Review Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Many thanks for the opportunity to review the excellent full-frame zoom Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF Sergey Svirida. and the store www.fotika.com.ua.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Externally and functionally, the Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is very similar to its younger brother Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (1998 release). Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D was produced from 2000 to 2012. In 2012 the lens was replaced with a newer model - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D

The name does not indicate a number of important lens parameters, for example Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF has excellent 9 blade aperturewhich can create pleasing bokeh. Among similar lenses 9 blades aperture only have Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (predecessor and younger brother) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (+ its NON-D MKI version).

The lens weighs a little more than 500 grams. The optical scheme of the lens includes as much 15 elements in 11 groupsAt the same time, as many as 2 aspherical elements are included in the design. The diameter of the front filter is quite large, and is 72 mm.

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses... Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D is one of the few lenses that has a red 'L' ('Lock') near the aperture lever.

Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D replaces older model Nikon 28-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor. The lens feature is macro option. The work in macro mode is rather strange, but effective. The lens has two modes of operation: Normal and Macro - modes are switched using the lever on the lens. In 'Normal' mode, the lens minimum focusing distance (MDF) is 50 cm.In 'Macro' mode, the MDF becomes 21 cm, while the lens can shoot at maximum 1: 2 magnification... This is a very good indicator for this kind of lens. In 'Macro' mode, autofocus even works, unlike, for example, Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII), which is available only manual focus in macro mode.

Maximum trunk length Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Attention: the 'Macro' mode can only be enabled if the lens has a focal length of 35 to 85 mm. At 24mm 'Macro' will not turn on. Also, to exit the macro mode, you need to set the focusing distance greater than 50 cm, otherwise the switch will not budge.

Important: if the focusing ring moves between the MDF and 50 cm, it will not be possible to turn on the 'Normal' mode and unscrew the zoom by 24 mm. This is pretty annoying. But, despite the fact that the 'Macro' mode is implemented with some inconveniences and limitations, the benefits of it are quite significant. Personally, I am a big fan of taking pictures in my free time.

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2)

Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has incredibly fast focusing. Yes, this is a very fast focusing zoom lens. Fast focusing is most likely due to the fact that the focus ring rotates only 30 degrees (in Normal mode). The lens focuses almost instantly... In this case, the lens uses an internal type of focusing (the front lens does not rotate during zooming and focusing). For a non-motorized old man of 2000, this is a huge praise. Well, in the 'Macro' mode, the camera rotates the focusing ring for a rather long time to focus. I personally recommend working in 'Macro' mode with manual focus. You can ask any 'macro shooter' (macro photographer), and he will answer that manual focus mode is simply irreplaceable for macro photography.

Note: During autofocus, the focusing ring rotates and it sometimes interferes. The lens does not have a focus mode switch, therefore, you will need to turn autofocus on or off using the lever on the camera (located near the camera mount). There are now many lenses with M / A + Mthat do not rotate the focus ring during auto focus.

The lens is assembled quite solidly, but it feels like it is made of plastic. Of course, the mount is metal. The focus and zoom ring are rubberized. After several years of use, a slight backlash of the zoom system is felt, and also the elastic band of the zoom ring swells a little. Also included is a hood that can be installed backwards.

Rumor has it that lenses with serial numbers starting with '2' or '3' are less assembled and give poor image quality compared to lenses with serial numbers starting with '5'. Lenses with a serial number starting with a '5' have been produced since 2006.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself, to translate the lens into manual mode focus should put the camera in manual mode focusing using the switch located near the camera mount.

Image quality:

Don't rely on the f / 2.8 aperture. Firstly, it is available only at 24mm, and secondly, the image at F / 2.8 at the edges of the frame is quite soft. Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has a distortion that is strongly barrel-shaped at 24mm and light pincushion at 85mm. Strong vignetting is noticeable at 24mm and f / 2.8. It's funny, but in the center the lens shows good sharpness, at 85 mm the sharpness in the center drops slightly. In general, the lens is not the sharpest at fully open apertures, but this cannot be called “soap”. At 85mm F4.0, you can get good portraits. Replacing is very strong at a wide angle. HA... Color reproduction is normal. The lens is afraid of backlight. In general, for a zoom lens, Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D shows normal picture quality... But here's a new, darker Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Significantly better in terms of image quality.

Personal impressions

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a very interesting option for an all-rounder with a 3.5X zoom for a full frame. In fact, it is one of the most popular native replacements for very expensive professional Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8GN ED и Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED). In fact, based on the aperture ratio, the Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF is the only replacement since its brother Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical already lost all the charm of f / 2.8 and macro mode. For cropped cameras Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF will greatly lose its versatility due to the wide angle, but it will also be suitable for a street reporting lens on Nikon DX cameras. If you are looking for such a lens, then there is a wonderful offer from Tamron in the face Tamron 28-75mm with excellent image quality and macro mode.

