Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor review

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor review

The Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical is the legendary fast zoom lens. The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is a nanocrystalline monster that is ideal for a variety of photography needs. When buying a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor, you can be sure that your money is not wasted, because the lens has 3 ED glass elements (Extra low dispersion) and 3 more aspherical elements ASP and one element with a nanocrystalline coating (NanoCrystal Coat, N).

Optical design of the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor will work great on any Nikon digital SLR camera, since the Nikon 24-70mm N has a built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor) focus motor. Nikon 24-70mm N can work on both Nikon FX full-frame cameras and Nikon DX cropped cameras. When using Nikon 24-70mm N on Nikon DX cameras EGF will fit 36-105mm.

Example f

Attention: Nikon DX cropped cameras may have difficulty creating shots that require a wide angle. because of crop factor on Nikon DX cameras, it is better to use DX lenses of the type 16-50mm, 16-55mm, 17-50mm, 17-55mm. For example, for cropped cameras Nikon DX is more suitable for a number of tasks 17-55mm f / 2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom nikkor. For the curious, I can say that the Nikon 24-70mm N field of view in the full frame of the Nikon FX will be the same as the 16-47mm lens on the Nikon DX crop.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has very fast autofocus. I was surprised by the focusing speed. Focusing is very quiet, there are very few focusing errors, and when an error occurs, the lens rebuilds very quickly. The lens has only one M / A - M switch. In the M / A mode, automatic focusing is available, and at the same time, you can correct or focus manually. In M mode, only manual focus is available.

In manual focusing mode, the focus ring rotates only 90 degrees, it is difficult to focus on focus. Most likely, the small stroke of the focusing ring is used for fast automatic focusing. Of course, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has a focusing distance indicator from infinity to 38cm. It's funny, but MDF, which is only 38cm, can serve to get a meager macro 1 in 3,7. Nikon could easily add the 'Macro' prefix and add a couple of hundred dollars. in the cost of the lens.

Of course, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has internal focus. As befits all professional lenses, when focusing, the front lens does not rotate and does not move back and forth. The front filter, too, has a professional large diameter of 77mm. In terms of focus, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor shows excellent performance.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor lens has a metal mount and weighs quite a lot - about 900g (almost a kilogram). For Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor, professional Nikon cameras are best suited, with which the camera can maintain weight balance well. Sergey Svirida, who provided me with a lens for review, tried to shoot on Nikon D5100, the idea was bad in that the lens constantly outweighed the camera and rested on the stomach when the camera hung on a strap on its neck. I used Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor on the camera Nikon D700With it, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikko behaved very nicely.

The zoom (zoom) ring rotates 90 degrees, the ring rotates quite tight. When transporting the lens, the trunk of the lens does not protrude. The only small drawback of the lens is the exit of the trunk when zooming. Usually professional lenses of this class do not change their physical size when zooming, but the trunk of the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor leaves just a little bit.

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor comes with a hood that can be worn backwards. The hood has a latch that locks into position on the lens.

Background blur on Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 N

Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor has an aperture with 9 blades, which is higher than normal. When the diaphragm is closed, fairly flat discs are formed in the blur zone. The minimum aperture is F / 22.

Alternatives

The only native alternative is Nikon 28-70mm f / 2.8 D AF-S, all other lenses from third-party manufacturers. Often, under the alternative Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor gets a simple little old Nikon 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D AF IF Nikkoras well as a very popular replacement are Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) and Sigma AF 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM. There are also similar ones: Sigma AF 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO, Sigma AF 24-60mm F2.8 EX DG, Sigma AF 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG, Tokina AF 28-70mm f / 2.8. Seriously compete with the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G so far can only Tamron 24-70mm F / 2.8 Di VC USD и Nikon 28-70mm f / 2.8 D AF-S. But still, after a day of using the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N, Nikkor is unlikely to want to use anything else.

