The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 lens is very small, compact and lightweight. It's even shorter in size than a whale lens Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor.

Nikon Nikkor AF 35-70 F / 3.3-4.5 MKI

Basic important information on the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI)

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 - a lens from film cameras, quite old. In fact, this is the autofocus version of the earlier Nikon 35-70mm f / 3.3-4.5 Zoom-Nikkor AI-S MF... Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 does not have the designation “D“, which means it does not transmit the focusing distance to the camera. This can make it difficult to shoot with flash. The lens is suitable for modern full-frame cameras. On Nikon DX cropped cameras EGF lens will fit 52.5-105mm.
  2. Autofocus is fastfaster than many modern SWM lenses. True, when focusing, the front lens rotates and extends. The manual focus ring is very narrow and uncomfortable. The focus ring rotates approximately 90 degrees.
  3. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 22 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 3.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 are plotted on it, it is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers.
  4. The lens mount is metallic. The lens itself is made in Japan. The build quality is good and does not cause any complaints (except for the focus ring). The zoom ring is rubberized.
  5. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 very compact... Even when zoomed, the lens hardly changes its size. When the focal length is changed, the retractable barrel of the lens barrel moves in a wave-like manner, from 35 to 50 mm it is pulled inward, and from 50 to 70 mm it moves out.
  6. The lens has a pretty nice maximum aperture F / 3.3-F / 4.5. For example, lenses of this level usually have aperture range from F / 3.5 to F / 5.6. In theory, f / 3.3 is 3.5 times lighter than f / 1.25, and f / 4.5 is 5.6 times lighter than f / 1.55.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Image quality

Surprisingly, the lens showed good image quality. True, the lens suffers strong HA at apertures up to F / 8.0, but good sharpness is already present at fully open apertures. The lens gives blooming (ghosting on very contrasting objects). But at the same time, the lens has very little distortion and nice pattern. 70 mm bokeh and F / 4.5 are very good, even unexpectedly good for a lens of this class. On the FX camera, the vignette is maintained at 35 mm up to F / 5.6. The contrast of the lens gives an average, the color of the image is slightly shifted to warm colors. The lens normally transfers side and backlight, but there are situations when you can catch a couple of glare.

Personal experience

The lens is indeed very compact. I shot them at an open-air festival and he proved to be a good street reporter. The lens is very fast in focusing and can be an interesting gag for full-frame cameras. Everything else Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI) has a very good price / quality ratio. It's a shame that on Nikon DX cameras the lens loses its ability to use a fairly wide angle of view. At one time, I wanted to take the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 (MKI) as a spare lens just in case of firefighting - it can be easily carried in a backpack.

Old Kenny recorded it (and its previous and subsequent versions) in list of worst Nikon Nikorr lenses of all timebut I strongly disagree with him.

  • Sergei

    Bokeh is very cool

  • The

    Class !!!
The last photo is just super !!!

    • VLADIMIR

I agree. Cool photo. In general, I noticed the author’s ability to see beautiful in everyday life, very nice work both in color and in plot, I like to visit this site from time to time

  • Anatoly

Hello! Tell me the price of 500 UAH for him is normal? (offer)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It’s quite normal.

  • Markusha

The question is - put this lens, everything works - both AF and exposure metering - there is only one strange bug - when shooting in modes M, S, A, P, this thing happens - the frame is taken - and the device does not respond to control - any attempt to change shutter speed or aperture does not change. However, when you turn the wheel that turns on the device, that is, I turn on the rear display, everything is “defrosted” and starts working again. I make a shot - again everything is “frozen”.
The question is, does it have any function on my device that is responsible for this? Maybe I accidentally set something wrong in the settings, or is it treated by flushing contacts or the bug is incurable?
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

What camera? Usually, the exposure meter is active for some time, after which the indication disappears until the shutter button is pressed halfway. In this mode, with P, A, S, M, changing parameters is not available. After lightly pressing the shutter button, the exposure metering turns on and you can change the shutter speed and aperture.

  • Markusha

    Camera D-90.
The display does not just disappear, but there are values that are relevant at the time of the previous frame and they are not changed by either the front or rear wheels ...
    If I get you right:
That is, after the frame, take and press the button halfway? Now I will try and report ...
Yes! Pressing the shutter button halfway releases the wheels and it all works.
That is, if I shoot, for example, a fountain, and I want to take two pictures - the first at a long exposure to show the blurring of the jets and the second - at a short exposure so that - well, it doesn't matter what ... then after the first frame I need to half-press the shutter button and then I can change the exposure?
If this is the norm, well, then we will take it into account in shooting ...
Thanks again - and not just for this specific answer ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

The instructions for the D90, on page 35, are written for this problem. It is treated exactly as I wrote. Also, you can increase the operating time of the exposure meter, which will avoid this kind of inconvenience. And yet, I added a photo on FF to the review.

  • Markusha

Interesting lens…. I made a couple of shots of a friend in the shade of a tree - wonderful bokeh!

  • Alex

thank you very much, it's good when there are guys like that ... so I was offered this glass, I have to take it if they didn't hammer nails of course, thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

      not at all

  • Paul

Hello Arkady, thank you very much for your work. A couple of questions:
    - as far as I understand it will be impossible to focus with the rangefinder in the viewfinder (by the green point) on this lens?
    - is there any point in buying this lens in the presence of 18-55 and 55-200 as a little faster than 18-55, or is it more relevant to take care of the flash?
Shooting mainly on the street, more often in the evening, ISO I try not to use more than 800. Camera D3100.
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. The rangefinder will work, the lack of transmission of the focus distance affects only the exposure with the flash, it does not affect the rangefinder.
      2. I don’t see much sense.

