Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM Is a stunning lens, inexpensive, and produces amazing images. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a short telephoto, classic portrait, fast prime lens suitable for all Canon EOS digital SLR cameras. This is a lens from a full-frame camera, as indicated by the designation EF in the name of the lens. The optical scheme of the lens includes 9 elements in 7 groups and not a single specific element.

On Canon APS-C cameras k=1.6x EGF will match 136mm, and on Canon APS-H k=1.3 EGF will 110.5mm. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM remains a wonderful portrait lens both in crop and full frame, you can safely buy it without worrying about switching from crop to full frame.

Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM has a built-in ultrasonic focusing motor - UltraSabout nothing Motor. Focus is very fast.... The lens focuses very quickly from infinity to MDF and back. Focusing accuracy is highly dependent on the camera and shooting conditions. When working with the lens, I found no focusing flaws with the Canon EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM. The lens has fully internal focusing - when you rotate the focusing ring, neither the front nor the rear lens moves. The diameter of the front filter is 58mm.

The lens has a focus mode switch AF / MF. In manual focus mode, the focus ring in the active position rotates only 90 degrees. When reaching the limit position, the focus ring just starts to slide. The minimum focusing distance is 85 смwhich is quite normal. The lens has a focus distance scale in meters and feet, as well as a depth of field scale, but only for F / 22. There is also a red dot for adjusting focus when shooting in the infrared spectrum. The focus ring rotates smoothly, the focus ring itself is rubberized and conveniently located on the lens.

The lens aperture changes from F / 1.8 to F / 22. Aperture F / 1.8 is considered quite sufficient for poor lighting conditions, but due to the large focal length and the lack of a stabilizer in the lens, it is very desirable when taking pictures with your hands excerpt was not higher than 1 \ 80s. More details in the section on how take pictures with hand. Difference between aperture The f / 1.8 and f / 1.2 of the more expensive Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2L II USM are as much as 2.25x, which is already quite noticeable for a number of tasks.

The number of diaphragm blades is 8 pieces, this allows you to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area and create a pleasant bokeh. The bokeh deserves special attention, as it is very pleasant and smooth.

On the lens you can find the inscription Canon Lens Made in Japan, Canon Lens EF 85mm 1: 1.8 UltraSabout nothing, which adds confidence in the good build quality.

Image quality using Canon EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM

I can judge the image quality when using the lens only on cropped cameras Canon 400D, Canon 1100D. When working on a crop, the lens shows the complete absence of such a drawback as distortion and vignetting. The lens is sharp enough, even at f / 1.8. When closing the diaphragm, sharpness increases until it abuts against the diffraction threshold. The color rendition is neutral, the lens gives out a contrast image, normally transfers back and side light. The only weaknesses of the lens are chromatic aberration on an open aperture, especially freezing. Friging - violet halos on highly contrasting edges of elements in the frame, for example, near solar reflections in water. In general, the image quality is excellent.

Competitors

Canon has a very interesting approach, among the classic 85mm portrait cameras for 2012 there are only three - these are Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2 L USM, Canon EF 85mm f / 1.2L II USM and Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. The first two are very similar and cost about 5x more than the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. It turns out that you need to choose either a very expensive portrait lens, or a fairly cheap Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM. Sigma AF 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is an alternative. Nikon's situation is more interesting, there are as many as four different lenses, which differ in their price and functionality, and there are plenty to choose from.

In any case, the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is an amazing lens, it has an excellent aperture, constructive, and price. If the budget is limited, then the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a real panacea. Many photographers are faced with choosing a portrait lens for a crop, often their attention is attracted by the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 USM, and Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II Are good options that are more crop friendly. But the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is much stronger blur the foreground and foreground for portage shooting, with it the distance to the person being portrayed increases, compared with fifty dollars, which reduces the discomfort of communicating with the person being photographed. I recommend choosing the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM.

Brief comparison with a similar lens from Nikon - Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor: both lenses Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor and the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM belong to the same class and price range. Nikkor has a slightly larger diameter front lens and looks prettier on the camera. Both lenses show very chic performance, but I want to note that I liked the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM a lot more than the Nikkor when using the crop, and the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM focuses more than twice as fast than Nikkor. Here is an example pair of handheld shots on these two lenses.

