Despite the fact that the lens is positioned as SP (Super Performance), the build quality is better. The new Tamron A09 lenses feature lightweight play on the retractable body frame. Over time, the backlash becomes stronger, the backlash of the zoom ring and the focus ring appears. Holding the lens in my hands it seems that it is about to crumble. Also, over time, the rubber bands of the zoom ring swell and exfoliate. Parts of the lens can sometimes creak. Build quality is similar to Tamron 17-50mm F / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF). But unlike 17-50, the 28-75mm version lasts a very long time, and the picture quality does not suffer from the shakiness of the case.

The focus and zoom rings are rubberized. Tamron A09 has metal bayonet mount. The retractable trunk of the lens consists of one section.

There is a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic lens Tamron DA09, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom and focus ring is practically not lost.

To prevent such an unpleasant nuance, the lens lock button 'LOCK' (the so-called 'lock') is present on the lens body, which tightly locks focal length at a value of 28 mm.

To fix the trunk of the lens, you must first set the 28 mm focal length.

The lens is inconvenient to 'remove from the lock' before shooting, since the button is in a very inconvenient place.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Focusing

The focus ring rotates only 45 degrees, which makes manual focusing quite difficult. During auto focus the ring rotates and cannot be touched.

Auto focus fast, internal type... Auto focus is quite noisy. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance scale in meters and feet. The closest focusing distance is 33cm and the maximum zoom ratio is 1: 3.9, which is quite good. The inscription 'Macro' on the lens is more for show, since the 'real' macro lens cannot shoot.

Versions A09N and A09N II

  1. Version A09N was released from 2003 to 2008. Version A09N II is available from 2008 to the present day.
  2. The A09N II version has a built-in micro-focus motor, which allows the lens to be used with any Nikon camera, even entry-level amateur cameras. In fact, for Nikon cameras, the A09N II version is 'AF-S' alike. Unfortunately, the name does not show the presence of a focusing motor.
  3. Different names. Tamron is generally very fond of long names for their lenses. If you look closely, the A09N version in its name has the following sequence of 'titles': “Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro”. The A09N II version has a different name, with rearranged 'titles' and a different aperture designation: “Aspherical LD ​​XR DI SP Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 [IF] Macro”.
  4. The auto focus speed of the A09N II is slightly lower than the previous version. Especially the difference in focusing speed is felt on TOP cameras that have fast and powerful built-in focus motor.
  5. The A09N II has an 'AF / MF' focus mode switch located on the lens barrel. The A09N version does not have such a switch.
  6. A09N II removed the aperture control ring.
  7. Other changes and improvements to the lenses are possible, but exact additional information is not available.

Important: There are two sub-versions of A09N with different enlightenment. The first sub-versions have enlightenment, which makes the picture yellowish in JVI and seriously biases white balance in the yellow line (bottle glass). Image quality

In the center, the lens is sharp across the entire range of focal lengths and even at F / 2.8. True, on F / 2.8 I would like better lens performance. If you cover the aperture to F / 4.0, then the claims for sharpness in the center of the frame disappear altogether. Unfortunately, the sharpness at the corners and edges of the frame on a full-format camera is much better. Also, the lens suffers from severe vignetting at open apertures, especially at 28 mm focal length.

Needless to say, distortion is indispensable here, however, it has a uniform appearance and is easily corrected by the editor. Chromatic aberrations pretty well fixed and rarely seen in the frame. Tamron A09 has a good contrast and behaves well in backlight. In addition, the lens has at least some of its own more or less nice design. In general, Tamron A09 does not create anything revolutionary for the money, but at the same time, image quality should be sufficient for most tasks.

    I bought this device recently. The construct is solid, but heavy and the focus ring spins with auto focus (very fast, by the way). At 2,8 quite sharp, including at 75mm, depressing, which often blurred focus on these 75. Mostly in the back, but sometimes the front or for sure. It seems to me that there is a system: if you focus from a distant subject to a near one, then autofocus gets.

      Good afternoon. As a user of the "non-motorized" Sigma EX DG Macro 24-70 \ 2,8 (old version), I can say that the glass is not unambiguous. Specifically, my specimen in the center is very sharp even on the open one, it is noticeably weaker along the edge. 5,6 better. Distortion and HA is quite normal, but it tolerates backlight very badly - there are just a herd of “birds with one stone”! The quality of the filter is very critical - not to save money. Focusing is fast and accurate, there are practically no mistakes, but I selected my copy from 7 (seven!) Lenses, thanks to a familiar seller and + 20 bucks to the price. When zooming, you have to make an effort (at first), with active shooting, it strains. The color rendition is slightly yellow-green (about 5-7% correction). It is very good for facial and bust portraits, but in the “hike” and “for every day” - heavy, has no protection from precipitation, the diameter of the front lens is 82mm. Personally, for everyday shooting I successfully use manual “Vivitars” (28-105, 35-105, 28-90), and “Sigma” I cling to when I’m too lazy to strain with manual focusing. If the ultimate goal is “native” Nikkor, then maybe the same Nikkors (28-105, 24-85, 35-105) should be considered as a “cheaper intermediate stage”, at least more reliable than third-party ones, and the result of the shooting is predictable, without "Surprises", and with the subsequent sale, the losses are minimal (IMHO).         I will add another example of a snapshot with an “alternative” inexpensive, though quite rare (due to its venerable age) Vivitar 35-105 \ 3,3-4 (kobori Opt. N77 ...). Shot with an open “3,3” aperture, FR 35mm, on-camera jpg, moderately hard sharpness, the rest is “auto”, noises are turned off, lighting - one flash “to the ceiling”, D200 carcass. I can't demonstrate bokeh - there's nowhere to go.

