Optical design for all Nikon Nikkor DX lenses

This is a very subjective article about the quality of lenses based on their optical design.

Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses

Optical design for all Nikon DX lenses

It is logical to assume that the more special elements are included in the design of the lens, the more expensive, and therefore better. Therefore, here you can see the optical circuits of all cropped Nikon DX lenses and draw useful conclusions. Personally, I discovered a lot of useful information on choosing a lens among the Nikon DX line. Conclusions at the bottom. If you do not know what DX is, then you can look in the section DX and FX lenses. You can also see optical circuits autofocus fixed lenses Nikon FX.

It's funny, but on the official Nikon sites you can find for some lenses (even expensive lenses) an optical circuit in the figure of 179 * 160 pixels. It seems that Nikon does not want to look closely at the circuit. I brought all the images of the optical circuits to the Radozhiva standard 720 pixels on the long side, while enlarging the image, the quality was badly damaged. Note that no Nikon DX lens has Super-ED elements.

  • ASP - aspherical elements. On lenses, indicated by the letters'aspherical'. Designed to combat aberrations. They fight well with distortion and coma.
  • Hybrid Aspherical Elements - is ASP made of special plastic (plastic), which is built up on optical glass to get ASP.
  • Extra-low Dispersion glass. Marked on lenses with 'ED'. Iimproves sharpness, combats aberrations and improves contrast. It is in more detail painted on Nikon official website, therefore, I do not go into details.
  • Nanocrystalline Coating Optics. On the lens is indicated by the letter 'N', which means' Nano Crystal Coat'. This enlightenment allows you to cope well with glare and flare, and also creates excellent color reproduction.
  • High Refractive Index Elements... On lenses are designated by the letters'H.R.I.'(high refractive index), have a high refractive index and improve image quality.

Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM

9 elements in 7 groups. One of two close-up macro lenses. This lens does not no special optical element. Even a whale lens has either ED or aspherical elements :). Nikon did not make any special investments in the optical design, but simply released a macro lens for the average consumer. On crop, this 40 mm gives EGF at 60mm, which is a very popular macro focal length. Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM review.

14 elements in 10 groups, one of which is ED glass. One of two macro lenses for crop. Small aperture not a problem, because the lens has an image stabilizer. One of many fixed lenses with VR system. Lens of low optical complexity. Perhaps the optical circuit compensates for the small number of ED elements. Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 85mm 1: 3.5G ED VR SWM IF Micro1: 1 review.

8 elements in 6 groups with one aspherical hybrid element. On the official Russian-language site Nikon did not bother to lay out the optical scheme of the lens. The hybrid element is glass mixed with plastic... It's funny, but the official English-language website says something else: with one aspherical lens (with one aspherical lens, not a hybrid one). I used the lens - it is sharp, suffers from slight distortion and blooming. Lens of low optical performance. it the only fast lens for Nikon DX. 15 elements in 11 groups: with one ED glass element and one aspherical element. The lens is slightly below average optical performance. Used a lens. Universal enough, the stabilizer works well. This lens is the second most popular whale lens, as it often comes with Nikon DX cameras. The 105mm capabilities far exceed the 18-55mm whale lenses. 18-135mm seemed sharper to me. The 18-105mm VR optical design is very similar to the 18-135mm optical design. Most likely, 18-105mm VR is an upgrade of 18-135mm with a shortening of the focal length and the addition of a stabilizer. You can view Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor review

I did not use a lens. Has a pleasant aperture at 70mm focal length f / 4.5. Surpasses whale lenses 18-55mm. The optical design is very similar to 18-135mm, 18-105mm, but with a shorter focal length. Whale lenses are released the most, because, most likely, Nikon updated its whale lens to version ED II... I used the lens. Quite sharp at closed apertures. Otherwise - poor image quality. Total: got everything 26 Nikon DX Lenses. If you missed something, please remind me in the comments.

There is practically nothing to choose from, therefore, the choice is very simple.

  • professional fast multi-purpose zoom just one: 17-55mm F2.8.
  • best dark universal zoom: 16-80mm
  • wide-angle with constant aperture just one: 12-24mm f / 4.0.
  • widest lens: 10-24mm
  • only one fish: 10.5mm F2.8, while it does not have a focus motor
  • best telephoto optic: 55-300mm VR.
  • best station wagon: 18-300 / 3.5-5.6 VR
  • fast fix only one: 35mm F1.8G
  • best macro lens in optical design: 85mm f / 3.5

The range of lenses for the NIKON DX sprinkled camera cameras is very small. If you remove the lens modifications, you have to choose from a very small number of lenses. Unfortunately not yet portrait lens for NIKON DX.

Not bad, but I would argue about the 105th. Especially in sharpness. Whoever has a Zenith school is not afraid. I have 18-105 + Jupiter 21m. Instead of a zoom leg. but the D200 has enough buzz. Best regards to the authors ...

  • Fedor

Arkady, do not you know, for the sake of optical stabilization, an additional lens is introduced in the lenses, or is some kind of lens used in any case in the optical system “suspended”?

    • Michael

Optical schemes of sigma and tamron with and without stabilizer are different. This can be seen by the number of lenses - there is often not an additional lens suspended, but an additional one appears. lens group. Canon does the same with their 70-200 / 4, but it's hard to say: is the appearance of a stub an upgrade or a new lens?
