Nikon D5000 review

Nikon D5000 review

Nikon D5000 is a great entry-level camera. I I attribute Nikon D5000 to amateur cameras. The D5000 is interesting for its rotary display, good matrix, Live View mode and the ability to shoot video. Usually Nikon D5000 comes with one of the lenses 18-55mm F3.5-5.6  or  18-105mm F3.5-5.6Such a kit is called a whale kit. In this review, I describe the features of only the camera itself Nikon D5000 body.

The Nikon D5000 has an excellent built-in image editor, and easy controls that suit the photographer, or just a person who needs high-quality images. The camera even has such pShooting modes like: pet portrait, candle light, bloom, autumn colors, food, silhouette, sunset, beach, snow, etc. Not even a professional can figure it out.

Highlights of the Nikon D5000

  1. At the camera 12 megapixel CMOSthe matrix. 12 megapixels is more than enough for the basic purposes in photography. If you are still chasing megapixels, I advise you to read my article Battle of Megapixels. Matrix value same as other APS-C type cameras. Physical matrix size - This is one of the most important parameters in a digital camera. The amateur Nikon D5000 has the same size matrix as the more advanced brother D90 and the same as very good cameras Nikon D300s, D7000, D5100.

  2. By virtue of the APS-C type of matrix, the physical matrix size the Nikon D5000 is still 2.25 times smaller in area than on full-frame expensive cameras such as Nikon D700, D800(to), D3(x, s), D4. Also, this means that when using lenses, the viewing angle will be 1.5 times smaller than when using the same lenses on a 35mm film. More details in the article about crop factor.

  3. Matrix cleaning... Nikon D5000 has a sensor cleaning option. This will help postpone the trip to the service center for a real cleaning. In my experience, cleaning the sensor with a dust extractor does not completely protect the camera from dust build-up or condensation streaks. Therefore, be prepared that the "vacuum cleaner" is not a panacea, but only lengthening the time before going to the service or buying cleaning products. Usually, the matrix does not require cleaning for 2-3 years with the matrix cleaning function.

  4. Frame buffer in shooting mode, RAW is 9 shots. But 9 frames in the buffer is only available when off noise reduction modes at slow shutter speeds, noise reduction at high ISOautomatic distortion control and Active disabled D-lighting. Considering that when the shooting speed is 4 frames per second and the above settings are enabled, only 5 frames are placed in the buffer, the camera starts to slow down after the first second of shooting in burst mode. For comparison, more advanced Nikon D90 has 11 frames in its buffer, and Nikon D3100 as many as 13 frames.

Photo at Nikon D5000 at low ISO

Photo at Nikon D5000 at low ISO

  5. Shooting speed - 4 frames per second. This is just a little less than 4.5 frames per second for a more advanced Nikon D90, one frame per second more than Nikon D3100, and as much as Nikon D5100. I do not recommend chasing rate in the amateur camera segment, since frame buffer, usually such cameras are very small. Anyway, I can manage only 2.5 frames per second without problems on a little crumb Nikon D40.

  6. The camera display is indeed turning. The screen size is 2.7 inches, the number of dots is 230.000. I like the display. But now, he does not lean back, from right to left, but from top to bottom. And in order to sight on the hinged display, you need to either rotate it to a position as in cameras without a rotary display, or raise the camera itself a little higher so that the display remains at eye level. My camera had a booster (battery pack), while the rotary display could not fully recline due to the booster. Most likely, the Nikon D5000 rotary display was made with a tilt-down in order to keep the navigation buttons to the left of it. For example, brother Nikon D5100 the display rotates to the left, while there is no problem with the booster, but there are no buttons to the left of the display.

