Nikon Speedlight SB-700 Review

For the opportunity Nikon Speedlight SB-700 Flash Review many thanks Sergey Svirida.

Type of flash Nikon Speedlight SB-700

Type of flash Nikon Speedlight SB-700

Nikon SB-700 is an advanced amateur flash. An excellent alternative between professional SB-800, SB-900, SB-910 and unpretentious SB-600. And the Nikon SB-700 is much better SB-400.

The flash has a fairly compact size and a number of good properties, such as:

  1. Flash zoom from 24 to 120mm... This is a good indicator. Often amateurs use lenses like 18-55mm, 18-105mm, 18-135mm, for such lenses the Nikon SB-700 flash will be enough for head-on illumination.
  2. The flash may work in command mode Master and control other flashes that support the creative lighting system Nikon CLS. The flash can control two groups of flashes A and B. More advanced SB-900, SB-910 can control three groups of flashes simultaneously.
  3. The flash works perfectly in slave mode with Nikon CLS. I set fire to the SB-700 without any problems using the built-in flash on my Nikon D700.
  4. Unlike SB-600The SB-700 has the ability to work in SU-4 mode and set on fire by any pulse flash.
  5. The Nikon SB-700 has a built-in reflector card and built-in diffuser, which are hidden in the flash head. A diffuser is a very useful thing that helps out in difficult flash conditions.
  6. Comes with a flash two filters and a large diffuser. And in the kit there is a foot stand for the flash and a square case. It’s convenient to mount the flash on the foot and place it on a tripod to create creative lighting. But SB-900 has a cover that can be comfortably worn on a belt, unlike a cover Sb 910, SB-700. The Nikon SB-700 kit is pretty decent.
  7. The flash works on 4 batteries or rechargeable batteries. Recharging is fast, recharging is very dependent on the flash mode and the quality of the batteries or batteries.
  8. Of course, the SB-700 supports FP fast sync mode, which will allow you to shoot at any shutter speed up to 1 \ 8000s, which is very important for daylight.
  9. The SB-700 has a huge display on which all the settings are accessible shown. The SB-700 has a very nice flash switch.
  10. SB-700 has overheat protection. Bringing the SB-700 to overheat is very difficult, much more difficult than SB-900, SB-910. The overheat function is not disabled.
  11. The flash head rotates all 360 degrees, it is very convenient when working with lighting from the ceiling and walls. Also, the head rotates 97 degrees up / down.

Personal experience:

The Nikon SB-700 is a great value for money flash. It is lightweight, fairly cheap, and very functional. Nikon SB-700 works great in i-TTL auto modes. Prior to Nikon SB-700, to be able to remotely control Nikon flash units on unsupported cameras Nikon CLShad to buy expensive SB-800, SB-900. Nikon SB-700 was able to collect pleasant controls SB-900, SB-910 and ease of use by amateur photographers with the ability to work with Nikon CLS. I am often asked what kind of flash to purchase, I always recommend to fans and advanced users of the Nikon SB-700. Professionals themselves all know what they need. I personally use SB-900, SB-910 due to slightly more power and uptime in all conditions.

Conclusions:

Nikon SB-700 is a great flash. Best price / quality option from Nikon. The flash works in slave and master modes, has good power, quick recharge and compact size. Recommend.

Help to the project. Thanks for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

Hello, I am not an experienced photographer ... I bought a flash of sv 700, twisted it, studied it .. as a result, the information disappeared from the display showing: Effective distance range
flash firing range and Effective flash firing range. How to get them back? Thanks in advance.

  • Alexander

Tell me, can the built-in flash in the Nikon D7100 in command mode set fire to the external SB-700 in FP mode? Or does the SB-700 work in high-speed synchronization mode only on a shoe or with a cable / radio synchronizer?

    • Alexander

In general, I will answer myself. The SB-700 is perfectly set on fire by a built-in flash with a shutter speed of at least 1/8000, the only thing is that the built-in flash needs to be set only for control (“-“ mode).

    Good evening.
Please help me figure it out. There is an sb700 flash. It emits some kind of incomprehensible squeak inside after being triggered in an upright position (the sound is as if the door is creaking quietly, only very quietly). It feels like a condenser is charging there or some other electrical component, BUT in the forward position there are no sounds, after flashing there is just silence, and in the vertical one there is a squeak inside.
Tell me, please, what can it be…
    Thank you

    Hello!
Tell me, please, who knows: how does the automation of modern flashes work with old non-AF lenses? Nikon D7000 camera, Nikkor 105 / 2.5, 135 / 2.8 lenses.
I'm primarily interested in shooting outdoors (high-speed sync, backlit shooting). Never worked with modern flashes. Which in this case is preferable to buy - SB700 or SB800?

