Nikon D1x Review

Nikon D1x Review

Nikon D1x Is a very old, flagship professional camera. You can see on my plate what place it occupies among all the central control rooms Nikon. The performance of the camera is one of the lowest among the entire Nikon CZK line, you can see for yourself in Nikon performance section.

Nikon D1x - rear view

Nikon D1x - Back View

Nikon D1x was released back in 2001 along with another flagship camera Nikon D1H. Please note that externally the Nikon D1 cameras, D1h, D1x are completely identical (except for the inscription of the name of the camera) and are built on the basis of the same body, therefore, it will be difficult to feel the difference in control and ergonomics.

D1x uses very unusual CCD sensor on 5.33 million effective pixels. This allows you to get a photo of 3008 in 1960, which is equal to 5.9MP. The matrix feature is that its real physical parameters are 4028 by 1324 pixels (5.33MP, with approximately proportions 1 to 4, not 2 to 3) The number of pixels placed horizontally remains the same as the Nikon D1, D1h (1324 pixels), but the number of pixels in width has doubled on the matrix, up to 4028 pixels. At the same time, the physical dimensions of the matrices of Nikon D1, D1h, D1x are the same. This is very unusual matrix structurein order for the camera to produce a normal image with an aspect ratio of 2: 3, you need to use a special interpolation algorithm that 'decompresses' the image. Considering that the matrix already has a Bayer subpixel structure, Nikon took some risk of degrading the image detail with such a sensor structure. In fact, this type of sensor doesn't 'feel' at all when shooting. For those who find 5.33MP small, I recommend my article Battle of Megapixels... Nikon D1x is the only camera with such a sensor. It's a pity that the technology was not upgraded, it would be interesting to shoot a matrix with such a pixel structure at 18MP.

Attention: cameras with new firmware can save image sizes 4011 by 2613 pixelswhich is equal 10.5MP. This mode is available in both JPEG and RAW. The unusual structure of the pattern of Bayer RGB sub-sensors allows drawing 10.5MP from the matrix to 5.33MP of real pixels.

Camera supports ISO 125-800, expandable to 3200 in Hi-2 mode. It's funny that the D1x has not yet reached ISO 100. A feature of the D1x camera is its very short minimum excerptwhich is 1 \ 16.000s. Thus, the camera can dose light in a smaller amount than even modern cameras at ISO 100 and 1 \ 8000c. With so short shutter speed you can wonderfully 'freeze' any movement. Minimum excerpt flash synchronization, too, is unusual, and amounts to 1 \ 500s. The camera does not support fast synchronization with the flash, but I met information that with the new firmware, the camera can work in FP mode and shutter speeds up to 1 / 8800s using a Nikon SB-28DX flash or similar. Yes, D1x does not have a built-in flash and can only work with external flashes.

Nikon D1x has built-in focus motor and can work with AF optics (with lenses without a focus motor). This will help save money using old lenses. For test shots in this review, I used just the old film lens Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor.

At the camera excellent ergonomics: two control wheels and multi selector, two monochrome displays. The camera does not require a booster, but immediately performed in a combo version of landscape and portrait orientation. Additional menu buttons are hidden behind a metal curtain, which is closed with a magnet. Unfortunately, under the blind there is a white balance control button and a programmable button. By the way, I set up a programmable button to select image quality.

The camera display is very small, with very small viewing angles. It’s very difficult to view the shot material on it. Basically, the display can serve as a guide to the camera menu, and you can also view the histogram of the captured image. Camera menu is not available in Russian.

The battery of the camera of the old type Ni-MH withstands up to 200 operations. This is a strong flaw in the camera. I have 3 batteries in the kit, which, from old age, can squeeze out 400 frames combined.

Nikon D1x has everything 5 focus points, for which Multi-CAM1300 is responsible. For some tasks, 5 focus points are very few. Measurement exposure carried out on the basis of 1,005-pixel sensor.

Total Burst Speed 3 frames per second. The same maximum speed is available in cameras by type Nikon D70, D70s, D60, D3000, D80. This is not enough. Frame buffer can accommodate 12 RAW files with any level of compression. Or, 19 JPEG files any quality. This is neither much nor little, for example, baby Nikon D3100 has 13 RAW files in its buffer. The buffer and shooting speed directly affect the efficiency of the camera. Nikon D1x can continuously shoot for 4 seconds in RAW format. RAW format always 12 bit and has a compression level setting: compressed \ not compressed RAW.

