Canon 350D Digital Review

Canon 350D - was released back in 2005, soon this camera will be 10 years old, but it continues to delight with its work.

First, the Canon 350D is an amateur DSLR camera with an APS-C sensor with crop factor 1.6X. Canon 350D can use Canon EF (full frame), Canon EF-S (cropped) lenses. This review looks directly at the camera itself. Canon 350D body (without lens).

The camera is very easy to use, I did not find any complicated settings or complicated tricks of use in it. There are 32 settings in the camera menu, which are divided into 5 points. It’s very easy to understand.

The most important thing about the Canon 350D

  1. Canon 350D has a CMOS sensor on 8 megapixel. Even today, 8MP is enough for any photography enthusiast. With 8MP you can print photos without problems up to A3 size. Personally, I rarely print larger format photos. I think my article on the topic will be useful Battle of Megapixels. I do not recommend chasing megapixels unnecessarily.

  2. Canon 350D has the ability to shoot on ISO 100 - 1600, without the possibility of expanding the range. In fact, the matrix is quite old and noisy compared to modern cameras that can squeeze ISO 12. In any case, working as a photographer, I rarely need an ISO above 800. The camera in working in low light is very morally outdated.

  3. Canon 350D supports fast cards CF. My Canon 350D easily digests CF in the 32GB Trancend 400x, however, only 8 GB is available. CF have a huge speed of writing and reading photos and therefore help the camera quickly release the buffer.

  4. Focusing system includes 7 points. 7 points is enough for most tasks. I could not check the quality of the focusing system, since I used the Canon 350D exclusively with manual lenses, such as Canon Lens FD 55mm f / 1.2 SSC и Porst Color 50mm F1.6.

    Canon 350D sample photo

  5. The camera body is made of plastic, part of the inside of the camera is made of an alloy of metals. In general, the camera sits well in the hand and there is no doubt about the quality of its manufacture.

  6. Canon 350D has nice ergonomics - nothing more, the camera has quick access to the main settings: ISO, WB, metering method exposure, focus method, correction exposure, shooting method. The camera has one multi selector and one control wheel.

  7. The downside to the 2012 Canon 350D is very small display. It is extremely difficult to view the captured material on the display, therefore, I recommend watching the captured photos on a computer monitor.
  8. But the Canon 350D has optional monochrome display, which displays all the basic shooting information. True, I did not understand the peculiarity that when you change one of the shooting parameters, for example, ISO, the main display lights up, on which you need to select the desired value. It would be better if everything could be done with the help of an additional monochrome display.

  9. Canon 350D has a built-in flash, however, the flash does not have manual power control, which is sometimes very necessary
  10. The Canon 350D's viewfinder is small and adjustable. It seemed to me that the viewfinder is even smaller than even my baby Nikon D40. The viewfinder is made using pentzer mirrors.

  11. Speed of work. The camera can shoot at a speed up to 3 fps. In fact, it shoots at a maximum speed of 2.8 fps. This is not much, but quite enough for basic purposes. I do not recommend chasing fast-firing cameras without unnecessary need. The buffer in RAW mode when using the Battery Grip booster BG-E3 has the ability to store: 5 pictures in RAW mode, 4 pictures in RAW + JPEG mode and 9 pictures in JPEG mode. When working with a conventional battery, the buffer can hold as many as 14 JPEG files. This is a good indicator. RAW file weighs from 6 to 13MB. RAW has no compression settings, and RAW + JPEG only works in RAW + JPEG mode L.

  12. The minimum flash sync speed is 1 \ 200s. No high speed sync.
  13. A lot of little things: picture management modes, bracketing exposure, work from the remote control, USB 2.0, video output, automatic shutdown.

Sample photos on the Canon 350D

Radozhiva usually focuses on sample photos without processing. You can find such photos on the Canon 350D in Canon Lens FD 55mm f / 1.2 SSC review и XM F Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm UMC. In the gallery below, all photos with processing. When processing RAW using Adobe Lighroom, I noticed that even at ISO 100 with easy correction exposure noise appears. When sharpening, the photo becomes very rough. Most likely, I just do not know how to work correctly with CR2 RAW from Canon.

