Nikon D700 review

The Nikon D700 is a full format Nikon FX camera and is Nikon's second full format DSLR camera. The camera was introduced in the summer of 2007 and is now the cheapest full frame from Nikon (unless, of course, film cameras) Most photographers attribute the Nikon D700 to reportage cameras.

Legendary Nikon D700 with MB-D10 booster and Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII) lens

Legendary Nikon D700 with booster MB-D10 and lens Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII)

I have been using Nikon D700 for a little over 3 years, during which time I have changed several of these cameras.

Nikon D700 is a professional camera, it has no automatic modes shooting. This camera is designed for people who know the basic skills of working with photographic equipment and for whom it will not be difficult to work in semi-automatic or manual modes P, A, S, M.

Nikon D700 - heavy, dustproof and waterproof chamber with uncompromising metal alloy housing. But trouble, trouble, over time, the gum on the handle and throughout the camera body swell, peel off, and badly spoil the nerves. In addition, the lateral rubber plug for different connectors after swelling of the rubber does not want to close and constantly hangs. On my last Nikon D700, I just cut off this stub. Hanging gum and dummy plugs for PC-sync under studio light and contacts for the remote control. You can replace the rubber bands in the service center, but they take a lot of money for this pleasure, and the rubber bands come from China for quite a long time.

My Nikon D700 cameras are badly worn out from fighting, which is why metal began to appear under their black paint. Due to its heavy weight, the Nikon D700 distributes weight well with heavy lenses like the 70-200 / 2.8. It is best to use a Nikon D700 with a battery grip.

We accelerate the Nikon D700 to the cherished 8 fps

In normal mode, the Nikon D700 can shoot at a speed of 5 fps (with any image quality settings, color depth and compression level RAW) Using battery pack MB-D10 or network adapter EH-5a / EH-5, the speed can grow up to 8 fps. But, to make the camera shoot at a speed of 8 fps, one MB-D10 not enough. You need to use a special holder MS-D10 with 8 AA cells (batteries or rechargeable batteries). The MS-D10 holder is supplied with MB-D10. Also, 8 fps can be achieved using a more capacious battery. EN-EL4 (from cameras Nikon D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs) Or EN-EL4a (from cameras Nikon D3s, D3, D3x), but this requires the optional BL-3 cover (which is not included with the MB-D10). In addition, if you buy a battery EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a, you will have to additionally buy and charge Nikon MH-21 / Nikon MH-22 for it. If in MB-D10 use a regular standard battery EN-EL3e, then the burst speed will not change. Battery pack MB-D10 equally suitable for D300, D300S and D700.

Recently, I have been using Nikon D700 with a booster MB-D10 and one EN-EL3e battery. I want to note that the booster (battery pack / portrait grip) MB-D10 performed not logically. Only one battery is inserted into the booster, the second is inserted into the battery compartment of the camera itself. As a result, to use the camera with two batteries, you need to remove the booster from the camera, insert the battery into it and reinstall the booster. I think this method is stupid, impractical and in general, after the bustare from Nikon D200, such illogical behavior is just a mockery of the photographer.

Unpleasant feature of batteries No. 1

At low temperatures (not necessarily freezing), the camera does not fully release the shutter, and an error message 'Err' appears on the display. To resume camera functionality, just press the shutter button again, after which it will perform a full cycle and you can continue shooting. This behavior in cold weather is most likely due to a drop in battery capacity, which is not enough power for a full shutter release cycle. The repairmen say that diaphragm drummer absorbs a lot of energy and this problem can be observed with many Nikon cameras. This feature is also observed when working with a booster. In any case, in cameras of this level I would like not to encounter such unpleasant features. I get around this shortcoming with 'warmed up' batteries, of which I have 6 spare pieces.

Unpleasant feature of batteries No. 2

When using non-native (Chinese counterparts) batteries with a battery pack, the camera often reports that the battery is completely discharged. At the same time, if you install it in the main battery slot, which is located in the camera, then everything will work fine.

Trouble number 3

With the active use of external flashes, the hot shoe of the Nikon D700 camera breaks, after which the flash begins to behave similarly poltergeist. Even if you put the camera on a table or a tripod, install any flash, for example, the native Nikon SB-910, the flash can turn on any of its functions on its own. Usually a malfunction manifests itself in the fact that the camera stops “seeing” the flash, or blocks the shutter release, the flash can spontaneously give any number of pulses of any power (you can burn your eyes), the flash focusing grid is activated, etc. If you move the flash in the hot shoe a little, the problem goes away for a few seconds. Clamping the metal contacts of the hot shoe only solves the problem for a while. It is treated by replacing the shoe.

The camera has a great small monochrome displayon which all the basic settings are available. I write small because, compared to Nikon D200, D300, D300s the monochrome display has decreased, since the Nikon D700 uses a large pentaprism, which pushed and reduced the secondary display. The monochrome display has a pleasant green backlight, which is turned on using the camera's power lever. The monochrome display saves battery power and simplifies camera setup and shooting.

The main display of the Nikon D700 at 920.000 points, the same as that of the cameras Nikon D90, D300, D300s, D7000, D3, D3s, D3x. The display is nice and has a protective cover that I never take off. You can adjust the brightness of the display for yourself.

Nikon D700 uses big and fast cards CF. My Nikon D700 works with a 32GB 400x card without any problems.
Nikon D700 is not big at all frame buffer. Depending on the type and format of the image, the buffer can hold a maximum 18 RAW shots (at conventional compression, 12 bit RAW), 15 shots of Tiff, 24JPEG L FINE (size priority). I almost never saw information in reviews about the fact that some functions reduce the number of frames in the buffer. Because, attention: if you enable ADL, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds and high ISOs, frame buffer reduced to 6 shots - this is a very, very bad indicator. But, even if you take the maximum - 18 RAW files with disabled additional settings to improve images, this is 3 frames less than in the ancient professional Nikon D200.

