Many thanks for the opportunity to review the excellent full-frame zoom Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF Sergey Svirida. and the store www.fotika.com.ua.
Externally and functionally, the Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is very similar to its younger brother Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (1998 release). Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D was produced from 2000 to 2012. In 2012 the lens was replaced with a newer model - Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.
The name does not indicate a number of important lens parameters, for example Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4D IF has excellent 9 blade aperturewhich can create pleasing bokeh. Among similar lenses 9 blades aperture only have Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (predecessor and younger brother) and Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (+ its NON-D MKI version).
The lens weighs a little more than 500 grams. The optical scheme of the lens includes as much 15 elements in 11 groupsAt the same time, as many as 2 aspherical elements are included in the design. The diameter of the front filter is quite large, and is 72 mm.
The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses... Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D is one of the few lenses that has a red 'L' ('Lock') near the aperture lever.
Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D replaces older model Nikon 28-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor. The lens feature is macro option. The work in macro mode is rather strange, but effective. The lens has two modes of operation: Normal and Macro - modes are switched using the lever on the lens. In 'Normal' mode, the lens minimum focusing distance (MDF) is 50 cm.In 'Macro' mode, the MDF becomes 21 cm, while the lens can shoot at maximum 1: 2 magnification... This is a very good indicator for this kind of lens. In 'Macro' mode, autofocus even works, unlike, for example, Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKII), which is available only manual focus in macro mode.
Attention: the 'Macro' mode can only be enabled if the lens has a focal length of 35 to 85 mm. At 24mm 'Macro' will not turn on. Also, to exit the macro mode, you need to set the focusing distance greater than 50 cm, otherwise the switch will not budge.
Important: if the focusing ring moves between the MDF and 50 cm, it will not be possible to turn on the 'Normal' mode and unscrew the zoom by 24 mm. This is pretty annoying. But, despite the fact that the 'Macro' mode is implemented with some inconveniences and limitations, the benefits of it are quite significant. Personally, I am a big fan of taking pictures in my free time.
Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has incredibly fast focusing. Yes, this is a very fast focusing zoom lens. Fast focusing is most likely due to the fact that the focus ring rotates only 30 degrees (in Normal mode). The lens focuses almost instantly... In this case, the lens uses an internal type of focusing (the front lens does not rotate during zooming and focusing). For a non-motorized old man of 2000, this is a huge praise. Well, in the 'Macro' mode, the camera rotates the focusing ring for a rather long time to focus. I personally recommend working in 'Macro' mode with manual focus. You can ask any 'macro shooter' (macro photographer), and he will answer that manual focus mode is simply irreplaceable for macro photography.
Note: During autofocus, the focusing ring rotates and it sometimes interferes. The lens does not have a focus mode switch, therefore, you will need to turn autofocus on or off using the lever on the camera (located near the camera mount). There are now many lenses with M / A + Mthat do not rotate the focus ring during auto focus.
The lens is assembled quite solidly, but it feels like it is made of plastic. Of course, the mount is metal. The focus and zoom ring are rubberized. After several years of use, a slight backlash of the zoom system is felt, and also the elastic band of the zoom ring swells a little. Also included is a hood that can be installed backwards.
Rumor has it that lenses with serial numbers starting with '2' or '3' are less assembled and give poor image quality compared to lenses with serial numbers starting with '5'. Lenses with a serial number starting with a '5' have been produced since 2006.
It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself, to translate the lens into manual mode focus should put the camera in manual mode focusing using the switch located near the camera mount.
Image quality:
Don't rely on the f / 2.8 aperture. Firstly, it is available only at 24mm, and secondly, the image at F / 2.8 at the edges of the frame is quite soft. Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D has a distortion that is strongly barrel-shaped at 24mm and light pincushion at 85mm. Strong vignetting is noticeable at 24mm and f / 2.8. It's funny, but in the center the lens shows good sharpness, at 85 mm the sharpness in the center drops slightly. In general, the lens is not the sharpest at fully open apertures, but this cannot be called “soap”. At 85mm F4.0, you can get good portraits. Replacing is very strong at a wide angle. HA... Color reproduction is normal. The lens is afraid of backlight. In general, for a zoom lens, Nikon AF 24-85 / 2.8-4D shows normal picture quality... But here's a new, darker Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical Significantly better in terms of image quality.
