Assembly

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D is well assembled. The lens body is almost all plastic.

When the lens entered stores, its price tag was $ 500.

The retractable body frame consists of two sections, one of which is plastic and the other is metal. The focusing and zoom rings are rubberized and pleasant to the touch. The lens barrel does not spontaneously lengthen during zooming.

The lens uses a plastic hood HB-16, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focus ring is lost. When changing the focal length, the hood moves with the movable frame of the housing.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Focusing

Auto Focus Speed - averagecloser to slow. During focusing, the lens is pretty noisy. When used on cameras Nikon D700 and and Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro the lens very rarely makes focusing errors, and the focus itself does not cause any complaints.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus, usually on the lens body this is indicated by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. But, unfortunately, during zooming, the front lens rotates, which practically negates all the benefits of internal focusing. The lens has the same trouble. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D.

The focus ring rotates only 60 degrees. During auto focus, the rotating focus ring cannot be touched with your hands.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D has a focus distance scale in meters and feet. The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 meters for 200 mm. One of lens weaknesses - inconvenience when shooting small objects, the maximum magnification ratio is only 1: 9.9. There is an orange stripe on the focusing distance scale with an 'M' which stands for 'Macro', although the 'macro' of the lens is very, very weak.

Also, there are two marks for 28 mm and 50 mm for work in the infrared spectrum. IPIG scale no.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D

Diaphragm

The lens aperture consists of 7 petals.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 28 mm - F / 3.5
  • 35 mm - F / 3.8
  • 50 mm - F / 4.2
  • 70 mm - F / 4.8
  • 85 mm - F / 5.0
  • 105 mm - F / 5.3
  • 135 mm - F / 5.3
  • 200 mm - F / 5.6

This lens has the largest number of marks with intermediate focal lengths among all Nikon lenses.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it; setting an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring is not possible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

Compatibility and Features

The lens is best suited for full-frame cameras, but EGF for Nikon DX cameras is 42-300 mm, where the ability to comfortably work with a wide angle will be lost.

Analog Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D for cameras Nikon DX are Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135m 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical и Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM IF Aspherical.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D

My experience

With the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D, it is difficult to shoot small objects, since it has a very large MDF. It was difficult for me to photograph a group of kittens, as I constantly had to move away so that the lens could focus normally.

For full-frame Nikon AF cameras, the Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D is a very convenient lens that cannot boast aperture, but very attractive for its price, image quality and 7x zoom.

When using Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D on digital SLR cameras I often set auto ISO mode and set the minimum shutter speed 1 \ 200 sec., so that always take a sharp shot without moving due to hand shake.

In our time, when fewer people are shooting on film, interest in old film zooms is disappearing, since mostly professionals work on full-frame cameras, using more expensive fast optics, and on cropped cameras, the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5- 5.6D requires a focus motor and gives not very convenient EGF.

This Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D I like much more than the new Nikon ED AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6G IF Aspherical.

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D

Image quality

Surprisingly, the lens showed good sharpness and generally good image quality in general. From the disadvantages - the lens suffers a tangible distortion and vignetting, especially at 28 mm and open diaphragms. Aberrations are present, but have a low intensity, as for a 7x zoom. In the backlight catches a large number of bunnies.

Results

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D is a good super-zoom for full-frame cameras, but for our time it has certain drawbacks: low focusing speed, large MDF, poor work in backlight. In the secondary market, the lens is sold quite cheaply.

“As professionals work mostly on full-frame cameras”
Sorry that I decided to get in here with my own, so to speak, ..., but, watching the “professionals”, I did not notice anything cooler than the cropped carcasses of 5-7 years ago (people “hawala” and so on), or I don’t lucky to see them. A full frame is, nevertheless, for the soul. As for me, this is for those who appreciate every shot and, fearing to lose something because of, for example, a flash that has not fired (did not have time to recharge), will be able to "stretch" the picture in the editor (which is much more problematic with a crop); this is for those who shot a lot on film and cannot forget the film DD, and have a lot of old lenses that “sound” in full frame, and for a couple of newspaper and magazine reporters together with self-respecting wedding photographers. Forgive me if I'm not right, but this is just the thought of a person who has been shooting for twenty years on film, and then on crop, and then on a full frame.