Given that the maximum shooting speed is 8 fps, with the Nikon D700 you can shoot series no longer than 3 seconds. So, the Nikon D700 is not quite suitable for serious reporting. Frame buffer - one of the main indicators of camera performance and speed. Well, if it is very important to shoot in series in RAW, then in DX mode the buffer can hold as much as 26 frames (with normal compression and 12-bit color depth).

Nikon D700 camera has everything 12.1 effective megapixels... This is small enough for a full frame camera. A small number of megapixels increases the diffraction threshold. CMOS sensor type, Nikon D700 is the first full frame matrix from Nikon, because it is not the most ideal. In a number of characteristics, the D700 is inferior even to amateur cameras. Nikon D7000, D5100... Full frame is not a panacea for image quality. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, for more details in my article Battle of Megapixels.

Nikon D700 has built-in focus motorthat allows you to automatically focus with AF optics, for example, with  Nikon 50mm F1.8DNikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor and other AF lenses.
For measuring exposure thrown out 3D Color Matrix Metering II with 1005 zones. The camera works wonderfully even with old AI-S, Pre-ai lenses. In principle, froze exposure available and tin can instead of lens, and even without a lens at all. The camera can memorize 10 manual lenses. I love to use Nikon D700 with Soviet lenses, since the camera has an electronic rangefinder (arrows near the green dot, which suggest which direction to rotate the focus ring on manual lenses).

Full-length portrait on Nikon D700

Full-length portrait on Nikon D700

At the camera 51 focus points, 15 of which are cruciform. After using the camera for a long time, I do not feel the difference between cross-shaped and regular focus points at all. A serious focusing drawback is the fact that all points are placed only on the DX area of the camera - you cannot focus at the edges of the frame. Focus module MultiCAM 3500FX use older cameras Nikon D3, D3s, D3x.

The camera has a main ISO range from 200 to 6400 and an expanded from 100 (1) to 25.600 (hi 2). It's a shame that the Nikon D700 does not have a true ISO 100. The shortest excerpt the camera is 1 \ 8000c. Funny but one of the first Nikon D1h could shoot at 1 \ 16.000. Short excerpt and minimum ISO are very important when using fast lenses.

Nikon D700 can control flash according to the protocol Nikon CLS. Funny but before the release Nikon D800 (D800E) The XNUMX was the only full-frame camera with built-in flash. Yes, that's right, in Nikon D3, D3s, D3x, D4, D4s, Df there is no flash at all, therefore, the SU-800 module is recommended for flagship cameras. You can read how to control flashes in the section about Nikon CLS. Many do not respect the built-in flash frog, but in skillful hands it turns into an ideal flash synchronization device. Of course, the Nikon D700 has fast flash synchronization and can shoot in FP mode with flash for at least 1/8000 s, in more detail in the section on flash in the afternoon.

The battery on the camera is quite powerful, without a flash it easily fulfills 1000-1500 shots. The battery is completely identical to Nikon D80, D90, D200, D300, D300s and compatible with D100, D70, D70s, D50 (but not vice versa).

Nikon D700 behaves well in the studio

Nikon D700 behaves well in the studio

A thousand and one useful things: bracketing, control HA in JPEG, vignetting control, virtual horizon, Live View, viewing depth of field, multiple exposure, matrix cleaning, interval shooting, etc. If you have questions about small things, write in the comments, I will try to answer quickly.

If you take the matrix and the stuffing from the flagship camera Nikon D3, and shove it into the case from Nikon D300 (Nikon D300s), we get the Nikon D700.

With Nikon D700 and a cheap fifty dollars, you can squeeze a lot

With Nikon D700 and a cheap fifty dollars, you can squeeze a lot

About Nikon D700 and Nikon D3, I highlight the main differences in bold.

  1. Different level... Nikon D700 is professional and Nikon D3 - flagship professional camera. In any case, Nikon D3 is positioned for a different circle of photographers.
  2. Different body. And therefore, Nikon D3 has better ergonomics of management, more capacious battery.
  3. Nikon D700 has dust cleaning matrixand the Nikon D3 doesn't have one.
  4. Nikon D700 takes off 1 f slowerthan Nikon D3
  5. Nikon D700 has another pentaprism with less coverage, covering only 95% of the picture.
  6. Nikon D700 only one slot for memory cardsThe Nikon D3 has two. Professionals value this feature in the Nikon D3 very highly.
  7. Funny but Nikon D3 does not have a built-in flash, and the Nikon D700 has, from here comes up a whole series of Nikon D700 work options with Nikon CLS with groups of flashes. I really appreciate this feature.
  8. Different shutter. Nikon D700 will last two times less than Nikon D3
  9. Various little things in the menu settings, etc.

Speaking on the case, I did not use Nikon D3, but, given that the cameras have the same matrix and the same focusing system, the image quality and functionality are very close. Now both cameras are outdated, as Nikon D3s, D4, D4s, D5 are much better than these two old ladies.

I note that Nikon D600 and Nikon D700 - these are cameras of different levels, despite the fact that the D700 is much older Nikon D600, but still its 'charm' is noticeably better than the 600. In choise Nikon D800, D700, D600 I would adhere to this sequence, leaving the budget: Nikon D810 -> Nikon D800E -> Nikon D800 -> Nikon D750 -> Nikon DF -> Nikon D610 -> Nikon D600 -> Nikon D700. Nikon 810a will be chosen only by experts in their field.