Attention: there is a firmware update for Nikon D1x which allows

  • increase frame buffer up to 14 RAW files and up to 21 JPEG File
  • You can set the compression level of RAW
  • Software can convert 12 bit RAW in pictures with 16-bit color depth
  • You can save pictures with 10.5MP
  • New firmware costs over 200 cu

Attention: D1x supports CF cards up to 2GB only. D1x couldn't process my card CF 4GB and especially 32GB. In RAW format, the camera can hold a total of 256 images. One RAW file weighs approximately 8MB.

Features of automatic white balance

Automatic white balance in the cells Nikon D1h, D1x can shift a lot into cold tones. From this Nikon received the label 'Nikon blue'. If you switch BB in another mode, for example, in 'cloudy' or 'shade', then everything falls into place. I showed an example of 'blue' in the photo below - WB Shadow rendered colors almost correctly as they are in real life.

Personal experience:

A true professional camera. Nikon D1x is a huge leap forward in camera engineering from 2.6mp in Nikon D1, D1h up to 5.33 on the Nikon D1x. I watched Nikon D1x instead of mine Nikon D200but in D1x I really get confused by a very bad battery, lack of support for large memory cards, lack of flash (not as flash as its command mode), very small display on which it will be difficult to show something to the client. And Nikon D1x is not able to work in matrix metering. exposure with manual optics, and focus points are not enough. And as for a professional flagship camera, the viewfinder is quite small and does not cover 100% of the field of view. In short, by today's standards, the Nikon D1x is not suitable for professional use. I liked the color reproduction in the pictures with Nikon D1x.

Gossip

  • Rumor has it that gum stretches on all Nikon cameras from old age. Nikon D1x does not apply to such cameras, its gum is still in place.
  • Rumor has it that from age Nikon D1x loses its ability to work on shutter speed in 1 \ 16000s. This is not so, my copy in the manual camera control mode shows a different histogram for the same picture taken at 1 \ 8000s and 1 \ 16000s.
  • Rumor has it that different Nikon cameras have different focusing motors. Using Nikon D1x, I was convinced of this. The focusing motor is very strong, turns the 'screwdriver' very quickly, in comparison with other cameras it stands out for its aggressiveness and strength.
  • The Nikon D1x is rumored to be blue - yes it is. An example of not quite correct BB shown above.
  • There are rumors that updated firmware allows you to take pictures with 16 bit color depth, it’s not, the camera continues to shoot with 12-bit RAW, and the updated Nikon Capture software can take 16-bit pictures from snapshots.
  • Rumor has it that updated firmware allows you to shoot 9 frames per second in JPEG or TIFF and 6 frames per second in RAW (NEF)... I did not check this, but my opinion is that the camera processor physically could not squeeze 9 fps, it can barely cope with this Nikon D3.

Conclusions

Nikon D1x - a very unusual old camera that can still please with excellent image quality. Can be used for photo experiments. It is very morally outdated at the present time.

  • Ivan

Yeah, old Nikon, but if you choose in the same price range between the soap box and him, you probably would have taken it, still a serious device, and it sits well in your hand and you can put serious lenses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Actually, the noise is not so scary :)

  • 10111

It’s worth a review of Kodak full-frame to do. Great camera.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If someone gives, I will describe.

  • Figurehead

Good evening, tell me how to find out the mileage of such a camera? the fact is that picking NEF from several fruits found on the D1X network about the mileage did not bring ... so the question now is how to find out (because there is a desire to order this particular machine at one of the flea markets, but there is absolutely no information about the mileage)

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the D1 line, there is no such function, I myself tried to determine the mileage via EXIF.

  • flueg

In the states, there is now a peak in sales at insanely low prices and another question is on the test, a camera with or without an “updated” buffer…. A very strong tank in terms of quality.

