TTX Mir-38B 3,5 / 65

Focal length: 65 mm
Diaphragm: F / 3,5-F / 22.0 with intermediate values 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces
Optical design: 6 elements in 5 groups
Bayonet \ thread: Pentacon Six, P6, Bayonet B
Front Filter Diameter: 72mm
The weight: 550g
MDF: 0.5m

Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 is an excellent lens for medium format, has become a replacement for the good old Mir-3 3.5 / 65. There were at least two rim options Mir-38B 3,5 / 65, and also an option for B mount. Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 from this review works seamlessly on modern digital full-frame cameras. It's funny that on the medium format Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 is a wide-angle lens, on a full frame it is a standard (normal) lens, and on the crop it is already a short telephoto lens, on which you can even shoot portraits.

Due to the large working distance of the Mir-38B 3,5 / 65, this lens can be easily installed on any modern central defense and defense complex. I used Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 on Nikon cameras through an adapter KP-6 \ N (Pentacon SIX \ Nikon). How to use Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 on Nikon cameras can be found in the section Soviet lenses... How to use on a Canon system - see old lenses at canon. If you are looking for an adapter from the medium format for the B-mount, then you can order it from the contacts in the manual optics section.

The lens has a smooth focus. The focus ring rotates 270 degrees. MDF is 50cm, which is pretty good. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk leaves 1-2 centimeters forward. The depth of field indicators are indicated for F4, 8, 16, 22. The Mir-38B has a good depth of field, focusing on sharpness is quite simple.

Bokeh on the Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 lens

Bokeh on the Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 lens

Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 has automatic iris control, but manual iris control is also available. The number of aperture blades is only 6 pieces and those with a terrible yellow metallic sheen.

The general plan for the Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 lens and a closed aperture

Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 is very well assembled... Without an adapter, Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 is not at all large in height. But the weight of the lens is simply awesome - 550g, in the hand such a small lens seems to be made of pure iron. The diameter of the front filter is also very large, equal to 72mm. My 1979 copy was made by the Arsenal plant and still works wonderfully.

Image quality

Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 showed good image quality. The picture is very sharp at all apertures, good contrast. You will not notice the distortion by eye. Full frame vignetting is minimal. A strong drawback of the lens is its strong 'aimlessness'. A metallic shiny aperture only degrades the quality when working with strong light sources that enter the frame. Surprisingly, this wide-angle Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 showed good bokeh.

Everything is filmed on Nikon D700 APS Full Frame. All photos without processing. Reduced size to 2MP and imprinted data from EXIF. True, in this review I did not imprint the aperture value, as I got confused in my entries, and on the camera in the lens menu without a CPU I did not change the aperture. Also, you can see another gallery in which all photos were taken on Mir-38B 3,5 / 65.

Personal experience

Medium format lenses are always a pleasure to use. They have some kind of magic of their own, because they are one step higher for a full frame, and two steps for a crop. Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 is no exception. Its weight and size, as well as excellent sharpness and pleasant bokeh, turned the lens from a wide angle into a dark standard lens. The lack of aperture is not felt at all, because F / 3.5 is only 1,5 times darker behind F / 2.8.

Conclusions:

Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 - simple good medium format lens. If Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 could work with backlight, then there would be no price for it.

I see no reason to use wide-format optics for digital. On full frame - wherever it went. But on cropped, this is a super overkill: both excessive illumination of the camera cavity outside the matrix (reflecting on the matrix, it will give a parasitic exposure), and monstrously overweight. Moreover, you can always find an analogue among the optics for 35-mm film SLRs.

    • Ivan

There is some truth in this. But there are also benefits. Medium-format optics give a volume that ordinary lenses do not give, after shooting with such optics, I want to shoot it even despite the dimensions, weight and spurious flare.

By the way, partially striking flare is suppressed with the help of lowering rings wound on the front thread. Thus, the flush area of the front lens is reduced, and if you put a lens hood later, it will be even better.

      • Alexander Malyaev

Thank you, I did not know this. Most likely, this remark is also valid when using FF glasses on crop, or does it not give such a significant effect?

    • Arkady Shapoval

As a counter example, I cite the comments to my action number 4, where the enigmatic lens was a medium format wide lens - https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/09/hard-to-find-lens/

You said that correctly. In general, such pampering is done by amateurs who have nothing to do, i.e. hobby. Professionals have a different motto: versatility and only zoom works here. The more serious the professional, the more expensive the zoom can afford. I have never seen photographers dragging such pribluda behind them. Yes ... you can meet budding wedding photographers, they still have a field for experiments. But mostly there is no time to think about it. As an operator, I was sometimes asked to take pictures, I rented equipment from a friend and did the job. Desire to shoot faster and get down to processing. All.

      • Serg

how did grandfathers shoot without zooms and autofocus))) and sometimes filmed better than modern SVA dealers from whom charisma is more than parasitic illumination))

      • Dan

Vitaly, people in the video clip industry still use it. Prof. photographers - also depends on the field of activity. They use photos in the product.

      • Vladimir

Vitaly, such “professionals” have one task - to cut down more dough, why do they need art (((And learn Russian, it's a shame! (((

    • Dan

The point is, at least, that all this is easily hung up on Nikon. The second meaning is low price. At the same time, the image quality of many medium format cameras is excellent.

    • ba3lur

... a 72mm metal lens hood on Ali costs only $ 1.5 ... I use a medium format Vega 12B on a Nikon crop, I'm happy with the result ...

“If Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 could work with a backlight ...” Ark! Well, again “dreams, dreams, where is your sweetness! ...” Well, the Boeing 747 cannot fly like a Phantom!

