Overview of Tele-N 3.5 / 200

Many thanks for the opportunity to review the Tele-N 3.5 / 200 lens Ivan Kosarekov.

Overview of Tele-N 3.5 / 200

Telear-N 3.5/200 is an amazing Soviet telephoto lens. Tele-N has a 200mm focal length and F3.5 aperture, which is a very good indicator for such a large focal length.

TTX Tele-N 3.5 / 200

  • Focal Length: 200mm
  • Aperture: F / 3.5-F / 22
  • Number of aperture blades: 8 pieces
  • Weight: 700g
  • Optical design: 5/5
  • Front Filter Diameter: 62mm
  • MDF: 1.6m
  • Bayonet mount: H, similar to Nikon F, AI (sometimes PRE-AI / NON-AI)

The lens sits perfectly on the camera without causing weight imbalance.

Tele-N can very much blur the foreground and foreground. Blurring the background is very important for photographing a portrait. Tele-N can easily compete with such super expensive and high-quality professional lenses as 80-200mm F2.8 and 70-200mm F2.8, since at 200mm focal length there is maximum blurring of the background. The difference in aperture between F2.8 in modern professional zooms and F3.5 in old Tele-N is only 1.56 times. Therefore, if you need exactly a good TV set for wonderful portraits, then it may be the old Soviet Tele-N.

How to use Tele-N with modern cameras?

The Tele-N lens has the same mount as all Nikon cameras. Thus, in order to use the lens on any Nikon CTC, no adapter is needed. Also, Tele-N is an AI lens. How to use Soviet lenses you can find Nikon on any central control center in the pro section Soviet lenses, or, in the section about AI-S.

Indicators

The lens has an aperture control ring with values of F3.5, F5.6, F8.0, F11.0, F16.0, F22.0. Between F3.5 and F5.6, you can set F4.0. The depth of field scale is indicated only for F8, 16, 22.

The weight

The lens is quite weighty. Allows you to avoid shaking when photographing with your hands. Weight is associated with a good manufacturing quality of the lens of iron and glass. My copy is 1996, it is already over 18 years old, and it works just as well.

Focusing

Focus ring rotates 270 degrees. Focusing is very comfortable, smooth with a nice rubberized ring. The lens has MDF of only 1.6 meters, and after 30 meters, “infinity” begins on the focusing distance scale. When focusing from MDF to infinity, the lens trunk extends 4 cm. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Finding a 62mm filter will not be a problem.

Lens hood

The lens has a built-in telescopic lens hood.

Image quality

The lens is not sharp enough at F3.5, but this sharpness is quite enough for portrait shooting. Normal sharpness starts at F8.0. At F22.0 on my camera, sharpness deteriorates due to diffraction. At apertures up to F8.0, the lens suffers a lot from chromatic aberrations, which make the picture at F3.5 slightly soft. The lens completely lacks distortion and vignetting on cameras with an APS-C sensor. Tele-N reproduces pleasant bokeh. Unfortunately, the built-in hood does not help the lens in the fight against backlight and side light, the lens easily loses contrast in difficult conditions.

Separately, it is worth noting the lack of multi-enlightenment. In general, image quality has strengths and weaknesses.

Personal experience

Using a manual telephoto lens is quite difficult. It's not the most comfortable lens to use. In general, who does not need exactly 200 mm focal length, it is better to look towards the shorter, but more interesting lens MC Jupiter-37A 3.5 / 135.

Conclusions:

Telear-N is an old Soviet telephoto, it has many shortcomings, but a good ratio of focal length and aperture allows you to use it not only as a short telephoto lens, but also as a portrait and creative lens.

  • Gennady

Hello, you claim that the built-in retractable hood is useless in side light. In this case, you can somehow remove it so that it does not interfere with the lens? Does it make sense to buy another lens hood wound around the threads of the filter and what should it be?

  • Igor

An awesome lens, at 3.5 my copy gives out an excellent sharp image with a small GH, as you want and is required from fixing the telephoto lens, it washes the background, it does not read "plastic" - the focusing ring has a long stroke - it is convenient to focus. Don't believe what they say: "Soviet lenses are rubbish." The real rubbish is marketing !!!

