Review of I50U 3.5 / 50 (NPO Optika)

I50U review

I50U review

I50U - a lens from photographic enlargers, the same as Vega-11U. Digital photography breathed new life into him. After being on my camera Industar-50-2 и Vega-11U and even reverse macro lens, I could not imagine that such a tiny lens as my camera I-50U.

TTX I50U:
Focal Length: 50mm
Diaphragm: F3.5-F11, without fixed values with smooth change, designations are provided for F4, F5.6, F8, F11
Number of aperture blades: 6 pieces.
Focus distance: approximately 20 cm from the projection plane
Diagram: four lenses, anastigmat
Landing thread: M39

There is a modification of this lens with different frames. There are I50U with black and white colors, depending on the place of production - the frame itself is also different. There is a brother I50U-1, and his ancestor Industar-22U and several other similar lenses for photo enlargers. This review presents exactly the black version of the lens I50U 3,5 / 50, issued in the Scientific and Production Association "Optics", Moscow.

The I-50U is not quite a lens, since does not have a focus ring and the ability to focus in general. On SLR cameras, the lens is only suitable for macro photography, as it has a fixed focusing distance. How do you focus on it? In any way, you do not need to focus, but move the lens itself with the camera towards the subject of shooting, or in the opposite direction from the subject of shooting, trying to ensure that the subject is in focus. You can move the object itself until it comes into focus. For photographers working in macro photography, this is not a problem at all.

Features of the I-50U lens

1. The lens is very sharp, as it was used for enlargers and had to transmit the smallest details. Its sharpness is great for macro photography.

2. The diaphragm when closed gives "nuts" in the bokeh, since it has only 6 blades. The lens was not intended for artistic photography, so you shouldn't blame it. The lens cannot boast a huge aperture. The maximum aperture value is F / 3.5 like any whale lens.

3. I50U is very light, I personally really appreciate the lightness. For example, on a hike in addition to the universal lens, I will definitely take either reversible macro lens adapteror lens Vega-11U.

4. Has a coating, which only improves the optical properties of the lens. It would not be bad if Industar-50U had MS.

5. Works at full frame. An important moment. Unfortunately, I can’t indicate the exact magnification factor when using on the CZK.

Use with modern cameras

Lenses with an M39 mounting thread (for enlargers, M39 X 1 / 28.8), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on modern cameras, just select correct adapter. On lens reflex cameras can only work in macro mode (shoot small objects with a short focusing distance). On mirrorless cameras, it will be possible to achieve focus on infinity. The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com

For use on modern digital SLR cameras Canon EOS need M39-Canon EOS adapter, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) here. Also, an adapter M39-Canon EOS can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Canon EOS + M39-M42. In any case, the lens will always be focused at close distances.

An adapter is required for use on Nikon SLR cameras M39-Nikon F, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) without a lens and a chip here. Also, one adapter M39-Nikon F can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Nikon F + M39-M42. In any case, the lens will always be focused at close range.

For such a lens, I advise you to additionally buy macro rings with M42 thread, for example here.

How to use this lens with cameras of other systems (Pentax, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sigma etc.) - ask in the comments and you will be prompted. If you have any questions on compatibility and adapters, ask in the comments (comments do not require any registration at all, any user can add a comment).

Sample Photos

Examples of photographs on the I-50U are shown without processing. Everything shot in RAW is converted to JPEG with 80% quality, a watermark with EXIF shooting data and reduced size to 1600 * 1200. Attention: the photo was imprinted with an error of aperture value of 2.8. Wherever F2.8 should be F3.5.

Personal impressions:

The lens is very sharp, it was very easy for me to shoot with it. For a macro, it will be just right. If you are looking for a similar lens, you can look towards the usual Industar-50-2, which costs a penny. If you need a good macro, then I50U has two brothers - too, lenses for a photo enlarger, Industar-22U and Vega-11U. I-50U will give a strong increase when using macro ringthat allows you to shoot super-macro.

Conclusion:

Industar-50-U is currently one of the cheapest lenses with macro shooting capabilities. The lens has a very light weight. I50U 3.5 / 50 excellent sharpness, enlightened, but does not have a focus ring. I recommend I50U for macro.

  • Thank you!
Unusual lens. I didn’t even think that you can shoot it. At home, lying around doing nothing. I can’t test because of the lack of rings. Photos are cool.))

  • Andrei

Cool lens, nikada did not see this!

  • anonym

    Cool!

  • Which MC ??? Can't you see from the reflections in the pictures at the beginning of the review that there is no MS at all ?! The lens is sharp - of course (I had it). But he is very far from Vega-11U (it was only by printing with it that I was able, at one time, to truly appreciate the quality of my shooting optics).

    • Arkady Shapoval

I beg your pardon, in the old fashioned way instead of "enlightenment" I wrote multi-enlightenment. The bug has been fixed. Proof Link on Enlightenment.