Interesting options for setting up and managing the Nikon D700:

  1. You can set the center selector button to view captured images at a specific magnification. Roughly speaking, when viewing a picture, with one press of the central button of the selector (joystick), you can get an increase in any area of the picture. This is very useful for checking sharpness. Moreover, the increase is done at the focus point (or group of points), according to which the picture was taken.
  2. I adjust the FN button for auto ISO controls. This is not so easy to do, which is the strong minus of the camera. To do this, add the item “Auto. management feels. ISO ”, and in the function key programming menu select“ Call. top. item MY MENU ”. The button is configured via the “INFO” menu.
  3. I program the preview button to select the manual lens. Moreover, it is very inconvenient that you can only select the lens number with the specified parameters. On my Nikon D200 with this setting, it was also possible to change the parameters of the lens, which is very useful when using lenses with manual aperture controls and zoom lenses. The button is configured via the “INFO” menu.
  4. I program the AE-L / AF-L button for the 'Live View' mode, after which the Live View mode becomes more familiar for the convenience of switching on, for example, as on Nikon D90. By the way Auto focus in Live View is only available in AF-S mode and only with the AF-ON button and only when 'tripod' mode is selected.
  5. I turn off the audible focus alert, which greatly disturbs and annoys some people when shooting, for example in церкви.
  6. In the playback menu, you can configure the camera so that the focus points that participated in focusing (on which the subject was focused) are displayed in the image when viewing images. This is done through the "Display Mode" submenu.
  7. Focus mode AF-C set to shutter priority, and AF-S to focus priority. You can find useful information on working with these modes here.
  8. All other settings (and previous ones too) can be customized to taste and needs. Do not forget that the Nikon D700 has several banks of settings that you can save and change. More details about this here.

Personal experience:

Nikon D700 is a very good camera. I work as a photographer and really appreciate her 51 point focus, quick response. It's funny, but all 51 focus points are in the DX area of the image, it seems that the Nikon D700 is not Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FXand Nikon Multi-CAM 3500DX from Nikon D300 (details here) Also, exposure meters Nikon D700 is afraid of flare. For example, when shooting in a church, if a small light source in the form of a candle enters the frame, matrix and centrally weighted measurements take a strongly underexposed frame. The dynamic range of the camera is small, Nikon D7000 it is much higher, but do not blame the old Nikon D700, because it is the first full frame matrix from Nikon. Also, the Nikon D700 is one of the few cameras that has a useful Live View mode and at the same time does not need to overpay for the video function. When viewing an image in Live View, it is very slow. For example, Live View at Nikon D90 much better "understands", especially when enlarging an area of the image. Often, Nikon D700 is the first FF camera for photographers, and whether it's worth switching to full frame at all - everyone must decide for himself, perhaps my article will help with this. 'Crop identification'. Regarding the matrix noise: yes, Nikon D700 bypasses any Nikon DX camera in terms of noise, there is nowhere to hide the cat in the bag. Regarding the recommendation of lenses for use: it all depends on the needs and tasks of the photographer.

D700 and skinton

Some do not like the way the camera conveys skin color (skin tone). Indeed, sometimes you can seriously complain about this. But for the Nikon D700 (and also for Nikon D300, D300s, D3, D3s and D3x) there is one unusual solution - to shoot in RAW, which then needs to be 'developed' using Nikon ViewNX (Nikon ViewNX-I) or CaptureNX (CaptureNX-D), while making sure to select Picture Control (Picture Control Mode) 'M1 D2Xmode1 ', or 'M2 D2Xmode2', 'M3 D2Xmode3' to your liking. These are special picture management sets that mimic the operation of cameras. Nikon D2x и D2xs... Try it, the result is sometimes very, very pleasantly surprised. So, the 'M1 D2Xmode1' is best for portrait photography.

For those who do not want to bother with RAW files: these same image management modes can be installed right into the camera by downloading them on the official website here to register:.

On the net you can find the same profiles for Lighroom and ACR ( link), after which working with RAW files can turn into a pleasure. Also, I advise you to look into my note about RAW converters.

Live, die and live again!

A little addition: after 150.000 shots at one of the weddings, I refused camera mirror... The cause of the breakdown - the mirror lever broke, the repair at the official service center in Kiev took over 1 month and stood at around $ 650, as they explained, in the D700 all the mirror, shutter and diaphragm mechanisms are connected, so the entire front mirror bay had to be changed ... After the repair, the frame counter showed 10 pictures.

Mirror sticking

Another small addition: I got another Nikon D700 camera, I bought it second-hand with a range of about 10.000 frames. At 330.000 frames, problems started with mirror sticking.

Nikon D700 - Nikon's most affordable full-frame digital SLR camera.

I do not recommend to beginners - it is heavy and requires an understanding of photography techniques.

I do not recommend to professionals - the potential of other full-size cameras will last for many years to come.

Elder Nikon D700 is interesting only for the price and full frame. I recommend Nikon D700 for upgrade after old DX cameras as budget option FX camera.

Nikon D700 is a long-running legend.

Nikon D700 is one of Nikon's most balanced cameras. Until now (in the summer of 2016) there is no full replacement for her. Nikon D750 - not at all. It is Nikon D700, not Nikon D300, that can be considered a reduced copy of the TOP Nikon D3.

Good day. You can tell where in Kiev the eccentric D700 can be changed. Services take 2000-2500UAH, somehow expensive, as for me. Maybe there is someone contact?