Arkady grate! May I have one problem ... I insert 700 vaparats and show me that I can only use the monuals ... TTL is not practical ... (battery charging in a new way) I want to set up minions in the future ... himself spalah pratsyu adequately)))

  • anonym

    Help please!
On sb-700 the zoom does not work zoomERR writes. What to do?!

  • Dima

    Hello!
Could you help me figure out this issue - I can not adjust the FP mode on the Nikon D90 with SB-700. In the custom camera settings menu (e1), the minimum available value is 1/60 and in all modes P, S, A, M. There is also item (e5) “Auto FP”, from the values of which I chose ON.
In the flash settings menu, I did not find specific instructions for setting the flash specifically to FP mode.
There is a suspicion that by choosing the shooting mode M on the camera and playing around with the settings for the shooting parameters, it will turn out that everything will work out, but maybe someone has solved a similar problem and is ready to share it?

Thank you, no need to reply. Found myself in the comments above.

  • Inna

Hello! Can you please tell me what kind of battery to buy for the SB - 700 flash? I bought Durassel and it was only enough for one time. ???????

  • Without іmenі

Arkady, your blog is a transnational find for amateur photographers, where all the useful information is presented at the level of understanding of mere mortals :)
Thanks so much for the work!
And the question is: will the Sat 700 work in tandem with the Sat 600 (such creative lighting for itself) in master-slave mode?
    Threat I'm new :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, of course it will.

  • Ivan

In TTL mode, the SB700 paired with the D7000, under exposure, in manual mode with the same settings, normal exposure. Before this, paired with the D3100, there was no such problem. D7100 took a used one, like everything else works fine on it, can there be some settings on the camera giving such an effect? exposure compensation by 0.

  • alexey

Any used things may be slightly buggy. maybe this fotik dropped, but who will tell you about this?

  • Grisha

Підскажіть, be caress, it is more beautiful to take a used sb-700 (a new boxed kit) than a used sb-800 (only a bit). sb-700 for 400 UAH road. D3200 Camera

  • Artem

Arkady, please tell me whether I should buy an sb-700 for the D3100, because some flash modes will not work on my camera (including the FP mode that I need)? Maybe something is cheaper, it’s with the functionality that will be fully implemented on the D3100?

  • Alexey

Hello, thank you, Arkady, for your reviews :-) I read and read, and how it came to buying an external flash, I finally decided, I will take the sb-700, it’s too bad without a flash on photo projects and weddings. Thank you for your work, I advise all friends to learn the materiel on your site. I wish you success, development and material well-being))

  • Oleg

Arkadiy pidskazhіt be-caress May d3100 i nissin di466 sleeps v_dmovlyaetsya pratsyuvati with some unobtainable assets in any mode. Chi will pratsuvati sb-700 in manual mode?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, it will work.

  • Boris

    Good afternoon!

I bought sb-700 - thanks for the review.

Tell me, how can she shoot in series? I put it on the camera, turned on the burst mode, two shots with a flash - then a dark frame, tk. the flash does not have time to charge. Is this how it should be or am I doing something wrong?

  • Boris

Forgot to point the Nikon D610 camera

  • washi

    it should be so

  • Andrei

Gentlemen, do you have AF-assist illumination illuminated by two LEDs or one? For some reason I have one burning.

  • lech

one, from the side where the letters SB-700

    • Andrei

ATP, in the instructions on page B-1 two are drawn, not fundamentally, of course, just stumbled)

  • jashur

Can this flash be used with a nikon p7700 camera. Whether any flash functionality is lost.

  • Mojo

I used the SB700, filmed in clubs with a soft box or bounced off the walls, and at one point the flash stopped responding and the AF illuminator indicator was just on. The SC said that the cable leading to the lamp broke off and struck the board ... The same problem befell my friend ... She also has an SB700.

  • anonym

Something I can't figure out: sb 700 if in I TTL mode add power correction to a plus, then the range of effective distances on the display becomes smaller, and if, on the contrary, reduce the power, it shows a larger range. For example: at 0,0 ev it gives 0,7-10 m, at + 3,0 ev 0,6-3,8 m, and at - 0,3 ev 2,0-20 m.What is the dog buried in here ?

  • lech

Sabaka is buried in the next.

if you want to illuminate the object more, that is, the “+” correction, then the distance to the object naturally decreases. if the correction is “-“, the distance increases, since we artificially underestimate the level of required illumination of the object and figuratively speaking, we are trying to deceive the metering by telling him that less light is needed, and the scoreboard on the puff will say that the object can be farther away. but there is a chance that there may be a lack of light.
