Despite the fact that the lens is positioned as SP (Super Performance), the build quality is better. The new Tamron A09 lenses feature lightweight play on the retractable body frame. Over time, the backlash becomes stronger, the backlash of the zoom ring and the focus ring appears. Holding the lens in my hands it seems that it is about to crumble. Also, over time, the rubber bands of the zoom ring swell and exfoliate. Parts of the lens can sometimes creak. Build quality is similar to Tamron 17-50mm F / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF). But unlike 17-50, the 28-75mm version lasts a very long time, and the picture quality does not suffer from the shakiness of the case.

The focus and zoom rings are rubberized. Tamron A09 has metal bayonet mount. The retractable trunk of the lens consists of one section.

There is a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic lens Tamron DA09, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom and focus ring is practically not lost.

To prevent such an unpleasant nuance, the lens lock button 'LOCK' (the so-called 'lock') is present on the lens body, which tightly locks focal length at a value of 28 mm.

To fix the trunk of the lens, you must first set the 28 mm focal length.

The lens is inconvenient to 'remove from the lock' before shooting, since the button is in a very inconvenient place.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Focusing

The focus ring rotates only 45 degrees, which makes manual focusing quite difficult. During auto focus the ring rotates and cannot be touched.

Auto focus fast, internal type... Auto focus is quite noisy. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance scale in meters and feet. The closest focusing distance is 33cm and the maximum zoom ratio is 1: 3.9, which is quite good. The inscription 'Macro' on the lens is more for show, since the 'real' macro lens cannot shoot.

Versions A09N and A09N II

  1. Version A09N was released from 2003 to 2008. Version A09N II is available from 2008 to the present day.
  2. The A09N II version has a built-in micro-focus motor, which allows the lens to be used with any Nikon camera, even entry-level amateur cameras. In fact, for Nikon cameras, the A09N II version is 'AF-S' alike. Unfortunately, the name does not show the presence of a focusing motor.
  3. Different names. Tamron is generally very fond of long names for their lenses. If you look closely, the A09N version in its name has the following sequence of 'titles': “Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-75mm 1: 2.8 Macro”. The A09N II version has a different name, with rearranged 'titles' and a different aperture designation: “Aspherical LD ​​XR DI SP Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 [IF] Macro”.
  4. The auto focus speed of the A09N II is slightly lower than the previous version. Especially the difference in focusing speed is felt on TOP cameras that have fast and powerful built-in focus motor.
  5. The A09N II has an 'AF / MF' focus mode switch located on the lens barrel. The A09N version does not have such a switch.
  6. A09N II removed the aperture control ring.

Important: There are two sub-versions of A09N with different enlightenment. The first sub-versions have enlightenment, which makes the picture yellowish in JVI and seriously biases white balance in the yellow line (bottle glass). Image quality

In the center, the lens is sharp across the entire range of focal lengths and even at F / 2.8. True, on F / 2.8 I would like better lens performance. If you cover the aperture to F / 4.0, then the claims for sharpness in the center of the frame disappear altogether. Unfortunately, the sharpness at the corners and edges of the frame on a full-format camera is much better. Also, the lens suffers from severe vignetting at open apertures, especially at 28 mm focal length.

Needless to say, distortion is indispensable here, however, it has a uniform appearance and is easily corrected by the editor. Chromatic aberrations pretty well fixed and rarely seen in the frame. Tamron A09 has a good contrast and behaves well in backlight. In addition, the lens has at least some of its own more or less nice design. In general, Tamron A09 does not create anything revolutionary for the money, but at the same time, image quality should be sufficient for most tasks.

    Bought a used motorized version of this lens. Sharpness is within the expected, but sadness - autofocus does not work in Live View. On the D750. S mode (all variants). I checked it on another, D7000 also does not focus. Manual focusing is normal, autofocus works without problems through the viewfinder.     I would like to add a few comments on the experience of using the lens (NII variant, with motor) for almost a year as the main lens on the D750.

    Pros - light, not too big, quickly focuses, the image is not satisfactory, and in the absence of chromatism, it is almost the best of those that have been.

