Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor review

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor review

The Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical is the legendary fast zoom lens. The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is a nanocrystalline monster that is ideal for a variety of photography needs. When buying a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor, you can be sure that your money is not wasted, because the lens has 3 ED glass elements (Extra low dispersion) and 3 more aspherical elements ASP and one element with a nanocrystalline coating (NanoCrystal Coat, N).

Optical design of the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor will work great on any Nikon digital SLR camera, since the Nikon 24-70mm N has a built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor) focus motor. Nikon 24-70mm N can work on both Nikon FX full-frame cameras and Nikon DX cropped cameras. When using Nikon 24-70mm N on Nikon DX cameras EGF will fit 36-105mm.

Example f

Attention: Nikon DX cropped cameras may have difficulty creating shots that require a wide angle. because of crop factor on Nikon DX cameras, it is better to use DX lenses of the type 16-50mm, 16-55mm, 17-50mm, 17-55mm. For example, for cropped cameras Nikon DX is more suitable for a number of tasks 17-55mm f / 2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom nikkor. For the curious, I can say that the Nikon 24-70mm N field of view in the full frame of the Nikon FX will be the same as the 16-47mm lens on the Nikon DX crop.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has very fast autofocus. I was surprised by the focusing speed. Focusing is very quiet, there are very few focusing errors, and when an error occurs, the lens rebuilds very quickly. The lens has only one M / A - M switch. In the M / A mode, automatic focusing is available, and at the same time, you can correct or focus manually. In M mode, only manual focus is available.

In manual focusing mode, the focus ring rotates only 90 degrees, it is difficult to focus on focus. Most likely, the small stroke of the focusing ring is used for fast automatic focusing. Of course, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has a focusing distance indicator from infinity to 38cm. It's funny, but MDF, which is only 38cm, can serve to get a meager macro 1 in 3,7. Nikon could easily add the 'Macro' prefix and add a couple of hundred dollars. in the cost of the lens.

Of course, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has internal focus. As befits all professional lenses, when focusing, the front lens does not rotate and does not move back and forth. The front filter, too, has a professional large diameter of 77mm. In terms of focus, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor shows excellent performance.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor lens has a metal mount and weighs quite a lot - about 900g (almost a kilogram). For Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor, professional Nikon cameras are best suited, with which the camera can maintain weight balance well. Sergey Svirida, who provided me with a lens for review, tried to shoot on Nikon D5100, the idea was bad in that the lens constantly outweighed the camera and rested on the stomach when the camera hung on a strap on its neck. I used Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor on the camera Nikon D700With it, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikko behaved very nicely.

The zoom (zoom) ring rotates 90 degrees, the ring rotates quite tight. When transporting the lens, the trunk of the lens does not protrude. The only small drawback of the lens is the exit of the trunk when zooming. Usually professional lenses of this class do not change their physical size when zooming, but the trunk of the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor leaves just a little bit.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor comes with a hood that can be worn backwards. The hood has a latch that locks into position on the lens.

Background blur on Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 N

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has an aperture with 9 blades, which is higher than normal. When the diaphragm is closed, fairly flat discs are formed in the blur zone. The minimum aperture is F / 22.

Alternatives

The only native alternative is Nikon 28-70mm f / 2.8 D AF-S, all other lenses from third-party manufacturers. Often, under the alternative Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor gets a simple little old Nikon 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D AF IF Nikkoras well as a very popular replacement are Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) and Sigma AF 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM. There are also similar ones: Sigma AF 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO, Sigma AF 24-60mm F2.8 EX DG, Sigma AF 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG, Tokina AF 28-70mm f / 2.8. Seriously compete with the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G so far can only Tamron 24-70mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD и Nikon 28-70mm f / 2.8 D AF-S. But still, after a day of using the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N, Nikkor is unlikely to want to use anything else.

Image Quality on the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

First of all, I would like to note the excellent sharpness in the center throughout the focal length range. The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of the few zoom lenses that comes close in sharpness to prime lenses at full aperture. The lens is resistant to backlight. The lens's only drawbacks are 24mm distortion and vignetting at open apertures. The lens gives good contrast and color reproduction. The bokeh of the lens is very nice and soft.

