Jupiter-36 250mm F3.5 - just a huge, very heavy and unusual lens from medium format cameras. It is unfortunate that the yard is already 2012, and there are no affordable digital medium format cameras and backs. Therefore, the full potential of Jupiter-36V will be revealed only in a few years, when there will be relatively cheap rentreformatnye cameras and the interest and need for high-quality lenses.

There is a version of the Jupiter-36V lens with a “B” mount (Pentacon Six, P6, Praktisix) for medium format cameras Kiev-6C, Kiev-6C TTL, Kiev-60, Kiev-88CM, Kiev-88C. The Jupiter-36B lenses were produced at the Ukrainian Arsenal plant (possibly also at the Vega plant). Where exactly my copy was produced - I can't say, since all the identification marks were covered with black tape, most likely to simply hide the Soviet roots of the lens and give it even more pathos and attention of the surrounding public.

A huge advantage of medium format lenses is a large working distance, which will make it possible to make an adapter for almost any camera with the possibility of normal focusing. Unfortunately, I got a lens with a Salyut / M42 adapter, and I used Jupiter-36V on my camera Nikon D200 with the help of an additional adapter KP-42 / N while losing the ability to focus at infinity in the region of 30 meters. More details in the section Soviet optics. On Canon cameras, the lens is easiest to install through two adapters Salute / M42 + M42 / Canon EOS. It is written in more detail in the section old lenses at canon. Other systems also have their own adapters. The person who provided me with this lens uses it on a Pentax kr camera with two adapters Salute / M42 + M42 / Pentax.

The main features of the lens Jupiter-36V:
1. The lens very heavyIt’s quite difficult to manage. The lens does not have a tripod socket, for example, like the Tair-3 or Helios-40-2. The complexity of the work is due to the fact that in reality the photographer does not hold a camera with a lens, but a lens with a camera. This lens is contraindicated for girls, you can only pose in front of it.

2. The focus ring moves smoothly. Focusing ring metal. I consider the closest location of the focusing ring to the lens mount as the most serious drawback of the lens... Since you need to hold the lens itself with your left hand and focus, the lens puts a large lever and a huge load on the left hand. If the focus ring was in the middle, or closer to the front lens, it would be much more convenient to use the lens. The Helios-40-2 lens has a similar problem. When focusing, the entire lens unit moves, while the lens noticeably “stretches” the trunk. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is quite large - 3.5 meters, you should always remember about this. For example, the distant brother Jupiter-37A has an MDF of 1.2m.

3. The maximum aperture of F3.5 does not make the lens fast, but F3.5 at 250mm is a very serious indicator. From Soviet optics with Jupiter-36B at similar focal lengths can be pulled in aperture only by MS Jasper-4N 200mm F2.8... They say there was a descendant of Jupiter-36B - Tele-4 3,5 / 250... The petals of the diaphragm are of a yellowish metallic color without blackening. Considering that the physical diameter of the aperture is simply huge, this negatively affects when photographing with closed apertures due to the fact that light is reflected from the metal blades. The closed diaphragm blades form “nuts”, the blades are not rounded. It's funny, if you close the aperture to the maximum value of F16, then you will visually see a rather large hole formed by the aperture. When using adapters, the function of the jumping aperture is lost.

4. In my copy there was no built-in hood, but there was a screw-on hood in the front light filter. The lens hood does not help the lens in exposure. The lens just has a giant front lens under the 82mm filter, which is now not so easy to find. The front protective cover of the lens is metal, and it does not click on the lens, but is screwed in as a light filter.

5. Of course, the best option is to use Jupiter-36V in full frame. On crop, Jupiter-36V will give EGF equal to 375mm for Nikon DX cameras, and 400mm for Canon APS-C cameras... The angle of view is very narrow on the crop. Due to the very shallow depth of field and long distance, it will be very difficult to get into focus. Yes, and take off need at shutter speeds no longer than 1/250.

6. Like any other old non-autofocus lens, it has all the necessary indicators for the depth of field, aperture and focus distance.

