Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09

Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09 is an inexpensive, versatile fast lens for full-frame cameras, often used as a replacement for native expensive class 24 (28) -70 / 2.8 lenses, such as Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8G ED NanoCrystalCoat SWM IF Aspherical or Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-70mm 1: 2.8 L USM.

The lens barrel has his full name on the barrel: 'Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09', while the box contains a clarification that says 'Model A09N'. The letter 'N' in the model name refers to the version of the lens for Nikon cameras.

Please note that the Tamron A09 lens was also available for other systems:

  • Canon - Model A09E
  • Pentax - Model A09P
  • Sony - Model A09S
  • Nikon - Model A09N (such as in this review) or A09NII

For Sony cameras, there is another original copy of the lens - Sony 2.8 / 28-75 SAM (SAL2875) with the same optical design as the Tamron A09. And also, with the same optical design, there is Konica Minolta AF ZOOM 28-75mm 1: 2.8 (32) D.

Assembly

Despite the fact that the lens is positioned as SP (Super Performance), the build quality is better. The new Tamron A09 lenses feature lightweight play on the retractable body frame. Over time, the backlash becomes stronger, the backlash of the zoom ring and the focus ring appears. Holding the lens in my hands it seems that it is about to crumble. Also, over time, the rubber bands of the zoom ring swell and exfoliate. Parts of the lens can sometimes creak. Build quality is similar to Tamron 17-50mm F / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF). But unlike 17-50, the 28-75mm version lasts a very long time, and the picture quality does not suffer from the shakiness of the case.

The focus and zoom rings are rubberized. Tamron A09 has metal bayonet mount. The retractable trunk of the lens consists of one section.

There is a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic lens Tamron DA09, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom and focus ring is practically not lost.

The lens comes in a small cardboard box with a characteristic Tamron coloring.

'LOCK' button

Frame (trunk) at Tamron A09 spontaneously changes its size under its own weight (perhaps this begins only with time). For example, when the camera is tilted down, the trunk of the lens spontaneously lengthens (focal length increases). To prevent such an unpleasant nuance, the lens lock button 'LOCK' (the so-called 'lock') is present on the lens body, which tightly locks focal length at a value of 28 mm.

To fix the trunk of the lens, you must first set the 28 mm focal length.

The lens is inconvenient to 'remove from the lock' before shooting, since the button is in a very inconvenient place.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Diaphragm

The aperture blades were apparently economized, since the Tamron A09 uses a 7-bladder aperture. On covered diaphragms, the formed hole is rather round, but still the faces of the 7-gon square can be easily traced.

A maximum relative aperture of 1: 2.8 is available over the entire range of focal lengths. Aperture closes to F / 32.

Focusing

The focus ring rotates only 45 degrees, which makes manual focusing quite difficult. During auto focus the ring rotates and cannot be touched.

Auto focus fast, internal type... Auto focus is quite noisy. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance scale in meters and feet. The closest focusing distance is 33cm and the maximum zoom ratio is 1: 3.9, which is quite good. The inscription 'Macro' on the lens is more for show, since the 'real' macro lens cannot shoot.

Compatibility and Features

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras with a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will focus automatically:

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

There is no focus mode switch on the lens itself; to put the lens in manual focus mode, you must put the camera in manual focus mode using the switch located near the camera mount.

The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to the F / 32 value, after which it is fixed with a special button, which is located to the left of the marks aperture. To release the fixation of the diaphragm ring, press the latch button. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32 are plotted on it. It is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

EGF lens for Nikon DX cameras is 42-112.5mm. I don’t see much point in using Tamron A09 on cropped Nikon cameras. Who is looking for a similar inexpensive lens for cropped cameras, I advise you to look away Tamron 17-50mm F / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF).

Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09

Versions A09N and A09N II

There are two versions of the Tamron A09 lens for Nikon cameras: Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro A09 (Model A09N) and Aspherical LD XR DI SP Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 [IF] Macro A09 (Model A09N II).

