Optical design for all Nikon Nikkor DX lenses

This is a very subjective article about the quality of lenses based on their optical design.

Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses

Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses

It is logical to assume that the more special elements are included in the design of the lens, the more expensive, and therefore better. Therefore, here you can see the optical circuits of all cropped Nikon DX lenses and draw useful conclusions. Personally, I discovered a lot of useful information on choosing a lens among the Nikon DX line. Conclusions at the bottom. If you do not know what DX is, then you can look in the section DX and FX lenses. You can also see optical circuits autofocus fixed lenses Nikon FX.

It's funny, but on the official Nikon sites you can find for some lenses (even expensive lenses) an optical circuit in the figure of 179 * 160 pixels. It seems that Nikon does not want to look closely at the circuit. I brought all the images of the optical circuits to the Radozhiva standard 720 pixels on the long side, while enlarging the image, the quality was badly damaged. Note that no Nikon DX lens has Super-ED elements.

  • ASP - aspherical elements. On lenses, indicated by the letters'aspherical'. Designed to combat aberrations. They fight well with distortion and coma.
  • Hybrid Aspherical Elements - is ASP made of special plastic (plastic), which is built up on optical glass to get ASP.
  • Extra-low Dispersion glass. Marked on lenses with 'ED'. Iimproves sharpness, combats aberrations and improves contrast. It is in more detail painted on Nikon official website, therefore, I do not go into details.
  • Nanocrystalline Coating Optics. On the lens is indicated by the letter 'N', which means' Nano Crystal Coat'. This enlightenment allows you to cope well with glare and flare, and also creates excellent color reproduction.
  • High Refractive Index Elements... On lenses are designated by the letters'H.R.I.'(high refractive index), have a high refractive index and improve image quality.

Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM

9 elements in 7 groups. One of two close-up macro lenses. This lens does not no special optical element. Even a whale lens has either ED or aspherical elements :). Nikon did not make any special investments in the optical design, but simply released a macro lens for the average consumer. On crop, this 40 mm gives EGF at 60mm, which is a very popular macro focal length. Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM review.

14 elements in 10 groups, one of which is ED glass. One of two macro lenses for crop. Small aperture not a problem, because the lens has an image stabilizer. One of many fixed lenses with VR system. Lens of low optical complexity. Perhaps the optical circuit compensates for the small number of ED elements. Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 85mm 1: 3.5G ED VR SWM IF Micro1: 1 review.

8 elements in 6 groups with one aspherical hybrid element. On the official Russian-language site Nikon did not bother to lay out the optical scheme of the lens. The hybrid element is glass mixed with plastic... It's funny, but the official English-language website says something else: with one aspherical lens (with one aspherical lens, not a hybrid one). I used the lens - it is sharp, suffers from slight distortion and blooming. Lens of low optical performance. it the only fast lens for Nikon DX. 15 elements in 11 groups: with one ED glass element and one aspherical element. The lens is slightly below average optical performance. Used a lens. Universal enough, the stabilizer works well. This lens is the second most popular whale lens, as it often comes with Nikon DX cameras. The 105mm capabilities far exceed the 18-55mm whale lenses. 18-135mm seemed sharper to me. The 18-105mm VR optical design is very similar to the 18-135mm optical design. Most likely, 18-105mm VR is an upgrade of 18-135mm with a shortening of the focal length and the addition of a stabilizer. You can view Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor review

Total: got everything 26 Nikon DX Lenses. If you missed something, please remind me in the comments.

There is practically nothing to choose from, therefore, the choice is very simple.

  • professional fast multi-purpose zoom just one: 17-55mm F2.8.
  • best dark universal zoom: 16-80mm
  • wide-angle with constant aperture just one: 12-24mm f / 4.0.
  • widest lens: 10-24mm
  • only one fish: 10.5mm F2.8, while it does not have a focus motor
  • best telephoto optic: 55-300mm VR.
  • best station wagon: 18-300 / 3.5-5.6 VR
  • fast fix only one: 35mm F1.8G
  • best macro lens in optical design: 85mm f / 3.5

The range of lenses for the NIKON DX sprinkled camera cameras is very small. If you remove the lens modifications, you have to choose from a very small number of lenses. Unfortunately not yet portrait lens for NIKON DX.

Conclusions:

The article briefly analyzes the performance of NIKON DX lenses. according to their optical design.

We are waiting for a review of FX lenses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      oh, a lot of them.