Now over at the OLH (08.11.2018/700/20) they sell several D23s with mileage up to 25k at a price of XNUMX-XNUMX thousand hryvnias. Tin.

Is it possible to "twist" the mileage of the cameras?
This is not a car ..
Or do you just admit that you can twist?

        • Michael

You can, the procedure from the car is not much different

          • Pokemon

I really like when they confidently say that you can twist.
But if you say "A", then you say "B".
In the sense that at home this is impossible, but only in the service, and it seems that not all cameras have it.
If you know how to twist at home - write. We will read it with interest.

            • Pawel

If I am not mistaken, a certain utility utility walked around the network, which has the ability to remap pixels, adjust af and reset mileage. But this is not accurate) By the way, an interesting observation is that in Russia this Camera is usually sold more expensive than the D600, so this is not the cheapest full frame.

              • lawyer

unkilled for 38-40t are sold .. but d600 cheaper than 40t did not see

            • Alexey

The service program is called Nikon DXXXX Inspection & Adjustment program. With the help of this program, you can do whatever you want with the camera, change the mileage as well. I changed the mileage personally when I bought a camera with a declared mileage of 30k and in fact it turned out to be under 200k and dropped it back to see the real mileage for myself.
ON NIKON'S REQUIREMENT, this program is everywhere deleted, but on the Internet, if you wish, you can find an archive with this program on all cameras
here is a link to adjust the focus on the D90 this program http://www.videomax.ru/forum/nikon_topic60157_page1&SID=146662-9ezbbfe9a57b642a84f642535,9172916667.html

    Hello !
how will the 700-24 VR lens work on the d85 ??? ... otherwise on the d7000 it is inferior in sharpness to the standard 18-105

how will the 700-24 VR lens work on the d85 ??? ... and then on the d7000 it is inferior in sharpness to the regular 18-105

  • Anton

Alexey, please tell me how did you find out the real mileage on the d700? I think that if you reset the counter through the service utility, then ShowExif will also show the value that is set there! Or am I mistaken, and is there an opportunity to somehow find out the real run after twisting?

    • Alexey

If the run is twisted, I think about it no one will know, except for the twisted one. In my case, the seller simply “drowned”, twisted the mileage and in the settings -> Shooting mode menu -> Active folder, the folder number was 119, therefore it is about 200k photos
      Excerpt from the instructions:
By default, your Nikon Dxxx saves all your images in one folder, which it calls 100NDxxx. Folders have a storage limit of 9999 images; when this number is exceeded, the camera creates a new folder, assigning a name that indicates the folder number: 101NDxxx, 102NDxxx, etc.
I don’t argue, there are photographers who rename this folder to fit their needs, but I don’t think that that's all.

  • Anton

I want to add to the mileage account. Service program Nikon D700 Inspection & Adjustment program is designed to control firmware “A”, but firmware “B” is controlled by another service program, in which you can reset mileage, remap hot pixels, etc. , but this service utility, unfortunately, has never been freely available on our camera, as well as on cameras d3 and d300, I write "unfortunately" because there is no way to clean the matrix from hot pixels on my own, for example, I do it successfully and without much I did work on d40 and d200!
I’m all about the fact that an ordinary user does not have the opportunity to lose mileage on our camera, here either agree on a service, or I don’t know!

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

      > but this service utility, unfortunately, was never freely available on our camera, as well as on cameras d3 and d300

The mileage is changed by the program you just mentioned. But you can remove white pixels with another program called Shooting Image Inspection & Adjustment program. Dark pixels cannot be removed, you need special equipment. For whites, only the lens or mount cap.

            • Denis

Hello Arkady!) I’ll also tell you a little prehistory, so far I’ve been shooting a year. But I try to shoot a lot for the experience. A couple of weeks ago I just bought a d700 from my hands, with a range of 120t. Before that, there was a d90 and squeezed out everything that it could to the maximum, but wildly embarrassed noises even at small ISOs. I compared the d90 and the d700 I saw the very sharpness that I dreamed about, happiness knew no bounds. Friends scared that she took the old woman, but why do you need it, but there’s already 120t mileage. I was upset, although I bought from a guy whose own point of sale of Nikon equipment, according to him, his d700 caught up to 500t mileage. I was embarrassed by one in a couple of weeks, the shutter hangs, as I understand it from behind the buffer. I want to catch more movement for a photo shoot, but I can’t, three or four times without a descent, then a pause, people wait, not deftly. And I can’t take a picture. WHAT TO DO? I shoot 20-40 2.8 sigma on two lenses and a 50mm 1.8 fix cheap not Nikonovsky.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The buffer for the d700, even with all the additional settings, is quite roomy, obviously not 3-4 frames. Something is wrong here.

      • Marina

And if I have ADL noise suppression enabled, should it be enough for 6 frames without pauses?

        • Michael

          Yes

        • Michael

You have written in EVI the buffer capacity at the current settings

  • Sergei

Happy New Year Arkady and all photography lovers! I bought the D700 for the existing cropped cameras. There are Tamron 19-35, Nikons 37-70 / 2,8, 70-210 / 4, 105 / 2,5. Good lenses, but not universal ... I would like an inexpensive lens for the output. What would you recommend from 2x - Nikon 24-120 (MKI) or 28-105 (on eBay $ 100-120) or buy Nikon 28-80 here and don't worry anymore, I won't pull 24-85, photography is just a hobby … Thank you for your work.

    • Michael

24-120 MK1 many complaints about marriage

  • Sergei

    Ochepyatka, 35-70 / 2,8, I beg your pardon ...

