History

The Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM was the first of its kind, but eventually upgraded to Sigma 30 / 1.4 Art.

As a result, there are three similar Sigma lenses:

Separately, it is worth highlighting an alternative for the Sigma 30 / 1.4 Art - a zoom lens with a very high aperture Sigma 18-35 / 1.8 DC Art and full-frame-like lens Sigma 35 / 1.4 Art.

And Sigma has another less light 'thirty' - Sigma 30mm 1: 2.8 DN | A (Art) for mirrorless cameras Micro 4/3 and Sony E.

The Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM is a good fast prime lens for cropped APS-C cameras. Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM is available for different mounts (Canon, Nikon, Sigma). This review presents an option specifically for the Nikon system. Please note that this lens will only work on Nikon DX cameras, and will not work correctly on FX type cameras. Nikon D3, D800 etc.

It's funny, but the company Nikon in the summer of 2012 does not have a single super fast aperture for cropped Nikon DX cameras. At the same time, the Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM not only has amazing aperture, but also positioned as a professional lens, for which EX marking is responsible.

  • AF HSM (Auto Focus, Hyper Sonic Motor) - built-in silent focusing motor.
  • EX (EXcellence) - maximum, excellent quality of performance.
  • DC - for APS-C cameras, in this case for Nikon DX
Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM nice lens design

Photo by Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM. The lens pattern is very nice

Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM very fast focus. The focusing ring is very convenient and rotates in the active mode 90 degrees, in the passive mode the ring travel is not limited. But, unfortunately, the focus does not fully support the Nikon M / A mode on the lens. you cannot make manual corrections focus when autofocus mode and AF-C. When autofocus is on and you turn the focus ring with your hands, a conflict occurs between the manual and automatic focusers.

Important: Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM does not have a focus mode switch, with the lens attached, auto focus is always on. This is very inconvenient on the younger line of Nikon cameras (which do not have a focus motor), since in order to switch the camera to manual focus mode M (MF), you need to poke around the menu for a long time. On older Nikon cameras that have a built-in focus motor, you can switch to manual focus mode quite quickly using the special lever near the lens mount.

Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM no internal focus, but the focusing method itself makes it possible to use any filters without problems, since the filter is screwed into the lens barrel, and not into the front lens barrel. The front lens in this case moves back and forth in the middle of the frame and does not rotate. The same focusing method can be found with Nikon lenses, for example Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor и Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor.

Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM for Nikon Designed for Nikon DX cameras only. This means that when used on APS-C NIKON DX cameras, the viewing angle will be narrower than on a classic 35mm film, and EGF will fit 45mm. This is a rather convenient field of vision for a fixed lens, since the lens becomes almost universal on crop. On the APS-C Canon 1.6X, the lens almost turns into a fifty dollars with 48 millimeters of focal length. How much such a focal length will be convenient, you need to decide for the photographer himself.

Fans of shooting different trifles Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM is not very suitable, since the lens has a minimum focusing distance of as much as 40 cm, and the lens simply can not focus on objects that are closer than this distance. Given the viewing angle at 30mm focal length, even photographing a flower close-up will be quite difficult.

The lens is very heavy. Yes, I was very surprised that such a small 30mm fix weighs as much as 430g. On my little camera Nikon D40 the weight balance is rather unusually distributed. The lens itself is made really to the highest level. The lens boasts the inscription “Lens Made in Japan”, the same is written on the front cover.

Lens hood

The Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM comes with a hood included. The hood can be worn backwards to the front of the lens and always carried with you. With your back on in front of the hood, access to the focusing ring is completely blocked.

Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM compared to Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor

Nikon has a similar lens - Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkorwith a slightly larger focal length and a little smaller aperture. Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor weighs two and a half times less, costs two and a half times cheaper and gives excellent quality. The Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM outperforms its native counterpart in aperture, focusing speed and distortion. If there is a choice between these two lenses, I would take my own 35-lens.

Sample Photos

All sample photos were taken on camera. Nikon D40. I specifically used the old non-motorized camera to show that all functions work fine even on the simplest camera. All photos without processing, reduced size 1600 * 1200 and imprinted data from EXIF.