  • Novel

    Hello.
What is better in picture quality on the Nikon d700
    Tele-H or Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q

  • RA4ADF

Great sharp fast lens! It turned out sharper than Tamron 70-300 and Nikkor 55-300 VR on equal focal points. Moreover, the exposure compensation by 1,5-2 stops really helps to lighten the exposed aperture. For photo hunting, only autofocus is lacking.

  • Daniel

    >>>> But in fact only Jupiter-36B 250mm F3.5 and >>>> Jasper-4H can compete with Telear-N.

    Arkady, hello.

Here the mentioned Jasper appeared. Can I test it?

  • Sergei

How to fix the hood on the Tele, so as not to live your life) ??

  • Sergei

Gorgeous lens !!! XA and I do not take light into account)))

  • Igor

Iron and glass, an excellent Soviet telephoto, sharp already at 3.5, it paints excellent!

    • Oleg

As for me, this double line in the bokeh is just awful

      • Rodion

Yes, and his sharpness is very doubtful.

  • Igor

Or maybe learn to photograph ?, and not look for chromatic aberration? Miracle experts :)!

    • Oleg

A common to the point of banality phrase of an amateur photographer. Well, okay, like it - enjoy it. But what has chromatism to do with it? In the photo, it is the disgusting double vision of lines in the out-of-focus area.

    • Oleg

And yes, Rodion, I think, fully deserves the title of "expert", without this only your "miracle".

  • Igor

Well, I thought you came here to "drive the empty"! :)

    • Oleg

As you know, bokeh is always for everyone who likes what. I just expressed my opinion about. And as for learning how to photograph ... I learn this constantly, photographing.

  • Igor

I mean, you don't need to evaluate something that you haven't tried yourself, right?
Well, bokeh is different - it depends on distance, light, etc.

  • Igor

And how did the “expert” determine that the lens is not sharp enough?

    • Oleg

I think he was shooting at him. And not only at him, probably not one hundred different lenses passed through his hands. However, maybe he himself will answer you.

  • Igor

Can a soap lens clearly capture the web on the right - can you see it?

  • Igor

No answer?! So stop “crushing water in a mortar”. And don't mislead people. Although what am I saying? , you will continue anyway

    • Oleg

I see the web. And I did not speak about sharpness. Sharpness in the lens is far from everything, but you are also unlikely to be able to understand and accept it :)

      • Igor

What else is wrong with Telear?

  • Igor

Arkady has a lot of bokeh photos - have you seen?

    • Oleg

Saw. I do not like. I like a completely different bokeh. What I said from the very first post. You like it, take pictures to your health, and calm down already.

  • Igor

If the pictures do not work out - well, not the lens is to blame!

  • Igor

Long shot - no bokeh :)

    • Oleg

      Great shot.

      • Igor

So this same Tele-H 35/200 how so?

        • Oleg

It looks like you are under something completely permissible, well, or from birth such ...
monkey work - to conduct a dialogue with you. Once again, read my first post carefully. And again, if you don't understand. About bokeh.

  • Igor

I'm fine. Here the topic is about the lens and not about the artistic value of photos and bokeh on it !!! If you have nothing to answer, it is better to be silent and not fool people. Well, if you say - justify, there are a lot of you here “masters of photography” fooling around for beginners.

  • Stanislas

    good hour, dear amateur photographers!
tell me fully and even with a photo how to change the shank from n to me2 ..
4 the screws were unscrewed, but when the shank is removed, it is removed by 5 mm and then something delays it :) I hoped it would be easier
I'm glad that 4 screws got out without incident, this is a skill :)))
ps Sori for the confusion of the narrative .. but I really need your assistance
Pss I hope for a prompt answer, I am very grateful to those who responded in advance!
    gladly thanks for the blog

    • Oleg

Is there a replaceable shank here? You did not unscrew the shank, but the bayonet. I guess you need to carefully put everything back, and buy a Nikon F / ... adapter, for example, Nikon F / canon EF, to use this lens on Canon.