  7. The ISO of the camera varies from 200 to 3200. In fact, you can set ISO 100 to 6400but ISO 100 will be called Lo1and 6400 is Hi2. Lo1, Hi2 is a software cheat for ISO. I don't recommend shooting in ISO HI mode. Lo mode often helps out and, in general, really gives better quality compared to ISO 200. About low ISO on D5000, D90, D300, D300s, D700 etc. you can read in my ISO article Lo1... ISO 1600 is quite "working", everything that is higher - you need to be careful and remember about the noise.
  8. Ergonomics. The camera is quite convenient to control.. Of course, this is not a professional apparatus, but everything is extremely clear and simple. I recommend setting the Fn programmable button to change the ISO value, or to your liking.
  9. Additional functions. Correction of distortion. Interval shooting (which is not even in D90) The camera has bracketing exposure white balance and active D-lighting.
  10. The camera uses SD Flashcards. The maximum amount of card used can be 32GB when using SDHC cards.

    Photo on Nikon D5000

    Photo on Nikon D5000

  11. The camera can shoot video without autofocus with HD quality of 1280 * 720and lasting up to 5 minutes. The quality can be changed to 640 * 424 and lasting up to 20 minutes, or 320 * 240 and the same duration of 20 minutes. The video is exactly the same as Nikon D90. Do not think that 5 minute clips are not enough. 5 minutes is a decent interval for the video, personally, I have never had a little limit of 5 minutes. Given the fact that the Nikon D5000 still does not have the ability to focus when shooting video, you can use any lens for video, even old soviet. Video supports metering exposure with manual optics, such as Nikon 300mm f / 4.5 Nikkor-H Nippon Kogaku Japan Auto Non-AI. When the Live View mode is turned on, the aperture is locked to the set value so that when shooting video, change the aperture - turn off the Live View, change its values and turn on the Live View again. If you need a video with auto focus, then look at the models Nikon D3100, D5100, D7000, D800(to), D4. The lack of auto focus on the Nikon D5000 is a serious drawback for many users.

    Photo on Nikon D5000

    Photo on Nikon D5000

  12. Nikon D5000 uses pentaser mirror instead of a better pentaprism. The camera provides only 95% of the frame coverage when sighted through the optical viewfinder.
  13. The battery can withstand over 600-700 frames. Battery life may vary by lens, mode of operation, flash use, etc.
  14. Focusing. By the camera 11 focus points. They can work in 4 operating modes: one point, automatic, 3D tracking and dynamic selection. Focus points as many as Nikon D90, D5100, Nikon D3000, Nikon D200, Nikon D3100. Responsible for focusing Nikon Multi-CAM1000 system. The speed and accuracy of focusing very much depends on the lens and shooting conditions. In Live View, a contrast focusing mode is available that does not fail.
  15. BB. White balance The camera will be detected normally. If someone is not happy BB, you can always shoot in RAW and correct balances.

    Photo on Nikon D5000

    Photo on Nikon D5000

  16. Nikon D5000 no built-in focus motor, therefore, in order to be able to automatically focus - you need to use lenses AF S (lenses with built-in focus motor). Lenses marked AF will only work in manual focus mode.
  17. The camera has a built-in flash and a shoe for installing external flashes. Minimum excerpt when using the flash is 1 \ 200seconds. The camera does not support fast sync and command mode flash control.

If you choose a Nikon digital SLR camera, you can use my nameplate Generation of Nikon cameras which shows which class the camera belongs to and how long it was released. Nikon D5000 has the same matrix as Nikon D90, Nikon D300, Nikon D300s, which means that the quality of the photos will be the same as that of a professional Nikon D300s. Of course, professional cameras are more convenient to use, have a very high rate of fire and various very useful functions.

Nikon D5000 High ISO Photo Example

Nikon D5000 High ISO Photo Example

Personal impression:
The camera turned out to be very compact and small. After a day of filming on D200, Nikon D5000 seemed just a toy, but the photos showed excellent. The Nikon D5000 is the first amateur camera to feature video and a swivel display from Nikon. True, since the camera is amateur, then the possibility of autofocusing would not hurt the fans, since not everyone will agree to focus manually when shooting video. Now video without autofocus is archaism. Therefore, after the release Nikon D3100, the latter was rated very highly.
The picture is no worse than the Nikon D90. Ergonomics are good, in the classic Nikon style. Unfortunately, I do not recommend the Nikon D5000 for purchase. The video is better with the model Nikon D3100. The rotary display, in my opinion, is not entirely successful; it works with a rotary display Nikon D5100 much nicer.