  • flueg@mail.ru

There is no answer so I add: Nikon D1x also has extended models (firmware update) introduced in late 2002, which contains a much larger memory buffer and offers at least 200% improvement in 3 frames per second continuous imaging drive. Immediate benefit, 21 JPEG images or 14 Raw images can also be shot at a moderately fast shooting speed of 3 frames per second. In addition, Nikon Capture 3.5 is supplied The software also allows 10-megapixel output for raw data files, the software now allows full 16-bit image quality and vignette control of wide-angle lenses, for use either in studio or post-processing Raw NEF files this area. Combined with high performance Write accelerated Lexar cards - as in the PowerUp D1X cards Kit.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Even Nikon D16, Nikon D4 do not have 800-bit image quality, especially this old man. And the difference between 14 and 12 RAWs in the buffer is very small.

  • flueg

Dear Arkady! As I assume you are the owner of an already updated version
Nikon D1x You can check the following: Nikon D1X and D1H Nikon: Firmware Ver. 1.10: Available November.
Adobe 1998 ICC profile embedded in images shot in Color II mode automatically opens in Photoshop ™ 7 or other software that supports color profile management.
Support for the latest Lexar Media Pro Series Compact Flash media with Write Acceleration technology. (Increases write speed up to 30% depending on the file format selected).
Recording Lens Information. Nikon's unique D and G lenses such as distance-stored information enable the operation of the new Vignette control features in Capture 3.5.
    Exif 2.2 (Exif Print) compatibility.
Improved battery detection. The LCD panel icon blinks when a depleted battery is detected.
Menu. The new Spanish language menu option brings the total to five: EN / FR / DE / JP / Es. The color of the menu for changing the appearance from blue on a black background (by analogy with the D100). To take full advantage of the added features, Nikon Capture 3.5 and its subsequent updates ... are required.

  • flueg

Why is any Nikon camera advantageous? (with the basic and higher configuration) - the possibility of subsequent updating in the process of "obsolescence" and exceptional reliability. Example: 10 Mega output pixel selection for D1X NEF files. Uses the original sensor data (4016 × 1324) and interpolates to deliver a 4016 × 2616 10M file. User can select this option or original 3008 x 1980 (6M) files.
Large selection of sketches. Create a large thumbnail (1600 × 1063) for files saved in NEF Capture 3.5 format. Useful for high speed review in Nikon View 5 draft review.
Automatic control Vignette. A new function designed to neutralize the effects of light from falling (vignetting) at the edges of certain images, especially when shooting at maximum aperture. Nikon Capture 3.5 can automatically adjust the maximum illumination (vignetting) to achieve optimal results with the NEF format of images shot with a lens that produces a D signal (D or G type), the camera is equipped to record this information. D100 or D1 series cameras upgraded from recently announced firmware (D100: .. Ver 2.00 and D1 series Ver 1.10). Capture 3.5 recognizes this information from the built-in lens adjustment algorithms and compensates for any vignetting that may be obvious. The function is also user adjustable via manual slider control for D100, D1X, D1H with previous firmware versions, or D1. *
Speed increase when using Mac OS. Faster (up to 15%) reading, writing and displaying time and save times increased by 25%. May vary depending on the specific system specification.
New features: monitoring of selected points. The information palette can be used to monitor red, blue, green and average values for the four selected points. The palette list of "before" and "after" values for each of these points allows a more refined assessment of any changes in the settings in the image settings palette.
Refined Color Noise reduction function. This changed from “pull down” to choose one of three levels: low, medium, high, with a “slider” choice of new ten levels.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This firmware is nothing more than an attempt to save obsolete cameras.

  • flueg

As for Nikon D4, Nikon D800, CMOS capabilities are worse than CCD ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

In order not to speak in vain, please give some examples where the Nikon D800 matrix will lose to the Nikon D1x matrix.

  • flueg

The twelve-year difference does not allow direct comparison…. But all Nikon topslide scanners have a CCD, and this is a proven one - the best color solution. But the price to pay for this quality is speed. The .CCD also has low noise, high stability, and a wide signal-to-noise ratio for crisp, bright, smooth images. Both the D1x and D1H use a precision Low Pass Filter just in front of the CCD to virtually eliminate color dithering and moir6 impact on detailed models and high contrast edges. The proof is in your pictures (we're talking about color) ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

What do scanners have to do with it, because we are talking about cameras? You have not given a few examples where the Nikon D800 matrix will lose to the Nikon D1x matrix. The noise level of this old D1X is simply critical compared to the D800 and D4 at any ISO values. Look at the colors of my Nikon D800 photos, and then speak for D1x.