    • Valery A.

Do you consider Tamron 28-75 / 2,8? I like it more than 28-80; -105. These two nikons I did not compare head to head, I would venture to say that they are similar (in the picture), 28-80 is light, inconspicuous - suitable for an exit. And they ask for it 2,5-3 tr.

  • Sergei

I have something like this Nikon 35-70 / 2,8D, 28-80 praise, I do not really like the aperture of 5,6 by 80 mm, although for the street the photo will go, but still 28-105 is more universal and 4,5 to 105 mm, I would like an opinion about him and 24-120 (MKI), which picture will be better at the output

    • Pokemon

Arkady spoke very well about 28-105 / 3.5-4.5D and took a lot of shots at him. Just in conjunction with the D700.
I also bought this lens inexpensively and I really like it.

  • Novel

I shoot on d700, this is my second camera after d3000 ... Very often, my auto focus in motion gets blurred, especially when I shoot people in an ice-hole. And so I love my Nikon very much. I think that's enough for me)

  • anonym

It makes sense to buy a d700 with a d300. D300 is a great device, so I liked that I bought the second one (I got a good price) Now I’m thinking. Will the large matrix on the d700 give a better picture than the d300?

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

At least the D700 will give working ISOs up to 3200 - and this is an extremely serious help, greater color depth and dynamic range.
Crop is more profitable when working in good lighting conditions with long-focus optics and macro photography.

      • 1ds_mk3

ISO 3200 on the D700 is not working WITHOUT the noise reduction function enabled.
Without noise reduction on ISO 2500 it is impossible to watch pictures.
With noise, yes. But after ISO 2000, the RAVs are faded. The whole picture begins to turn gray from 1600, for 2000 this is already noticeable. At 2500 the picture is friable, noisy and faded. Without noise, just a pipe. On D3, a little better, on D3s, 3200 workers.

        • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

          > It is impossible to look at pictures without noise reduction on ISO 2500.
DXO Labs, intent on making a noticeable noise on the D700 at 2300, looks at you in surprise.

          • 1ds_mk3

            Play further with dxo tests.
At 2500, the d700 is going on in 14-bit ravs without noise reduction.
            Dirty, loose, gray, noisy picture.
The D700 lost to dxo d3, which is not surprising, since the Japanese aren’t fools to shove the same thing as d3 into a cheaper camera.
In general, of course, it is strange that they evaluate the matrix of cameras.
Their watering can hang out somewhere below :-)
1Ds Mark III, Sony Alpha 850/900 (there is also an interesting situevina with matrices) in the dxo tests they lose for some reason to the matrix d700 / d3)) Well, what can I say ... But I will not do anything - the pictures on flickr from these cameras will speak for themselves.

            • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

              > for some reason they lose to the d700 / d3 matrix
Because they are very noticeably noisy, which every A850 / 900 owner is aware of, to which I also belong, bgggg.

              • 1Ds_mk3

Yes, but the color is different there.
The D700 has higher working ISO than all 1D / 1Ds (except for 1DX) and Sony A850 / 900, no one disputes this and the AF system, which allows you to shoot blacks in a dark room (provided there is a high-aperture screwdriver glass) and moreover - AF find the Negro and focus on it accurately.
                But ... is it necessary?
There is no particular point in buying a D700 now, in 2019 there is no. Finding a copy in good condition is difficult. A used one in good condition will cost close to the money for the D610, which is simpler in terms of exposure meter and AF module, but more interesting in terms of the capabilities of the matrix. The D700 camera is sturdy, but it has enough drawbacks such as a peculiar color (although this is better than the 800-k), narrow for FF DD.
Here you need to understand what the goal is when buying a camera.
                If only Nikon has no compromise AF: D500, D3 / D3s, D4 / D4s, D5, D850.
                D300s, D810, D700 are still good.
                If you need a wide DD: D800 / D800E / D810, D850, D750 / D610 / D600.
                If you need a working 3200: DF, D3s / D4 / D4s, D750 / D610 / D600.
If you need a good color without constant control over the BB for each frame: D850 is possible.
If without a holivar and if the budget allows, it is better to take new cameras like D850 or 5D_Mk4 / EOS R.

  • Paul

    Good day! People, help !!!

Already broke his head. There is a D700 on hand.
There is a dilemma, take D800 or D750. The D750 doesn't like the controls (I'm used to the D700), but it has Wi-Fi, a flip-up screen, and the noise level at high ISO is much lower than on the D700. And the D800 is positioned everywhere as a “studio” camera. I shoot mainly weddings, birthdays, banquets, weddings (places where there is little lighting, there is no need to print posters).

Only real comments on the issue. Thanks!

    • anonym

If the choice between the new d750 and the used d800 is better than the d750, if both cameras are used it’s better than d800. And it seems like the d800 is not praised for the color.

    • Alexey

      hello.

There was a D750 and a D810. Based on your type of shooting, I would take the D750 without hesitation. She has autofocus more sensitive in comparison with the D810 (D800 even more so), and there are less noise at high ISOs, and I liked more in terms of size / grip.

    • Alexey

      D800, D800E, D810 -2 to +19

    • Pokemon

      D750.
However, if you work with non-motorized screwdriver lenses, I recommend comparing with the D700. It seemed to me that the "screwdriver" on the d750 is more "lazy" than on the d700. I didn't notice the difference with motor lenses. The AF module on the d750 is really very accurate. Including at night.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Hello. Does it make sense now to buy a practically new D700 (mileage of only 4-5 thousand)? Or is it better to buy D600 for the money?

    • anonym

What tasks should the device solve?