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor sample photos

All photos were taken on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and an APS camera Nikon D700 FX. All photos without processing, RAW -> JPEG, Q = 80%, reduced size to 2MP, data from EXIF. You can still see photo from a walk on the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and Zorkiy-4.

Personal experience

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor features a yellow thin border around the front lens - which means the 27-70mm N is a professional lens with the ultimate in build quality, image quality and value for money. The lens really deserves attention and is well worth the money. Some people say that the lens is heavy, but personally I did not feel tired of using the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor at all, as I have to work with heavy photographic equipment every day. Weight is the price of versatility. It's funny, but a fifty-kopeck piece (50mm) can partially replace this Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and get a better aperture. 50mm is the middle of the 24-70mm range, (24 + 70) / 2 = 47mm. With the hood on, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor looks very impressive. Also, Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of three Nikon zoom lens icons:

  1. Nikon 14-24mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor
  2. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor
  3. Nikon 70-200mm f / 2.8G ED VR II AF-S N Nikkor
Example photo on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Example photo on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Roughly speaking, having these three lenses, you can cope with any photographic task that requires a range of 14-200 mm, which is the most frequent and required operating range for a number of photographers. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is not in vain for wedding photographers, I myself know that at the wedding this Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor will be a very good working tool for the photographer. Actually, I recommend all Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor wedding photographers working on a full Nikon frame.

Conclusions

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of the best zoom lenses from Nikon, the best of its kind in the mid-range for Nikon. Sharp, fast, heavy, expensive. Recommend.

At the beginning of August 2015, an updated version for this wonderful station wagon was presented - Nikon N VR AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8E ED.

Hello Arkady! Do I understand correctly: the viewing angle of 24-70 on the FX is approximately equal to the angle of 17-50 on the crop (25,5-75). Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G is a rather expensive lens and if I do not plan to switch to full frame yet, will Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8 be a normal analogue to it, it is more accessible nevertheless. Thanks for such a wonderful site!

  • Sergey Ogorodnik

I use 24-70 2.8 by 7000, but I don't have a wide angle, but what portraits are obtained at 70. And before there was Tamron 17-50 2.8, how much was dumped with him, the picture is such a tortured, no color rendition, on an open back focus, and especially when there was a commercial filming, in a word, got rid of it and is happy, took 24-70 a little expensive but it's worth it ... I advise everyone

  • Tatyana

Good evening, Arkady! I shoot on Nikon D80, now I choose a zoom lens for wedding, sequential shooting (18-135 was before), so I’m lost in doubt how the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED fits on the D80? Or Also choose between:
    1. AF NIKKOR 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D IF
    2.AF-S DX NIKKOR 17-55mm f / 2.8G IF-ED
In the future I plan to take Nikon D800 ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Since the transition to the D800 is expected, it is worth spending money on full-frame lenses, in this case, 25-85.

  • Boris P. Kuzmin

    The question is almost Shakespearean: NIKKOR 24-85mm f / 2.8 or Sigma 24-85mm f / 2.8 (latest version)?
The fact is that I like the picture of Sigma more. She is alive, some, in comparison with Nikon (the photo was compared from e-net). I would not want to make a mistake and pay substantial money for an insignificant advantage.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If you like the picture, then the question is resolved by itself.

      • anonym

Thank you for your prompt response :)
I mean, you, Arkady, have never used both lenses? If yes, then YOUR OWN IMPRESSION of the picture. Not expanded, only “yes”, “no”, “+”, “-“.
I just don’t really trust pictures from the Internet. I believe you personally!

        • Arkady Shapoval

I have never used Sigma, it’s hard for me to give practical advice.

  • Alena

Arkady, they gave me Nikon d80 + 24-70 for the weekend. I'm generally a beginner, so stupid question. How do I change the aperture value? Unfortunately, they didn't give me instructions. I could not find it on the Internet. Sorry if you made me laugh.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Find the PASM modes on the shooting mode selection wheel, set A mode, use the wheel near the index finger (when grabbing the camera with your right hand) set the desired aperture.

  • Alena

    I clarify that the Nikon 24-70 / 2.8 G lens

  • Alena

    Arkady, thanks!

