This is a very subjective article about the quality of lenses based on their optical design.
It is logical to assume that the more special elements are included in the design of the lens, the more expensive, and therefore better. Therefore, here you can see the optical circuits of all cropped Nikon DX lenses and draw useful conclusions. Personally, I discovered a lot of useful information on choosing a lens among the Nikon DX line. Conclusions at the bottom. It's funny, but on the official Nikon sites you can find for some lenses (even expensive lenses) an optical circuit in the figure of 179 * 160 pixels. It seems that Nikon does not want to look closely at the circuit. I brought all the images of the optical circuits to the Radozhiva standard 720 pixels on the long side, while enlarging the image, the quality was badly damaged. Note that no Nikon DX lens has Super-ED elements.
- ASP - aspherical elements. On lenses, indicated by the letters'aspherical'. Designed to combat aberrations. They fight well with distortion and coma.
- Hybrid Aspherical Elements - is ASP made of special plastic (plastic), which is built up on optical glass to get ASP.
- Extra-low Dispersion glass. Marked on lenses with 'ED'. Iimproves sharpness, combats aberrations and improves contrast. It is in more detail painted on Nikon official website, therefore, I do not go into details.
- Nanocrystalline Coating Optics. On the lens is indicated by the letter 'N', which means' Nano Crystal Coat'. This enlightenment allows you to cope well with glare and flare, and also creates excellent color reproduction.
- High Refractive Index Elements... On lenses are designated by the letters'H.R.I.'(high refractive index), have a high refractive index and improve image quality.

Universals (18-200, and certainly 18-300) will always lose in quality to shorter-focus zooms due to the large focal length, no matter how well they are made. Their autofocus speed at long focal lengths, again, will not be comparable to that of higher-end telephoto lenses (for example, the 70-300 DX VR, which was not included in the review, as I understand it, because it can be used with FX- cameras). Therefore, “for all occasions” is very relative, high-speed scenes will be difficult to shoot with them, they are terribly slow ...
Nikon 16-85mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR Nikkor - as for me, a very overpriced lens, "promoted" by marketers, and 16mm is not enough for a really wide angle, it is better to take a full-fledged wide-angle.
Aperture so-called top station wagons (Nikon 17-55mm f / 2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor), in fact, is not really needed. For those who take landscapes, it is useless. For portraits, it is better to take a fixed lens with a much higher aperture. For rooms an open diaphragm 2.8 is not enough. Reportage? Only a limited number of photographers deal with it. Hence the question: is such a lens needed by an amateur?
Therefore, it is worth thinking many times whether you need to overpay for expensive optics, when the range of shooting is limited to landscape-portrait amateur photography, where quite inexpensive, budget glasses work ... I, for example, will not trade my 18-70 for any wagon.
In my opinion, in the arsenal of a photographer it is good to have the following glasses (giving maximum coverage of the focal length range): wide-angle lens, standard zoom and telephoto lens. For those who love wipe shooting, it makes sense to take a high-aperture fix (Arkady here perfectly described a whole bunch of them, so the choice is yours). But all of the above applies to people who already have some experience behind them, it is better for a beginner to first learn how to shoot with an ordinary whale lens (which, by the way, is not so bad) and not to chase the "fancy" glasses painted on the forums and standing fabulous money. Buy this, shoot a couple of times and then it will gather dust on the shelf)))