Of course, the new models that replaced the Nikon D5000 are D5100, D5200 in many ways superior to the old woman:

Conclusion:

Nikon D5000 - good camera with a rotary display... Of the serious advantages - an excellent matrix and ergonomics, of the disadvantages - the lack of autofocus when shooting video. I recommend looking to the side instead of Nikon D5000 Nikon D3100, D5100, D3200.

Please tell me what is the difference between Nikon D5000 18x105mm and Nikon D7000 18x105mm.
    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Two different cameras with the same lens.

      • born

And the capabilities of the cameras are very different? Thanks.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, the possibilities are very different, since the cameras belong to different classes.

    • Lynx

      d7000 is heavier, in short.

  • Maria

Hello! Have you decided to change nikon D3000 and faced a choice (rather difficult for me since I am a student) nikon D90, D5000 or D3200? Please advise what to choose because now it is a choice between novelty (relative) and progress, and, as everyone puts it, "a trouble-free workhorse"

    • Oleg

Dear Maria, in order to get an intelligible answer, please specify a few things:
      - what the old camera does not like;
      - for what purposes do you need a camera at all (bombing weddings, cat photos, shooting your breakfasts with subsequent posting on social networks)?
      - what are the requirements for applicants?

      • Maria

Oleg, the old camera does not suit the matrix (it seems to me that it is out of date). The camera is used most often when traveling (I really like beautiful landscapes and architecture), but even on trifles like a family album and the like, social media plans are also planned. Of the requirements, I would like to do without problems with optics - this is the main thing, the shooting speed also matters. In the d5000, the rotary display and the lack of video autofocus annoy me, but the number of shooting modes suits me, the d90 is an excellent camera, although I'm not sure that I have grown to it, and the d3200, in comparison with the d5000 and d90, seems to me just about nothing, if I may say so . Sorry for the confused description, but this is what came to mind after much deliberation about the advantages of one camera over others.

        • Anonymous # 2

Awl for soap is obtained if you choose from your options. D90 and D5000 are also obsolete applicants like the D3000. The D3200 differs mainly in a bucket of megapixels. And if you dig and get crazy on the D7100? Here there is a really powerful device, and used can already be found at a very reasonable price.

        • BB

The 5000th was the first in this line, it is damp, the D90 is a good option, in general, but the matrix is also a bit old.

If you want growth - look towards D7100, or at least D7000, you can search for a used one.
The rotary display is a pretty good thing, very handy in some situations. If you choose from a used one with a rotatable display - then the D5100 is a good matrix (the same as in the d7000), a balanced body kit, but there is no motor and exposure metering with off-chip optics (unlike the D7000).

Newer cameras (D3200 / 5200/7100) have more MegaPixels, which means higher requirements for optics.

PS at the very arsenal now D5100 and D7100

Well, there is an article with a pivot table:

          • Maria

Thank you, I’ll try to take a closer look at the D5100, but in addition to the D7000, what other Nikons work with non-chip optics? Does the D90 work?

            • BB

              D90 is not.
From Arkady's article: 'The exact list of cameras that support automatic exposure metering with non-CPU lenses

          and don't you consider Canon?

          • Maria

Denis, Canon will consider if it will not yield to Nikon (until I have acquired optics). Which Canon cameras would you recommend? Canon cameras say more optics?