Below are the main differences between them:

  1. Version A09N was released from 2003 to 2008. Version A09N II is available from 2008 to the present day.
  2. The A09N II version has a built-in micro-focus motor, which allows the lens to be used with any Nikon camera, even entry-level amateur cameras. In fact, for Nikon cameras, the A09N II version is 'AF-S' alike. Unfortunately, the name does not show the presence of a focusing motor.
  3. Different names. Tamron is generally very fond of long names for their lenses. If you look closely, the A09N version in its name has the following sequence of 'titles': “Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro”. The A09N II version has a different name, with rearranged 'titles' and a different aperture designation: “Aspherical LD XR DI SP Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 [IF] Macro”.
  4. The auto focus speed of the A09N II is slightly lower than the previous version. Especially the difference in focusing speed is felt on TOP cameras that have fast and powerful built-in focus motor.
  5. The A09N II has an 'AF / MF' focus mode switch located on the lens barrel. The A09N version does not have such a switch.
  6. A09N II removed the aperture control ring.
  7. Other changes and improvements to the lenses are possible, but exact additional information is not available.

I could check the operation of the focus motor of the A09N II model on a non-motorized camera Nikon D40where the A09N II lens performed wonderfully. Below are examples of photos from the A09N II:

Important: There are two sub-versions of A09N with different enlightenment. The first sub-versions have enlightenment, which makes the picture yellowish in JVI and seriously biases white balance in the yellow line (bottle glass). The review shows a subversion of A09N with updated enlightenment. Updated A09N enlightenment shimmers with green, yellow and purple colors (see photo below). Subversion A09N with old enlightenment shimmers in green, red and purple (no yellow). Be careful not to fall for the version of A09N with the old enlightenment.

Image quality

In the center, the lens is sharp across the entire range of focal lengths and even at F / 2.8. True, on F / 2.8 I would like better lens performance. If you cover the aperture to F / 4.0, then the claims for sharpness in the center of the frame disappear altogether. Unfortunately, the sharpness at the corners and edges of the frame on a full-format camera is much better. Also, the lens suffers from severe vignetting at open apertures, especially at 28 mm focal length.

Needless to say, distortion is indispensable here, however, it has a uniform appearance and is easily corrected by the editor. Chromatic aberrations pretty well fixed and rarely seen in the frame. Tamron A09 has a good contrast and behaves well in backlight. In addition, the lens has at least some of its own more or less nice design. In general, Tamron A09 does not create anything revolutionary for the money, but at the same time, image quality should be sufficient for most tasks.

I used this lens in a huge number of full-fledged shootings as one single universal solution with cameras Nikon D700, D610, D90 and S5 Pro:

All photos were shot using protective filter Marumi Made in Japan DHG Super Lens Protect 67mm.

Results

In terms of price and quality, the Tamron A09 (versions A09N, A09N II) is a good universal fast lens for full-frame cameras. On APS-C cameras does not allow the full use of a wide angle. The Tamron A09 is one of the cheapest and best alternatives for professional 24-70 / 2.8 and 28-70 / 2.8. Recently, I recommend Tamron A09 to everyone as balanced decision for full-length cameras.

  • MELHAUZ

Perhaps I will take this Tamron instead of two fixes 35 and 50 and I will be happy :)
Tokin looked and Sigma a little expensive :( this Tamron will be just right

  • Dmitriy

strange lenses TAMRON, pictures are different every time …………….

  • Sergei Kuznetsov

I’ve been renting for half a year on the D7000, I bought it at auction almost for nothing, for 130 euros. I must say right away that I never wore 50mm1.8 and 18-105 more. For your money you can’t find a better lens. By the way, I have a variant with MACRO, but there is no macro as such, it just allows you to focus closer on the long end.

Of the minuses - the zoom ring is slightly backlash, and the focusing ring is wide enough and the ring finger or little finger constantly touch it during autofocus. Autofocus sometimes misses, if you do macro, autofocus sometimes starts to twitch back and forth, cannot be determined and very rarely there is a glitch that autofocus stops working, it helps to slightly spin the zoom. But these are all little things that you quickly get used to, there is nothing to complain about for your money.

