Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor full-frame lens capabilities

I decided to try on how much vignetting (black frame trim) will be noticeable when using the lens Nikon DX on camera Nikon fx. My hands fell Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor. The result was unpredictable.

When focusing at close ranges, the Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor gave a little vignetting at F / 1.8. When the aperture was closed at focusing distances close to MDF, the vignetting effect disappeared altogether. Roughly speaking, at close focusing distances, the Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor lens works well even on Nikon FX full-frame cameras. Performance margin pleases.

When focusing on long distances close to infinity, vignetting had the least power at F / 1.8 and increased when the aperture was closed to F / 22. The closer the focus ring was to infinity, the stronger the vignetting.

Also, I noticed that in the full frame, the Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor shows very strong distortion.

Below are sample photos on the Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor and the APS camera NIKON D700 FX FULL FRAME in FX snapshot mode ('FX image area' setting), all shot in JPEG, auto levels, downsized and data imprinted from EXIF. Pay attention to the nice bokeh pattern and the vignetting at different aperture and focus distance.

Conclusions:

Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8G DX Nikkor Lens can be used without the effect of black edges on full-frame cameras when focusing at distances close to MDF at any aperture value.

Help to the project. Thanks for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

    Tsіkaviy experiment
Nice and big bool to try this kind of experiment for kenon (for example 5d mark 2) on vikoristannyam about * camera for crop cameras (for example 18-55 / 3,5-5,6, it’s nice to have * a completely bayonet mount *)

    • Arkady Shapoval

The whale lens will give very strong black angles, but if you were to try a similar lens on the APS-H Canon, then most likely it could be used with a bang.

    • Misha

You can try, but not forgetting that when focusing 19-22mm the mirror will cling to the tail, and with 22mm - a very normal width. And the stable version of the whale is now very much even nothing.

  • Ivan

It's funny I thought that on a full frame, DX lenses will vignette more. I imagined a circle in a black rectangle, but in fact, nothing happens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I tried Tamron 17-50 at full frame, it turns out a dark rectangle, not a circle.

  • Ivan

Maybe here is the same marketing ploy as with the processors. Initially, they make one drawing, and then, those that are rejected for the full frame, marked as DX and successfully sold for crop?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I think not, this can be seen in the optical schemes, which are different for prop and fp.

  • Deimos

Very interesting. I expected more vignetting.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, tell me how to make the foreground and the background blurry (bokeh) and the middle was in focus, like in the second photo? Something is going badly with me. Nikon 3100, fifty-fifty lens.

  • Alexey

Thanks for the interesting reviews. I would like to see a review of the lens “BELOMO MC 2.8 / 17” is now produced for Canon, Nikon, Olympus ...

Arkady, thanks for the interesting articles!
I have a question for you, I found in Saratov 35-1,8 at a good price. It confuses the only moment, I began to check it on the front back focus, it goes back one unit. Maybe of course the light in the store is luminescent .. Do you think you can use it? Carcass D90. And further, in the future, can it be aligned?
The decision must be made today, while there is a reserve for it. The price tag is painfully good for the city.
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

They sometimes blur the focus, but this is not the back or the front, but just misses.

I can test my 35 1,8 on FX. Wonderful. I can be cautioned to see. Vіn'єtuvannya are present at all values of the aperture. Ale. At values up to 4 years old, it is wider and diffuse, and therefore the enemy is dumb. On the values from 4 to 22, the win'єtuvannya becomes a great ale hard, and a picture. Distortion in special cameras is corrected automatically and there is no problem. The perspective of the little ones on the FX was better suited to the DX. Wonderfully nikon is not new 35 mm for FX.
Surely, it is possible to back up a lot of photographs in no time to bring the wine to its own marks and to bring respect from the regions to the center.

  • anonym

Expected more vignetting. The resulting photos are similar to the photo FED 35A, it is also the way FF and 38mm lens;), though less aperture.

  • Yana

Super! Thanks for the examples! It would never have crossed my mind to fasten a 35 DX to a full-frame carcass!

  • Dmitriy

sometime in the early 90s I used Zenit-E and shot on slide film TsO50d (color, reversible sensitivity 50 units, for daylight) the lens was a "whale" Helios 44-2 (58/2) and when photographing nature in the sun in a bright summer day, I don’t remember what it was and how much it was exposed, but I remember that the branches of a tree nearby gave a frankly purple color instead of gray, I sinned on the expiration of the film ... how many years have passed, and this turns out to be vignetting ...

    • BB

Have you read the material at all?
What you have is chromatic, most likely - freezing.

  • Catherine

Hello. I understand correctly that if you used 35 1.8 dx per full frame, it does not cling to the mirror? And then I was somehow afraid ... And if the lens clings ... the camera stops working or what?

    • Arkady Shapoval

All Nikon auto focus lenses on all Nikon DSLRs do not catch anything.

      • Catherine

Thanks, reassured. I'm going to try. :-) And thanks for the site, I find a lot of useful things for you.

And the meaning of such perversions? 50 1.8G costs the same in the secondary market and without dancing with a tambourine

          • Lynx

because the girl wants moderate shirik on FF, not “normal”?

  • Ilya

What can you say about the test of speed and accuracy of focusing on the FF of this lens?
If you bet on the D750, will the accuracy increase?
Will there be problems with the focus speed?

At a distance of 10m - at F2.2 - 3.2. will distortion and vignette show up strongly?

    • Peter Sh.

It seems to me that there are very few who have decided to deal with such nonsense.
FF lenses are installed on the D750, otherwise why buy it?

      • Ilya

        I'll have to do it.

        • Alexey

Well, how did it happen? also 750 and the remaining 35 from the crop. or changed to ff lens?

          • First_Substation

Not a little, but for example, if anyone has a film player like f75 (I), then information about 35ki will be very interesting. Thanks to Arkady for this article.

on Nikon, the D750 unfortunately does not work, the camera does not see the lens

It works great on the d750, a light vignette, as indicated in the article, but otherwise everything is fine!

      • anonym

for some reason my instance doesn’t see what could be the reason?)

        • Michael

In the instance, not working is visible

        • Timur

On my D750 35, this one also works fine. True, I do not use it, but the fact that I confirm the problem with your copy. the problem in theory may be with the contact group (oily) I had this. rubbed with alcohol, everything began to work as usual. Still, the cable inside the lens could be damaged.

  • anonym

If I understand correctly: after cropping the darkest angles along the viewing angle, is the image equivalent to a 40 mm lens?

  • anonym

    Or closer to 50mm?

  • Dmitriy

    Good afternoon, Arkady.
The question arose about using dx lenses on fx cameras. In crop mode, the dynamic range is not reduced? That is, in terms of noise, the picture is the same as with the entire matrix, but less in resolution and viewing angle?

    • Michael

Yes. Just "cutting" the central part