  • flueg

    Well, I looked and that's enough with y x o ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

However, you have not given a few examples where the Nikon D800 sensor will outperform the Nikon D1x sensor. This means only one thing - there is nothing to write too much.

  • flueg

In fact, the review is very fair and worthy ... I was hooked only by 12 bits, which took place in the first year and a half of the series, up to the number 5145001, then until 2004 (already with the possibility of "raw" 16 .... I apologize for writing a long time (no time - therefore only instant clumsy translations from Nikon) ... - yours faithfully Nikon fan with several decades of experience.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nevertheless, one does not need to write so seriously that the D1x can compete with modern cameras.

  • flueg

And in terms of color with comparable formats and class of DX and FX optics, in equal average conditions, it is far from a fact ....

    • Arkady Shapoval

The D1x used a full-frame lens to create test shots. Also, what you call 16-bit depth is just interpolation from the original 12-bit RAW using Nikon Capture software. To inflate 12 bits to 16 is not a problem, here there is no more information to add, and such inflating makes sense only for some moments when printing, editing.

  • flueg

I'm talking about the same thing (the full frame of the lens gave additional glare from the mine ...) you used 12-bit mode ... (and when recalculating both directions twice - although as you yourself noticed, there is a "charm" in this case, the neighboring pixels are integrated programmatically) This matrix is really unique (collected all the know-how of that time from Kodak, Canon and my own) was too expensive. Its best mode is 10M (a special algorithm of only one side) and 16 bit in RAW, with “native” processing. Sorry for the time for screenshots - this matrix has a very complex geometry.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It does not have 16 bits in RAW, only software draws 16 bits, otherwise, provide these same 16-bit RAWs.

  • flueg

from Technical Specifications for Nikon D1X Digital Still SLR camera OR For now, just this: Please note the camera's image actually has resolution higher horizontally at 4028 x 1324, while after conversion, the output image has been readjusted back to 3008 x 1960. The enlarged file sizes also resulted with higher spatial resolution, higher image sharpness and a host of other additional advanced features, all benefited from Nikon new software for improved color reproduction, color balance and exposure management. The camera also has a new update version of software to manage the images, Nikon Capture Software (also workable with earlier Nikon D1) which is able to yield full 16-bit image quality and post-processing of Nikon's NEF (Nikon Electronic Files) raw CCD data plus a host of other file formats.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is taken from mir.com.my, and it says nothing about 16-bit RAW, but only that Nikon Capture Software can output 16-bit from a RAW file, and the RAW file itself has 12 bits.
Capture 3.5 can now process nef files produced by the Nikon D1X to 10MB in size, resulting in better potential for making large size prints directly from NEF files. Original NEF files are still 12-bit ^)
Raw data file size of 7.6MB at 12-bit color depth can be processed to a 33.6MB (34.4 megabytes for enhanced model) 16-bit color depth file via “Nikon Capture 2 (3)” software... Original NEF files is still 12-bit ^)

  • flueg

This is a translation: Please note that the images from the camera actually have a resolution higher horizontally at 4028 x 1324, and after conversion, the output images were adjusted back to 3008 x 1960. The enlarged file sizes also resulted in higher spatial resolution, higher definition images and many other advanced features, all the benefits of Nikon's new software for improved color reproduction, color balance and exposure control. In addition, the camera has a new version of the image management software update, Nikon Capture Software (also practically from the Previous Nikon D1), which is capable of giving full 16-bit image quality and post-processing of images in Nikon NEF format (Nikon Electronic Files) raw CCD data as well as a host of other file formats

    • Arkady Shapoval

RAW file can be processed via software to a 16-bit color depth, but original RAW file from Nikon D1X is still with 12-bit color depth. This is just software interpolation, but non true 16-bit color depth from the ccd sensor.