For those who think that in the evening at 2.8 they will get good pictures, it will immediately be disappointing - if the ISO is not 1600-3200, there is no way to get away from blur, especially when photographing children. And if in the dark you open the diaphragm too much, then the autofocus misses in half of the cases are due to a small grip.

Tamron 28-75? A good fix allows, as a rule, to make trimming (crop) with a 3-fold increase in scale without a noticeable deterioration in image quality, that is, it is practically equivalent to a 3-fold zoom. This is all the more true since such a fix always has a higher image quality than zoom with an equal lower focal length limit. Take the top fix of 28 mm, multiply by 3 and get 84 mm. But at the same time, any top-end fix will be, firstly, easier and more compact, and secondly, with much less light scattering. T. about. Tamron is resting! Think for yourself, decide for yourself - to have or not to have ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Valentine, your task is to shoot a pretty portrait on 28mm, and then write something about Tamron with his 75 2.8)

    • VLADIMIR NIKOLAEVICH SYCHEV

VALENTIN, the thing is that you can cut it out, but the human eye, for example, will be “made” not from 5-6 thousand pixels, but from 500-600. So much for a lost quality. Of course, if the cameras were 40-50 megapixels, then you can cut it out, and it's a pity to lose the quality of the frame.

    • Niuk

Geometric distortions at different focal lengths are different ... and cutoffs cannot correct this, for portraits 75mm is preferable.

  • MELHAUZ

Yesterday I bought it for myself, after the whale training, of course, they are cool, even though it is heavy, I think it is heavier than my d3100, I was pleased with the fast autofocus and internal focusing, although I have not tried it yet, but I already feel that it is cool :) )) I don’t regret a penny. What would you advise to pay attention to from the “must have” line for replenishing the optics fleet? I only have this tamron and whale.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would recommend a good fixed lens, for example Nikon 50mm F1.8G or Nikon 50mm F1.4G.

    • Koba

All people sometimes talk about a certain lens pattern. This is partly true. Here I had almost half a hundred lenses, but for some reason it is always nice to look at the pictures obtained from Tamron 17-50 of the old version without a stub on the crop (it also has a very high resolution), as well as from this Tamron. Of course, we are all different and my words will seem ridiculous to someone, but after this tamron I personally don't even want to look at the picture from Canon 24-105 / 4 L (no resolution, no pictures, some kind of dry technical shot). Not in the subject, but all of them ling also really like the picture from Voigtlander 58 / 1.4 ... Tamron made lenses for medium and large format cameras, and through the OEM line he produces them for brands, and who knows what they have developed there, it is known that They even licensed Nikon's autofocus standards, so Tamron lenses are less sinful in terms of autofocus on Nikon than on Kenon. Here is a recent updated line from this company - practically beating all analogs in optics, range, pattern, and stabilizer, not to mention prices ... My 17-50 has been working without a stub on my Penta for the fifth year already and like new even today, and the resolution is 5,6-8 is definitely more than many fixes, even in the corners, which is confirmed by the photozone test (other sites sin with bias, which has long been known).

I analyzed my photos. I rarely use focal lengths from wide to 28-30, apparently I'm afraid of promising distortions. Not later than yesterday I went with my wife to the park with one 70-300vr, and nothing, they somehow managed. And the angle of 28 mm would be enough. In my opinion, angles are more widely needed either in the architectural landscape, or when the wall is really leaning back against the ass. I still glue landscapes from vertical frames - the resolution and detail are cool. For me, 75 on a full-frame lens is more important than 50 on a crop lens. I wanted to buy a SIGMA 17-50 with a stub, and yesterday I took it and tried on the whale 18-105vr set 75 mm, turned off the stabilizer and took texts in the evening light for 1/15 second, it is a pity to attach the file. All without grease, clearly. That is, the idea is this: isn’t it more convenient to add 25mm in length and have a central sharp cut of a full-frame lens on the crop than 50 mm and soap angles? By the way, the full-matrix NIKON 70-300 VR is good for this, the frame is sharp, well, just the whole, I’m not overjoyed. And in this TAMRON there will also be aperture 2.8, and the price is very affordable. And the stabilizer on these focal points is a dubious thing, more likely for lovers of beer and other soft drinks. Most likely, I’ll buy it (but I will choose it). Of course, this is solely my opinion. Good luck to all.