Image Quality on the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

First of all, I would like to note the excellent sharpness in the center throughout the focal length range. The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of the few zoom lenses that comes close in sharpness to prime lenses at full aperture. The lens is resistant to backlight. The lens's only drawbacks are 24mm distortion and vignetting at open apertures. The lens gives good contrast and color reproduction. The bokeh of the lens is very nice and soft.

All photos were taken on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and an APS camera Nikon D700 FX. All photos without processing, RAW -> JPEG, Q = 80%, reduced size to 2MP, data from EXIF. You can still see photo from a walk on the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and Zorkiy-4.

Personal experience

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor features a yellow thin border around the front lens - which means the 27-70mm N is a professional lens with the ultimate in build quality, image quality and value for money. The lens really deserves attention and is well worth the money. Some people say that the lens is heavy, but personally I did not feel tired of using the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor at all, as I have to work with heavy photographic equipment every day. Weight is the price of versatility. It's funny, but a fifty-kopeck piece (50mm) can partially replace this Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor and get a better aperture. 50mm is the middle of the 24-70mm range, (24 + 70) / 2 = 47mm. With the hood on, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor looks very impressive. Also, Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of three Nikon zoom lens icons:

  1. Nikon 14-24mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor
  2. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor
  3. Nikon 70-200mm f / 2.8G ED VR II AF-S N Nikkor
Example photo on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Example photo on a Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor

Roughly speaking, having these three lenses, you can cope with any photographic task that requires a range of 14-200 mm, which is the most frequent and required operating range for a number of photographers. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is not in vain for wedding photographers, I myself know that at the wedding this Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor will be a very good working tool for the photographer. Actually, I recommend all Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor wedding photographers working on a full Nikon frame.

Conclusions

The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor is one of the best zoom lenses from Nikon, the best of its kind in the mid-range for Nikon. Sharp, fast, heavy, expensive. Recommend.

At the beginning of August 2015, an updated version for this wonderful station wagon was presented - Nikon N VR AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8E ED.

    Good day!

Please tell me, you mentioned earlier that you are using a Nikon D700 camera. I would like to receive a recommendation from you. I also shoot on the Nikon D700 and I have two 50mm and 100mm lenses in my arsenal, I completely manage with these lenses, I mostly take portraits and food, but I need another lens with a wide angle for documentary photography and I'm trying to decide this lens is 24-70mm or possibly another photosensitive fix from Sigma 1.4Art 24mm or 35mm. For example, I need to photograph a room or some kind of landscape. I want to choose the right lens. Could you advise me something from your personal experience.

    • Koba

yes I used D700 for over a year and then gave it to my son. Now he is shooting, and I bought D3s. If you need 24mm (I myself will be taking 24mm soon), then in my opinion there is one point - in most cases autofocus is not required, since at 5.6 aperture set at 2 meters on the scale, the depth of field is up to 11 meters with 1,2 meters. And at aperture F8 - from one meter to infinity. And in real life, the rest of the parameters can be set manually with auto ISO. Even the sharpest available is the old Nikon 20 / 3.5 ai, if you can find it, and it's made like a tank. Sigma art is just great lenses, but big and expensive, and sigma autofocus is often lame. But all sigma has one big drawback - they do not give high micro contrast (this is an unfortunate English term for the ability of a lens to convey more gradations of one or similar colors), and the picture always looks poor, especially if it is colorful or black and white. But the zoom from Nikon 24-70.2,8 is a gorgeous option, it can shoot everything, and its micro contrast is one of the highest among the zooms, for and the aperture is 2,8, and I consider the incredibly high speed and tenacity to be even the biggest advantage for it autofocus, which often negates all other advantages of other lenses. We must also take into account the fact that companies invest all their most advanced technologies in professional high-aperture reportage zooms in order to distinguish themselves and keep the reputation, as well as retain professionals, so they cost their money. After such a zoom, so for me a light fix may be required for a very narrow range of tasks. Personally, if you already have 50 and 100 mm lenses, I would recommend you get a 17-35, 20-35, 15-30 or 14-24 wide-angle zoom. The latter is also the only wide-angle zoom with high micro-contrast. And if you really need to blur the background, that is, or the unique Sigma 24-35 / 2, which is inexpensive (about $ 500) and is the pinnacle of optical engineering from Sigma, a really good lens with excellent bokeh, it is essentially specially designed for this ...

did you know that this lens is in two versions, and it’s not at all a new one, with a stabilizer,
namely the "G" version and also the JAA802DA, which differs optically, by the weight of mdf !!!