  • Elena

Arkady, hello! I decided to switch from Nikon D90 to D600 (children's photography), there are 50- 1,4, I am considering this lens 24-70 for purchase. At the beginning of the article, it was said that the lens is heavy, and if it is used with the Nikon D600 (after all, its body is not as strong as the d700), the lens will not violate the integrity of the camera body ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Should not break.

  • Peter

    Arkady, hello!
Please tell me, I’ve been shooting for more than a year on the D7000 with a whale of 18-55. I got a SB-700 flash and I’m not overjoyed, now I get a good picture on the premises.
But it’s not the first time I’m thinking about changing a lens.
I don’t plan to switch to full-frame in the future, I’m doing it exclusively out of love for photography. My choice is between:
    1) nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX;
    2) 24-70 f2.8, described above.
I am more interested in portraits, but sometimes I shoot landscapes with reports.
So the question is: which of the lenses to choose, will 24-70 justify itself on the crop, or will 17-55 be the most MOT?
At 17-55 I saw bokeh - too, it seems not bad ... unfortunately I did not take pictures myself, only photos from the reviews. Thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

For crop 17-55 the very thing.

      • Peter

        Thanks for the advice!!

  • Denis

Arkady, good evening! This question is interesting: does this 24-70 have the effect of a “vacuum cleaner” like Nikkor 17-55 f2,8?

  • Ilya

Arkady good morning! the other day they will bring Nikon d600 I hope that with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED I wanted to ask if the lens is suitable for club shooting.? or use the whale 28-85 which comes with the D600, and I also want to ask a fix for the identity of the club, do not tell me which one to take ..? while thinking on Nikor 20mm

  • Snowball

I use the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor lens when I shoot in the evening I connect the built-in flash to work. Then the shadow from the lens in the photos. What to do and how to deal with this Nikon D700 camera. Help me figure it out !!

    • Dmitry

I had the same problem. Shadow at the bottom of the frame (especially with a hood). I dealt with this very simply. If there was enough money for such a lens, then there was enough money for a normal external flash. There is no other way to solve this problem. )))))
Separate, many THANKS to Arcadia for such a good, affordable and useful site!

  • Gennady

    Arkady, say wise and weighty)
I'm going to buy a 24 and I'm faced with a choice: 70-2.8mm f / 24G ED AF-S N or 120-4 / 24. I like watching and filming people in the city, genre scenes. And therefore more focal tempts. How significant is the difference in picture quality, in your opinion? Rockwell generally considers 120-XNUMX to be the best daily routine.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I didn’t use 24-120, I can’t say anything on this lens. For street shooting, you need something longer than 120mm, however, it also depends on the methodology itself and your approach.

  • Gennady

Thanks. I will probably dwell on 24-70. For a longer one I have 70-300 / 1,4-5,6, for now, enough)

  • Natalia

Thank you Arkady for your useful thoughts !!!
    I have a D7000!
    What to take!?
    50 1,8G and 28 1,8G or 24-70 !?
    Thinking of shooting weddings!

For weddings 24-70. My hands do not reach YouTube, in addition to Radozhiva, I also have my work as a photographer :)

      • Natalia

And in quality I will win all the fixes in one 24-70?
They didn’t answer !, Do you teach paid lessons in photography?
And on account of YouTube in vain !!!!!, from the views you will pay YouTube money!
And you will have an excellent video blog without problems !!!! (my friend has a friend vilsakom)
        Good luck !!!!!!!!:) *

        • Arkady Shapoval

These are difficult questions. For a wedding, you need both fixes and zooms, 24-70 is a good all-rounder for running around, for something refined you need fixes. I have a blog - not chatting on YouTube, I'm not interested. Yes, I do training. When there is a recruitment in groups, there will be an announcement.