      Thanks for the interesting observations.

  • VLADIMIR NIKOLAEVICH SYCHEV

THE AUTHOR'S PHOTOS ARE COOL. HERE IS SOMETHING FROM ANYTHING: BRANCHES, LEAVES YES RYY TOKENS, AND HITS. BEAUTIFULLY. I AM ONCE BECAUSE: THE PHOTOGRAPHER (HEAD) TAKES OUT…. WELL, YOU UNDERSTOOD.

  • MELHAUZ

And I’m also thinking about fixation, but I myself looked at these three: Tamron 90mm f / 2.8 SP AF Di MACRO 1: 1 (built-in AF motor), Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 Micro, Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G AF- S. Honestly, I want a Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S, and about my recently acquired Tamron 28-70 2.8, I can now say for sure what I like, the other day I snapped a bunch of pictures until the battery sat down, probably an hour and a half for continuous shooting he took this off a couple of lovers also got cool photos, the only thing that upset it on f2.8 is sometimes the photos are blurry, it’s not that the focus missed, but some kind of soft photos turn out, is this probably a feature like that !?

  • Stas

I’ve been using it for 1,5 years, I found that at 75 mm sharpness is weak at f2.8

    • skinnernsk

I also found that at 75mm for good sharpness, you need to cover up to 3.5. A little offensive, but not fatal. I ask the rest of the owners of the subject on FF to unsubscribe and honestly say whether you have such a problem.

  • Artem

I note to the author about the deterioration of the picture to the edge of the frame on the FF, so most likely this lens is for crop. For FF, appropriate lenses are also needed, but not for the last ones, equipment is acquired. And for an amateur, in my opinion, there are not many alternatives in terms of price / quality ratio. But, as mentioned everywhere, Tamron must be chosen from several instances.

Arkady, there is a MINOLTA X-9 camera with a MINOLTA MD ZOOM 28-70 mm 1: 3.5-4.8 japan lens f.55 mm lens. Nowhere can I find any feedback on the lens. It can be somehow adapted to the NIKON D3000. It has a bayonet mounted with four bolts. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I have not encountered this bundle, I can not tell.

  • Sylvia

Arkady, please advise whether it is advisable to take this tamron, having available 35 / 1,8 AF-S? I’ve been eyeing him for almost a year, but I turned up inexpensively 35 fix and took it, and now again there is not enough zoom. I also have Tokina 50-135 and Nikkor 50 / 1,8G. I shoot mostly children, I do not always have time to change lenses and it is not always convenient to do this, so I want versatility. I had a tamron 17-50, but, in my opinion, I got a bad copy, soapy, I don’t risk taking it for the second time.

    • Sylvia

Does this tamron lose much in sharpness to the 35 ke?

      • Arkady Shapoval

My copy was very sharp. I would not take it, having such an arsinal as yours.

    • Vitalij

Silvia, if you bazhaєte, I can sell you an object for 2450 UAH. "Beck", "front" focus - outward. On the circle of the focus of the trocha, an elastic band was stretched (well, you will be able to use the current assets), - I have developed and glued to the circle of focus of "navigation" :)

And in general, - a miraculous object. Selling, more switching to Canon. So please! :)

      Telephone: (097) 649-64-59

      • Oksana

Vitalyu, it’s already begun to sell your bazhannya to sell. Have you sold yogo?

