and produces amazing images. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a short telephoto, classic portrait, fast prime lens suitable for all Canon EOS digital SLR cameras. This is a lens from a full-frame camera, as indicated by the designation EF in the name of the lens. The optical scheme of the lens includes 9 elements in 7 groups and not a single specific element.

On Canon APS-C cameras k=1.6x EGF will match 136mm, and on Canon APS-H k=1.3 EGF will 110.5mm. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM remains a wonderful portrait lens both in crop and full frame, you can safely buy it without worrying about switching from crop to full frame.

Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM has a built-in ultrasonic focusing motor - UltraSabout nothing Motor. Focus is very fast.... The lens focuses very quickly from infinity to MDF and back. Focusing accuracy is highly dependent on the camera and shooting conditions. When working with the lens, I found no focusing flaws with the Canon EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM. The lens has fully internal focusing - when you rotate the focusing ring, neither the front nor the rear lens moves. The diameter of the front filter is 58mm.

The lens has a focus mode switch AF / MF. In manual focus mode, the focus ring in the active position rotates only 90 degrees. When reaching the limit position, the focus ring just starts to slide. The minimum focusing distance is 85 смwhich is quite normal. The lens has a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale, but only for F / 22. There is also a red dot for adjusting focus when shooting in the infrared spectrum. The focus ring rotates smoothly, the focus ring itself is rubberized and conveniently located on the lens.

The lens aperture changes from F / 1.8 to F / 22. Aperture F / 1.8 is considered quite sufficient for poor lighting conditions, but due to the large focal length and the lack of a stabilizer in the lens, it is very desirable when taking pictures with your hands excerpt was not higher than 1 \ 80s. More details in the section on how take pictures with hand. Difference between aperture The f / 1.8 and f / 1.2 of the more expensive Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2L II USM are as much as 2.25x, which is already quite noticeable for a number of tasks.

The number of diaphragm blades is 8 pieces, this allows you to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area and create a pleasant bokeh. The bokeh deserves special attention, as it is very pleasant and smooth.

On the lens you can find the inscription Canon Lens Made in Japan, Canon Lens EF 85mm 1: 1.8 UltraSabout nothing, which adds confidence in the good build quality.

Image quality using Canon EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM

I can judge the image quality when using the lens only on cropped cameras Canon 400D, Canon 1100D. When working on a crop, the lens shows the complete absence of such a drawback as distortion and vignetting. The lens is sharp enough, even at f / 1.8. When closing the diaphragm, sharpness increases until it abuts against the diffraction threshold. The color rendition is neutral, the lens gives out a contrast image, normally transfers back and side light. The only weaknesses of the lens are chromatic aberration on an open aperture, especially freezing. Friging - violet halos on highly contrasting edges of elements in the frame, for example, near solar reflections in water. In general, the image quality is excellent.

Competitors

Canon has a very interesting approach, among the classic 85mm portrait cameras for 2012 there are only three - these are Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2 L USM, Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2L II USM and Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. The first two are very similar and cost about 5x more than the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. It turns out that you need to choose either a very expensive portrait lens, or a fairly cheap Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. Sigma AF 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is an alternative. Nikon's situation is more interesting, there are as many as four different lenses, which differ in their price and functionality, and there are plenty to choose from.

In any case, the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is an amazing lens, it has an excellent aperture, constructive, and price. If the budget is limited, then the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a real panacea. Many photographers are faced with choosing a portrait lens for a crop, often their attention is attracted by the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 USM, and Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II Are good options that are more crop friendly. But the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is much stronger blur the foreground and foreground for portage shooting, with it the distance to the person being portrayed increases, compared with fifty dollars, which reduces the discomfort of communicating with the person being photographed. I recommend choosing the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM.

Brief comparison with a similar lens from Nikon - Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor: both lenses Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor and the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM belong to the same class and price range. Nikkor has a slightly larger diameter front lens and looks prettier on the camera. Both lenses show very chic performance, but I want to note that I liked the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM a lot more than the Nikkor when using the crop, and the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM focuses more than twice as fast than Nikkor. Here is an example pair of handheld shots on these two lenses.

All sample photos were taken on camera. Canon 400D и Canon 1100D and lens Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM using protective filter Digi-Optic 58mm UV, without treatment... All photos were shot in RAW, converted to JPEG using Adobe Photoshop Lighroom autolevels, downsized to 3MP and imprinting data from EXIF.

Personal experience

The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a lens you don't want to take off your camera. It is light enough, compact, fast and very fast, and even full frame. I really like the high-aperture 85mm lenses, they can shoot a lot of creative ideas, they wonderfully blur the far and foreground, and on the crop they work like short telephoto lenses.

Conclusions

Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM - a great Fast long telephoto portrait lens. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM shows excellent image quality, especially the nature of the bokeh. I recommend.

Update: there was a review of an inexpensive alternative to this lens in the face YONGNUO 100 / 2.

  • Igor

Good afternoon Arkady. I am faced with the choice of these portrait painters Sigma 85 f 1.4 and Kenon 85 f 1.8. What do you think will be better? I can not make a choice, I have a canon 5d mark3 device. Help make a choice.

  • Sergei

A really wonderful lens, it is very easy to work with it, without effort, I got it more than half a year ago, I am very satisfied. Tell Arkady, but this lens is familiar to you: Canon EF 28mm f / 1.8 USM, I'm very interested in how this glass works, especially on crop ...

  • Alina

    Good lens

  • Ivan

“Compared to fifty dollars, which reduces the discomfort of communicating with the person being photographed” I think you wanted to say “increases the discomfort”))) Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, I wrote everything correctly, especially with shoulder portraits.