Hello Arkady! Thanks again for your work, it is clear that you like your business, since you have time for the ocean of teapots around you))) I ask you for help. Advise me a lens as a lens for a Nikon d7000 in the area of $ 500-600, and for a Nikon d5100, well, for this something like up to $ 700-800. I have been sick for a long time, and this will be the first DSLR. I can not decide to take a cheaper carcass and more expensive lens or d7000 carcass, so to speak for growth)) and lenses to supplement as knowledge grows. And yet - I am tormented by a question about Nikon d5100 penta mirror, d7000 pentaprism ... (I have already studied the differences in them), but still how much it affects the difference in image quality. Yes, I like to shoot everything))) and landscapes and macro and portraits and my son, who is fast moving)))) I even thought about Nikon D90, but since it was taken out of production, it’s dumb to take it ... all the same, the model is outdated, but reviews are excellent camera .... I really look forward to your answer. I also want to take a s700 flash, I really want to learn how to work with it))) For everything about 1500-1700 dollars.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Pentaprism or penta mirror - this does not affect the image quality, but the convenience of sighting. The D7000 will grow, the lens will start at 18-70 and in addition take 50 1,8, since for 600 USD. Nikon does not have anything intelligible from the staff for the crop, only Tamrons, Sigma, Tokins from the range 17-50 2.8. If, after all, 18-70 does not fit, then you will have to look for a good option in the face of tokin, tamron, sigma.

      • Tatyana

Arkady thanks for the prompt reply! Good luck in all your affairs and undertakings !!!!

  • Sergei

Good afternoon! I have a d7000, I bought myself a nikkor 60 2.8 micro. So I think what to take, 17-55 or 24-70, in our city the price is the same for a used one - 30000. I don't seem to be torn at ff, I shoot for myself. Tell me which is better

  • Maksim

Hello Arkady, I have a question regarding the NIKON AF-S 24-70 F / 2.8 G that I recently purchased. I found that with an increase in focal length, back focus appears. At 24 mm it is not, and accordingly at 70 mm, it is maximum. Tell me, how characteristic is this for zoom lenses? Maybe I'm just too picky?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Occurs sometimes. Perhaps very picky.

  • Konstantin

damn, everything’s not bad, but how can one make such terrible-quality photos with SUCH LENS ??))

blurry, awful pictures ... .. I understand that for review, but not as much ... already upset. I just think that EXAMPLES of photos are no less important than the text component

    • Oleg

bone, you can enjoy the bright pictures in Google. From these examples, one can adequately judge the quality of prof. lens as far as possible for zoom. You can shoot a dozen or two super-artistic photos and make the readers gasp, but this is not an article on the topic: "This is how I can." So don't growl.

Question about the 24-70 and Nikon D7100. This coming weekend I will have a chance to shoot the anniversary of my mother-in-law. There is a trembling in the hands for obvious reasons. I thought of renting this 24-70 just for a party. The case will be indoors, a wooden building (walls, ceilings, building in the shade) and outdoors. The hall is not big - there are 120 squares. The flash (youngnuo 565) is charged. The question itself is the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED or the existing Sigma 17-50mm f / 2.8 EX DC OS better in such a room?

    • Denis

Deivis, a couple of weeks ago I filmed a wedding in a wooden room (a cafe-restaurant), there is a tree all around - there is no way to reflect the flash, I turned my head in different directions 500 times per evening, I had to try very hard. I think the lens of any of the above will do, but with the flash it will be necessary to be smart (there will definitely be moments when it will be necessary to attach a diffuser and direct it at an angle “almost to the forehead,” reducing the power of course).

  • Sergei

no one spoke of a serious mechanical problem in the construction of this lens.
it is clear that in RuNet there are not many owners of such a lens, but nevertheless,
googling it is easy to find numerous complaints about the breakdown of the zoom - due to the plastic guides.

those. paying 1600 dollars for a new lens, you have good chances to pay another 400 dollars in six months
for repairs. for the same reason, buying a used 24-70 is not a good idea.

    • Jury

Before buying, be sure to check what you are buying. I don’t know what you are talking about. I bought my lens in November 2010 and to this day works perfectly. Even after the Vienna and Berlin zoos, where there is a likeness of the African jungle with very high humidity.

  • Michael

strongly soap on the open in conjunction with d800, or the marriage was caught (

    • Jury

You must check either with your carcass lens or with your lens carcass. Checked.