Personal experience

In general, the parameters are parameters, and 8MP is really enough in order not to be constrained in photography, processing, etc. I liked the camera - nothing more, at least for the photographer's survival. Of course, nowadays ISO capabilities are very scarce, but at ISO 100-400 the camera produces quite acceptable results. Here sample photo without processing at ISO 1600. Color reproduction is not bad, the work of automatic white balance quite copes with its tasks. Sorry, the display is very small. I used the camera with the Battery Grip BG-E3 booster. This booster has a button on / off buttons on it. Very convenient to use, requires 6 AA batteries, did not want to work with my Ni-MH batteries. I wanted to take a Canon 350D earlier for writing reviews of manual optics for M42 threads, as this is a great option for little money.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions:

Canon 350D is a good old hobby camera. For people shooting at low ISOs and viewing the footage on a computer, this can be an excellent CDC for little money.

In December 2012 I sold my 350D and bought a 60D. The purchase of the new camera was driven by a strong desire to have a “live view” for using old non-autofocus lenses, and unlike the XXXD line, the 60D had a noticeably larger viewfinder. Despite the extremely pronounced advantages from the "upgrade", I noticed that 60D is much more likely to "make mistakes" with the white balance. :)

    • Misha

That is, in December 2011, of course :)

  • dmitri

Thank you for the review, I have been waiting for the Canon review for a long time, I myself use the Canon 350d, an excellent camera. The only thing I would like to correct you is, you made a mistake with the year of release in 2003 came the canon 300d, and in 2005 the Canon 350d, so that he is still far from ten years old, but I think it will survive)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

I fixed the year, I apologize.

  • Deimos

Yes, you made a very necessary extension of the site by adding an overview of this boot and lens.

  • Arkady Shapoval

    Okay, 350 is a good camera, and 55 1.2 is a great lens :)

    • Deimos

Yes, not just many call, Canon's "boots"

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

in 2006 chose his first DSLR between him and the Nikon D70S. Canon was not available and the choice fell on Nikon. I only regret that I didn’t buy a fifty dollars then. so many beautiful shots could be taken!
the controls on the canon are more toy, the body is undignified. Nikon looks more serious. the controls are more "mature". The CCD sensor gives a very warm picture. although the resolution of 6MP is not enough. and it makes a decent noise. here is a photo from cmos on my d90 is less pleasant, more like a video frame.

    • Yuriy75

The most important thing in photography is that the camera looks solid, and the face is smart and slightly mysterious.

  • anonym

Of course, you can give any nicknames to any technique, but I noticed that the modern slang of photographers is full of arrogance and disdain for photographic equipment, it seems that for most it really is like boots: reviled and thrown away. And meanwhile, an incredible lot of intellect, labor of thousands of people, knowledge and experience of generations of scientists, engineers, inventors, workers ... and all this in order to deserve a biting nickname like "boot" is invested in all these things ??? Isn't it a shame, gentlemen ?! And do not justify your own pride and ignorance, lack of intelligence by new living conditions and other junk !!!

    • Deimos

Canon`s called boots exclusively by the similarity of writing, take a closer look, I did not carry any dismissive meaning to this device.

    • Andrei

) Do not take to heart!

  • Alexey

More canons, good and different! Now, I hope there will be more reviews of optics for this system. Arkady, thanks for the review. By the way, on my 450D row the files are also noisy. Or hands are crooked, or Lightrum needs to be configured. In my case, most likely the first.

  • Igor

I can give a test for Canon 450D with Auto-focus portrait lens with high brightness.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Let's. My contacts are not difficult to find.

  • Julia

Arkady, I have the following problem: I’m shooting at 350D with good daytime street lighting (iso 100, RAW). I open it in Camera Raw with a 100% file increase and watch spooky grains in the photo! Is this the way it should be? I was also very surprised that in RAW the file weighs 7-8 mb, no more. Please help me figure it out.

    • Arkady Shapoval

7-8MB should be. Grain on ISO 100 may be, but not strong.

  • Julia

http://floomby.ru/s1/95mjw/full/ cut out a piece of the photo) look, if not difficult. This is at a 100% increase. The file has already been processed and translated into jpg. Sharpness did not increase. The RAW is exactly the same noise.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it makes noise in the shadows. Look at my examples of photos, they also make noise, even at ISO 100.

  • Julia

I looked. Yes, exactly the same grain is just ... When shooting in Jpg, I somehow did not notice such grain, but in RAW it is very noticeable ... Eh ...

As I understand it, it will be noticeable if they want to print a photo on A4, I’m not talking about A3 at all ... (

    • Arkady Shapoval

On prints of 20 to 30 is not very noticeable, it can even be a plus.