Sample photos on Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM

All sample photos were taken on camera. Canon 400D и Canon 1100D and lens Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM using protective filter Digi-Optic 58mm UV, without treatment... All photos were shot in RAW, converted to JPEG using Adobe Photoshop Lighroom autolevels, downsized to 3MP and imprinting data from EXIF.

Personal experience

The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM is a lens you don't want to take off your camera. It is light enough, compact, fast and very fast, and even full frame. I really like the high-aperture 85mm lenses, they can shoot a lot of creative ideas, they wonderfully blur the far and foreground, and on the crop they work like short telephoto lenses.

Conclusions

Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM - a great Fast long telephoto portrait lens. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM shows excellent image quality, especially the nature of the bokeh. I recommend.

Update: there was a review of an inexpensive alternative to this lens in the face YONGNUO 100 / 2.

I am amazed at the new start of writing articles (: Іmore "This is a lens from a full-frame camera, about (so and ask now) is indicated by the designation EF in the name of the lens"

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Yes, Vyshgorod.

  • Alexey

Arkady, thanks for another great review! interesting lens. judging by the examples, it actually produces a more plastic and warm picture than the Nikon 85 1.8d. I would like to see reviews of the rest of the line of 85 kenons.

    • V

Because of this lens, I switched to Canon :) really amazing glass for both portraits and for walking, macro, etc. The best portrait for crop. I saw tips on the internet to cover a hole at least up to f / 2 for the best colors and a small solution to the problem with chromatic aberrations. In fact, I encounter them quite rarely.

    • Kirill

The comparison is not correct, it is necessary to compare the nikon 85mm 1.8G so the canon lens did not even stand nearby in terms of photo quality and sharpness in the open
Nikkor 85 1.8g lens on the open aperture gives such a sharp picture as canon only on f4 can give

  • Alexey

I heard from many people who know that there is almost no difference between 1,2 and 1,8 in picture quality. About 1,2 I heard that slow autofocus. It seemed to me that the sharpness is not enough for open. But the glass is very good, no doubt. Thanks for the review. :-)

    • Edgar

I totally agree with you. I tried 85 1.2 of the second version on my 40d. The focus is really very slow, it seemed to me that it would be slower than the lousy ef-s 17-85 is usm. I can’t say anything special in quality, but it seemed to me that 135 f2.0,35 f1.4 or f70-200 2.8L (without a stub) would be more interesting.

  • Eugene

Thanks for the objective review. With all the advantages of the lens, it simply has nightmarish chromatic aberrations on open apertures. The shooting of objects of white and metallic color is contraindicated unambiguously.

  • Ivan

I liked the bokeh of the lens, smooth, plastic. Something like Vega 28.

  • Artem

    Interesting comparison with the new nikkor 85 1 / 1.8 af-s

Hello. What do you think, if you install the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM on the Canon EOS 650D, how good is the bundle?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It’s good to get it.

        get it!

  • Veronica

Hello Alexey, Thank you very much for the review! Tell me, please, I have a Kenon 550 and a Kenon 50 lens 1.4. Now I’m looking at the second lens, because it’s a bit tight. Is it worth taking this 2 85? Is the difference noticeable between these lenses? thanks for the answer!

    • anonym

If you are a bit dark with a fifty-fifty, then it will be even more closely with this ...

  • Erast

Thank you, Arkady, for the review! I want to know if you have ever had to compare the quality of pictures taken with Canon 85 / 1,8 and Samyang 85 / 1,4 lenses. I read a lot of praise for Samyang 85 / 1,4. Their cost is approximately the same. For me, the presence or absence of automation is not a decisive factor, but I am faced with a choice, and then someone's advice would help me, because I myself cannot test these lenses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Samyang did not use, but met a lot of good reviews.

    • Oleg

Somehow I fell into the hands of Samyang 85 / 1,4. I left a very good impression after myself! I was especially struck by the sharpness: 1,4 is quite working (and not particularly lame), you can cut yourself at 2,8. A very pleasant and intelligible focusing ring: turning the knobs is not stressful at all, the stroke is smooth. Thanks to the chip built from the factory, the metering worked adequately.

  • Anastasia

Who can help ! ? I want to put a lens of 110 mm 85 on the Canon 1.8 d. The goal is family shooting, children, portraits and full growth, shooting flowers for advertising. Thank you!