Image quality

Image quality was up to par. The sharpness in the center is high even at F1.4, at the edges the sharpness becomes good with an aperture of F2.8, from F2.8 to F16.0 the sharpness is just wonderful. Even at F16.0, diffraction has little effect on quality, therefore, shooting the landscape will be quite simple. The lens has very small HAmuch less than Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor... Slight vignetting is noticeable at open apertures. The Sigma AF 30mm f / 1.4 EX DC HSM delivers a “star effect” from F2.0. Using an 8-blade diaphragm produces nice bokeh that is slightly curled around the edges of the frame. The lens tolerates side and back light well, gives normal contrast and color rendition. The only drawback is the slight barrel distortion. In general, the picture quality is at a very good level.

Personal experience

I personally found it strange such a lot of weight and the lack of a focus switch, and even the focus is not internal with a very large MDF. But with all this, the lens really meets the class of professional top-end lenses. On my copy stands protective filter at 62mm and the focusing is actually internal. The lens has a very large aperture F1.4, but this will not allow normal taking photos with blurry background, since the lens has a very small focal length, and infinity “begins” after 2 meters.

    Anyone interested in wedding photography.
The unequivocal answer is no. And not only because of the instability of the result.
Arkady, resolve the question. Why does my Sigma 35 behave better in tracking focus? The mode is set - focus and release.
    Thank you in advance.

ALEXANDER Good afternoon and what you need to connect so that the motor works on Sigma 1: 1.4 30 mm, the Nikon D5300 device. Thank you in advance

    • Jeka

This is spam! They say that the link leads to the Canon 85-ku, and on the whole site there is no information either on Sigma 35mm, or on the observed 30mm

  • Sergei 02

At the forum for the photographer, there was an infa that when the af is pointed at the subject and the shutter button is pressed halfway, the af can be manually corrected. Maybe someone knows? This is the objective.

  • Yana

Strange video sequence for the review.
At least one sensible portrait on the open one was brought - to feel the sharpness, to evaluate the bite.
It is unlikely that buyers of equipment that position themselves as "professional" are aiming to shoot flowers.

    • Alexey

Yana, you will be surprised, but professional photography is not only about portraits. Let's just say that the proportion of portrait photography is generally extremely small in professional photography :) Moreover, 30mm is not a portrait focus at all, therefore examples are just adequate for the use of this lens.

  • Dmitriy

Please tell me what viewing angle is approximately, is it the same as on the whale (18-55) with a value of 30-35?

  • Valery

Good day! On Nikon crop, which is better to take: Sigma 30 1,4 Art or twice as expensive as Sigma 35 1,4? I do not plan to switch from crop, is it worth the overpayment in this case? Or, nevertheless, the difference in crop will be palpable, in those image quality under equal conditions.

  • Dmitriy

I have two cameras D40 and D90. I noticed that it works perfectly with the D40, but on the D90 the focus goes as much as 14 cm and it is practically impossible to photograph them. Did the author try to put it on his D80? How's the trick?

  • Dmitriy

Personally, I took it because of the high aperture of 1.4, because I often “have” to photograph my child, which is moving very quickly, and it is not always quick to organize normal lighting. Yes, there is a lot of marriage, but no one forbids making a series. I tried to use flashes - it's useless, reflect-do not reflect, they hit in the eyes. Okay, when in the eyes of adults :), but the child is really sorry. So I advise, the focal point is convenient both for an apartment and for the street, one thing I advise you to check the front-back focus when buying on the particular camera you will use.

  • Dmitriy

I didn’t wait for an answer, I wrote myself a D 200 from Japan, screwed this lens. The focus is actually in place! On first impressions a wonderful machine.

Having bought yogo - a copy left - re-focusing on the front - back focus and on-screen photo camera, all is good. Vdoma on the computer, I swung a little cute, the regulation on the D7000 didn’t help. But I didn’t step in - on the current day they took me back - to the service center near Kiev, we corrected. After a month of prizes, I’ve got everything from a leaflet and a sign, but I don’t know all the good and stinky problems :( I’ve been tormented from D7000 for three days - I know the number = -17! Not more and not less - The most important thing was to piss the picture - it’s exactly from the treasure bullet to guess. Aleono that warte is a super picture. Actually just a class - yes a super beautiful picture, a bokeh garnet. Sharp focus is average, a lot more is possible. Potim having bought D90 - for the most part, do not take photos, then focus on 4+ - m ? Auger Tse to scho megapіkselіv less then Ob'єktiv on carcasses, de Je thin pіdstroyka autofocus - yak i OAO All nerіdnі ob'єktivi in printsipі Hіba tіlki poschastit -. • Konstantin

I have it too. A long time ago. Version for Sony. What is interesting is that it behaves very differently on different cameras. On the A320, autofocus was not stable. On the A580 more or less. On a NEX5n with an autofocus adapter with a translucent mirror, the autofocus adjustment had to be set to -10. Now the NEX7 camera and with the same adapter fits perfectly without any adjustments, and for the first time I saw its real sharpness at aperture 1.4. In general, I am very satisfied and use it as a staff.

