XM F Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm UMC Review

TTX XM F Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm UMC
Focal length: 50 mm
Diaphragm: F / 1.6-f / 16.0
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces
Optical design: 6 elements in 6 groups
Bayonet \ thread: native unknown, converted to Canon EOS
The weight: 170 grams
MDF: 60sm
Front Filter Diameter: 49mm

There is the same lens, only without UMC (UMC - Ultra Multi Coated, ultra multi-coated). Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm is a complete copy Fujinon-X DM 50 / 1.6. My lens has a Canon EF mount. Most likely, the lens was originally designed for Fujica X bayonet, I can not say for sure, because I did not see the original version.

Porst is a German brand under which Japanese lenses were sold.

Focusing on the lens is only manual. The focus ring rotates approximately 120 degrees. Focusing is smooth. The focus ring is rubberized. When focusing, all elements (lenses) of the lens move, and the trunk travels half a centimeter forward. Unfortunately, this lens is made a little worse than other old fifty dollars and the rubber on the focus ring in my copy slightly peeled off. Part of the lens body is made of plastic, so it is quite lightweight.

The lens has an unusual maximum aperture for fifty dollars - F / 1.6, usually fifty dollars have F / 1.8 or F / 1.4. F / 1.6 is 1.4 times darker behind F / 1.3. Still, the XM F Porst Color Reflex 50mm F1.6 is a fast prime lens.

Image quality at XM F Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm

The lens is sharp enough with f / 1.6. The lens gives a good contrast, can greatly catch sun glare. The contrast of the lens drops in side and back light. Vignetting, no distortion. With closed diaphragms, nuts appear in the blur zone. In general, the quality of the lens would be indistinguishable from the sea of other fifty dollars, but the Porst Color Reflex 50mm F1.6 gives an amazing bokeh. The view of the image is very interesting, unique. It may seem that the photos from the lens on F / 1.6 are not sharp, soft, this is due to a very small depth of field.

How to use on modern cameras

My copy has already been redone for use on Canon EOS cameras. How to use old lenses on modern cameras can be found in the section old lenses at canon. On a cropped camera, the lens can serve as a good portrait lens, act as a lens for photo experiments, art ideas.

All photos are taken on Canon 350D, APS-C crop = 1.6x. All filmed in RAW. Without processing, converted to JPEG 3MP, Q85% with auto levels. Added watermark with shooting options EXIF.

Personal impressions

Photo taken on Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm is now the wallpaper on my computer desktop. The lens drawing is very interesting and the lens is easy to use. Anyway - Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm Deserves attention. I find a lot of old lenses almost every day that are not so well known, but which might be of interest to hobbyists. Manual fifty dollars very often come across in hands, since fifty dollars is a kind of whale lens from old cameras. Manufacturers have tried and are trying to make the best lens, but old fixes can still please us with the resulting image for a long time, even when using a full frame.

Conclusions:

Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm - good high-aperture fifty (50mm fixed lens). The lens features interesting bokeh and compact dimensions.

Help to the project. Thanks for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

This is a lens from Fuji, its analogue, made not for porst, goes under their name Fujinon-X DM 50 / 1.6

  • Alexey

thanks for the great review, Arkady! another rare lens that I have not even heard of until today. In general, your articles awakened in me a craving for manual optics and now I can safely say that all ancient fixes are really a thing for the soul. for art photography. thanks for your hard work!

    After: Tomioka became a yashika

That we know, I'm just not a historical reference, to describe all the nuances))

How he remade described here http://goo.gl/Zjkh4

In fact, truly original lenses can only be bayonet lenses, not under M42, and Konics and Fujinons remain practically untested. On Olympus, however, Konikov's hexagons become (but there are 2x crop), but on mirrorless cameras it is also possible with an adapter (the working distance allows)

        • Arkady Shapoval

Sony Nex crop 1.5, but the adapters are expensive, it’s easier to do it yourself.

I shoot a lot with this famous lens. But on tape. This is Fujinon according to an interesting scheme of 6 lenses in 6 groups. UMC enlightenment is no worse than Pentax smc. It is a pity that the Porst 1.6 is very plastic and the x-Fujinon mount is difficult to adapt. I did not meet the adapter from Fujiki to Kenon. And the lens is gorgeous.

Tell me, why do I need an iron button on the aperture ring?