    • anonym

If you yourself do not know the answer, then definitely take the d600.

  • Catherine

    Good evening, Alex.
I admire your forum. But I did not understand what it makes sense to change the d700.
I’ve been with him for a long time, I think the shutter will die soon, I bought it second-hand and now he has more than 400k runs and he is still alive. I shoot dogs, both portraits and movement.
I do not have enough speed, but I did not use it with a battery handle, there are no other complaints about it. I would like better picture quality, in terms of sharpness and less loss of quality when editing in the Republic of Latvia and FS.
But I still didn’t understand whether it makes sense to change it, or repair the shutter, buy a baht. pen and enjoy it further.
really want to hear your advice!
I thought about d610, but according to your comments, nothing is a replacement for the legend of 700.

    • Pokemon

      D750 as an option, look.
      Borrow and try to rent.
      Really nice camera.
If you need something noticeably faster than the d700 in AF and you need a nimble screwdriver, then as an option - look at the d3s / d4. Alive, i.e. not “millionaire” cameras will be built in, but this is not a cheap pleasure.

      • Catherine

Here many write and, Alex, among them, that 750 is not a replacement.
        Because doubts, doubts.
There are no problems with cheapness - not cheapness, I want a worthy replacement, but so far I don’t see it to say for sure that I’m taking this.

        • Alexey

          I did not write this.

          • Catherine

Sorry. I got lost in the names in the comments.
            I meant Arkady.
            I apologize again.

        • Pokemon

It is interesting to listen to the opinion of Arkady.
I decided to give my advice to the D700, I had it and I sold it without much regret.
You will feel the difference between D700 and D3s / D4 for sure.
          I had D700, D3s and there are D4 and D750.
There is nothing to be afraid of, and the D700 is not the pinnacle of camera building for a long time.

        • anonym

Catherine, Nikon has no replacement for the D700 and will no longer be. D600 / 610 is a completely different level and focus, D750 is also an amateur with a huge list of problems, perhaps the most unsuccessful camera in terms of reliability, D810 / D850 is a studio / landscape.
The closest to the D700 and the one that can be safely recommended is the Canon 5D Mark 3.
Perhaps a complete analogue, but everything is better - better AF, better color, better performance, more convenient ergonomics, etc. etc. (and there's a gorgeous 1080p video).
But - Kenon. Although it might be worth considering? Canon 5D Mark 3 can now be found very inexpensively. Lens sea. On average, the quality of the lenses is better.

          • Anonymous

          • Yurok

Quality is only in the L series, all that is below the slag. And Nikon even has whales better than Kenov whales.

            • anonym

Yurok, did you come back to life after screwing up with service software? And how he squealed, how he squealed that! How much aplomb was! )
Do you even troll from hopelessness? Did you even work with kenon lenses?
16-35 / 4 - Nikon has just slag, Kenon has the best on the market. prices are the same
100/2 - Nikon simply does not, Kenon does not have an Elk, but many times better
              50 / 1.8 STM - for $ 100, Kenon has a super lens, not an elka
135/2 - Nikon has slag, Kenon has a legendary lens. prices are the same
100 2.8 macro - prices are the same, for Nikon HA they are simply monstrous, for Kenon there is also a hybrid stub. etc.
The pros take off at all serious events specifically for kenon, statistically about 90%, white lenses are visible :)
Nikon lags behind in technology by 3-5 years, in the use of a modular design in the lenses, in the use of a normal diaphragm and not a mechanical jumping rope as ancient as g ... a mammoth, special elements, etc. etc.
Nikon is even behind Sigma and Sonya, who are copying Kenon technology with might and main.

              By price -
Mark 3 fell in price by about 3.5 times. Are you up to date with its starting price?
Did you even read the question Catherine?
Strongly big difference in price between Nikon D750 and Mark 3?
And yes, poor thing, do not post at once under several names)))

              • Alexey_S

Both Yurka and Anonymous have rather one-sided views.
Both Nikon and Canon are great companies that produce amazing cameras and lenses.
Some lenses may be better from one company, others from another. It's the same with cameras. There is no need to inflate some bullshit to the size of an elephant. Type of dynamic range bullshit, or there is no magic color or back / front focus bit. I repeat, cameras and lenses are gorgeous, often more important in whose hands they fall than the differences between the products of these companies.

In Nikon's defense, I will say that Kenon has long been in the lagging behind (for example, in terms of DD, matrix stabilization, etc., the list is large), all the latest Nikon lenses (over 5 years) have electronic aperture control (usually the letter E in the name), and statistics are a type of lie. There was a FIFA in Russia recently and there were clearly not 10% of photographers with Nikon, but much more. And in the same Canada in prof. When shooting Nikon occurs as often as Canon (according to my observations).
The D750 is one of the most successful Nikon cameras in recent memory (before the D850). It is most likely one of the TOP 5 most popular FF cameras in the world (still in the works). And you, dear Anonymous, call her unreliable, only on the news that was protested on the Internet, or did she personally let you down?
Nikon solved all the problems of the first issues under the guarantee 4-5 years ago. I think it’s almost impossible to find somewhere D750 (on sale or control unit) with those reliability defects that they are trying to attribute to them.

No need to fool people with stereotypes and advise changing the platform. This is the most expensive option (old rafting, new buy, and still need to relearn).

I can advise Ekaterina to hold the cameras of interest in her hands or to rent them, if possible. Performance characteristics are one thing, but the convenience of work is quite another.