  • Novel

... Seriously compete with the Nikon 24-70mm
f / 2.8G so far only Tamron can
    24-70mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD ...
I used two Nikon and Tamron. I bought Tamron, it is in no way inferior to Nikon. The lens is just super. The weight is almost equal to + there is a stab ... Take you will not regret it

    • Alex

I agree with you completely. After some hesitation, I took Tamron 24-70 f2.8 USD. Nothing inferior to Nikon on my d750. And it seems to me that he draws a picture even better than Nikon.

      • anonym

        really, it just seems!

  • Denis

Good afternoon, Arkady and the connoisseurs of thoughts on this site.
Slowly but surely I approached the full-frame (d600), glasses in the presence of 50 / 1,4 and 85 / 1,8. Commercial photography is present in the form of banquets, weddings, photo walks ...
I consider the "set" and face a choice: "Nikkor AF-S 24-70 mm F / 2.8 G ED" or "Nikon Nikkor AF-S VR 24-120 mm F / 4 G ED". Am I thinking correctly?)) The advantages of 24-120 include additional 50mm and, of course, the price with a difference of 20.000 rubles. Aperture is an important thing, but when shooting with a "standard" lens, mainly at aperture of 5,6-9 .. is it important? Again, the "golden ring" on the rim wins over))) Consider pliz)) What am I mistaken?)

  • Hangman

Arkady, good afternoon. I join the question (Denis 30.07.2013/09/00 at 24:70). How is 2.8-24 / 120 versus 4-24 / 120 subjective and objective? I have 4-24 / 70 in stock, but still I look towards 2.8-24 / 120 due to some slowness of autofocus at 4-24 / 85 and unimportant sharpness. By the way, the new 3.5-4.5 / 24-120 VR in sharpness is very much superior to 4-XNUMX / XNUMX due to which it finds more frequent use.
In general, is it worth looking towards 24-70 / 2.8 or leave it as it is? I would be grateful for the answer, and if the detailed answer, then even more.

    • Denis

And here are some subjective thoughts))
Hey. Kindly tell me, "unimportant sharpness" is it in comparison with what? And what "body" do you use? The fact is that I heard about 24-120, that it is super sharp even in comparison with 24-70 ... and probably the concept of “sharpness” is still relative in part?)) I worked for some time exclusively with fix glasses, whale not when it was not, and after them on tamron 17-50 / 2,8 a feeling that some kind of smoothing, although from the side they say a sharp frame. Maybe we are already making it up?))
And how is the overall feeling about 24-120? Is it worth its $ 1200?

      • Hangman

D700 carcass. Unimportant sharpness - here these words can only be repeated. Rather, it is quite good, if you do not compare it with anything. 24-120 / 4 is somewhat similar to the old screwdriver 28-105, something reminded me of the cropped 18-105. At the moment, having 24-120 / 4 and a new 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR, I would not buy 24-120 / 4 (although how would I not buy it? Until you try for a few days, you will not understand. here without buying in any way).
After 24-120 / 4, the novelty in the form of 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR gives just a gorgeous picture, the detailing is already off-scale, almost pixel by pixel sharpness, which is not observed at all in 24-120 / 4 (but not soap, I would say soft) .
In general, I use more 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR as a travel destination. It is both lighter and smaller, and not that much sharper, but clearer, each eyelash from it is voluminous, as if outlined, and not just a flat picture, a bit like porridge. The only “but”, although also under a huge question, is the hole 4.5 versus 4 (I think it's the same thing).

There is a desire to try the discussed 24-70 / 2.8, but there is simply nowhere to take "for a try" - just buy. And I don't really want to buy a lens that is quite weighty for the price without any advice or feedback in comparison with the existing ones.

        • Hangman

Forgot to add. Autofocus speed in 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 VR is SUBJECTIVELY (partly and objectively) one and a half times greater than in 24-120 / 4. Not fundamentally, it seems, but a constantly worn child is 24-120 / 4 more difficult to shoot because of the slow autofocus.

Autofocus seems to be famous for 24-70 / 2.8, but again - there is nowhere to try.

          • Denis

            Thanks, very good. expanded))
            In a word - a witch hunt)))
            Maybe the way out is: change “Nikor 50 / 1.4 ″ to Nikon 24mm f / 2.8G (28 / 1,8)”, and “Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G” to “Nikon 105 (135) / 2,8” and there will be happiness?)))