Nevertheless, the material shot with this lens was highly appreciated by representatives of Microsoft, which only confirms that it is important how to photograph, and the means is already secondary. I will ask again how there are comments on https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/09/hard-to-find-lens/, do they make you think about something?

  • Glory

    Good day to all.
According to the TTX, a small error in the optical scheme (in five groups).
Yes, this lens has very hidden features in a small format. Here I am finishing making a lens hood for him (the native one works only on medium format) and the nature!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for finding the error. Corrected.

  • aidyn

    Arkady, good evening
which of the two would you choose for yourself
    Review Mir-38B 3,5 / 65 or Review MC Volna-3 2.8 / 80

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would choose the Wave, since it is better to get a portrait from it.

  • Sergei

    All of health!
Many thanks to the AUTHOR for publications from a amateur photographer with forty years of experience!
About this lens. I got it with a folded back. It's a pity, the glass is in fair condition. The previous owner, when unscrewing the hood together with the light filter, “accidentally” did this.
I can not find in the internet a "manual" for disassembling, repairing this glass. Maybe someone has such experience? Or "manual"?
Sometimes I use “Vega 12B” glass in a “Canon EOS 600D” bundle through “P6 / EOS” - without a “chip”. Catching a blind focus is almost impossible. I want to find drawings of such an adapter, i.e. - “P6 / M42”, because there are several programmable “EOS / M42”!
    Thank you.

    • ba3lur

... personally, I use the life view mode for precise focusing, which I advise you

  • Andrei

It is very difficult to catch the focus, a very heavy portraiture is obtained on the crop, compared with the industrial with zenith, it loses in contrast and sharpness.

  • Sergei

    Hello.
Tell knowledgeable people. I have written MIR-38B on this lens, why in Latin letters? Its serial number is 803355, maybe this is related to the Olympics?

  • Serge

The Latin alphabet is most likely ... Export

  • barguz

Arkady, good day! acquired a world 38v-830445 release number. if it is important. could not find an adapter for canon 40d. Roughly speaking, a piece of pipe tightly to the lens, then the M42 thread and the plus adapter M42 ea Canon. Here are the numbers in mm I need. Tell them please!

  • Oleg

I wonder which one is better: Mir-38, Mir-3 (black) or Mir-3 (zebra)? Maybe someone had the opportunity to compare.

  • theunk1nd

I bought my own with a jamb - being installed on the cues, I refused to close the diaphragm. The seller therefore cut the price in half. As a result, I threw out the diaphragm pusher - and everything plows)

  • Aleksander

theunk1nd is on which pusher deleted ??? world38 or wave3 ??? I have a problem with the diaphragm on the Wave :(

  • Alexander

When processing photos. What correction profile should I put in Lightroom? rent a camera? CANON 650D

  • Alexander

What is the focal length of a digital camera?

    • Arkady Shapoval

65mm, the focal length is independent of the camera. The EGF on the crop will be 65 * The crop coefficient.

  • Alexander

Why is Helios 44 cheaper than this world, but better in picture quality?

    • Lynx

      That's life!

  • Marina

Tell me please, but on Mir-38V 3,5 / 65, the adapter to the Nikon camera, what should it be? thanks!

    • Andrey Vyunenko

      quite rare-KP-88 / N. I’m looking for it myself.

      • zengarden

There are Chinese counterparts, but they are worse than Soviet ones (there may not be infinity, for example).

        • Andrey Vyunenko

And for the price, very, very expensive ...

  • anonym

Hello everyone. I read and am amazed a lot !!! Not long ago acquired a praktisch + lens primär 3.5 / 80. So what am I doing? Works with a bang although already 50+.

  • anonym

    Praktisix.

  • anonym

The emblem of the Arsenal plant, but produced by the Vegv plant in Uman.

  • Sergei

all the lenses on the digit do not work on the street, only at the fully open aperture; in other cases, a white spot is overexposed in the middle of the frame. everyone is silent for some reason about this why the question. when shooting in studio everything is fine on any aperture. All test shots are taken on the open aperture and you take 11 or 8 and get a white spot. Canon 5 d lenses world 38 b. wave 3. vega 12 b Helios 44m 4. Helios 44 2. Ruby 1. Facets 11. Helios 40 2. Carl Zeiss 50 and 180. All of them give a white spot the more you close the diaphragm.

    • Vladimir

My Helios-44-4 on Canon 50d does not give any spot on any aperture ...

      • Alexander

The answer may be simple - the accuracy of the adapter for M42 from a colleague does not meet the requirements. Now I have done a simple experiment, Pentax kr, Helios44, if you rotate the latter literally by a third or a half of a turn, the exposure changes, the picture becomes brighter, especially in the center.

  • Sergei

can someone tell me the reason

    • Jury

      Shiny aperture blades

      • Sergei

and with the flash no problem with any aperture

        • anonym

Perhaps all the lenses were sorted out and blurred, let's say, using a single, incorrect technology. I had this on Mir-1V. On Mir, there is an “inner hood” behind the front lens, so there was a stain of oil on it. Any hint of bright background light produced a blemish spot. After rubbing this hood with alcohol, the “effect” disappeared.

  • a piece of chalk

caught the world 38B but the mount B itself

  • broken lens

Hi I'm from Australia. I have a cue 88 and a Mir 38B 3,5 / 65. I just broke my lens and I need help to fix it. I have bent the focal length and aperture settings I guess and I can’t screw the lens glass back into the lens port ... please if you have any information if the english is even better like a YouTube video ... thanks for your time!

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, you published two reviews about similar lenses (65mm focal length), your reviews are about the same. And yet tell me what would you prefer more MIR-3 or MIR-38 ?? It seems that the second lens seems to be a continuation of the first, so it should be something better or what?
