How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.

  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.

Сonclusion

HELIOS-44M 2/58 - a good modification of the older versions of Helios-44 with good sharpness, unusual twisting of the background. The main difference from previous versions was blinking aperture with 'M / A' switch to select aperture control mode. There are two versions of what exactly the letter 'M' in the lens name stands for: Мorifice plate or Мlens identification.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

    Maybe in the lens file?

  • Peter

adapter without a lens, look in the settings, thanks

  • Dude

“APS (Full Frame)” >>> full frame is 35mm. And APS-C is a crop, similar to 24mm APS film.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • anonym

On canon 1100d, what kind of adapter do you need for Helios 44m?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      M42-Canon EOS.

  • Nastya

Hello! I have a Nikon d3100 camera, I bought a Helios 44m lens, I have it immediately with infinity. When I take pictures without a flash, the frame is completely black, despite the bright light (aperture is open). What does that mean? How can I fix this problem?

  • Anastasia

Hi) Does Nikon 5100 need an adapter? If so, which one?

    • Dim

Nikon - M42, can be ordered from Aliexpress. There are three types: a simple one with a price of about 1-2 dollars, with a lens, with a lens and a chip, this is about 25-30 dollars. With the first, it will be possible to focus only at a distance of several meters \ you can shoot only in M mode, with the second you can focus to infinity, with the third, mode A is available. They say that an adapter with a lens slightly spoils the picture quality. If you live in Russia or Kazakhstan, get ready to wait for the package for about a month.

  • Sergey

More and more often manual lenses are used for video shooting on SLR cameras, including me. Therefore, I decided to do a test of the Helios-44M 58/2 and Canon EF 50 / 1.8 II lenses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZfw3K0HYXk

  • Natalia

Hello. I have a Canon 500 D camera. I bought an M42 adapter, but the lens does not focus on infinity, shooting only in macro mode. And the lens does not fit close to the camera body (I compare it with your photograph on the camera, side view), probably it has a specific design? Is it possible to change something, or just use it for macro?

  • Natalia

All figured out !!!! A thin macro ring was put on the lens. Yes, so tight that I unscrewed a little :) Now the lens sits like a glove! The pictures are great!

  • igor

I shot portraits, the lens is good, but this boke began to annoy annoying a pass to the native

  • Ruslan

Does the G-44m have the same threaded mount as the G-44-2? That is 42 / 1,5 ????

  • Nastya

What are the best lenses for Zenit-E and ET? (with such a thread that the adapter is not required)

    • anonym

The adapter will still be needed when using any Soviet lenses

  • anonym

Good afternoon! I need your help. Today I bought mechanical macro rings for Nikon (D 3100), and screwed Helios -44M 2/58 to them (well, of course, + M-42 adapter), but I can't focus! Everything is blurry (((you can't see anything ...
Really looking forward to the answer! thanks

  • anonym

Hello, is it possible to use such a lens on the Panasonic GF6?

  • Alexander

I ordered (and received) M42-Canon EOS adapters in China. The Chinese “failed” the thickness of the rings. Size 1,35 - 1,37mm in a circle. When attaching a lens to a camera (canon 50d), axial play (displacement of the lens relative to its axis), i.e. "Failed" and the size of the mount. The consequences are clear and there are. Is there a solution to these problems or rings in the trash?

    • Lynx

Well, you can grind the extra 0,02 mm))

  • Alexander

Should be 1,45mm (compensation size). And the size of the mount? I made, once again, the conclusion that the Chinese should not be taken. Although the rings were not cheap. One with a chip, and two simple ones. The chip has f1,4 - 58 stitched. At least f2.0. Failed to reprogram.

  • Xprofoto

Do you guys recommend taking 44m or 44-2?

    • Lynx

      44-m7

  • Anatoly

do not say yak rіznitsya mіzh 44M and 44M-6?

  • Anatoly

not one hundred percent of the design, but one hundred percent of the quality of the photographs ...

    • Peter

44m44 and 6m44 are both sharp, but 6mXNUMX has an enlightened lens

  • Anatoly

on skilki I know, 44m tezh maє yakes pokrittya lіnz? chi ni?

  • Alexander

The other day I bought 44m of the Krasnogorsk OMZ of 1982, practically unused, sharp on the Kenon 5D already with an open one, and it is sharper than a fifty-kopeck nikkor 1.8 G by 2.0 on the D5100. The only moment when shooting landscape, although it is not for this, of course, when the aperture is closed to 10, for example, the viewfinder immediately darkens and “refuses to focus” (confirmation stops working), you have to use switch the aperture mode to position A, focus on the open one, and then, for shooting, close to the desired value, switching again to position M.

  • Marina

Arkady, good night. I really need your advice
My nikon stopped seeing Helik 44M. Writes that the lens is not attached. What can be wrong? The adapter is worth it. I used to shoot them. Then the need disappeared and set the telephoto. Now I want the manual again, but I can’t see it (((I myself can repair it? I think the adapter is in it? Maybe I didn’t take it off carefully? I see my native lenses. Everything is as usual. But with the gel like that

    • Arkady Shapoval

Set the camera to M mode and turn off the flash

  • Marina

here I am a fool !!!! Lord, there was aperture priority! thanks!

  • Vadim

    aperture 2,8

  • anonym

Still such a thing ... Helios-44m and Helios-44-2 are completely the same in terms of lenses and distances of their landing, the lenses are interchangeable.
