There are at least two modifications to the lens barrel with red-yellow markings and red-green markings for indicators. I first came across the Revuenon brand, there is very little information on its history.

The lens is well shot. Like most old lenses, the body is made of metal alloy. The design is only iron and glass. The focus ring is rubberized with hard rubber (most likely plastic).

The depth of field indicator has a scale for all aperture values, up to 2.8, and the depth of field is quite large. By the way, if the depth of field is important, then a specialized lens Jupiter 38 DOF for 75mm is just gorgeous.

The lens does not have multi-enlightenment. Auto Revuenon 35mm 1: 2.8 from film cameras, therefore, it can be used without problems on modern full-frame digital SLR cameras.

The lens has a diaphragm control mode switch, which allows you to manually control the diaphragm in M ​​mode, and in semiautomatic mode to control the diaphragm in A, aiming for sharpness with the hole fully open. It is very convenient to use a lens in M ​​mode on modern central control axles, since all modern central control axes do not have a diaphragm pusher for old lenses with an M42 mounting thread.

Diameter of the front filter: 55mm. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, travels half a centimeter forward. It's nice to focus, the focus ring moves about 270 degrees. Focusing on the lens is real, very nice, the focus ring goes very smoothly.

The lens has a good maximum aperture F2.8 which will help take pictures with hand. But for a fixed lens, a higher aperture value is also possible. For example, the Soviet Mir-24N has a maximum value of F2.0 at the same 35mm focal length, which is 2 times better than F2.8. Modern wide-angle lenses have reached the F1.4 aperture, but their price bites a lot.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?

Image quality

The picture at F2.8 is sharp, acceptable, but not very pleasant even in the center, the corners of the image are soft (and this is on the crop). But there are many examples of lenses and much worse. Excellent sharpness starts after F4.0-F11.0. On my cropped matrix after F11.0 the image loses its sharpness due to diffraction. The F22 aperture is almost non-working for sharp shots. The lens has nice bokeh for a 35mm lens. Color reproduction is normal. Distortion on my cropped camera (which takes only the center of the image projected by the lens) is negligible. Vignetting even at 2.8 on the crop is invisible. When the diaphragms are closed, the classic “nuts” are formed in the blur zone. Overall, the overall look of the image is pretty decent due to the nice drawing.

All photos were taken on Nikon D200 and Auto Revuenon 35mm 1: 2.8 to RAW, conversion to JPEG using Lightroom at 100% quality and auto levels. To save space on my hosting, I reduced the size of the images to 1600*1200 pixels. Each photo is imprinted with data about the main shooting settings from EXIF. All filmed in automatic mode white balance.

Personal impressions

The lens turned out better than I expected. It’s a pity that on my camera you can’t see the entire “breadth” of the lens. In general, I do not recommend wide-angle lenses on modern cropped cameras, as they turn into something incomprehensible with EGF at 40-60mm, which does not give the desired wide angle. If you are looking for a similar lens specifically on Nikon, then look towards the “native” MS MIR-24N 35mm F2.0, which has a much greater aperture and good quality indicators. For other systems, you can choose good options 35mm wide-angle.

Conclusions:

Auto Revuenon 35mm 2.8  proved to be a good fast lens with a nice picture, but not sharp enough on open apertures.

      You can use the same Mir-24N with an adapter. For crop I do not recommend using Soviet 35mm wide. It is for a wide angle that you need to look in the direction of 20mm and below, but there are very few available lenses, for example Mir-73n.

    Became the owner of this, only not “Auto”, but “Special”. Unlike in the review, the focusing ring is metallic and there is no auto-manual switching. Compared with Helios 44-2. I did not notice the difference in clarity in the portraits on the Canon 600D. Maybe if you shoot landscapes, then the clarity is really not enough for the hero of this review. Helios von washes more, but in Revuenon the angle is wider, which can sometimes come in handy. In general, I shoot video more, and the definition of this instance is quite enough for Full HD. Initially, I looked closely at Mir1, because I wanted something wider than Helios, but I got this one at the price of the world, if not cheaper, and I'm generally satisfied.

    Guest: MC MIR-24N 35mm F2.0 I had. Filmed on D200 and I can say for sure - bullshit, which the light has not seen. More or less takes off normally if you shoot almost tight, i.e. the closer, the better. I simply do not advise you to take it - you will regret the money spent. If a lens is not capable of shooting well at infinity, then it is not a lens. And in the vicinity, the soap dish also shoots well.

    Auto Revuenon 35mm 2.8 is a Korean licensed copy (with a significant loss in quality) of the AUTO CHINON 1: 2.8 f = 35mm lens. I am the proud owner of the latter and there are no complaints about sharpness at all.