  • Arkady Shapoval

I just wrote more about weddings. In any case, on prop this 28-200 is bad.

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Thank you for your articles! It is interesting to read you (a follower of Nikon) and Medvedev (Canon). I myself like, for example, old lenses and your articles about them like honey. Favorite - Helios 53mm f / 2. Thanks!

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

“I just wrote more about weddings. In any case, this 28-200 is bad for prop "- Well, unless you really want to cut money and there are some ends in the ZAKS, then you can attach it to Nikon D80. Some kind of Chinese flash and head-on :-)
Interested in your opinion on the Nikon D800, especially in comparison with the D700? In my opinion, you have not written about this yet.

    • Arkady Shapoval

All praise, personally did not use, because I will not speak in vain. A couple of my colleagues sold everything that was and took the D800 with its large DD.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Clear. Because of this, I, too, practically took it, but now you can forget about long exposures with a small iso. So I wanted to know what to do - level hands, or carry a tripod, which I did not do with the D700

    • Arkady Shapoval

Lubrication due to micro-shifts and a large number of pixels?

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Probably yes. Seven hundred could shoot the rally while it was super sharp, and the 80-200 2.8F lens was a favorite portrait painter, shooting without blur on focal 200mm at a shutter speed of 1/80. Having bought eight hundred, I sold 80-200 because of the inability to remove it from my hands in the room (the tripod was not considered, as were the large ones due to noise and loss of DD). In exchange, of course, I got a more accurate exposure metering and 75 MB images :-)

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

If you need to, I can give them a few days to shoot - I appreciate your opinion

    • Arkady Shapoval

If in Kiev, we can exchange for a day.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Near Kiev. I could have given it tomorrow, but I don’t know yet whether I will have a shooting with my friend on Thursday. If so, then I’ll give a ride on Friday. But just in case unava@ya.ru Send your phone number - tomorrow I will know more precisely.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thank you.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Thank you for the interesting reviews. I do not agree with all the reviews, with R. Kent, for example, not always :-)

  • NIKI

There’s nothing like this, this lens is now standing on my Nikon d7000, the picture quality is Super!, In your pictures I see that, but not sharp pictures!, Everything is sharp on mine!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Please be careful not to write nonsense.

      • anonym

NIKI didn’t write anything stupid. Of course, Nikon 28-200 is not perfect, but it is very worthy of optics, and it needs to be able to own.

  • Alexey

Hello Arkady, I apologize in advance for the stupid question, but my hands are "painfully" itching, I have a D 3100 and have an offer to buy a 28-200mm f / 3.5-5.6D AF Zoom in good condition, is there any point in taking it? I'm going to use it as the main one.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Auto focus on the d3100 will not work, there is no point.

  • Alexey

Thank you, in general it is necessary to learn mat.chast and not **** to suffer)))))

  • Nicholas

Good health Arkady, I want to buy a Temron 28-200. for nikon d-90 ... I have nikon 18-55-nikon-55-300 and nikon-35mm-please advise me if I need to use it (deletant)

    • Arkady Shapoval

For you, I see no reason in buying it.

  • Nicholas

Arkady thank you for the advice useful to me, good luck to you ...

  • Sergei

And how much does the nikon-af-nikkor-28-200mm-13-5-5-6-d lens cost approximately?

    • Egor

Sergey, you can buy it on Ibei for 6000 - 7000 rubles. with delivery from Japan to Russia (Ural). Shipping from the USA will be more expensive. Americans are further away :) Much depends on your luck and desire to buy a lens!

  • Egor

Hello Arkady! First of all, thanks a lot for your reviews! You don't often come across reviews of a person who actually photographs and does not deal with synthetics :) Most importantly, there are good photographs, by which you can judge how the lens behaves in different lighting conditions. I now have a specific task to find a lens that draws stars well around point light sources. it turned out that all the new zooms and fixes do this unsatisfactorily because of the round apertures. Tell Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D will be able to draw stars at f / 8 - 11 (apparently the aperture is not rounded) and if you can give an example? How does it keep backlight in relation to newer G-series lenses (eg 24-85 or 28-300)?

  • Alexey

NIKI didn’t write anything stupid, Nikon 28-200, of course, not perfection, but for its price, very worthy optics, and, of course, it needs to be able to use.