Many say that the best replacement for the d700 is the d850, if you are not afraid of large files. Yes, she is dear now. The price for it will fall steadily, because she is on an outdated mount. So, it may make sense not to rush, especially if you are satisfied with seven hundred, which, by the way, can be bought almost for nothing. block on the secondary.

              • Anonymous

Alexei, well, why is it so inept to lie then and try to rig the facts? Not ashamed?
Alexei, I’ll tell you a terrible secret: the d750 has a long list of problems and the breakthrough is by no means due to its reliability.
And it was sold stupidly due to the fact that Nikon simply does not have a completely replacement for d700 from the word - here the hedgehogs cried, choked but ate what they could.
The D850 is much more expensive than Ekaterina wanted, and like any multi-pixel camera is not universal, it is an analog of the 5dsr kenon. Why advise this?
We go further on your mildly speaking biased stereotypical lies.
True - Nikon refuses to jump in lenses. At last. The latest of all brands. What the truth-bearer Alexey is silent about - 95% of all Nikon lenses in any store are a jump rope. Alas and ah.
Statistics is a reality, unlike Alexey observed in the yard of his house))).
True - both nikon and kenon lag behind the leaders in ibis and bz.
The truth is that kenon dd is not the best on the market.
The question is - what for is this for a person who is satisfied with the d700?
5d mark 3 in all respects is better than d700, has an excellent price and is really universal, at a price like d750 but does not have castration and problems.
It is a lie that changing the system is always expensive. It all depends on the lens park and tasks. It is possible that selling a d700, lenses and buying a mark 3 and lenses will be much cheaper than buying a d850.

I doubt that any constructive conversation can be held with you. You have already sunk to trolling in my address, in the address of Yurk, Onotole and ... a long list.

People like you spoil a healthy society with a lack of respect for others. Respect is a precious substance that either makes society (photographers in our case) stronger, more fruitful, and stronger, or in its absence, society collapses.

I’m sure you won’t hear me, don’t understand, and don’t even want to understand anything. You will continue to carry to the masses your undoubtedly the only true opinion.

I appeal to others who are looking for advice here: “Do not trust Anonymous!”. Always filter messages that openly criticize the tech. Usually, those who scold violently do not know how to use it and try to find lost self-esteem in swearing (or sponsorship monetary gain, who knows?).

                All good shots and good.

              • anonym

Dear Alexey S, he is also anonymous, he is Onotol.
You have nothing to say about the specific facts given above. There is simply nothing, the facts speak for themselves.
There simply facts you like them or not.
Yurok post just illiterate nonsense that there are no service programs and instantly shut up when it turned out that there were some.
Neither yurks, nor onotolias, nor anonymous nor cats can be trusted. It is necessary to verify the facts and take into account only them.
I hope you will not argue with this? Obviously? Respectfully
Nobody scolds the technique, meaning? Read it again.
And now a simple question - which of the facts, not your opinion or the opinion of your anonym, do you so vehemently refute?
Obviously nothing. Therefore, you are trying to translate the discussion of facts about technology into a discussion of who publishes the facts, i.e. just troll. There will be facts, for example, that the d750 has an accurate color and not a delta of 25% deviations, that on Nikon.ru most lenses are already without a jump rope, that Nikon has mastered fluorite and br, etc. - let us know what to discuss.
So far, you have not refuted one fact above, expressed very controversial judgments and immediately switched to personalities - all the signs of an ordinary troll fanboy.

              • Yurok

Anonymous, everyone will remain in their own opinion. And I did not get personal, which means stick your PUMPKING to yourself much deeper. You don’t even know me, respect your interlocutors. And at the expense of service programs, what I screwed up, I do not need it, I have decent equipment in lean hands, the time will come to sell without rewinds. And yes, I made sure that you are a real troll.

              • anonym

Alexey S, read a decent answer Yurka.
Instead of admitting that he simply did not know that the shutter counter was reset for 5 minutes, Yurok writes about "poking points" and other topics of his concern.

All the same - he cannot refute the facts, he just posted incorrect information, was caught red-handed - becomes personal.

            • Anonymous

Nikon 24-70 2.8 first version, price 1500 USD, mistakes in design and design - permanent failures of the zoom ring due to plastic guides, repair $ 500, the first sign is a characteristic crunch when zooming, after which the lens is sold on Avito.
About the same problems with nikon 14 24 2.8. At Nikon Club, these design flaws were discussed many times.
Nikon 24 -70 2.8 second version - the picture deteriorated in resolution.
According to Lensrental (the largest rental photo office in the world in the past), Nikon optics leads in all segments (width, body, zoom standard) in breakdowns and repair time. Nikon's repair time is about 3 times longer than sony, fuji and kenon.
Nikon has no analogues of BR elements, just starting to use fluorite.

Quality is only in the L series, all that is below the slag. And Nikon even has whales better than Kenov whales.

Canon 5D Mark 3 on Avito with half a million from 50 thousand, is it not expensive?

            • anonym

Did you even read the question Catherine?
Strongly big difference in price between Nikon D750 and Mark 3?

            • Catherine

but can I argue somewhere here?)
No, I won’t go to the canon, I’d just go because it has an absolutely stupid autofocus tracking system. I have a lot of animalists who take pictures of him, and the movement on Nikonas is always better, clearer and sharper, with a minimum of misses than the Canon.
But this is not about that, I am considering replacing the d700 and only in the Nikon Lenek.
Yes, as I wrote above, I need something faster, what else is served in the office services, and better in quality.
My 700 is 5 years old and I bought it from hand, I gave it for repair once, mileage more than 400k
and she’s still flying, I would also like the same tenacious.
And don’t forget that I’m shooting dogs, she can fly into the camera.
While more and more dwell on the choice of d4s.
I’ll try to test 750, 850 and 5d on dogs with the same settings in Nikon Center
              and see what happens.