  • Julia

    Thanks for the help, Arkady!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Not at all.

  • Yuriy

350D percha my DSLR compact. Having bought a gun in a used station, I’m not sorry. From the first moments of the video, the video is drawn at high ISO. I’m grateful for 800, and even for compact (Сanon PowerShot SX110) more than 200 knowledge of bullets even earlier. Although I want more and more, I know no more than 200. Since the compact is not big, the camera is far from new and even morally old. It’s a miserable, shchoing hour and I didn’t buy it earlier.

  • Alex

Tell me please. offer to buy 350D (2006 release, in good condition) for 2000 UAH. he is worth the money, is it worth buying? (needed for family, amateur shooting)

    • Arkady Shapoval

If without a lens, then 2000 UAH is expensive.

  • Anna

Hello, sorry for the off. Advise that it is better to buy a child 12 years old, Nikon d40 kit lens used for 1600 g or Canon 350D used for 1200 g? Now she has Fuji fine pix f30. She also manages with this soap dish to shoot, but I want to interest the child and expand opportunities. Thank you in advance.

    • anonym

take canon, it has a shorter working distance, you can inexpensively expand the optics park.

  • jorson

I bought 350D a month and a half ago as my first DSLR. After the soap dish - a fairy tale, I can't get enough of it! :) A Canon EF 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 II US lens came with the carcass, but it is not clear, without a stub and I lack wide-angle. I want to change it to Canon EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS kit. Arkady, tell me, is it worth it? Is there a difference between Japanese and Taiwanese? And what other inexpensive everyday lenses are there for the budding photographer? Thanks!

    • anonym

buy a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM, it's inexpensive, and the picture quality is awesome.

  • Anatoly

bought for 2000 UAH. as I understand it with a standard objective as they say .. I'm studying ... I'm like a specific teapot .. who thread will tell you options for other objectives for this fotik as training options for obtaining frames

    • Boris

Sigma 18-200 or 18-250, inexpensive fixes 30 or 50 mm

  • NikitosZs

I have this camera. Horizontal light streaks in dark frames began to appear on the photos. On any iso. They spoil the picture very much, can you tell me what can be done?
By the way, with manual optics, metering works much better in aperture priority mode. There are no overexposures. And in missile defense, there are always overexposures. Do not tell me why?

  • Boris

The second life of the Canon EOS 350D (alternative firmware CHDK)
    http://yelagin.livejournal.com/117358.html

  • Sasha

I have one question that is very troubling. I have canon 350D in use, I shot everything fine, but after diligent shooting, and not only I used it, I noticed that when installed on the lens with a focal length below 30, the camera gives Error 99 (native lens 18-55), an error is written in the manual when using a non-native lens. Who can tell - this is a breakdown in the lens, camera, or any settings have been changed. Who can tell me please and if you can give an answer to sashalyz@meta.ua For earlier grateful.

    • Denis

If the error pops up at certain focal lengths, the train in the lens is broken. On some of the focal points, it doesn't work on others.

    • Dmitriy

I had the same problem. sometimes the error error 99 popped up on Canon 350d with his native Kitovsky 18 55. he could not understand what was the matter. I thought the shutter was closing (but somehow taking off the canon 550d put another lens 18 55 with 350d on another DSLR. And again an error appeared, only a different number. I decided to disassemble this lens. In the process of disassembling, I found a crack in the loop. It’s kind of pulled up. Now it removes normal for both 350 and 550.

  • Oleg S.

Installing the CHDK firmware extension allows you to use additional ISO 2000, 2500, 3200 on this camera. And still interval shooting!
I have been using this camera since 2006. There are no complaints about the camera. Only praise.

  • Karabas-Barabas

A good camera, especially for shooting leisurely objects with L optics and in good light.

  • Avdoshyn

I bought this unit a year ago and began to slowly master it in photography. 350 is a very good model and it suits me perfectly. He often shot on whale optics + Helios 44H (on crop it becomes a very good portrait portrait). There is only one nuance that does not suit me: I shoot in particular the cityscape at night, then I use long exposures. After fixing the shutter, the stopwatch is displayed on the monochrome display. And everything would be convenient, but after a few seconds the display backlight goes out and monitors the shooting time becomes difficult. Perhaps this is the only negative that I found in this camera. So I ordered a 70-300 macro sigma for him, and I hope that my hopes will be confirmed and this tandem will be very good.