  • Oleg

Thanks for the article, Arkady, although it is really very subjective. I would like to make minor amendments and additions, first of all, for those who are just planning to purchase optics. T.N. Universals (18-200, and certainly 18-300) will always lose in quality to shorter-focus zooms due to the large focal length, no matter how well they are made. Their autofocus speed at long focal lengths, again, will not be comparable to that of higher-end telephoto lenses (for example, the 70-300 DX VR, which was not included in the review, as I understand it, because it can be used with FX- cameras). Therefore, “for all occasions” is very relative, high-speed scenes will be difficult to shoot with them, they are terribly slow ...
Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR Nikkor - as for me, a very overpriced lens, "promoted" by marketers, and 16mm is not enough for a really wide angle, it is better to take a full-fledged wide-angle.
Aperture so-called top station wagons (Nikon 17-55mm f / 2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor), in fact, is not really needed. For those who take landscapes, it is useless. For portraits, it is better to take a fixed lens with a much higher aperture. For rooms an open diaphragm 2.8 is not enough. Reportage? Only a limited number of photographers deal with it. Hence the question: is such a lens needed by an amateur?
Therefore, it is worth thinking many times whether you need to overpay for expensive optics, when the range of shooting is limited to landscape-portrait amateur photography, where quite inexpensive, budget glasses work ... I, for example, will not trade my 18-70 for any wagon.
In my opinion, in the arsenal of a photographer it is good to have the following glasses (giving maximum coverage of the focal length range): wide-angle lens, standard zoom and telephoto lens. For those who love wipe shooting, it makes sense to take a high-aperture fix (Arkady here perfectly described a whole bunch of them, so the choice is yours). But all of the above applies to people who already have some experience behind them, it is better for a beginner to first learn how to shoot with an ordinary whale lens (which, by the way, is not so bad) and not to chase the "fancy" glasses painted on the forums and standing fabulous money. Buy this, shoot a couple of times and then it will gather dust on the shelf)))
My opinion, of course, is also subjective :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks. They wrote very well. But the 70-300 DX VR doesn’t, there are only a few modifications of the FX 70-300, but this is FX and not DX. You can read about my arsenal in the section https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/04/kind-of-lens/

  • Oleg

That's right, Arkady, thanks for the amendment about 70-300 :). I just wanted to say that it can be applied on both FX- and DX-cameras. You have it perfectly described in the corresponding review.
    Thank you for your work!

I bought my first DSLR somewhere 6-7 months ago, took a lot of pictures, read different articles, instructions, tips, secrets. I learned the technique, worked out skills, and every time a question arose, I had to look for it and look again, but your resource in 4 hours of reading answered perhaps all the questions that had accumulated over half a year of use. Thank you so much and good luck in your work. I want to change the whale to 35mm or 50mm, and now I am 70% inclined towards 35, but it scares you how you described about HA ... I am sitting re-reading your article, and I just can't figure it out, I photograph mostly on the streets, people and small architectural buildings, the main bias is people in full growth.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Every day I am asked a question 35mm or 50mm - it's hard to answer. Personally, I prefer a 50mm (no distortion is extremely important for a portrait), a 35mm portrait “takes” weakly, but 50mm on a crop is just right. + all the same, I started using the full frame in the face of the D700, after which the 35th frame became useless (it is DX), and the fifty dollar remained the fifty dollar. + 50mm F1.8G, 50mm F1.8D focusing faster than 35mm. Don't forget to help the project.

    I practically do not shoot Jupiter-37A, with Nikon 50 f / 1,4 G and Nikon 180 f / 2,8 AI-S and Nikon 16-85 f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR. "Carcass" Nikon D300S, before him at one time FED-4, Smena-8M, Zenith simply, Etude, Amateur-166 and recently Nikon 40 with whale 17-55.
I was wearing Jupiter, I thought it would be tense and focus on sharpness and twist the diaphragm and look at the display, but no, like on a bicycle, I remembered and that is strange, I recently put on a 50, looked through the viewfinder and felt a certain discomfort, I do not have enough to turn something ... So I thought why people continue to work with the film and not only because of the quality, most likely an order of magnitude more than using a digital matrix and manual lenses, the mystery and thrill from the process, probably ....
and with regards to the pictures from Jupiter-37A, I really like, personally my opinion, with macro-rings in general a plague, more than with Nikon's 180s and perhaps from 50s f / 1,4, sometimes I want a little shorter than Jupiter-37A , something like Nikon 105 f / 2.0 D, probably, but about the Sigma 150 f / 2,8 MACRO I remember, too hot to try ...

Indeed, 18-105 is even inferior to 18-55 in sharpness. It is obvious. I've been taking a picture of it for half a year already. The percentage of photos that miss the focus is quite large. Who would talk about personal experience using 18-200 or 18-300?

Zdravstvuyte, Arkadiy! Prochital vse kommenti-ogromnoe spasibo! No nuzen sovet! Skoro edu v Bavariyu, g gornuyu mestnost na Noviy God! Ispolzuyu Nikon D5100 s 18-105! • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, it will be normal.

  • Mikolka

    Change kit 18-55 to NIKON AF-S 18-70 mm f / 3.5 - F4.5G IF-ED DX
і on skіlki tse will be completely, longer than tsikava tsina on the secondary market, practical on rivnі z kit VR.

    • Arkady Shapoval

18-70 is a good option, you can change it.

  • Mikolka

    First power supply, better than Nikkor 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G chi Nikkor 18-135 mm 1: 3.5-5.6G DG
in the capacity of a staff member, for a portrait like a landscape?

    • Arkady Shapoval

A 135mm portrait will turn out better than a 70mm portrait.

  • Mikolka

Ale, when she is obviously Jupiter 37a, will you singly and unsuccessfully take brothers for a portrait of 18-135 who am I having mercy on?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If there is no fear of the manual, then Jupiter-37A is a wonderful portrait.

      • Mikolka

That is, in my wake, there is still an 18-70 ideal varian, I’ll try to opt for so much less dumb pennies, and before that, I can take a future note with a note, I’m a sergey yongnuo)

        • Oleg

18-70 is an excellent lens, take it, you won't regret it! The glass is sharp, and at the long end you can even try to shoot portraits (although this is not quite a portrait lens).
          Happy New Year!

Dear Arkady! Do you think the combination of Nikon D3100 and 18-300 is acceptable?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The combination is acceptable, but the weight balance will be knocked down to which you will need to get used to.