    I will also add that he does not notice any protrusion of the trunk, as well as a special flimsy. There is perhaps a feeling of some kind of slickness - the gum is covered with an ugly gray coating. But this is nonsense.

    Cons - a bunch of glitches and annoying shortcomings on trifles and not only.
    1. The main one is the lack of focusing in LiveView mode, which I already wrote about at the very beginning. This is a shame because the D750 has a flip-up screen, which I can't use. More precisely, I can do it to frame, and then switch to normal mode and take a shot, but it is easier to take a shot at random and correct it next. By the way, the seller said that he did not work on the Z-system either (that's why he sold it).
    2. The motor died in a week (the lens was used, so I can't guess the reasons). Repaired, it seems, for 4 thousand rubles (bought for 10). Since then, it has been working normally, only sometimes (very rarely) it suddenly stops focusing, helps to disconnect-connect again.
    3. Focusing is noisy and occurs in jerks, as if with fine-tuning.
    4. Focusing errors, it seems to me, are too many. You have to do more takes. Perhaps these are just my “crooked hands”. The back / front focus did not clearly notice.
    5. Quite recently, such a glitch began to appear - it does not close the diaphragm on very closed ones (16, 22, etc.) Maybe it was before, I just almost did not shoot in this mode. It appears in the form of completely overexposed frames (and can be seen from the depth of field). At 5.6, 8 and so, everything is fine.
    6. Huge bright green hares in the backlight (no hood, alas).
    6. Sigma 17-50 2.8, which I shot on crop, is, on the whole, somehow more fun, juicier, or something. And with a stabilizer! Although he also loves to smear.

    Well, subjectively, 28 is still not enough for a reportage ... but this is not a specific model of wine.

    Conclusions - a normal lens, but somehow he asks to replace himself with something more serious :)

      I have experience shooting for the Sigma you specified.
      Look - Arkady has reviews of the most popular versions on the site.
      The first version is SIGMA ZOOM 24-70mm 1: 2.8 DG EX ASPHERICAL, it was also called “bubble”.
      It is the cheapest one, it is the first 24-70 / 2.8 lens of the EX DG series, it is worse optically (soapy) and is unlikely to resolve the matrix of your camera. Tokina 28-70 / 2.8 or 28-80 / 2.8 will be sharper at all diaphragms, except for the open one (if you are lucky enough to find Tokina with clean glasses).
      Compared to the first version of the 24-70 / 2.8L, this Sigma will definitely be worse.
      The next version, which is more common and easier to find in good condition, is the SIGMA 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG MACRO. I just have one on Canon and until recently was on the Sigma SA mount.
      I came across lenses in very good condition, very inexpensive.
      This lens resolves the 1Ds_mk2 matrix. On 1Ds_mk3 - I am satisfied with its permission in principle and I will not call it soapy. Nice volumetric picture. There is no color distortion in AutoBB, perhaps slightly warmer. The focus on both 1Ds_mk2 and 1Ds_mk3 just gets to the right place.
      There is a caveat that the lens is not confidently focusing at 24mm.
      This is on Canon EF mount (on all cameras and + film) and on Sigma SA mount.
      Sharpness - for me it is a little sharper than Tokina 28-70 / 2.6-2.8 or about the same. But the 28-80 / 2.8 caught sharper than this Sigma.
      Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG HSM - extreme version before 24-70 / 2.8 HSM ART with stub.
      They still ask for a lot for it - about 30 thousand rubles (the price of a new one at the time of sale in 2014-2015). This version is often found under the Nikon mount, less often under the Canon mount.
      AF is criticized. I have not tried this version yet, but I think I might buy it and try it if I don’t decide to buy Tokina 24-70 / 2.8.
      My advice is to check the AF performance on your camera before buying. Sigmas are often scolded for working on Pyataks. I have no complaints about the work of Sigma on Units and on the film Troika (EOS 3).

    I bought such a lens the other day, it’s generally unrealistic to shoot at apertures of 2,8 -3.2 during the day with a zoom, there’s terrible soap in the photo, if you fix the focal length at 28 then everything becomes fine, can you please tell me if this is normal and whether it can be fixed.