Personal impressions
Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a very interesting option for an all-rounder with a 3.5X zoom for a full frame. In fact, it is one of the most popular native replacements for very expensive professional Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8GN ED и Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED). In fact, based on the aperture ratio, the Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF is the only replacement since its brother Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical already lost all the charm of f / 2.8 and macro mode. For cropped cameras Nikkor AF 24-85mm f / 2.8-4 D IF will greatly lose its versatility due to the wide angle, but it will also be suitable for a street reporting lens on Nikon DX cameras. If you are looking for such a lens, then there is a wonderful offer from Tamron in the face Tamron 28-75mm with excellent image quality and macro mode.

Conclusions
Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) is a good versatile full-frame zoom lens with a rather unusual aperture and the possibility of macro shooting. Lost in image quality to new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical.

Dyakuyu for the review) i vіtayu s day
thank you)
for nikon d3200 will come up ??
the d3200 does not have a built-in motor, so it works, but without autofocus.
Cool photos!!!
Congratulations on Photographer's Day :)
Thank you!
Arkady Lens NIKKOR 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED VR AF-S worth buying for photographing weddings and all that?
If for a full frame - then you might think, if for a crop - then it's not worth it.
Hello. I have a D5000, I wanted to purchase such a review, but apparently it will not work. Please advise which is better.
And then they answered you 4 years ago - tamron 28-75 or 17-50 / 2,8, svetlozums of the average price. After placing the first on 5100, she played better (ex. 18-105).
Thank you
Or is it better to buy Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F / 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Nikon
I would take Tamron.
Arkady know that you use two devices at once if you are shooting a wedding, which lenses do you use the most?
Tamron 17-50 2.8, Nikkor 50 1.4, Nikkor 85 1.8
A 85 tki not a lot on the crop for the wedding?
On a walk - just right, a matter of habit.
Thanks for the info.
Arkady! In the review in the first photo with the specified parameters (fence and greenery), the error is either focal not 85mm, or f / not 2.8 :))))))
I liked the review. I am looking closely at this glass for a wedding, but your advice made me think ... ..I have 50 f1.8D.
Yes, I deleted the error.
Dear Arkady!
In the review on the last line, you propose, as an alternative, consider Tamron 28-100mm (error)
Thanks. Corrected.
This link is still in error. Now she leads to a review of Tamron 28-200mm 1: 3.8-5.6 Macro AF Aspherical XR (IF)
Thank you for your attention. Refresh.
But have you ever come across a new lens from the Nikon-Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G IF-ED VR -if you come across, what can you say about it?
I did not come across, I can not say anything.
There is a tamron 17-50 2.8
I want to change it to nikkor 24-85 2.8-4
Sharpness does not happen?
That is, nikkor is as sharp as a tamron?
Well, not so accurate, but sharp enough.
That is, Nikkor will be worse in sharpness?
Understand correctly - these are completely different lenses and they have different sharpness in different parts of the image at different apertures and under different conditions, including with different matrix sizes.
Thank you, I understand that they are different.
I just feel better with 50-85
Than from 17-24
If you take the average value (under equal conditions), which lens will give a better picture.
Or are they both equally good?
Here is a sharpness chart for 17-50 on crop http://www.photozone.de/nikon–nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/290-tamron-af-17-50mm-f28-sp-xr-di-ii-ld-aspherical-if-nikon-test-report–review?start=1 and schedule 24-85 on crop http://www.photozone.de/nikon–nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/237-nikkor-af-24-85mm-f28-4-d-if-review–test-report?start=1
Thank you very much for your advice.
