Nikon Nikkor AF 35-70 F / 3.3-4.5 MKI

Basic important information on the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI)

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 - a lens from film cameras, quite old. In fact, this is the autofocus version of the earlier Nikon 35-70mm f / 3.3-4.5 Zoom-Nikkor AI-S MF... Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 does not have the designation “D“, which means it does not transmit the focusing distance to the camera. This can make it difficult to shoot with flash. The lens is suitable for modern full-frame cameras. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will fit 52.5-105mm.
  2. Autofocus is fastfaster than many modern SWM lenses. True, when focusing, the front lens rotates and extends. The manual focus ring is very narrow and uncomfortable. The focus ring rotates approximately 90 degrees.
  3. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.
  4. The lens mount is metallic. The lens itself is made in Japan. The build quality is good and does not cause any complaints (except for the focus ring). The zoom ring is rubberized.
  5. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 very compact... Even when zoomed, the lens hardly changes its size. When the focal length is changed, the retractable barrel of the lens barrel moves in a wave-like manner, from 35 to 50 mm it is pulled inward, and from 50 to 70 mm it moves out.
  6. The lens has a pretty nice maximum aperture F / 3.3-F / 4.5. For example, lenses of this level usually have aperture range from F / 3.5 to F / 5.6. In theory, f / 3.3 is 3.5 times lighter than f / 1.25, and f / 4.5 is 5.6 times lighter than f / 1.55.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Image quality

Surprisingly, the lens showed good image quality. True, the lens suffers strong HA at apertures up to F / 8.0, but good sharpness is already present at fully open apertures. The lens gives blooming (ghosting on very contrasting objects). But at the same time, the lens has very little distortion and nice pattern. 70 mm bokeh and F / 4.5 are very good, even unexpectedly good for a lens of this class. On the FX camera, the vignette is maintained at 35 mm up to F / 5.6. The contrast of the lens gives an average, the color of the image is slightly shifted to warm colors. The lens normally transfers side and backlight, but there are situations when you can catch a couple of glare.

Personal experience

The lens is indeed very compact. I shot them at an open-air festival and he proved to be a good street reporter. The lens is very fast in focusing and can be an interesting gag for full-frame cameras. Everything else Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI) has a very good price / quality ratio. It's a shame that on Nikon DX cameras the lens loses its ability to use a fairly wide angle of view. At one time, I wanted to take the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI) as a spare lens just in case of firefighting - it can be easily carried in a backpack.

Old Kenny recorded it (and its previous and subsequent versions) in list of worst Nikon Nikorr lenses of all timebut I strongly disagree with him.

Comments: 110, on the topic: Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI)

  • Arkady USA

From old AF Nikon cameras switched to the d50. In stock NIKKOR: 24-85 / 2.8-4macro. 35-70 / 3.3-4.5, 70-210 // 4-5.6; 70-300 / 4-5.6 + Quantaray 18-200 / 3.5-6.3OS; Tamron 28-105 / 4-5.6. I am an amateur with great experience, but I can’t decide for myself which ones to sell and which to leave, but no more than three. I rent family celebrations, portraits, flowers, landscapes, macro. I will be very happy and grateful for the professional advice.

  • Vladimir SH

I took myself such a D200 perfectly, in a cool condition, as a staffer for walking just right) thanks for the reviews, it’s only from them that I determine which is better to buy

  • Artem

Arkady in your review, the first version of this lens is presented, but there is at least one more. In the second version, the focus ring is wider and rubberized. What do you think is the best version to take? D700 camera. I will buy at auction.

  • Denis

I use in conjunction with the D80. The picture quality is excellent, the pictures are sharp in good sunny weather. Of course, indoors, in principle, like most lenses.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, tell me please. Is it normal that on the nikkor d7000 it’s not possible to open the aperture from the carcass more than 4,2? on the whole segment of focal?

    • Vladimir

      sorry nikon d7000 of course

      • Valery

You must first set the largest aperture value on the lens itself - 22

  • Valery

After tomorrow they will bring me this lens))) I’ll test, I will write my opinion about it!
In general, the reviews here are very good. Before buying something, I definitely look here)

  • anonym

on d 90 will be norms pratsyuvati ???

    • Valery

On D90 praciuє vіdmіnno! Н Inkoli don’t fall into focus (rarely), in the mysterious I am a blow of delights!

  • anonym

To switch to the automatic mode of apertures, you must not only set the value “22” but also close the “latch”. I just tried it ;-)

  • Kate

and autofocus will work on d3100?

  • anonym

How much is it now? And where can I buy it?

  • Ekaterina

Hello! Thank you so much for your site, I read and learned a lot of information for myself here. Now the question has arisen about the purchase of Nikon D7100. I have such a lens, I got it with the F90 almost for nothing. How do you think it will work with the 7100? In general, what lens do you recommend for the 7100? There are whale 18-135, 50 1.4, and this one is 35-70. Does it make sense to buy 35 1.8?

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is nothing to think about, it is a well-known fact that this lens will work with this camera. The lens should be advised going beyond any requirements.

  • Ekaterina

Arkady, thanks for the answer. I shoot architecture and landscapes on my travels, mostly. Before that, the whale was coping with its tasks, but for the 7100 I plan to make a replacement for it. Focal lengths most often used are from 18 to 50, sometimes, but rarely 100 (equivalent to 27-75, 150). In thought, because the budget allows you to take at the moment only the 7100 and 35 / 1,8 cameras.