            • Denis

Maria, I have a Nikon D5100, I did not use canon
but in this thread the gurus jokingly scold Nikon
              https://radojuva.com.ua/2016/01/nikon-af-p-dx-18-55-g/
Objectively, Canon is better now (Nikon has to catch up)

            • Oleg

Maria, Canon can be very upset with its ergonomics after Nikon.
D7000 is a very good option, with the exception of the controversial skinton and not always adequate autofocus (from personal experience).
D7100 is really good! There are practically no negative reviews on the network (with the exception of rare idiots). In it, and with the color from the camera JPEG, the full order, and autofocus at a height, and the functionality at the level.

              • Oleg

Here, Comrade Bright, with his tactical examples, often confirms that the D7100 is a very worthy device.

              • brighty

D7100 will be a little expensive and complicated for Mary, as it seems to me, she is a student after all. But the D5300 to the very point. The camera is just incredibly good for its price and amateur positioning. In addition, it is newer than 7100, and although it lacks some of the functions and devices inherent in advanced cameras (pentaprism, an additional LCD screen, a second tuning wheel, programmable buttons, a second memory slot), but it has a lot of necessary pribluda which are not in 7100, but I would like to have, for example, a rotary screen, full HD 1920x1080 video 60 fps, wi-fi, an express 4 processor, and it costs a good $ 300 cheaper.

              • kotofei

In order to talk about ergonomics, you probably need to shoot at least a couple of sessions with this carcass. You definitely did not hold the 5000th in your hand, otherwise you wouldn’t stutter about ergonomics. It is small and not comfortable. Fold your thumb and forefinger together in an “OK” gesture - this is how you will hold the 5000D. From this, of course, its other pluses stem from, however, fading against the background of the UPC. In general, 5000D as the ONLY camera is not appropriate in my opinion.

PS Let's remember about the rubber bands? I like to troll the owners of nikon with rubber bands - they fall for it so easily =)

              • Valery A.

Yes, he kept, - a shot sparrow. Let me tell you about myself: it so happened that I have several nikons, large (such as d200) and small. And it is equally convenient to hold everything in your hand, small ones are even more convenient - you can use one hand, without support. My hand, I think, is slightly larger than average. And the grip on all cameras is as follows: the little finger (of the right hand) goes under the camera, and so on. supports the camera from below, so you do not need to firmly grip the camera handle, and your thumb freely walks on the wheel, on the AF-l button. And you keep “OK”, don't.

              • Valery A.

By the way, the bright one did not advise 5000D, but D5300, for its lover - "with a head". It is more interesting to try and have different lenses, except for the whale one.

  • Irina

Hello! Tell me when choosing from the Nikon D5000 and Sony Alpha SLT A37, which is better? I would like to take high-quality pictures at night and day, to be able to shoot video, and at the same time to make the device fast (on / off, burst shooting (cars, etc.)).

    • Dmitry

The video on the Nikon D5000 is mediocre. As for Sonya, I don’t know.

  • Alexey

Good afternoon. Tell me, please, is the Nikon D5000 suitable for the subject shooting of small products (such as jewelry)? Does he have the ability to control shooting modes from a computer?

    • BB

If a matrix of 12 megapixels is enough for your tasks, then it will do.

For macro shooting, the 'body kit' is more important, and not the camera itself - the lens, macro rings, + light.

Shooting modes on the device are switched with a 'wheel', so you can't turn this wheel from a PC, and why is it for macro photography? There is a proprietary Nikon utility for controlling cameras. I used it for a very long time with D5100. I could be wrong, but in my opinion there is only focus and release from the functionality. You can save images either directly on a PC or on a memory card of the device.
Focusing on the macro is better by hand (jewelry will not creep away or fly away), so the use of such a program, IMHO, is not very justified.

  • Alexey

BB, thanks for the answer. I've used Canon G5 before. Its 5 megapixel was enough for the head, but the camera, unfortunately, served its purpose ... The native Canon utility allowed setting almost all exposure parameters from the computer, which was very convenient, and I could still see the result I would get without clicking the shutter button ... Now I choose between D5000, D3100, D60, D5200 - all used. Can you advise something in my case?
I'm not worried about the lens, lightbox and other attributes yet, there is something left, something will have to be purchased - I'm ready for it ...