              • Michael

                He doesn’t know how)

              • BB

The D750 focuses quite tenaciously and quickly, literally on 19-05 filmed oriental dances, some had to be filmed on an ancient non-motorized AF 28-80, surprisingly - he had time. Everything is fine with 70-300 / 4.5-5.6G, the percentage of misses is less than 5%. After the d7100, only the small coverage of the focus points is annoying.

          • Pokemon

The girl needs a more nimble camera than the d700, because the camera doesn't keep up with the dogs. Well, what a 5d_mk3 ... Here either one is needed or a four from Nikon. Shoot yourself for the third penny.

          • Eugene A

D750 - 215000k - no reliability issues. But the color never came through - I bought d700 again - 12MP is enough for printing up to 30x45, but I work at low ISO 200-250 with 910 flashes.
After d750 - heavy, does not remember focus points when changing camera orientation. There are no more complaints at all - the color after d750 in portraits is beauty !!!

  • Alexander

Hello everyone. Help me figure it out. D700 camera. Before buying, I checked the mileage through the shutter count online. He showed 73k. At home, I found that the active folder is number 379, which suggests that the mileage is 379k. I read on another resource that this is the real run. Please tell me how to find out the real mileage. Thank you.

    • Alexey

If the mileage is rolled up, then you won’t know about it anymore, the only reference is the folder number, the number 379 basically indicates that the actual mileage is 279k. You can check this if you insert a new card, take a few pictures and see what folder number the camera created if you certainly did not reset this parameter (by a full reset it does not reset if that!) or by formatting the old card in the computer. This is like a little hope, just the seller could sell a phot with a card that he took from another seven hundred and the folder number remained from it.

      • Alexey

I almost understood! If you mean the number of the active folder 379 in the camera settings - then yes, the real mileage is 279k

  • Alexander

Help solve the problem. Sometimes my D700 can suddenly stop working when using it. The indicator on the upper display shows that the battery is discharged, while the battery is fully charged. If you insert another battery, the problem does not disappear (both batteries are original). To fix this bug, you have to remove and reinsert the battery. Sometimes this procedure needs to be repeated 2-3 times. And it is just enough to turn off / on the camera. There is no single recipe for treatment, and I cannot identify the patterns of the appearance of such a glitch. Who faced this problem? Who knows what is the reason and how to deal with it?

    • BB

A similar problem occasionally occurs on the D7100 with a non-original bat.unit. The camera writes that the battery is in baht. the unit is discharged. Only disconnecting and connecting the battery unit helps. On-off and replacement do not help

    • Alexey

As an option, clean the average battery contact on the camera

  • Alexander

There is always something better ahead, there is no way to catch up ... Even if the D700 is not the coolest camera today, it will allow you to change your entire fleet of lenses. For very little money. 35 will be 35-50; 50 will be 50-70 ;; 24-85 will be 35-130 and TD. And the quality of the pictures (you're not a beginner) depends only on you.

  • Shel

    If there is a D 7000 + tamron 177-50 / 2.8 + 28-105 nikkor 3.-4.5
Does it make sense to take the D700? How much better, worse will the picture
    unprofessional shooting for yourself.

There is less noise and high ISO, sharpness with the same 28-105

the first one was D50 there was not enough video, I still regret that I sold it, there was order with colors too with sharpness, 6 megapixels for printing a4-a5 is enough

  • Sergei

Well, actually the known dilemma. What to choose.? D700 or d610.? I was already the happy owner of the d700 but it was stolen. He loved him very much, but the weight of the camera, even with 50 1.8, is fear. I shoot portraits and street. I plan to buy 50mm 1.4d.

  • Sergei

Arkady, thank you very much for your work!
The question is, there is the d7000, but I think to change it to the FF, it’s better that the d700 or d610 do not professionally take photos, but the FF impressed me, especially how the Soviet lenses began to open differently. Thank you in advance!

    • Michael

      610 should be better

  • Alexander

My question is why the camera can do 8 frames / s only with a pen and with the MS-10?
This is not a flash or finger batteries. Can you explain in detail how this works?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The MS-D10 is not a pen, but a holder of 8 AA batteries. The native full-time battery is apparently not enough for this. The same effect if you use a non-native battery EN-EL4 from older cameras.

  • Alexander

Give the author and everyone advice I choose between d700 and d300s))) I thank you in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, the D700 will be better in almost everything, with a few exceptions, I advise it.

  • Alexander

Hello. The link to download D2X Mode 1 to Lightroom does not work

  • Hamlet

    Hello, I need your opinion. D700 mileage 4k $ 760, D750 new $ 1180?

    • Pokemon

      Explicit over price for D700.
Can be found with low runs, but not so expensive.
Much depends on the purpose of use.
It is preferable to take the camera fresher.
Next spring, the camera is expected to replace the D750, without increasing the retail price.

  • Stanislaw

Hello. Recently acquired a D700. I wanted to ask for advice on the lens / lenses for him. I rent mainly urban architecture, landscapes, the sea, ships, griefs, etc. Often I shoot in the dark and at night. What could you advise?

    • Michael

      Tripod)
      And take 14-24

      • Vladimir

Nikon 28 / 2,8 Ais. Rare, without AF, but optically for your interests is very good.

        • Oleg

I confirm. The glass is magnificent. I ordered from Japan, in a state of practically new. Costed $ 200.

      • Stanislaw

Thank you, I will search. (There is a tripod, but I can’t always use it)