It has always been a mystery to me for people asking such questions to have a d850? 🤔

        So it goes like this:
        - Oh, Vova, I want a cool fotik for myself, so that it was the coolest of all!
“Shit question, kitty.” Look, some kind of Nikon for almost two mowers. Will it go?
        - Nothing like that, pretty. Will do.

  • Ivan

Quote: Usually professional lenses of this class do not change their physical size when zooming, but the trunk of the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor leaves just a little bit.
I measured it - this "a bit" is 20 millimeters, which is a lot for a non-small and not too light lens.
As for the sharpness, I will say this - I also have 28-70 2.8, so it is sharper, as in my opinion.

  • Alexander

Arkady hello, From all that has been written, I realized that the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical lens can be installed on the Nikon D7500 and it will work fine. But the FR will be 36-105, I am the most interested in everything that starts from 35FR. I have a sigma 18-35 f1.8 I just want to collect light lenses, but there are not so many of them on the crop. So I decided to build a fleet of them under-frame. If you can advise me something from the light ones, I will listen carefully. I will not Pro, but I do it seriously in my opinion. There are shooting at dusk or with stage lights. in halls and at concert venues. I would like to hear your advice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

by 18-35 it is not worth 24-70, but for your tasks look at the fixes, for example, at 50 1.4

      • Alexander

I would like something from the zooms, Maybe there is something cheaper. I like zooms more. I have fifty, but I like the zooms more. I have to shoot landscapes a lot.

    I use this. Great impressions.

I recommend trying Nikon on another camera (preferably 810-850 or D3s-D4-D4s).
My friend has D3x and 24-70 / 2.8G and in general he is satisfied with it, but he still prefers to shoot with fixes.
Rent a D850 with this lens and see how it goes. I didn't like the D750 and sold it (stayed on the D4).

  • Dima

Hello. I would like to ask for advice. Interested in a 24-70 lens. I plan to take BU. Nikkor 24-70 2.8g, Tamron 24-70 di vc usd and Tamron 24-70 di vc usd G2 fit the budget. For myself, I determined that one of these three would be the best choice for me.
However, I can't decide which one to get. The image stabilizer seems to be a good thing, but is it really needed (my nikon d750 camera allows you to use high ISOs). On some forums and reviews they write for a serious superiority in the picture and autofocus nikkor 24-70. On other resources they write that the tamron is very slightly worse only in autofocus, and in the picture they are conditionally equal. Tamron version 1 in autofocus is slightly inferior to the first two, plus there is no support for the Z mount. Although at the moment I don’t know how I feel about this either (I don’t plan to switch to mirrorless in the near future). But you can find it cheaper than anyone else.
Please share your thoughts on these lenses.
    Thank you in advance!

I wonder how great this tamron is, I did not have this model. I looked on ebay, and they sell them there, mostly with defects. I suspect the fragility of the structure, since such things.
I can’t stand tamrons, I haven’t come across a very successful one yet, but 20 pieces of them have passed through me already)

Good afternoon! Who can tell me what is the difference between a 24-70g ed lens with an inscription in gold letters and a black background, and the same one with an inscription in gold letters and a gold background next to the inscription?

    • Dmitry Kostin

It seems to be nothing - sometimes this black background begins to peel off over time and it is erased (sanded off) completely to this “golden” background.
I saw such collective farming on Tokins and Nikons at the Avito flea market.
