Review Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Many thanks for the opportunity to review the excellent full-frame zoom Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF Sergey Svirida. and the store www.fotika.com.ua.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Externally and functionally, the Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is very similar to its younger brother Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (1998 release). Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D was produced from 2000 to 2012. In 2012 the lens was replaced with a newer model - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

The name does not indicate a number of important lens parameters, for example Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF has excellent 9 blade aperturewhich can create pleasing bokeh. Among similar lenses 9 blades aperture only have Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (predecessor and younger brother) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (+ its NON-D MKI version).

The lens weighs a little more than 500 grams. The optical scheme of the lens includes as much 15 elements in 11 groupsAt the same time, as many as 2 aspherical elements are included in the design. The diameter of the front filter is quite large, and is 72 mm.

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses... Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D is one of the few lenses that has a red 'L' ('Lock') near the aperture lever.

Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D replaces older model Nikon 28-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor. The lens feature is macro option. The work in macro mode is rather strange, but effective. The lens has two modes of operation: Normal and Macro - modes are switched using the lever on the lens. In 'Normal' mode, the lens minimum focusing distance (MDF) is 50 cm.In 'Macro' mode, the MDF becomes 21 cm, while the lens can shoot at maximum 1: 2 magnification... This is a very good indicator for this kind of lens. In 'Macro' mode, autofocus even works, unlike, for example, Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII), which is available only manual focus in macro mode.

Maximum trunk length Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Maximum trunk length Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Attention: the 'Macro' mode can only be enabled if the lens has a focal length of 35 to 85 mm. At 24mm 'Macro' will not turn on. Also, to exit the macro mode, you need to set the focusing distance greater than 50 cm, otherwise the switch will not budge.

Important: if the focusing ring moves between the MDF and 50 cm, it will not be possible to turn on the 'Normal' mode and unscrew the zoom by 24 mm. This is pretty annoying. But, despite the fact that the 'Macro' mode is implemented with some inconveniences and limitations, the benefits of it are quite significant. Personally, I am a big fan of taking pictures in my free time.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has incredibly fast focusing. Yes, this is a very fast focusing zoom lens. Fast focusing is most likely due to the fact that the focus ring rotates only 30 degrees (in Normal mode). The lens focuses almost instantly... In this case, the lens uses an internal type of focusing (the front lens does not rotate during zooming and focusing). For a non-motorized old man of 2000, this is a huge praise. Well, in the 'Macro' mode, the camera rotates the focusing ring for a rather long time to focus. I personally recommend working in 'Macro' mode with manual focus. You can ask any 'macro shooter' (macro photographer), and he will answer that manual focus mode is simply irreplaceable for macro photography.

Note: During autofocus, the focusing ring rotates and it sometimes interferes. The lens does not have a focus mode switch, therefore, you will need to turn autofocus on or off using the lever on the camera (located near the camera mount). There are now many lenses with M / A + Mthat do not rotate the focus ring during auto focus.

The lens is assembled quite solidly, but it feels like it is made of plastic. Of course, the mount is metal. The focus and zoom ring are rubberized. After several years of use, a slight backlash of the zoom system is felt, and also the elastic band of the zoom ring swells a little. Also included is a hood that can be installed backwards.

Rumor has it that lenses with serial numbers starting with '2' or '3' are less assembled and give poor image quality compared to lenses with serial numbers starting with '5'. Lenses with a serial number starting with a '5' have been produced since 2006.

Image quality:

Don't rely on the f / 2.8 aperture. Firstly, it is available only at 24mm, and secondly, the image at F / 2.8 at the edges of the frame is quite soft. Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has a distortion that is strongly barrel-shaped at 24mm and light pincushion at 85mm. Strong vignetting is noticeable at 24mm and f / 2.8. It's funny, but in the center the lens shows good sharpness, at 85 mm the sharpness in the center drops slightly. In general, the lens is not the sharpest at fully open apertures, but this cannot be called “soap”. At 85mm F4.0, you can get good portraits. Replacing is very strong at a wide angle. HA... Color reproduction is normal. The lens is afraid of backlight. In general, for a zoom lens, Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D shows normal picture quality... But here's a new, darker Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Significantly better in terms of image quality.