    • Taras

Obtain a portrait position. Tobto for family zyomka melodiously not pidijde. More beautifully, the standard zoom with focal lengths from 18-28 to 70-85 and aperture 2.8 For example Tamron 28-75 or Tokina 28-70 (80) the price is also much wider.

    • anonym

I shot them full-length portraits, the class has no words, even at 1,8, a sufficient depth of field, but to beat back 15 - 20 meters from the person you are shooting and explain how to get him at such a distance is just a mess.

Be so kind as to compare his forehead to his forehead with Jupiter 9. Very interesting) If suddenly my request is feasible, then shoot a couple of pictures into the worlds. I understand that you did the tests of this and that, but in the same conditions and in the same diaphragms, and also in the same article, it would be just great. Thanks!

    • Taras

Mav Jupiter 9 biliy 59roku and deniy kenon. In jupiter, the bokeh is slightly more plastic (the circle may not be even worse), the difference is slightly higher and the backlight is stronger; the contrast is lower (the hood is shorter).

Dlaczego nakłada na rosyjsko gadającym public swoje przysłówek?

    • Rodion

Sharpness will be much lower at all apertures for any Jupiter 9. If U-9 is LZOS, then there will be a striking difference. After LZOS Yu-9, this Canon is like rubbing your eyes.
The bokeh of Jupiter-9 LZOS will be “oily” with brightly edged circles, visually - as if “flying away” from the center (due to coma).
In the Ju-9, a good type of KMZ or Arsenal, the bokeh is very even, completely devoid of twisting, in contrast to this Canon. The distribution of brightness over the circle - with some excess in its center (with a slight blur - "pea", as in the I-26M).
In a soft backlight, Jupiter-9 will lose, especially LZOS. In a very harsh light (the sun is in the forehead) a good Jupiter-9 has a chance to win, because He has very few glass-air boundaries - in this case, the MC cannot save Canon.

Hello. The Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM on reviews on many sites is very good. Is it possible to install it on the Nikon D7000 so that it would not lose all its advantages?

Through the crossroads, it’s possible that there’s not inferior infinity, there you can take a photograph with a maximum of a meter.

Hello! Tell me, please, will the Canon EF 85mm f / 1.8 USM be good for the Canon 7D camera, as well as for the 60 D? Thank you in advance!

    • Taras

Ob'ktiv will be odd for portraits, chastkovo subject zyomka. Obov'yazkovo is required for 18-55 whales in the vicinity of them it is not easy to finish.

  • Sofia

Is it suitable for the Canon 600D?

    • anonym

I have 600 D. The lens works great.

  • Igor

Good day, everyone. A couple of weeks ago I made up my mind and bought a Canon 60D and this lens EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM to it. I ask you not to judge strictly for the question, after all, once everyone started out as “blind kittens”;) Is it possible with this lens to shoot a person in the foreground so that the background is not blurred? I closed the aperture, increased the shutter speed. But the sharpness of the entire frame cannot be achieved. Thanks to everyone who answers, and happy photos to everyone;)

    • Arkady Shapoval

It will be extremely difficult to remove a person by the waist, since this is a portrait lens. You can shoot a person in full growth on a closed aperture, while the background can only be slightly blurred.

      • Igor

Thank you very much for your answer, Arkady. Honestly, I didn't even hope for an answer from you;) I have a question for you, you are very intelligible for “dummies” (of which I am) explaining all sorts of subtleties of working with SLR cameras and lenses for them. Low bow to you and thank you very much for that. So that's the question. Why don't you sell photo courses on DVD, as, for example, your colleague from Moscow V. Slobodchuk does. For example, I would love to buy. (if you are interested, I can reset the link to his site, at the moment I am not resetting it, so as not to be regarded as an advertisement). As for this lens, I tried it in full growth and not a blurry background ... alas - it does not work. Even at aperture 22 .. Apparently this is still my difficulty. I hope to learn how to use it correctly.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Links to Radozhiv I forbid anyone. I don’t even know about the DVD, I'm more interested in photos than making money on courses, especially since I can constantly supplement articles on the site.

          • Igor

Arkady is possible and you will find something new for yourself on the site of your colleague. And if you can still provide a similar service, I will be among the first buyers. By sharing your experience and knowledge, you are freeing up space for new ones. Accept thanks again for what you are doing for us.