  • Alena

Please tell me how it will work on the D5100? Or tell me the most suitable analogue for this carcass, with F2.8.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It will be exactly as written in the review. The best option is the native Nikkor 24-70G N

      • anonym

Arkady, with all due respect to you, I want to ask a question: are you bidding on

  • Novel

Are your photos just wonderful, really without processing in terms of sharpening? Not much inferior in my profane opinion 24-70 2,8L. Maybe this is not noticeable in the resolution of 1600 * 1200? Are underestimated frames also cutting and detailed on your nikon? Can you share them? I’m thinking, but on my canon 550d I can also count on a good 18 megapixel result or is it good only in a reduced resolution of 1600 * 1200
    Thank you

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, indeed, without processing, what is the reason to do a review with pictures on which sharpness is wound. I came across a good version of Tamron, although I recently took another one, it was also very sharp, especially at full frame.

  • Novel

Arkady, hello! If it does not bother you, could you please share the pictures with me in the original resolution (or if this is copyright, then at least fragments containing foliage). At least that picture where the photographer takes pictures of flower beds. I noticed that my whale, while decreasing nothing like that. looks like. Thanks.

  • Arkady Shapoval

I did not find pictures from the reviews. The review presents pictures at 2MP, for example https://radojuva.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/sg/tamron-28-75-mm-af/tamron-af-28-75mm-f-2-8-sp-xr-di-ld-aspherical-if-10.jpg This is enough to create a general impression of the lens.

  • Igor

I can’t decide whether to change my 35mm 1.8G to this tamron? 35mm excellent sharp fix, but lacks better bokeh, and 28mm and not 35, the difference is small but sometimes these couple of centimeters are not enough. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If the question is only in wide angle, then I do not recommend changing.

  • Alexey

Arkady, hello! I consider this lens as an option for a staffer to my D3100. If I understand correctly, this Tamron goes without a stabilizer. Therefore, I would like to additionally know how he behaves in low light conditions? Is there any lubrication? And do you really need a stub on such focal points. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The behavior of the lens without a stabilizer depends on the shutter speed on which you are shooting. In more detail in the section how to take pictures with hands. For example, the native Nikkon 24-70 is also without a stabilizer.

  • MELHAUZ

My joy did not last long with this lens, as I took it back to the store yesterday. The reason - the focusing ring began to wedge. I used it for about 6 months, I was naturally careful with it. They said that they might have to wait about a month. Here are the guys. Yes, and I tested it normally during this time, I regret that I took it, the pictures are not clear at 2.8 around the focal point, so that there is a more or less clear picture, it is necessary to close at least 4. Chromatite is terrible. What I liked about it is the focal length and the metal lens mount, that's where all its pluses end. I should have listened to you and took for myself two fixes 35 and 50 and I would not have known grief.

    • Arkady Shapoval

But there is experience that you need to contact Tamron very carefully.

  • MELHAUZ

I dare not disagree Arkady, that is, that is.

  • Eugene

Arkady, hello! Comparing this lens with the Nikon 35-70 2.8, which one would you leave for the Nikon D50? And why.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the D50, Tamron would have left, 35-70 does not hold back light and the wide angle is narrower.

  • Eugene

    Thank you!

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, hello, thank you very much for the reviews - as always very interesting and informative .. the question is this - there is an opportunity to buy a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC or the above Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and I hesitate in choosing between them. I'm confused by the lack of a stabilizer in the latter .. the lens will be used in conjunction with the Nikon D3100 .. I shoot a lot indoors .. I will be very grateful for your advice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Indoors better on crop 17-50

      • Dmitriy

        Thank you!

  • aidyn

    Good day!
    broke his head
I'm sitting, I think what to take
1.Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] BOO5NII
    2.Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F / 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO A09
    3.Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM
    or just 35 nikonovsky fix

I rent at home, nature, I like macro
Sigma is cheaper than tamrons ($ 50)

    • Arkady Shapoval

If the wide angle is not critical, then I recommend Tamron SP AF 28-75mm

    • Roman

Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 don’t take it, I lost it for the first time, having given it under the guarantee, if they wanted to remember the same new one, they sent 3 software and didn’t get a reference, then turned a penny, now Sygma bypassed the tenth road, even a lot of marriage in them.

  • aidyn

thanks! I’ll shoot on whale on focal 28 (see if I can manage)