Personal impressions

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a very interesting option for an all-rounder with a 3.5X zoom for a full frame. In fact, it is one of the most popular native replacements for very expensive professional Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8GN ED и Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED). In fact, based on the aperture ratio, the Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF is the only replacement since its brother Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical already lost all the charm of f / 2.8 and macro mode. For cropped cameras Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF will greatly lose its versatility due to the wide angle, but it will also be suitable for a street reporting lens on Nikon DX cameras. If you are looking for such a lens, then there is a wonderful offer from Tamron in the face Tamron 28-75mm with excellent image quality and macro mode.

Conclusions

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a good versatile full-frame zoom lens with a rather unusual aperture and the possibility of macro shooting. Lost in image quality to new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

I am interested in the NIKON 24-85 / f 3.5-4.5 G ED AF-S lens. Arkady! Interested in your opinion about this model. Which one should you choose: Tamron 28-75 /2.8 or Nikon 24-85 /3.5-4.5? Thanks in advance.

  • Eugene

And I had a Tamron 28-75 / 2.8. I used it first on d40, then he migrated to d7000. Was pleased with him for the most part. Sharpness seemed to be ... ..then he sold (the construct was falling apart) and took the subject. Now I remember with horror Tamron. Nikkor has a three-dimensional picture (albeit not so sharp), while Tamron has a flat one ... ... well, I don't know ... there is no air, chtoli? I wonder if you can put it that way? In short, I'm for Nikon 24-85 / 2.8-4D

  • Vlad

    Arkady didn’t accidentally make a mistake that 24-85f / 2,8-4 is worse than 24-85f / 3,5-4,5vr?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I was not mistaken. The aperture ratio does not always "decide".

      Yes I can.

In the answers above, you referred to Tokins 28-70, 28-80. Should I change them to this Nikkor? Carcasses D70, D200.

  • Vladimir

Good day. Please advise which lens is better to buy: Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D IF or TOKINA AF 28-80 mm f / 2.8 AT-X Pro, cameras: D90, D700; I shoot at the amateur photographer level: family, animals, (for money I rent vignettes in kindergartens on Arsat 2.8 / 100 or Nikkor 50 / 1,8D). There were never zoom lenses, (all fixes and fixes), I want something universal. Thanks.

Arkady good evening. Please tell me about the quality of the picture on the crop camera, which is better than the Nikon 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D IF AF Zoom-Nikkor or the Sigma 17-70mm f / 2,8-4,5 DC Macro HSM for Nikon F.
Thank you in advance for your reply.

  • seva8698

The best option: Sigma 17-70 / 2.8-4.0 with a stabilizer. Today I saw on the OLH for 4200-very cheap.

It is a pity Arkady does not have a review of this worthy and very popular lens.

I worked with Tamron 28-75 / 2.8 camera Nikon D700 for four years. For indoor work, the lens suited me, only 24mm was not enough. And landscape photography did not satisfy. My wife shot Nikon D80 with original Nikon 18-135mm, 3.5-5.6 and landscape photos were more voluminous and warmer. Yesterday I bought a Nikon 24-85, 2.8-4.0 lens. Today was the first indoor shooting in very difficult conditions. The lens performed well, but the main test and comparison is ahead ...

    • Simon

How did you test the Nikon 24-85? Compared to Tamron ...

"There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself, to switch the lens to manual focus mode, you must switch the camera to manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount." And please tell me how to do this procedure on Nikon D5100, there is no such switch there? Thanks in advance for your reply.

        Do not mislead people.

    • BB

This lens does not have a built-in motor, the D5100 will always only have manual focus.

  • Alexey

Hello everyone. I do not understand, of course, why the Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro is worse than the new but cheaper Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical? I have been looking at him for a long time and want to get it. But this comparison disappointed me a little.