  • Petro

I have such a lens, it’s for sale, I want 750 UAH; it has a passport visually and mechanically in order; however, it is screwed to the Nikon F601 camera (the camera is included in the price, I’m just not in the picture, I’m not even an amateur) Made in Japan. hp2490b@gmail.com soap. Dear topic starter and moderator, if you wrote in the wrong place, please transfer where necessary, thank you. Yes, there are 70-210 4-5,6 in the box, the native price is 1700, the ideal condition is cheaper together !!!

  • Jury

Dear Radozhuva! I am newbie . I bought a D3100 Body, I took the device for shooting things (online store), on mannequins of half height and full height. I need clear and beautiful shots. Please tell me as a beginner what kind of optics should I get? I’ll shoot indoors (there’s not much light). thanks

  • Artem

Please share your advice. I took a used nikon d200 for myself, there was 800 UAH left. In stock, there is a choice of Helios 81N 50mm 2.0 for 500 UAH. and af nikkor 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 for 700 UAH. what to choose?

    • Alexander Malyaev

If there are no other lenses, then definitely a zoom. I'm not sure what exactly this one, but the zoom is needed. And shooting with a fast prime without autofocus is not so easy. This is then possible, for the soul.

      • Artem

Thanks for the advice, I’ll take it into account. Tell me, the price is 700 UAH. normal for this zoom?

        • Alexander Malyaev

It's hard for me to judge from Russia. We have a price for this lens from 923 hryvnia. You no longer need to look at the price, but you need to look at the condition of the glass: how the mechanics work (backlash, jamming, diaphragm, AF), if there is a fungus on internal lenses, dust, scratches / scuffs, etc. The lens pricing fork can be up to 3 times depending on the condition of the glass and the wishes of the seller. If after purchase it is not possible to return the lens, then you need to take the carcass and thoroughly check everything in place. It takes me 10-15 minutes to check.

          • Artem

            Thank you!

  • Artem

Thanks for the advice, I’ll take it into account. Tell me, the price is 700 UAH. normal for this zoom?

  • Crocodile.

By and large, I chose what to drown out the bayonet for only. That bought nikon. I bought the inscription made in Japan for the price of 15 dollars and a new condition. Theoretically, it seemed that something would be better (already the classics) 18-55. He got wrong many times steeper. For me, the first value is soft. Sharpness is also enough with a margin if you pile up. Wonderful not oily, not rattling background. You can make a miracle of portraits. There are enough minuses and software and bridles and a little bit of color to add ... .. but this is a staff .... 18-55 when installed I am haunted irreversibly by the feeling that I am shooting on industrial. this inspires confidence. AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 This is an LENS with its pluses and minuses. Someone will fall in love with it. As often, religion will not allow.

    • Ivan

I did not understand. Which is better?

    1) my specimen had a shift in blue-green tones
    2) Yellow, even ocher
    3) the picture was taken to red
really loved this glass. sold only iz for 35-70 / 2,8

  • zinander

Soft but harsh. Today I got it to a better time, since I sold my crop, but I’m not pulling the 610th with glass yet. But, it is worth noting, they do not pay attention to him, they take him for a soap dish. He stood, stared at people, but they did not even smile. Emanciphe self-girls and with monopods scurry back and forth, people are already corrupted by technology. But we (urban lunatics with a desire to catch a bird, we won’t be without bread: to learn how to catch a bird, you need 10-12 years. I like 35-70. True, at 610 it looks non-ergonomic. But this is what you need, you can even emphasize this moment. In general, nothing is glass (is it not plastic?)

  • Eugene

Hello, Arkady! Please tell me, is it not a big backlash of the "trunk" - is this the norm for this lens or is it a technical defect? On my copy, it wobbles slightly on the sides, although the lens looks like new. And another question: what is the real benefit of its 3,3 aperture when the aperture must be closed at least to 8 in order to reduce the CA level. To be honest, I have not yet been able to answer this question for myself, I am taking a photo at 8 and higher to get a more or less high-quality picture, but needless to say that in the absence of sufficient illumination, problems begin. Thank you in advance for your reply

  • Valery

I am very pleased with this lens - for a little money, sharp and reliable glass, with a good design. But among the old lenses there is a very wide variation in quality, so you definitely need to check before buying (in my case, only the second instance bought was at the level, and the first one was soft at all the focal ones, although it looked like new)

  • Vladimir

Tell me, I got this lens, I checked everything fine, the only smooth goes 50-70, 50-35 tighter, 35 is closer - tight, apparently they did not use it in practice, or is it like that for everyone (which I strongly doubt)? And another question, what is the average price for a Nikon 200mm f / 4 NIKKOR-Q? How much does it cost to take it (naturally, in a normal state, maybe not in a new state), and is it worth it at all, maybe there is something better, but I lost sight of it?

  • Kiss

Hello everyone :) I have a question: I installed Nikkor 35-70mm f / 3.3-4.5 on the Nikon D700 and get a glare on the closed aperture (22), the exposure on the open aperture is ok. On old manual lenses, such problems are not observed)))

  • Murzik

It's time to change the screen saver on the screen. I’ll probably take this maple leaf in the grass. I really liked it! :)

    • Valery A.

Infected, set - too motley. But the sky with the clouds below is the most beautiful thing. Thanks to Arkady.

My countryman and namesake, hello dear! I need your valuable advice. Through the adapter for D90, which of the two is better MINOLTA MD 50 / 1.4 or MINOLTA MD ROCKOR x 50 / 1.4 ??? The question is not simple. Answer if you can on my eMail. I can buy both, but I can’t sell, and there is no return. Please note that I have NIKON SERIES E. 50 / 1.8. Thanks.