  • flueg

raw CCD translated as raw CCD

    • Arkady Shapoval

D1x CCD sensor do not produce 16-bit RAW. 16-bit RAW is producing by software - and this is not good feature. Where did You get 16-bit RAW file with D1X? Here is official Nikon site http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d1x/index.htm and there isn't any 16-bit RAW even with Nikon Capture 4

  • flueg

Rumor has it that engagement sometimes interferes with objectivity (4028: 1324 = 3)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, to believe the rumors is not a noble cause, real masters check everything with their own experience, because in this review there are no 16-bits, and 4028: 1324 have approximately 4 to 1 proportions, for that matter, then 3008: 1960 = 1.5 and what it says?

  • flueg

Of course there is no way to access Nikon Capture Software in the open air before pressing….

    • Arkady Shapoval

Hoping on the set to finalize the photos is the same as hoping for the surgeon that the patient himself will become healthy.

  • flueg

The studio version is like scanning from Photoshop ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

And what do you say / write for one, and then switch to another? They couldn’t write anything about the D800, they couldn’t provide reliable information about the 16-bit, did they jump from the open air to the studio?

  • flueg

16-bit only or in studio or post-processing….

    • Arkady Shapoval

      This is good.

  • flueg

You can carry your laptop with you, but it is 16-bit NEF (with refined colors)…. Post-processing is slightly worse.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I will repeat myself not for the first time - if this is a real 16-bit NEF from a Nikon D1x camera, then give a link to look at it, for now these are just empty words, and the proof links point exactly to the opposite, that 16-bit NEF is only available with software pull from 12-bit NEF using Nikon Capture software. Is it really so difficult to send a link to a file, then all the disputes would have subsided at once.

Joseph Wilson, on July 11, 2010

I used Canon 1D and then decided to go with the D1X for some people this sounds like blasphemy.

So it has an odd pixel and image arrangement in JPEG / TIFF 5.3mp format but when I use it. NEF (RAW) and open it in UFRaw (GIMP attachment) it opens as 10.6mp. I found that it uses a 10.6mp sensor that combines pixels together to get amazing crazy colors with amazing quality much faster to use than even the IIn Canon mark. I can translate all my settings, easy to use switches instead of holding down a button and rotating a giant disk.

Body AF fast motor AF fast AF really everything is just funny fast and accurate. The metering is well done and has several parameters for customization.

I would recommend partially d1h for D1X just because FPS

    • Arkady Shapoval

Maybe you still send a 16-bit RAW, because we spoke precisely for him, and not for who uses which camera.

    Great camera, even now ...

Leo Koach, on October 20, 2011

I just bought this camera from our studio, which we had 15 of them, most of them didn't work due to the operating conditions over the years. From Amazon I ordered a Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens and battery for that. However, I try with D1x studio 50mm 1.8 and it works fine. I have a Canon 40D and before that I had a Canon 30D and before that I had a Canon 350D and none of them can produce shots that are good and sharp. Colors are amazing, focusing very quickly and in place. I just can't tell you how much I love this car right now, if this break I am thinking of buying another one ... In fact, I am going to buy another one whenever I have a chance, because now they are crazy inexpensive (even used good ones).

This is about the camera, it creates amazing pictures and its accessibility. Go to :)

Change to tell you, I have 3 (three) these cameras now ... they all work very well, I don't even know how much shutter speed they count, but rumors around say 200K for each machine ... Well, since Nikon has built a tank, which lasts forever;)

    Nikon D1X

    By D. Olson, January 1, 2008

I have my own D1X for 6 months now. One question, some of them is senior technology. batteries. Personally, I did not go with Nikon batteries, but I bought batteries from BatteryBarn. Great price, service and warranty.
The image quality is fantastic with colors and rendering as close to the movie as possible (Velvia), and that's all I saw.

    I use 17-35f / 2.8 Nikkor, 28-70f / 2.8, 70-200f / 2.8, 85f / 1.4, 50f1.4 and they all do well.

I regularly make A3 (13 × 19) prints that are beautiful and don't hesitate to go much more.

One thing. Viewing the image on the LCD will make you feel like a garbage shot, but trusting your abilities and the D1x when they are opened are simply amazing.

The focus is fast and accurate with any AF-S lens or screw. The meter is very accurate.

They may be from the older generation, but those of us who use them love them.