      • Paul

Thanks a lot for your answer. What do you think about Lensbaby lenses?

        • Arkady Shapoval

I didn’t hold it in my hands, I think it’s worth attention.

  • Jury

Hello Arkady, thank you very much for this review and for your work. There are many different reviews and sites, but the way you are more clear to the novice user is that no one writes. It’s a pity that I’m not in Kiev; I would give you all my manual optics for testing. After reading this review, I decided to get this lens, especially since 500 UAH is not money, I just really want to try it (I didn’t like the whale and I sold it). And thanks to your forum, I got hooked on Nikon, although I use alpha (I have left them for now), I decided to take the D200 for a start and I liked it.
In short, BIG Thank you !!!! Continue your useful work and good luck in everything.
    Regards, Yuri

    • Arkady Shapoval

I will try. If you like the Radozhiv website, then do not forget about the simple help to the project.

      • Jury

It’s not difficult to press a button at all.

  • Markusha

Largely thanks to this article, I acquired this lens (paired with an autofocus 70-210 4-5,6, which cost me a little more than $ 200 for both in perfect condition).
The lens is really comfortable, the only thing that bothers me a bit is that I don’t have enough sharpness. What can it be- the lens itself is shot down or does the new D-90 carcass require adjustment?
Or am I jerking when shooting? How to know the reason?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If there is at least one sharp photo, then the reason is not in the photos. Perhaps the article on how to take pictures with hands will help you.

  • Vika

Is it worth taking this lens on a Nikon D5000 if I have a whale and Helios 81H 2/50? if so, why?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not worth it, firstly, the automatic focusing on the Nikon D5000 will not work, secondly, 18-55 almost completely covers 35-70mm, 15mm the difference is not worth the money.

  • Vika

does it mean to stop at the Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D AF-S?

  • Alexander

selling such a lens in excellent condition for the price write to the mail sensei408@mail.ru

Tell me please, how will he behave on Fuji Fain Pix s5pro ?? I found this for 500 UAH whether it will be better than 18-55vr dh ??? What kind of KTU bag better to take from them ?? I want to photograph portraits mainly 2-3 people.

  • Dmitriy

I wrote this about Fuji and Noya Obkiiva. Vosnovnob I will photograph during the day or at night when breathing

  • Lydia

Good afternoon, tell me, otherwise I'm completely confused. Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm f / 3.3-4.5 how will it behave with d90, because all I found about 35-70 is that it is what you need on the film, but for the figure it is rare g ... According to your photos, I so I can't say, I'm not one of those who bend under a super sharp picture and compare photos of brick walls. I just don't fully understand what may not suit me in this lens. As a student, I don't have the opportunity to buy something else, but I really want a focal 35. I'm in deep thought, because second-hand is offered for 500 UAH, I don't want to throw it away. Thanks.

    • Stanislas

Think interesting ... the film is good ... and the figure is ... but ... and what is the difference? The author, in my opinion, clearly described its characteristics .... Good bokeh plus it ... and everything, in principle, nothing supernatural in the lens, but not at all ... but as you put it. I took it, I like it, I don't even see chromaticity ...

  • Dmitriy

Lydia, I went to see this lens, I checked it on fujike c5pro by the way, I really wanted to buy it because they write that it is better than the whale18-55 and the luminosity is brighter than 28-80 - in general, the lens is terrible, albeit new, under the filter, the bokeh is generally kapets, the focus is blurry, the picture is not sharp at all, I was 18-55 with a stob so it is much better !!! I was seduced because they sell him out for 700 = 900 UAH and the man wanted 400 for him (urgently) do not take it in any case !!!!

    • Oleg

Well, apparently, it was not for nothing that this copy was given at half price, probably, it was simply faulty.

  • Oleg

They offer this for 750 UAH in a new state, I think to take it on the D90 in addition to 70-210 / 4-5,6 from the same series “without D”. I can do without a wide angle, for six months I went with a fifty-kopeck piece on a crop, and that's okay. I shoot mostly on the street, sometimes in the studio. What do you think?

  • Victor

There seems to be no difference in the optical design between manual and manual. But in your comments on the lens, everything is not so clear. So are they the same or not? Generally rushing between the two autofocus versions. And it is precisely their differences that interest.

  • Jury

Well done Arkady! Very helpful article.
Please advise the amateur with Nikon D800E which volume is from 35 to 135 within 15000 rubles? I like to shoot flowers and landscape and portraits.
    Thanks in advance.

    • Stanislas

Arkady writes all the advice in his reviews, read it and think for yourself ... yes, and the Yandex market is also to help ... a lot of reviews

  • anonym

I will sell such a lens in Kharkov.

  • Alexey

I took it as universal. Nice glass. Fast autofocus, it’s good to shoot children and in general on the street. It gives a very good picture (it is advisable to focus on individual points, rather than in multifocus mode). Everything is practically what the review confirmed on Fuji s5. Very little difficulty with the backlight, but there only a hood or legs will save.

  • Valerman

    Hello Arkady!

I need your advice regarding this lens.
I am offered to change my fix a fifty-fifty 1,4D screwdriver for this lens with an extra charge of 4,5 tr.
I practically do not use my 50 / 1,4, because it’s very difficult for them to catch sharpness in an open hole. I basically shoot everything with a tamron 17-55 / 2,8
What do you think, is it worth changing or just putting it up for sale, say, thousands for 8?
    Thank you!

  • Ruslan

Good afternoon, Arkady. I'm a beginner, I have a question for you - can you tell me if it is worth taking AF Nikon Nikkor 35-70mm 1: 3.3-4.5 if you have a kit 18-55 I have a Nikon D3100?

  • alexey

screwdriver lens in d3100 there are no screwdrivers