    Yuzal such a Tamron for about a year and a half. Model with an autofocus screwdriver. In general, I was very dissatisfied with him. Strongly soap pictures. Sharpness has to be added in post-production. Very sensitive to the slightest twitching of hands during shooting. Plus, almost half of the shots miss autofocus.

    I read half of the reviews - even happy owners note a decrease in sharpness by 75mm - and not always fast and accurate focusing, I tried this glass twice - but did not buy it) - I tried it from friends - I did not like the constructive and% of marriage af ... I mostly at weddings - understood which is not what you want…. while I use fixes instead - 24mm 35mm and 85mm, roughly speaking when you have a cool 85 \ 1.4 portrait lens and I have one - the zoom needs a wide angle current and about 35mm for working indoors (for a full frame) - considering that 24mm + 35mm on the used market are cheaper than the same tamron on the same market - and their reliability is much higher ... then I chose fixes .. basically I use 35 - on it at 2.8 + D800 the sharpness is ringing + af reactive and accurate .... My favorite glass works by 200%….

    I think this tamron is suitable as an all-in-one - for an amateur ... and portrait and landscape, etc. and so on - but the place is mediocre and the shu is not so SHU and the bokeh is not so Bokeh).

      I have the latest motor version on D800 sharp with open (sharper than native 16-35 at the same focal lengths). Claims only to the very corners of the frame. Although I have seen complaints about this lens more than once. Probably depends on the specific instance. The truth is not to say that the lens is fast. I don’t always take off my weddings, but I shot them a couple of times with this glass at a wedding, I didn’t feel any discomfort. Focusing in poor light slows down when native lenses still work fine. But light, small and cheap.

      Hello. I have the lenses listed by you (except for sigma 17-50), carcasses, however, are not multi-pixel: d5100, d200, d50. All lenses are good, I'm not going to part with them. Considering your goals, in my opinion, Tamron 28-75 is the most suitable - for portraits, having suitable characteristics and some "noble", IMHO, drawing (although 50 / 1,8D is suitable for this), non-extreme reportage (but indoors a wide angle may not be enough), excellent for a dog (you probably can't keep up with it with a fix). At one time I took it, arguing that I did not need a wide angle, but this light station wagon + portrait lens, as it were.

              I, of course, have one Tamron 28-75 lens - the one with the motor, so I can't tell the difference in the picture, they seem to be the same optically. Both of them for full-frame AF, on the crop, obviously, give the same AF as DX lenses at the same millimeters. The visual differences of these lenses (because the names on the lens bodies are the same (?!)) Arkady wrote above, I repeat that the one with the motor does not have an aperture ring, has an AF-MF switch and a strip on the body “gold” with black letters (at bezmotonogo - black with gold letters), well, it is written finely on the box: А09NII, Built-in motor.

              I have a version with a D7100 motor. Take with the motor, it is newer, because the rubber bands, as well as the internal focusing gears, can crumble. On the non-motorized version with your camera, you can change the aperture with a ring when changing settings in the menu, which is especially convenient when shooting video and live-view. However, a fix is ​​better suited for these purposes. Nikon 35 mm f1,8 G is optically better, and as they say “must have”, but if you take it for household shooting, then Nikon 35 mm f1,8 G with Tamron 28-75 will not come in handy for you.

    I bought myself such a lens, but the motorized version A09N II. Stands on the D7100 crop. The lens has been used since 2011. Nothing scattered, the rubber bands did not swell, did not fall off. The lens is used in rather harsh conditions - in sand, mud, frost, rain. Works fine. In contrast to the same 17-55, nothing fell apart.
    There is not enough wide angle of at least 24 mm. On the other hand, I have Tamron 10-24, so all focal lenses are closed. I have Nikon 35 mm f1,8 G and Tamron 90 mm f2,8 fixes (non-motor version). Optically, this lens is inferior to them, but not very critical.
    There is not enough stabilizer at the long end.
    It is optically superior to f2,8 sigma 24-70 mm., But the lack of a stabilizer, of course, worsens the picture. On the other hand, for the price of one sigma, you can buy 2 of these. Nikkor 24-70 is second only to f / 4 when scaling a picture by 300% at the corners, then the picture cannot be distinguished (if you cut the corners, then the differences in the center of the frame are only slight differences by f 2,8).