Conclusions

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a good versatile full-frame zoom lens with a rather unusual aperture and the possibility of macro shooting. Lost in image quality to new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Hello, Arkady! Interested in your opinion, which lens will work better with the D7000 - 24-85 2.8-4 nikkor or 16-85 f / 3.5-5.6 VR? I plan to shoot both on the street and at home, children, adults, maybe a reportage. rarely - landscapes, architecture. + plans include the purchase of Sb700 flash and fifty kopecks 1.4G in the near future. thanks in advance for your reply)

    • Arkady Shapoval

16-85 will be much more convenient for reporting, landscapes because of the wider angle.

      • Lena

despite the crop factor? They say that on my camera you can’t especially count on a wide angle with this lens. Based on your answer, you would prefer a wide angle and a stab aperture, right?

        • Arkady Shapoval

24mm on the crop will give EGF at 36mm, and 16mm on the crop will give EGF at 24mm, at the wide end, each millimeter plays a role, I would prefer a wide angle than 2.8 from 24-85.

          • Lena

thank you very much for your help!

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, I already broke my head. Please recommend, if there are fixes 35 and 50, I want more for traveling (Prague, Bukovel, pedestrian Crimea). What is better to take to me on D-90:

Nikon 24-85mm f / 2.8-4.0D IF AF Zoom-Nikkor is a great lens with interesting aperture performance, but loses wide angle at crop
    - Nikkor 16-85mm f / 3,5-5,6G VR - has a wide-angle range, but less aperture and questionable picture quality (?)
    - Nikkor 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR ll - no rave reviews have been heard from your reviews either ...

    Thank you in advance

    • Arkady Shapoval

      In this situation, I recommend Nikkor 16-85mm f / 3,5-5,6G VR

      • Dmitriy

        Here, they seem to have noted for themselves - Nikkor 16-85mm f / 3,5-5,6G VR, but then appeared - Nikkor DX 18-300mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S and - Nikon AF-S 24- 120mm f / 4G ED VR ... I'm confused again ...%)

        • Arkady Shapoval

If you have funds for the Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f / 4G ED VR, then the choice is clear in its direction.

  • Dmitriy

    Thanks for the recommendation!

  • Hleb

Yes, I still have a Nikon AF 24-85mm 2,8-4D Nikon AF lens, I thought about taking the D7000, and now I think it might be better to sell this lens, all the same, crop factor ?! advise .. thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is quite simple - if you are not satisfied with the EGF on the crop, then sell it. If satisfied, leave.

  • Hleb

Arkady, thanks, another question: it makes sense for an amateur to consider the new d5200, or is it better to leave the choice to the d7000, I used the d3100 for a year, now I’m selling it, what should I take, in the future I plan to take an additional TV set to click for myself .. Thank you

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, the d7000 is a more advanced camera, and I recommend it.

  • Simone

Kind time of the day, for the first time I bought myself a DSLR (for the beginning of d90) and I plan to photograph people on horseback on nature.
I reviewed all the lenses, and could not understand which of the lenses can give a good image.
certainly, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S lens would be ideal, but 46 thousand is still too much for me) I want something more "budgetary"
If it’s not difficult for you, could you help me in finding a lens that will not lubricate the horse and at the same time give a good and high-quality picture?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The horse will not be oiled if you take a short shutter speed, and then think about which lens is suitable for this.

      • Simone

        very grateful for the advice))

  • Dmitriy

Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 2,8-4D lens I have always stood on the Nikon d7000 camera for more than a year, the lens is not very bad, it’s universal, but it opened to the full when I changed the camera to the Nikon d600, though it became more difficult to blur the background. :) In my opinion, you should not take it on a crop, if only for the future when there will be a FF camera. On the Nikon d7000 I really liked the Nikkor AF 55-300f / 4.5-5.6 DX lens, the portraits are excellent, it beautifully blurs the background, but in to prevent shooting, you need a flash because it is dark and you need enough space (he has a minimum focus distance of 1.1 meters. With respect.

  • Sergei

Good afternoon, Arkady. And can you say something about shooting video on a 24-85mm f / 2,8-4d if lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I can’t, I’m not shooting video.

  • Yana

Hello, I have a D80 camera with an Nikkor-50 mm 1: 1.8 AF lens. I would like to purchase a zoom lens for shooting not only portraits of a child, but also walking, nature. Please advise which lens is better to choose?
Nikkor 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D IF AF or Tamron AF 28-75mm 2.8? Thank you in advance!