    • Dmitry

To shoot a subject, it is important to get into sharpness. If you have a manual macro lens, or mounted through the rings, it will be more convenient to aim manually by live view. But the Nikon D5000, and even the D3100, has a display resolution of only 230 thousand pixels, which will be not enough for a comfortable focus on live view (a grainy picture). Later Nikon D5100 and above come with a screen but 920 thousand pixels, which is enough for high-quality focus on the screen.

If there is an AF-S autofocus macro lens, then the D5000 / D3100 is a good option.

      • Alexey

Thanks for the answer. Do Nikons have such software at all as I described? I built my Canon and saw sharpness on a 21 ″ computer monitor

        • Dmitry

          You can try ControlMyNikon

        • Jury

there is Camera Control Pro, but for money or on a root tracker and without them :)

    • anonym

Alexei, look at cameras without an optical low-pass filter. Its absence should have a positive effect on sharpness. Moreover, Nikon already has several budget models: D3300, D5300, D7100.

      • BB

I would not call the D7100 budget))

        • anonym

D7100 in the secondary market has already fallen significantly in price. It is quite possible to find a whale for $ 550-580 with minimal mileage. A new bodysuit costs $ 590-600

          • BB

Answered below, $ 600 is no longer a 'budget' option

            • anonym

Thanks to everyone who responded :)

    • BB

Better would be D5200 or D5100 - matrices are better than others from your list, the display resolution is normal + it is rotatable - sometimes very convenient.

The utility that I wrote about allows you to view the resulting image on the PC display (in LiveView mode, of course) before the release, i.e. on the PC, the picture from the display is 'duplicated', but with a slight delay
Then it's better to connect an external display via HDMI - the D5100 definitely has such a connector, and newer cameras also (about the older ones - I'm not sure, see their specifications).

  • BB

We (Ukraine) have real, very few offers at an adequate price, very, very few (I searched myself, there are a lot of scammers).
The body price in online stores starts at $ 640 (since the summer, the price in $ has not changed). With the current salaries (considering the $ rate) this is not a budget option, while the new D5200 body costs $ 360, the D3200 body can be found for $ 260, and for $ 380 you can buy the D3300 kit, from a shelf in the supermarket.
(D7100, for example, is not on the shelves, those more body).

Hello, I was fond of, please tell me which autofocus lens to buy on the d5000, at the moment I need a universal, but high-quality focus on the photographer’s courses :), Thank you

    • Dmitry

      Take nikkor 18-105

  • Anna

Arkady, your help is very necessary!
I need a camera, but rather not for photos, but for video, only for video. I shoot a video for YouTube, I want a very good picture. But 5 minutes of shooting is not enough for me! You need at least 30 minutes. you will get quality, but also the price so that I do not "eat"
Shooting will be both indoors and outdoors.
I really need the advice of a professional.

DSLRs have an amazing property - each of them occupies an optimal place in the price-quality series, at least starting from the 2004 models (d70, which is now 12 years old). The same thing happens with the d5000 - the matrix allows you to confidently shoot on ISO up to 3200 and even have some kind of video together with live, which makes life easier on a manual lens. What's bad for his money?) Add to this a rotating screen and 4 frames per second, which makes you feel a little cooler than the owners of the more recent d3100))

I’ll note to you, dear, that the infrared port also compares favorably with the more recent d3100, and the DXO website gives higher ratings to the 12-megapixel matrix (with the exception of noise). And for myself, I decided that the choice of d5000 vs d3100 is completely justified for me

Do not mention dxomark in a decent society. They start laughing and throw them in slippers. Sobsno, I'll be the first =)
For starters, read what they indicate there in the "sports" column. As soon as I found out that they resize photos to 8 megapixels and only then compare / measure, the trust in this resource disappeared. Essno, the more megapixels, the higher the score .. well, they think so and help the sales of new cameras.
        Google.