Image quality.
The image quality was disappointing. Most likely I did not have the most successful copy. The main problem of the lens is complete incompatibility with side light. The lens loses much contrast, in a light backlight (even when the light source does not fall into the frame), a photograph with a strong veil is obtained. Maybe I came across an unsuccessful instance, or maybe this is the problem of single-layer enlightenment. It would be interesting to try the version with MS. As for sharpness, sharpness on F3.5 is not the most pleasant, when closing the aperture sharpness increases very weakly. But the lens forms a three-dimensional image, without distortion and vignetting on my DX camera. Shallow depth of field allows you to make excellent portraits. The lens bokeh is excellent, like any other telephoto with an optical circuit Sonnar, for example Jupiter-37A, Jupiter-11 or a close relative Jupiter-21A... Color reproduction is normal. From Jupiter-36B, a wonderful "live" image is obtained, in this regard, I really liked Jupiter-36B.

All examples were made in my Nikon D200 with automatic white balance. All photos with automatic levels when converting from RAW to JPEG due to the fact that the lens is a little contrast. Reduced size 1600 * 1200 and imprinted data from EXIF.
Personal impressions:
Of course, the lens is very heavy. Such a lens can be used for photography, hunting, and self-defense ... It looks very solid on the camera with the hood on. I took Jupiter-36B for TFP set, when shooting, it turned out a lot of marriage due to misses in focusing and low contrast in some scenes. I shot with shutter speeds no shorter than 1/250 with handsto avoid blur, but because of the weight of the lens, you can increase the shutter speed up to 1/100. I do not recommend buying this lens for cropped cameras, it is very heavy and clumsy. Better look at Jupiter-21A or Jupiter-21M. If you want a super telephoto lens - Tair-3 or mirror-meniscus lenses of the type ZM-5CA 500mm F8.0... But on the full frame with Jupiter-36B, you can work - it's still very large aperture for such a focal length. For example, many people like lenses 80-200mm F2.8 (70-200mm F2.8), Jupiter-36V at F3.5 250mm will blur background no worse for them. Personally, I use the Soviet Jupiter-37A on the crop, and if you need something longer, then I have autofocus on hand Nikon 70-300VR.

A fine lens, but on a crop of sharpness with an open it may not be enough.
Of the obvious sins - an inconvenient focus ring, a dangling lens hood (this is on the version of the mid-80s) and a very short-lived aperture mechanism.

Compared to Tair-3, Jupiter's F / 3.5 gives much more chances to make a normal frame, despite the large HA.

The reason for the loss of contrast is simple and obvious. A medium format lens covers a much larger surface. Therefore, in small format SLRs, the side walls of the camera are illuminated and reflect. On the SF camera, this effect is not observed.

Only the foam spacers inside the box from time to time lay down (- :( year of manufacture 1983). Its cost at that time was 320 rubles. Arsenal Plant. The hood is built-in, retractable. And the cover is not screwed on, but is worn on top. V. Bayonet took more for the collection, but if I find the KP88 / N, then you can take it off.

There is a butt, you can conveniently shoot the birds without lubrication by pressing the trigger. Only it is intended for film, for numbers you need to figure out how to attach the remote control to the trigger. You can also look in the direction of meniscus-mirror lenses (ZM or MTO), they have focal lengths of 500-100, but there is a low aperture, you can normally shoot only at bright noon at high ISO. I also have a homemade photographic gun based on the Industar-37 (4.5 / 300) lens, it came out in size like a grenade launcher.

At full frame it will be the same 250mm, but in order to find out the EGF, for the medium format, the FD will be multiplied by a factor of less than one, and for crop by a factor of more than one. I bought myself, in version 36c, I changed the backdrop myself on a 3D printer, screwed a plastic bayonet from Nikon with Ali on the back, hung it on the D7000. Looks like a single design. )) I am delighted with the lens. This is the best lens for flowers and ducks. Sharpness starts at 4-5.6, at 3.5 a very pleasant soft picture, while the colors are amazing, some kind of analog or something, I can't even explain. I have Ju-37, Ju-21, Tair-3FS. All these are excellent glasses, sharp, saturated. But it is in 36v that there is some inexplicable warmth or something, branded photos from it just turn out.
I did not notice any difficulties in handling. The focus ring is located approximately in the middle of the lens. Of course, it would have been closer to the front lens, it would have been better, but even so very much. I walked around the park for 3 hours, my hands were not tired at all. The only thing I noticed is that if it gets a little darker, I stop getting into focus.
We must try to hang it on Sonya, see how the focus picking will work. In general, I highly recommend it. I took on Avito for 1500r, unfortunately, not a very good person slipped me with a small speck on the back lens enlightenment, which sometimes appears in the photo. But in Photoshop, it is easy to clean up. I will not change the lens, suddenly a bad copy will come across ... The serial number for 85 is starting with me. I'll add a couple of photos now.