  • Alexander

Hello Arkady! Please help me decide. I need to buy a 600-24 range lens on the D85. Theoretically, you can choose from three: Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF, Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED VR and Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G IF- Ed. In practice, the latter suits me best (without VR) due to its smaller size, as it will be used in underwater boxing. And now the question itself: is its optical performance much worse (better) than the other two options? Or are they all the same for all three?

  • Ruslan

Well, all of your articles and reviews have been written with a soul, in the same spirit Arkady learned a lot from you =)))

  • Vadim

Cool staff. I recently bought myself a Nikon D600. Came to the store and tested it with Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S. To be honest, Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF has a more voluminous and lively picture. The flat picture Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S, especially for the money, did not like it at all. Question! Why overpay for what you can get from the older brother Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF? So I'm talking about the same thing ... The glass has excellent sharpness, scanty CA, plasticity of the picture, correct color rendition, beautiful artistic bokeh, a real 1: 2 macro mode, excellent constructive, fast focusing and other goodies. Never listen to those who write, that this lens is not intended for cameras with a matrix larger than 6-10-12 megapixels! On Nikon D600 this glass comes to life and reveals all its possibilities in its resolution! Don't believe me? Try it! On DX I don't recommend it, for this there are cropped Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 18-50. At full frame Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF is ideal for portraits, landscapes, architecture and macro.

    • Koba

Here is a respected Vadim drew attention to a very important thing about this lens - the volume of the image. Because of him, he keeps the price in the secondary market. The examples given here also confirm this. Personally, I have compared all these standard range lenses, zooms many times, and for myself I have identified two of them that give exactly a live image - one of them is this lens, and the other is 35-70 / 2.8D. The latter is generally a masterpiece, in my opinion. But this objevtiv is also famous for its demonically fast and tenacious autofocus, which is fully revealed on older cameras of the D3 type, in conjunction with them it is practically impossible to miss a frame, and you will not be able to get unsharp frames either. And the aperture one way or another allows you to separate the foreground from the background. The high price of this lens (in China, it costs at least $ 300 for a really excellent copy, a little less than 35-70 / 2.8, and on a par with the new 24-85 VR ...) /

For a crop without a screwdriver, which wide-angle do you recommend?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tokina 12-24 is very good :)

  • Tatyana

Arkady tell me how it will be on the d5100, I choose the lens for this camera. The maximum amount of money for this is about 800 dollars. I want something better as a regular one. I will be very grateful to you !!!!!!

    • Tatyana

... but I forgot to say. That with autofocus ... sorry)))

  • Tatyana

sorry again ... I was mistaken, autofocus is not there (((

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the crop, you need a trousers starting from 17-18mm, otherwise 24mm will be "narrow" in some cases.

  • Igor D

Arkady! Your knowledge and reviews inspire confidence among amateurs. A big request is to describe NIKKOR 24-85 f / 3.5-4.5mm G ED VR. I am going to pick up hryvnias and buy H 24-85 / 3.5-4.5 or T 28-75 / 2.8. Your opinion and comparison of these generalists.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Hello. If it comes to hand, I will try to do a review.

  • Jury

Arkady, how would you rate the Sigma 24-70mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG HSM as a staff member for the Nikon D80
(in the future - for D600)

  • Igor D

Recently I tried on N 24-85 / 3.5-4.5. Not a bad wagon. Only in the online store "Tsifrovichek" found them two different, with different prices. Compared - with different diameters for a filter of 67 and 72 mm and their length is different (by 10 mm). No more information. Does anyone know what the difference is?

  • Angela

I have Nikor 18-105; 50-1,8; 85-1,8, world 35 - 2 (it is difficult to work with a non-autofocus lens on reportage photography). I am thinking about purchasing a high-aperture reportage lens and cannot decide. After reading your review, I doubted this lens, since I have cropped Nikon 7000 and 90 cameras. Arkady, in your opinion, which lens should I take for reportage photography: Tamron - 17-50 or 28-75? Thank you very much in advance for your reply.

  • Anton

Hello! Arkady, what would you recommend to choose as a portrait zoom from:
    Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4
    Nikkor AF 37-70mm f / 2.8
    Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8

Arkady, where did you buy your tamron? In Russia?

  • Dmitriy

    Good afternoon!
I read lens reviews and purchased a Nikkor 24-85D 2.8-4 and ran into a problem:
normal clear photos are obtained with an aperture value of 5.6 or more. The vacation turned out without a beautiful blurring of the background :( At high-aperture values, regardless of the focal length, everything is soapy, indistinct, without sharpness. And with zooming, everything is completely horrible - soap and a point, even on closed holes.
    fotik Nikon D7000 (crop).
what is the problem?? Give advice where to go with this?

PS: I still have a 50mm 1.8 fix (for a full frame), the pictures are adequate from aperture 2.8.
was also zoom Tamfron 18-270 3.5-6.3 (for the crop) - everything was clear and beautiful with him.