          • Ivan

            Comrade well done !!!
Made a quality website with worthwhile reviews on for example old Soviet optics.
One of the few standing products in Runet.
From myself I can offer help on Olympus write if interested.
In general, type in the type of students and, with them, dig through all the manufacturers with ratings, examples of photos and so on.
Expand and think about the proposal)))

And yet I returned it to the store for now. At open aperture in RAW, strong CAs (purple edging and dark background fill on contrasting transitions). In a camera or on a computer, when converting to JPEG, thanks to proprietary algorithms, distortions are very well corrected, but something remains, plus a low contrast. So I'll practice focusing manually with the Samyang 85 T1.5 (it has more flexible zoom and focus rings than the F / 1.4). The bokeh is no worse, the CA is much weaker, the colors are better and the contrast is higher. Sharpness is higher in Canon, so who is more important ... At 1.4 Samyang lathers, but if you do not sprinkle and zoom to 100%, it is acceptable for a soft portrait. Canon does not have this at all. And starting from 2.8, there are light zooms, the same Sigma 50-150 F / 2.8 OS - according to tests on the Internet, just a beast, however, 3 times more expensive and heavier :).

One of 2 really worthwhile lenses as part of the Canon review (and a 50nnik at 1.8 there too).
Almost perfect on a full frame.
The crop is already quite controversial.
The asset has excellent sharpness; portrait focal; pleasant weight and appearance.
Almost ideal for a photo studio in the pavilion.
Passive - workmanship has dropped noticeably in recent years.
When buying, test a few pieces on the mechanics of the front back focus.

Hello ! Today I wanted to buy a Canon 85mm f1.8, something (inside) is shaking, tell me if it should be so or not? And so the pictures seem to be good. He is alone, nothing to compare.

Something also dangles inside. New. Without a beck and a front. On one of the forums, a person unsubscribed that he has the same. I think this is the norm. It's strange that it's difficult for owners to shake and unsubscribe ...

      • Maksim

The lens is shocked. Nothing is shaking. There is nothing to shake there, except that the fly flew in and got stuck in the diaphragm :)

And it shouldn't seem like there is nothing ...

Good day to all. Maybe there will be an off-topic question. But it bothers me very much.
I recently got Canon 85 / 1.8 Fix, and this is what I found.
Not a big backlash (0.5-1.0 mm by eye.) Of the focusing ring. Whether the lens is on manual or auto focus. Moreover, there is backlash if you wobble the ring away from you. If you just rotate it to focus, the movement of the ring is smooth, without jerks .. the glass works without problems, everything focuses, works. no backing, no focus front ..) checked at the time of purchase .. I’m talking about backlash only focus rings. not backlash in understanding the connection between the lens and the carcass.
When buying, I did not find it. (
Help. Tell me, can everyone have it? Is it a marriage? Fault ..?

Alexander, I recently purchased this lens too. The same situation as yours. The focus ring is loose and when you dangle inside something dangles. I looked at several lenses in the store and they all have such "problems".

    I have a canon 60d.
    And I want to take one of them is 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8 ill Tamron SP AF 17-50 f / 2.8
I take pictures of weddings and take pictures as usual))) BUT! and now the video was shot on Canon 60d + 50mm 1.8 at 12 nights (without) video light. and it turned out to be normal.
In general, everything is needed (but just help me choose)

Wonderful lens! When I first met, I fell in love, although I went for 50 mm 1,4 Sigma. But there were problems with focus in 3 copies, so I changed my mind.
Constructive compared to 50 1,4 Canon is more serious, a large "hole" (in the sense of a lens through and through), a convenient focusing ring, everything is fine.
The picture is smooth, not to say that it is ringingly sharp, but has some charm of its own. I read somewhere that this lens gives a retouching effect. The bokeh is excellent, I compare it with my 50 1,8, it is tough and unpleasant in appearance (although before buying 85 mm I did not even think about it).
Autofocus is fast and accurate, again in comparison with a cheap fifty dollars, where marriage accounted for up to 70%.

In general, I love and use as a staffer for 550d.

True, fifty dollars haunts ... Still, with 85 mm in the room is very cramped, and 50 1,8 lathers and smears. Because I'm thinking about buying 50 1,4 or wait for fifty dollars 1,8 with a stub already, then they threw a rumor that it would be released soon.

For rooms, take 28mm or 35mm, it will be more appropriate, but portraits will have to be taken very carefully.