  • Gene jb

There is Vivitar 50 / 1.7 and so - it looks absolutely identical and the nature of the bokeh, judging by the pictures, is similar. Only here in the vivitar the diaphragm blades stick out, while this one seems to be closed. I bought it on ebee, screwed it to 400D with Chinese blende. I am glad. Only $ 20 and an incomparable image (vs KIT 18-55 and Sigma 70-210) And of course it allows you to shoot at more open apertures than whales. Strange, but I can't find helios - they have already thrown everything away or lost it. I would like to compare. Only the depth of field kills, with a standard focusing screen I often smear in low-light places. And with wedges, I think there won't be enough red dots on the whales. You can't change the lens and the focusing screen right there.

    Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm is a complete copy of the Fujinon-X DM 50 / 1.6.

This is not a copy, this is it. At the factory, a part of the Fujinons was produced with the inscription “Porst”.

Porst is the same Tomioka Kōgaku KK (or Kyocera).

Pig bullshit. Tomioka is a Japanese lens manufacturer later bought by Kyocera. Porst is a trademark of photographic equipment dealers. Some of the goods were ordered with their own inscription, some were simply bought and sold. With their inscription, a lot happened - from lenses made by Tomioka, cameras and Fujifilm lenses to obscene junk of unknown origin.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Send proof while the information about Tomioka is hidden.

      • nukemall

What is the proof? That Porst is a trading company that traded in all sorts of very different and from different manufacturers?

        http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Porst

Photo Porst was a German distributor and retailer of many brands of cameras. It was founded in 1919 by Hans Porst in Nuremberg, Germany. For many years Porst bought cameras from other manufacturers, among them Adox, Agfa, Balda, Braun, Dacora, and Franka, and rebadged them. In the early years, from the 1930s to the end of the 1950s, it used the Hapo brand, an acronym of Hans Porst. Later on, the house brand cameras appeared under the PORST name, eg PORST compact reflex or PORST 135 BS. In the 1970s the house-brand Carena was added. A lot of these later house-brand cameras were produced by Cosina, but also by Balda, Franka, Fuji, Mamiya, Taron, and Yashica.

I am the happy owner of this lens, I wanted to sell it, but then I decided to fasten it to the Canon 450D, as I understand it (judging by RO: Fuji-x = 43,5, Canon = 44), the mount is carried out as follows: the hvos is removed from the lens and instead a transition ring is placed (canon-m42, with drilled holes for mounting) 0,5 mm less than the native one, to preserve infinity?

        • Misha

focal length M42 45,5mm, if you take the M42-Canon adapter, you will have to grind off 2 mm from the lens tail (it's simple - it's plastic), or sharpen the adapter by 1 mm (if possible) and 1 mm lens, as I did showed it here: http://goo.gl/Zjkh4

  • Boyarin

and for Nikon how much to cut a skirt?

  • Boyarin

The answer is to myself. Maybe someone will come in handy. I compared the flange focal lengths and, at my own peril and risk, sawed off 3mm + 1mm (the thickness of the M42-Nikon adapter) = 4mm. The lens design is quite simple and easily disassembled. Infinity appeared exactly on a scale. I'm happy as an “elephant”.

  • Vladimir

Dear experts, tell me, pzhl ... I decided to buy the "Pentax M42 fit Porst Color Reflex 50mm f1.8 lens fits M42 camera mount" ... I don't understand much myself, but there is a question: will it work on Canon 42D with the Lushnikov M 6-EOS adapter? Thanks for the consultation.

  • Vladimir

And where was this lens redone?

  • Eugene

I did not dare to redo it - I decided to sell my Porst Color Reflex 50mm f / 1.6 in perfect condition. The price for aukro starts at UAH 500 for this and also Pentacon Prakticar B 50mm f / 1.8 (PB mount), i.e. from 500 for 2 excellent lenses for skilled hands. Write and I will send you a link to the auction.

The presence of a red reflex in each eye should be established; hold an ophthalmoscope about 30 cm from the infant's eyes. Dark spots in the red reflex can be due to cataracts, corneal abnormalities, or opacities in the vitreous.

  • Boris

Wonderful lens! I have it in the umc version on a Porst cr-1 film machine (Fujica). Waiting in the wings on a number. I'm looking for a way to switch from Fuji-x mount to eos, Canon. I even shot landscapes on him, and at 1,6 aperture. Very sharp this Porst-Fujinon all over the field, and bokeh is just a fairy tale. What color rendition! The only negative plasticity and budget design.

    • zengarden

The working length of the Fujica X is 43,5 mm, and the Canon EF / EF-S is 44 mm; the adapter most likely does not exist, but alteration is probably possible.

  • Anton

Tell me, why do I need an iron button on the aperture ring?