  • Dmitriy

I shot it with such a lens, just putting it on the camera. By the way, you can only shoot macro

I bought one for 30 UAH, with a set of macro rings on the m39 (5 pcs). macro photos are very sharp and intense.

Six. Thank you for your attention.

        actually 8

        • Rodion

The I-50U-1 LZOS has eight. The I-50U has six.

I just opened my same pancake yesterday (I wanted to clean it - by the way - I put one of the lenses to my Nokia 6233 - it turns out macro + bokeh - that's just cool !!!)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Does Canon have a 250D? Canon is suitable for the CZK; they will not be able to shoot a person.

    Good afternoon,
found the same lens on the mezzanine and planned to attach it to the recently acquired Fujifilm X-E1, having previously bought the L39-FX joint ring. Unfortunately, I can’t figure out how to adjust the focal length in the transition ring settings in the camera settings.
Using the base numbers (21, 24, 28, 35, 50mm), I get "soap" - I can't get at least something in focus, observing everything around through Industar.
Tell me, did you have any software adjustments for adapting the lens? Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I do not use software add-ons.

  • Sergey Grigorovich.

And the price for him was 4 rubles.

  • Ivan

Good day to all!! And do not tell me what kind of I-61 lens, otherwise I found in the cabinet FED-2 and 2 lenses to it. With one figured out))
    Please reply to the mail.
    Thank you all.

    • Ivan

if on FED, then most likely I60 L / D, on DSLRs without serious "peeling" can only be used as a makrik, there is no such thing, only his mirror brother, Arkady made a separate review about its use (for which he thanks a lot, because the site has become a kind of educational program in the world of old optics) https://radojuva.com.ua/2013/05/obzor-i-61ld-2855/

  • Dmitriy

    I bought it for 150 r. I'm testing.

  • Kleen

I bought it today in a terrible state for 20 (twenty) rubles.
The diaphragm did not work. I sorted out a little podshamanil, got makrik at a very tasty price.
It will be necessary to devote another day to him, and take a picture of the flowers.

  • Sun

Got 2 lenses I50U-1 Lytkarinsky plant. The first in a light frame, and by TTX it matches yours, but the second, in a black frame, has F16 and 8 aperture blades. The latter is sharper and subjectively has a higher resolution.

  • Bocassa

Dear, I have just purchased I96U-3,5 / 50 ... without rings. For 5 UAH))). Along the way, even some kind of enlightenment ... I'm afraid to erase it ... need rings ... what, and how much? I really want to experiment with macro))) but I'm afraid not a single macro rack will allow this ... there is a FED ovskaya, but here we need, as I understand it, a microlift ... This will significantly increase the cost ... I will try it out)))

    • Vadim

      I respect, I bought for 9 UAH.

  • Bocassa

and I also wanted to ask ... did you shoot with your hands, or with a tripod?

  • Bocassa

I see in the photo only the ring KP 42 n ... is that enough?

  • Bocassa

on I96U of the aperture blades 5!)))

  • Leonid

Objectives I96U-3.5 / 50 can come across both with 5 and 6 aperture blades of the same manufacturer. The amazing thing is that they were released under the same number. I have several with the head. № 8712 They are with 5 lozenges, other numbers - from 6. Previously, they were produced I50U-1 3.5 / 50 with 6 petals, so it even printed grain from the film. It turns out that the number 1 (I50U-1) had permission in the center (according to the passport) at least 60 lines! But there were also I96U-1 with a shortened rim of 6 petals.

  • Nicholas

Found this in the basement on an old photo enlarger. His condition is good, only laden with flies, fleas and is not yet known by whom. Tell me how to wash so as not to damage enlightenment?

  • Nicholas

Actually, I cleansed myself surprisingly easily, I thought I would have to rub hard, I was afraid for enlightenment. But now another problem. The dust got inside ... If you try to figure out what my chances are. Everything seems to be in order with his hands, but he recently started taking photos and has never done anything like that. When assembling such things, can there be any difficulties?

    • Vadim

      Interested in the same question.

    • Alexey from Moscow

I got such a lens for free - I helped a friend and saw it. He gave it to me. Found that the diaphragm was not working. At first I was afraid to disassemble, then I tried it and within 5 minutes. it was already assembled with a working diaphragm (there the retaining ring fell off and the petals scattered over the lens). I took it all apart through the rear window, only you need to unscrew the aperture ring first.

  • Ed

is put on cameras with a focal distance of 28 mm then not only macro….

  • Alexander

I have I50U with 8 aperture blades ... You will need to clean and try
    shoot with X-Pro1 ...

  • Dubrovsky5

Is it possible to replace the lenses in the Industar 50 (M 39) lens with lenses from the Industar 50U (M 39), and leave the diaphragm the same?