      • Vladimir

Of course that's right! Is it really not clear: either the photographer is "poking the lens in the nose" of the person being portrayed, or else he moves a decent distance, letting the model breathe deeply.
And the story about the lens is wonderful! It is useful to read to those who carry all kinds of snowstorm and pose as a connoisseur and master.

      • Yarkiya

I ask you to forgive me for being boring and showing off, but it is correct to say not “shoulder” portraits, but “shoulder portraits”.

  • Vladimir

    Arkady,
Read the wikipedia article http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Photo_System and never call a full frame APS. It is not correct.

  • Yana

Does it fit on a 600D?

    • Artyom

It is immediately clear that the manual was not read to the camera)))
Lenses with an EF and EF-S mount become 600D.

    • Mariska

Yes. I use it myself. Photos are very beautiful!

  • Oleg

The Canon EF 85mm 1.8 USM is a great portrait lens. I always use it on the 5d mark 2 when shooting people with natural lighting. This focal point is very convenient - and the background blurs and allows you to be at a convenient distance from the person. Aperture 1.8 is enough with the head. Chromatic aberrations, which everyone writes about, do have a place to be, but when shooting portraits, you need to really try very hard to see them. And for everything else, you can just cover the diaphragm. I definitely recommend it.

    • Anatoly

Yes, photos about nothing, I goof.

  • anonym

Well it's just horror that you filmed. And he also signed it all "amazing lens". After viewing such pictures, you will not want to buy.

  • Viktoriya

If you can pull on the canon eus 1100d, be a good photographer ?!

  • Oleg

It will be more beautiful than “kitty”. And what will be good - to lay down from your maysternoti

  • Serge

Hello, I have such a question, the Canon 500D + Canon EF 28mm F1.8 USM camera, which advise you to either Canon EF 85mm 1.8 USM or Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM in conjunction. It’s not possible to make a connection, as everything is through online stores . Advise, please !!!

  • Angelina

I would like to ask what about this lens for shooting stars of the milky way :)

  • anonym

Good evening. Fuck the bucket! Having bought a month to that Canon 70 D. With a cat of 18-135 yusm, I want to see a portrait of an Uzi at once, 85 1.8, as if I’m pretty, be kind of vibor! Will you please cheer up?

    • Maksim

      Be ok!

  • anonym

    85 1.8 canon

  • karina

hello, I’d like to ask, will this lens work well with the canon 600d?

  • jashur

I want to shoot my daughter’s performances at artistic gymnastics. currently shooting a nikon p7700 camera in equal format without flash. There is not enough sharpness and a very noisy picture is obtained. I want to take the carcass Zapop d700 and this fast lens. Does image quality improve? Usually I put the shutter speed at 1/250, the chart on the car, ISO 800.

  • anonym

I agree with one comment - the photos are unsuccessful for evaluating the quality of the lens.
I myself want to buy 85mm 1.8 for the 650D crop and I want to find examples of photos in order to understand what quality of the photo you can get from it.
But usually either a photo from a full frame (and hang on them at least, the clarity will still be good), or like these berries, leaves, nose, eyes, etc.
You take a person to full height i.e. from a long distance and in sharpness.
And here the maximum girl is waist-high. The clarity is such that the whale can be better removed.

    • Maksim

Full internet of photos from it. The same pixel-piper.com take a look. There is a filter down to a specific camera model in conjunction with a specific lens.

  • Katya

Good day. Tell me if the lens is noisy when autofocus?

  • Oleg

    The noise is almost imperceptible

  • Pastor

The lens is good for everyone, but it is aching. On crop it is very convenient for them to shoot, count 135-ka. And on ff wider and you can even shoot in a small room. But HA is just furious, I probably haven’t seen such anywhere. Thank God, for those who, like me, horrified by the XA on this glass, in the lightroom there is an opportunity to automatically load the glass profile and fix ha. True, at 1.8 ha they are not always corrected automatically and you also have to manually finish them. It would be a perfect portrait glass, if not for these nasty HA :)

  • Oleg

HA on covered holes are not significant. On FF carcasses in open very few situations in which 1.8-3.5 are justified. Very small DOF, but at 4 and above, super photos are obtained :)
I use 20 mm and 85 mm with my modest experience. Indoors 20 mm and 50 mm. For the street on FF 85, it’s quite a regular glass IMHO

  • Oleg

Very interesting situation. This lens was used with Canon 5D m ll, not impressed. The picture is too hard. For that, it was amazingly revealed on the Sony a7.

    • Stas

Well, how do you understand this, both FF? examples in the studio!

    • Alexey

the lens does not open nor does it close :)))) unlike the diaphragm in it)))
if the lens has a strong micro-contrast (like a Zeiss maker, for example), then it will draw a “hard” picture on any matrix :)))
Kenon 85mm 1.8 is an excellent portrait lens, there are thousands of photos on the photo on 5DM2, no one has ever received a “hard” picture :)))))))

  • Alexey

excellent lens, one of the best at kenon. affordable.
she has a twin brother - the magnificent Canon 100 2.0 USM.
even better in the picture and there are no problems with HA but more expensive.

  • Mila

Good afternoon! I bought a canon eos750d (W) a whale doesn’t like an 18-55mm lens, tell me please if an 85mmf / 1.8usm lens is suitable for it, for portrait shooting with a well-blurred back flap !! Thank!!

    • Maugli

      Yes

    • Alexey

      fit, but you will have a lens angle of 85 * 1.6 = 136mm

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

"The only weakness of the lens is chromatic aberraction at open aperture."

In the word of aberration, the letter "k" is superfluous.
