Review of World-3V 3.5 / 65

TTX Mir-3V 3.5 / 65
Focal length: 65mm
Diaphragm: F / 3.5-f / 22
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces
Optical design: 6 elements in 5 groups
Bayonet \ thread: Bayonet B
The weight: about 600g
MDF: 0.4
Front Filter Diameter: 88mm

There are several modifications of this lens, for example Mir-3B 3.5 / 65 with bayonet mount B (Pentacon SIX) and option World 3 3.5 / 65 Zebra. The differences are only in the mount, the method of controlling the aperture, the number of aperture blades and the cosmetic differences of the lenses. The lens has a younger brother Mir-38B 3,5 / 65which replaced World 3.

Attention: this lens from medium format camera, therefore, he will not show his work in all its glory even at full frame. On a modern camera, this wide-angle medium the lens turns into a lens with a standard field of view. MIR-3 in medium format will work like a 35mm lens in full frame, or 24mm in crop, thus providing a wide viewing angle. It's funny, but on a full frame, and especially on the crop, with MIR-3 you can get quite decent portraits.

How to use on modern cameras?

For use, you need an adapter from the Salute cameras to your system. I used this lens with an adapter KP-88 \ N (Salute-Nikon) with the ability to focus on infinity without any problems. True, the lens got the opportunity to fly for infinity. For more information on how to use such old vintage lenses on modern Nikon DSLR cameras, see Soviet optics... How to use on Canon - find in the section old lenses at canon.

Focusing

Focusing on the lens is only manual. The focus ring rotates about 270 degrees, with the front lens moving forward 3cm. Focusing is comfortable enough.

Assembly

My copy of 1977 release. Build quality on top. The lens in the hands feels like a piece of solid metal.

Diaphragm

The aperture of the MIR-3 lens is automatic, blinking, manual control of the diaphragm is available, which makes it very easy to use the MIR-3 on modern CZK. The lens has a depth of field scale.

Image quality

Believe it or not, the lens is sharp to insanity. Distortion on my narrow format camera is minimal. Vignetting is minimal. The lens catches bunnies very strongly. In all other respects, the image quality is excellent. At one time, the lens cost a lot of money. I highly recommend reading the comments to stock number 4, and look at what options were offered by readers.

All photos in this review are without processing. Everything is filmed on Nikon D700, reduced size and imprinted data about the shooting.

Personal experience

I never thought that Mir-3V 3.5 / 65 could produce such an image quality. On the camera, the Mir-3V 3.5 / 65 looks no worse than the Nikkor 14-24 mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S with its unusual large convex front lens.

Conclusions:
Mir-3V 3.5 / 65 is an excellent medium format lens. Very sharp with amazing close focusing distances. Recommend. Also, you can look at one of the lens modifications - Mir-3 3.5 / 65 'zebra'.

Great lens, congratulations to the winner!

  • alenfeeling

    thanks! ;-)

  • Paul

Great review. I would also like to see the photos taken with this lens on the crop.

    • Arkady Shapoval

So far, I cannot fulfill such a request.

  • Ivan

I got this lens along with others in the appendage. At first I thought to sell it, because neither focal nor aperture impressed me.
But having shot them a little, I liked him. Gives a beautiful picture, rich colors, plus a small MDF allows you to use it for subject shooting. And as a bonus, its unusual appearance on my D3100 looks serious and impressive, it’s nice to hold it in my hands.

Good review, super action, the puzzle with the cat is great :)

Quote: “I used this lens without any problems with an adapter KP-88 \ N (Salyut-Nikon) with the ability to focus at infinity.”. I don't know much about bayonets B. Did you have an adapter with a lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, without an adapter. More details in the section Soviet lenses.

  • VALENTINE

Still, do not catch bunnies when most of the light does not fall on the matrix, but on the camera cavity outside of it! I already said about the meaning of using wide-format optics on a digit (see Mir-38B review).

  • Andrei

    Good evening !
I want to increase the angle of view for shooting architecture with Nikon D3100 -
I wanted to put the lens MIR-3V 3. 5/65, but they say that the D3100 with a cropped matrix and as a result the wide-angle will not work?
What do you advise or about the wide-angle you can score?
    Thank you for the answer!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not just say the Nikon D3100 is a smaller sensor camera. Cheap whale lenses can act as a wide-angle, and shooting architecture, etc. requires closed apertures, therefore, the poor quality of the kit lens does not play a role here. To understand which lenses to look for, go to the focal length section, where find the numerical value that will correspond to you.

  • Andrei

Advise on the Nikon D3100 as a wide-angle something from sovetskih lenses?

  • Alexey

Should I buy MIR-3V 3.5 / 65 for Nikon D7000? They want for it 400 UAH. thanks for the answer

    • Arkady Shapoval

For what purposes is Mir-3 planned?

  • Alexey

    Shooting of landscapes, architecture

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it does, the lens may be suitable for these purposes, the only thing on the crop will be a bit narrow.

  • Alexey

Understood thanks. Or maybe there is a more suitable option from Soviet optics?

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are many options, look, you can find something in the section https://radojuva.com.ua/photo-review/ I note that wide landscapes are in demand for landscapes and architecture, and Mir-3 on crop gives an EFG of 97 mm, which is quite problematic for shooting in the indicated genres, in more detail in the section on crop factor and focal length.

      • Alexey

        Thank you

Hello, please advise which lens is better for portrait shooting (renting my kids)? It is possible to take Jupiter-37A, Mir-38V and Zenitar-M50.
