For the opportunity to review the rare Telemar-22 lens, many thanks to Alexander from the manual optics section
TTX of the Telemar-22 lens
- Focal length: 200mm
- Aperture: F / 5.6-f / 22.0
- Weight: about 500g
- Number of aperture blades: 12 pieces
- Front Filter Diameter: 49mm
- Optical design: 4 elements in 3 groups
- MDF: 2.5m
- Landing thread: M39
The lens is made in a white version of the frame, because it looks very unusual on a modern black digital-mirror camera.
The lens is somewhat similar in appearance to the old samples of Tair-11A and Jupiter-11. The Telemar-22 lens was produced in various modifications: there is a Telemar-22A lens with an interchangeable shank, Telemar-22 in a metal frame and Telemar-22 in a classic black case. The black version of the lens also exists in two versions with a modified design of the focus rings and aperture.
The lens has a rather rare Telemar optical design. Although it has 4 elements in 3 groups, it should not be confused with the optical design of Jupiter, Tair, Tessar (Industar). The Telemar-2 and Telemar-17 lenses, possibly other Telemars, have the exact same optical design.
The main features of the Telemar-22 lens (white, metal, M39 thread of the Krasnogorsk plant)
- Telemar-22 is lightweight. The light weight of the telephoto only interferes with handheld shooting, but allows you to transport it without problems.
- The lens is small aperture. Typically, manual fix lenses are interesting for their aperture ratios, but Telemara-22 has a maximum aperture of only F5.6. For example, the same ancient Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q aperture 2 times more. Because Telemar-22 was replaced by Jupiter-21A. For example, even my zoom Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkorhas a big aperture F5.3 at 200mm.
- Telemar-22 has two aperture control rings. One is for setting the value, the other is for preview. It is very convenient to aim at a fully open aperture, and to take a picture at the desired value when you sharply close the aperture with your hand. Aperture control is very convenient.
- Focusing on the lens is very smooth. The focus ring can be rotated 360 degrees for very smooth focusing. This is very important when working with a non-autofocus lens. When focusing from infinity to MDF, the lens extends its trunk 2-3 cm forward. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, which allows you to use all kinds of filters without problems. A serious drawback of the lens is a very large MDF (minimum focusing distance), which is as much as 2.5 meters. Even to take off the flowers, I constantly had to step back to fit into 2.5 meters. It is very unusual after my Jupiter-37A with its 1.2m to shoot with Telemar-22.
- The lens can work without problems with full-frame cameras. On crop (on APS-C cameras) EGF for Nikon DX it will be 300mm, for Canon APS-C 1.6x it will be 320mm. Manage with such a big EGF not always easy, I advise you to read my article how take off.
- The lens is coated, the filter diameter is not quite standard - only 49mm.
- And most importantly, the number of diaphragm blades is 12. When the aperture is closed, the lens forms round glowing spots in the out-of-focus area, thereby providing good bokeh, which is very important, for example, for portraits. The petals are blackened, matte, do not give unnecessary reflections. Jupiter-37A has the same number of petals. But in Jupiter-21A, which came to replace Telemar-22, the number of petals has already been cut to 10 pieces.
Image quality.
I can only judge image quality on my APS-C camera. The lens forms a mediocre image with poor contrast, quite strong HA (as for fix) and medium sharpness. The sharpness increases when the aperture is closed. At F8.0, sharpness is good. Perhaps I came across not the most successful specimen in terms of sharpness. The only pluses in the image are: the absence of distortion and vignetting, as well as a pleasant bokeh pattern. Personally, I like the drawing of the "Sonnar" optical scheme (Jupiter, Sonnar) more.
Sample photos.
All photos taken on Nikon D200 and Telemar-22 in RAW format. Since the lens is not friendly with side light and has poor contrast, all the photos went through auto level adjustment without any other modifications. Reduced size to 1920 * 1080 pixels, imprinted data EXIF.
How to use with modern cameras?
Lenses with an M39 mounting thread (for SLR cameras, M39 X 1 / 45.2), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this you just need to choose correct adapter. The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com.
For use on modern digital SLR cameras Canon EOS need M39-Canon EOS adapter, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) here. Also, an adapter M39-Canon EOS can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Canon EOS + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any Canon EOS cameras will find here.
An adapter is required for use on Nikon SLR cameras M39-Nikon F, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) without a lens and a chip here. Also, one adapter M39-Nikon F can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Nikon F + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any modern Nikon cameras will find here.
How to use this lens with cameras of other systems (Pentax, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sigma etc.) - ask in the comments and you will be prompted. If you have any questions on compatibility and adapters, ask in the comments (comments do not require any registration at all, any user can add a comment).
Personal impressions.