  • Alexander

I purchased this lens on 19.03.2016/5100/5100 in the commission, it seems in a normal state, for very cheap (as it seemed to me). I'm testing in both modes (normal and macro) a couple of days. I’m very nice, really, I'm just an amateur. By the way, I asked a question about the switch in the Nikon DXNUMX (“There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself, to put the lens in manual focus mode, you should put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera’s mount.” And tell me, please how to do this procedure on the Nikon DXNUMX, is there no such switch there?).
Now I can give the answer myself. It turns out everything is very simple. On Nikon itself, for example, you set the auto mode, and on the lens you manually adjust the focus with the front focusing ring. Then a green dot lights up in the viewfinder and ... you take a picture. In this way, I was able to shoot without straining the pigeons in flight and, it seems, without smears. But I like to shoot with this lens in full manual mode or with aperture priority. In general, it seemed to me that it would be difficult to shoot, but everything is very simple and exciting. Sorry for such a long and not very competent writing.

    Good day.

  • Georgy

Arkady, 2.8 is this glass working? Now I use 28-70 3.5-4.5D at 7100. In terms of sharpness and everything else, I am happy - I am happy as an elephant, but I lack a very slightly wide angle (those 24 mm, 18 I don't need) and, sometimes, a little higher aperture than 3.5. Fixes 35 and 50 pleased us with aperture and sharpness, but for me their focal points are often useless. About 24mm 1: 2.8 your conclusions are ambiguous. So I think it's worth taking the 24-85 2.8-4, considering it as an alternative to 24mm 1: 2.8 at the wide end for shooting at an open aperture? At the same time, I look closely at 24-120 (old af-d) and if at 24mm the results are almost the same, I don't see any sense in the lens from this review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is a variation in quality. I did not meet workers at 2.8, I met very sharp ones at 2.8. The lens has been modified over time. Rumor has it that lenses whose serial number starts with the numbers '2' or '3' are poorly assembled and produce poor images compared to lenses whose serial number starts with the numbers '5'. Lenses with a serial number starting with the number '5' have been in production since 2006. Also, many copies are simply defective, there is a difficult installation of the rear lens.

      • Georgy

Another stupid question: how can a person who has seen live sigma 24-135 and 24-85 from this review be able to say about the wide end how big the difference is at aperture 2.8? If we drop the bad / good factor and compare impressions? I would have looked myself, but in our city you cannot really buy glasses except for whales 18-55 and 55-200, you have to order everything or go.

        • Arkady Shapoval

A good nikkor will be better.

          • Georgy

Thanks! I will look for nikkor 5xx

  • Konstantin

Tell me if this lens is suitable for Nikon d5100?

    • anonym

only autofocus will not be, because D5100 does not have a screwdriver

      • Konstantin

And the last question. I understand that this lens has a wide viewing angle? Tk I have to shoot both a portrait and a group photo.

        • anonym

for portraits will do (85mm is, that's good). and for landscapes / architecture on Crop you need a wider angle. at least 18mm. because this lens is for a full frame, then it has a wide angle not so wide)
18mm however people are not photographed, if only for people, then 24mm is enough for you

          • Konstantin

            Thank you for your reply.
I take this lens only for shooting children's portraits and group photographs. Tk Fifty is already there, but you need to take a good lens, both for a relatively wide viewing angle and for a portrait.

Hello. Can this lens be compared with Nikon 24-120mm 1: 3.5-5.6D AF Nikkor?

Arkady, good afternoon! I have Nikon d300 and Nikon lenses 12-24 m 18-200. I mostly photograph landscapes. The last lens is not very sharp, it is soapy and lacks dust and moisture protection. Been using this lens on D 300S and D600 for about a year. Then he sold it with a fool. Maybe I got a good copy, but the quality of the photos was a solid four. Macro is pretty good, sharp with hole 4 at medium focal lengths. With 5.6, the picture is good at almost all focal lengths. CA and distortion are not much worse than in 24-70 2.8. And I had something to compare with. 14-24 Ф2.8, 24-70 Ф2.8, 85 Ф1.4, 100 Ф2.8, 17-105 3.5 - 5.6, Sigma 50 1/4. The bokeh in good lighting isn't bad either. I really liked it. Now again I want to buy a D 700 carcass as a staff.