    • Igorek

Given the age of optics, you can find a working copy without BEK \ front focus, or you can find a faulty sample that is artificially repaired and has a number of defects. How do shooting skills help you? And for crop there are more interesting lenses.

  • lesa

I am faced with the choice of staffer.
It seems to have already stopped at Nikkor 28-105 D 3.5-4.5
..but here Nikkor 28-200 D 3.5-5.6 caught my eye. In general, it is similar, except that the bokeh is worse. But focal ones are more attractive.
For me, focus speed (children) is important right now. Well, on the street, probably the first and second are enough light.

    To advise? For D750 .. thanks (:

Threat switched from Sony to Nikon, everything is so new.

    • lesa

      I will answer myself.
      Still 28-105 (:
Fast focus and small MDF outweigh ..

      • Arkady Shapoval

        A good choice :)

  • Ivan

I bought all glass, switched to focal, in principle, a convenient range even for a crop, much more convenient than 55-200. Now I'm sorry, slow focusing is only a small problem, autofocus is very often mistaken, especially if the focusing object is in the shadow. If you turn on the tracking autofocus, then on my d7000 it is generally unrealistic to get into focus, the focusing simply does not keep up with the subject. With this, data is transmitted to the camera that the object is in focus, in principle, the pictures are obtained, if f8 and they are not increased to 100% but printed at 10x15, then in principle you can put up. The second huge minus is that it fades quite strongly in the backlight, compared to the whale 18-70.
It helps a little if you close the aperture, but at sunset without a tripod you won’t take a picture, and with my 18-70 I don’t carry a tripod. In general, glass is unimportant. For the money you can buy a more decent lens

  • Ivan

I forgot to add, if you are going to photograph children, then do not even think to buy this lens. Marriage of pictures will be at least 30% or even more. Perhaps at full frame the motor is more powerful and focus problems will become less noticeable, but for example the 24-120D on my D7000 works just fine, and at almost the same price it is much better in all respects compared to 28-200

  • Olegjan

We all know what masterpieces Arkady removes from what used to be wretched glass. But even he could not draw anything good from this lens. Conclusion is a lens …… .. I don’t even know for whom and what tasks it can solve.

  • me too Arkady

Namesake and countryman, respect and welcome! Recently I bought an iPad in America, it’s not a luxury, but the same need as a car! I have been doing photography at the amateur level since 1954! I probably read all the publications of Radozhiv reviews. I switched the digital camera 3 years ago. The D50 kids got them and presented them. Now they presented the D90 and Sony A37! There were a lot of MF and AF lenses from NIKON CANON MINOLTA. Most of all I like CANON FD 85 / 2.8 soft focus , Minolta MD 50 / 1.4, Minolta maxxum 28-135 / 4-4.5, Nikon seriesE 28 / 2.8, 50 / 1.8 and Nikkor24 / 2.8, as well as AF Nikkor 35-105 / 3.5-4.5D. Now questions: 1. How does the adapter affect the aperture? How does the D90 and D50 crook affect the zoom? 3. Do I have many or few? 4.What do you recommend keeping for different purposes? If you can give them a characterization. We are united with you not only by love for photography, but also by love to UKRAINE. I am glad to meet you and grateful for the detailed and understandable reviews. Thank you.

    Arkadiy, good day!

You can be a weasel, say, do not remember,
if the manual mode has completed the focus, did the boolei have special sounds with it (not strong, easy)?
In me, on the object, there are two little clicks ("cik", "tsok"):
    - when the focal circle is right up to the infinity, here is 3 meters. ("Tsok")
    - that here is 1m - at rus up to 0. ("cik")

Dyakuyu to you for your pratsyu, she will be seen by you! Statues / look around - neymovirno corsnі and tsіkavі!

    Sincerely,
    Misha.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t remember anymore, but the focus gear there is noisy when you manually focus.

Hello Arkady! it turns out, if in 1998 hybrid aspherical elements were already used, then in the more modern of this line, and in others, are they even more so with plastic?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good day. It is necessary to look specifically at the type of aspherics, usually it is indicated.

  • Marc

Plastic as aspherical lens element is nothing bad. Nowadays 2022, my prescription glasses lenses are made of aspherical plastic lenses (Zeiss) and there are quite good!