The lens has a very very unusual metallic vintage look with many rings. It seems that the camera is not one lens, but a whole bunch. Most likely I have not the sharpest instance, because the impressions of its use are not the most positive. True, a convenient focuser and the fact that the lens is very many years old, and it works, makes us respect him. I almost had no difficulty with aiming at infinity, since the lens, even when used on Nikon using a lensless adapter, can focus up to 20-30 meters.
Catalog modern brand lenses 'Zenitar' и 'Helios' can look at this link.

Conclusions:
Telemar-22 is a rare prime telephoto lens. The lens boasts its vintage look and pleasing 12-blade aperture pattern. It is inferior in a number of indicators to the Jupiter-21 lens.
Material prepared Arkady Shapoval.
Skoda, I won’t get to the photo forum, can you please marvel at your video recording here?
Probably yes.
Cool review! I never heard of such a lens!)
He is very rare. The price of a lens in good condition starts at $ 100. Excellent costs about 130. Interesting and rare glass. The quality is excellent! Minus - aperture. But it draws perfectly. This is an art television set not for everyone. Bokeh gives even at 8f.
do not tell, this is a massive and cheap glass
An excerpt from the highly authoritative description of Telemar 22:
Telemar-22 200 mm f / 5.6 is a telephoto prime lens for 35 mm SLR cameras with an M42 attachment thread.
Interchangeable telephoto lens with coated optics. Produced in a frame with a pre-installed aperture limiter. Rare enough. "
This is the question of how massive and cheap it is.
Hello! Are you good at lenses? Can you help me give an assessment?
Telemar 22 A 1973 Lens
New, Box and Documents.
Telemar 22A No. 000YYY, black, Latin, sharp with D8, available one day so far, unsubscribe after comparing with the telear.
it means that black is sharp with 5,6, although in sharpness it loses to 80-200. Art? Well, maybe so.
White Telemar is beautiful on simply “Zenith”, but it loses a little to black, to see enlightenment is not that.
In addition to the listed mounts, there is also a Pentacon Six, I myself was holding it in my hands.
I will sell 5 pieces or exchange for something worthwhile
how much will you sell? What is the condition of the lenses (can you send a photo by mail)? where do you live? (shipment is possible) ... need one for yourself (photo hobby)
"When focusing, the front lens rotates" - typo
I collect manuals. The telemar 22 lens looks very nice on any carcass. But it did not show itself well as an optical device. Therefore, it took a place on the windowsill, for the place of the flower pot.
Hello everyone! Telemar 22 A, a great lens, though I have an export version, sharp even on an open aperture, it holds back light very well. I shot on Sony 7

Good day! Help me please. I have an Olimpus E-420. And there is the Krasnogorsk Telemar-22A lens, 5,6 / 200, 000072. Which adapter do I need to purchase. Thanks!
M39-4 / 3. Perhaps this: http://ali.pub/2i9mw9
Very dark, terrible lens. They almost did not buy because they are rare.
Therefore, I bought not Telemar 22 (5.6 / 200), but Telear N (3.5 / 200)
If anyone is interested, in Gomel it sells for ~ $ 75, apparently the new Telemar-22A https://www.kufar.by/item/82528431
If anyone is interested. Crimea Kerch. There is one available. Posted on Avito.
In terms of weight - focus length, he probably wins. And aperture for the landscape is not so important. For long sightseeing trips on foot. Jupiter 37 is also light, but 135 mm.
Hello! Maybe someone can help. When you close the aperture, a whitish haze (veil) appears in the center. This applies to any shooting direction. Even without backlight. In the open it seems to be ok. It paints a beautiful picture, but this bug ruins everything. Is it possible to cure it somehow?
From the first pictures I fell in love with this wonder. Despite the fact that it is dark.
The contribution of light scattering relative to the main flow increases as the main flow is limited by the diaphragm. Matte everything between the lenses and behind the rear lens. You can apply soot (spray).
Thank you. Although I would like to try Jupiter-11 (39 thread) or even Tair-11. The picture should be even more interesting. Judging by the reviews. And sharpness in artistic work is unnecessary. The price is of course, but if the soul asks, you can move the toad. :)
I recommend taking Jupiter-11 under Contax RF, converted to M42 or other desired system. It is very light, compact, comfortable and pleasant. I had this for quite a long time, it’s not difficult to adapt. Was satisfied. Another good option is Jupiter-11A.
Tair-11 is preferable to white, but keep in mind that it is noticeably soapier than Jupiter-37 or Jupiter-11, it has more chromatism and lower contrast. And, of course, Tair is much more expensive than Jupiter-11/37.
Understood and accepted. Soap is expensive - this is definitely not necessary. Then, of course, Jupiter-11. It is similar in shape to my Telemarchik and in the picture on the Yu-37 (judging by reviews and reviews).
Wonderful site! How much have I learned from here... And it all started simply with the choice of Helios-44.
Thank you very much for being here!