  • Vladislav Gavrilyuk

Yes) completely universal, very fast infection)
On a crop - you don't think perfect)
I sell mine - go to ff)

    • Vladimir

Vladislav - how much? (from NNovgorod)

      • Vladislav Gavrilyuk

Wow, far from Novgorod. For 4650. In hryvnias. But he is in perfect condition) we will not anger Arkady, wlad.bro@ya.ru

"The lens itself is really top notch, a solid piece of iron, plastic and metal." It can replace either “iron” or “metal” with “glass”. So the optical properties of the lens will be better (especially the aperture), and it will become lighter by a dozen grams ;-)

  • Vladimir

And I have developed a non-growing lately, I like that still a pervert use it as a portrait painter. And now all the tricks go instead of eyes to ears! Although in the viewfinder everything is absolutely as it should be and it looks. In the photo - ears, earrings and anything else, but not where the focus should be ... I can't imagine how to treat it, even the intra-chamber alignment, which is present in the d300s, has nothing to do with it. Within a year, everything was fine and here it is, and I don’t understand what’s the matter. Maybe someone came across, tell me?

    • Ivan

Close the diaphragm, since the front portrait. Or do you want the eyes in sharpness and the ears out?

      • Vladimir

Well, before that it turned out, the eye was caught =) in conditions of no illumination, it is not an option to raise the ISO, the puff also disappears. And now, well, just the same steadily past ...

    • Michael

as an option: maybe you shoot very close. subject closer to min.

I just read about this Sigma. I have it (or she), and I agree with Arkady, a great lens.
The main thing is to be able to work with him. I just went to read about it with Keny Rockwell, so he spits on. What is not surprising, Kenya has the habit of shooting all the time in AF-C, not thinking much about the nuances, and dreaming of eternal comfort as the meaning of life.
Remembering its origin, one should not be surprised. So you do not believe him much.

The Germans in the photo zone are also not happy. But everything is clear here, the laboratory conditions and the German off-scale pedantry bordering on schizophrenia.
They can be wound on a mustache, but one cannot completely trust them either.

In general, with sharpness and AF, everything is in order. My Nikon 50mm f / 1.4D misses a lot more often. For such a price (I took it for 200 sluggish green presidents) of similar quality can not be found.
I recommend it if you know how to handle such things (it’s naturally best for octopuses not to touch it).

  • Jury

Arkady, when you write that when focusing the front lens moves back and forth in the middle of the frame and does not rotate, the question may arise - what happens to the rear lens? And when you write "lens block", the readers understand that both the front and rear lenses move :) And another question: do the CRC fixes also move the entire lens block?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. If it is said for the front - about the back is unknown, I just forget to look.
      2. If the entire lens block means everyone is moving.
      3. There are different options with CRC, it's just a correction of the position of the lenses at short focusing distances.

      • Jury

asked because all the fixes that I saw move the entire lens unit, in theory, it should be so in all fixes - otherwise it will no longer be a fix :) And I have no CRC lenses - nowhere to see

        • Arkady Shapoval

In fact, almost all modern fixes have internal focusing, or RF type focusing, for example, all Nikon 85ts and a bunch of others.

  • Peter Sh.

Just yesterday, I acquired the new Nikon Nikkor 35mm f / 1.8 FX for shooting in poor light. I decided to compare it on the DX with this. Spent 4 hours on two different cameras, but could not get a picture that was similar in quality to Sigma.
I will take it. Damn that, honestly, Nikon began to drive hack.
    All upset, in short.

  • Alexey

Correct the article, infinity starts at 16.75 meters according to the calculator http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html. I got similar results with this lens. Even with five meters shooting people at full height, the backdrop is quite blurry