These charts have already been watched.
As far as I understand, they are almost identical in sharpness, with the exception of Tamron, who is not so sharp around the edges.
I didn’t want to be boring, but here I get one)
I reviewed a lot of photos and reviews on the network, that's why there are so many disagreements and wrote to you as a person holding these two lenses.
I’ll ask directly, on which lens do you like photographs more?
P.S. This is the last question)
I like it more from Tamron, and it’s easier and the angle is wider, I’ve been using it for more than a year now.
Thank you very much for your answers and patience)
Good afternoon, Arkady. Love the colors in your photos. If possible, tell me which color profile in JPEG you use. I have a NIKON D7000, in the comments you write that the photo is in JPEG. And yet, in your opinion, is there enough TAMRON 28-75 resolution for the NIKON D7000? Thanks for the answer.
In this case, mode VI (vivid) was used. In my opinion, the sharpness is enough for the D7000, especially on closed apertures.
Thanks. Good luck to you and your blog. I am quite an experienced photographer, but I always come to your site with interest.
Now completely scattered. Thought to buy 24-85 2.8-4 or 3.5-4.5 Now also Tamron 28-75. Advise which one to choose. D7000 camera
I would take Tamron 28-75, on 4.0 it will be a very good lens.
Yes, a good option. Personally, I use the slightly longer Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5D AF Nikkor
Arkady, the D7000 camera also thought about buying a 24-85mm f2,8-4D but reintroduced a 28-70mm f3.5-4.5D.
good advice do you think?
24mm wider for crop, this is critical. Therefore, it is better already 24-85
Arkady, please review the Nikon 16-85 f3.5-5.6 VR lens. Thank you so much for your work.
Well, if you fall into the hands, be sure to write a review.
Arkady good afternoon.
I myself have been using 24-85mm f2,8-4D on the D700 carcass for more than a year. The lens has a beautiful and plastic design. But sometimes not at the long end of the aperture, I would like more than F4. Trying on to Tamron 28-75 f2,8, but I did not like his colors, skinton, a feeling that people have Botkin's disease (jaundice). Although I shoot 90% in RAW (Nef, it’s still hard enough even to convert the converter to a natural complexion. For this reason I refused to buy it. What would you advise more (except for 24-70 nikkr (we have the price for them under 2t. $) and 28-70 nikkor (not really find))
I have a 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor, but for shooting sports, which I spend the most time on, they are uncomfortable working in terms of speed. There is a TV set too.
There are Tokins 28-80, 28-70, they are soft on the long end, but otherwise they are pretty good lenses.
These Tokins are also almost impossible to find, since they are no longer available. There is one used Tokina 28-80mm f / 2.8 AF Nikon F on sale, but it is full of dust inside. I don’t even know if it makes sense to take and open it to clean the windows? How is her picture? Will it really be better, or sewed on soap.
Thank you.
80mm is not the most successful lens, but many people like the soft drawing of Tokina.
PS I forgot to add, the price for it is $ 460. It is normal for her in this state or not at all.
Expensive.
Understood thanks.
And what is the average price for them for used ones, so that if they slip, they will be guided.
I am not an assistant in pricing, I don’t know.

here you can look at the prices of Tokin 28-70 2.8
I’m going to take it myself
Good afternoon, Arkady. Happy New Year ! What beautiful colors you have in the photo, I often go to the site just to admire, to please the eye. And yet: will the TAMRON 28-75 pull the NIKON D7000 matrix? This range of focal points is needed. From 50mm I bought a chic SIGMA 50-150 / 2.8 OS lens. And now I’m tormented, I don’t want worse quality, but the money ran out (temporarily). So, in your opinion, it is more useful to take TAMRON 28-75 or NIKON 24-85. I apologize for repeating the question. It needs a zoom. Thanks.
I would take Tamron, on the same diaphragms it will be sharper than Nikkor.