  • Stanislas

Well, to name the bayonet part is the fastener itself ... from the site fotossr:
“. In addition, Telear was equipped with a removable tail on the M42. When you change the tail, the blinker stops working, but in manual mode, the diaphragm is controlled and everything is correct with the working distance. "
Apparently, this is the mechanism of the jumping rope and does not allow pulling out the back of the Nikon f .. that's a reptile :))))
it still seems to me that there is a person who changed the backdrop on the TV from nikon f to m42 and to do this you need to unscrew four screws and one more small action somewhere to push or to wring something out? :) Well, master help please ...

    • B. R. P.

Stanislav, do not break the lens, buy an adapter from the Nikon mount to the mount you need.

    • Oleg

So there is some kind of specific removable bayonet, because the usual one is screwed in with screws on the sides. Nikon has the longest focal distance of the common systems, so there is no need to change the Nikon mount to the M42, so that later, through another screw-on adapter, you can put the lens on Canon, Sony, 4/3 system, mirrorless. You can safely buy a Nikon - Canon adapter (Sony, micro 4/3 ...) and use it. Moreover, you can naturally use it on Nikon, if you suddenly need it.

  • zombie

I took one, put it on d90 .. there is a sharpness, everything works smoothly, but the camera does not want to take a picture. What's wrong?

    • Trueash

The shutter release is not allowed without a lens, most likely.

  • zombie

    and where is it included?

    • Victor

Nowhere is this included in d90, there is no such setting in principle.

You will be able to shoot with a chipless lens only in M mode.

      • zombie

I switch from AF to M, I still write the lens is not attached and there is no shutter release. Damn what to do ... help !!!!!

        • Alexey

M on the top wheel, not focus mode.

          • zombie

switched on the top mode dial in M ... no reaction ..

            • Victor

What does “no reaction” mean? Still writes “the lens is not attached” ?? Yes, in this mode, he generally has to shoot with the lens removed.

Do you have nikon at all?

              • zombie

on d90 nothing works, on d40 and d3100 the shutter started to work, but all the pictures are black, no picture. At home 18-55 everything is ok.

        • Victor

I wanted to send to page 230 of the user manual, but the person above has already chewed))

  • Oleg

Pictures are black square - because the exposure is not adjusted, because in manual mode you yourself need to select the shutter speed and other parameters. In this case, the frames are severely underexposed, so there is only blackness. It is necessary to decrease the shutter speed, open the lens aperture, increase the ISO ... that is, manually select the optimal values.

    • zombie

here is the last line of your comment and helped .. after installing all of the above, it finally went !!!
thanks to everyone who participated in the "formation" ...

  • Oleg

I bought a telear n, I'm a beginner, saw that it was threaded, put it on Nikon through a Chinese adapter (the seller didn't send me a second one) at infinity muddy photos, sharp from 30 meters, tell me what to do? Looking for a TV original?

    • Andrei

Soviet threaded lenses are mounted on Nikon through an adapter without infinity. Your bundle simply does not reach her, from that and muddy photos. Here either buy an adapter with a lens, which will negatively affect the quality, or alter the lens, or sell a threaded lens and buy with a Nikon mount

    • Sergei

“I bought a Telear N and he is with a carving” ... How so? Marking "H" means Nikon bayonet

  • Sergei

Blenda lives her own life. Does anyone know how to fix or remove it?

    • RA4ADf

The hood is kept from slipping off the lens by two screws located under the hood itself. If you move it as far as possible towards the shank, then you can unscrew these screws and remove the hood completely. Well, or removing, glue the worn seal. I used pieces of natural suede. I pasted the same strips on the inside of the front cover of the lens.

    • Arthur

      Personally, I did this:
      1) I unscrewed the two bolts that the hood rests against when it is not extended
      2) Having lowered the hood, I saw such a glued foam in a circle and pasted an additional piece of my foam on one side
And then the factory paralon, over time, rubs and crouches, because of this it does not hold