        • Evgeny_d5000

It’s they who drive themselves to create the same type of conditions for different cameras. And we, end users, also look at prices and choice. For my year and a half, I shot five videos on my d5000 and all for the sake of pampering, they wrote to the phone for a practical purpose :) In short, everyone is happy with the camera, although I want to upgrade in favor of the d5100 for curiosity

            and better d5200

  • Nicholas

Thank you so much for the review, it’s decisive in choosing, for my purposes this kind of camera is needed, thanks for the obektivnost and thanks for the review Nikon d80

  • Sergey Iz Ivanovo

5 years have passed since the review ... Alexey is YOUR cat in the photo? If yes, here are a few photos on Nikon D5100 and Nikon D3000, we can say, SISTERS ... THE SAME breed. Most cats ... Looks like this is the breed! So, the review of the camera and test shots gave answers to questions about "favorites"!

All is well, but kill I don't understand why autofocus when shooting video. How can you shoot autofocus video? And at the expense of 5 minutes of video. It's about nothing at all. Well, please tell me what 5 minutes. So you need to film a concert or a lecture, or ... whatever. So what? How? No, of course I understand that there are video cameras, there is Lumix in the end. But to say that 5 minutes is enough ... And one more thing “Considering the fact that Nikon D5000 still has no ability to focus when shooting video ..” And for video shooting there are lenses with manual focus and aperture.

    • Evgeny_d5000

So then it is, but it’s better to be able to disable AF than not to have it initially. Autofocus is important for a beginner who wants the camera to do everything for him, and an experienced user can also shift this task to the camera. Actually, therefore, our d5000, perhaps the last device with non-autofocus video

    Good day.
    I ask you to please.
Pridbala in the pawnshop D5000, that is not possible bulo there probity. From the first sight the prazivniki said, scho not great. In real life 103 000 appeared.

He can run a million, this is how lucky. Usually 150.000 makes it easy, for an ordinary amateur photographer, 50.000 is enough for 2-3 years.

Good day! Tell me what to do, the following problem was revealed:
There is a D5000 and when the Yongnuo 50mm F1.8 is connected, even to the switched off device, the green light constantly blinks and the battery sits down at 0. Only turning on and then turning off helps. Also, if you remove and insert the battery, the light also blinks. If left on and then off, it flashes.

On the native 18-55, such garbage does not occur.

Who faced such a problem? Carry a carcass for repair? Or is there something wrong with the lens?

    • Konstantin

Logically, if the problem does not appear on the old lens, then there is a problem with the new equipment ...

    • Denis

The same problem on the D5000 with Yongnuo 35mm F2 periodically occurs, I do not know what the problem is and how to solve it.

    • Denis

Eugene, please share information - have you found the cause of the problem?

    • Alexander

I also own Yongnuo 35mm 2.0, and also blinks in the off state
green light bulb. I checked it on two D3000 and D7000, everywhere the same problem. If you pull out the memory card, the light stops flashing. Why so - I do not know. I checked it on D60, there is no such problem.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely the lens is periodically connected and disconnected from the camera. You can attach / disconnect any other lens with the camera off, the memory card activity light will also blink. You will need to add this information to the YN35 / 2.0 review.

good day! Please tell the newcomer not particularly demanding, only the high quality of the photo will be interesting day and night for photos of a family nature, landscape, architecture, which of the DSLRs you recommend, thanks in advance)

  • Alex

Good afternoon! I always refer to your blog if I have any questions. But then I started to get a little confused. The situation is - I have nikon d5000. An amateur who really liked it (he started working not with autotuning, but with PSMA), and there are certain successes (including excellent reviews from Nikon ambassadors). There is a desire to move on. But after re-reading and analyzing the situation, I came to the conclusion that after q5000 there is no point in taking q5X00, is it better to take q7X00 right away or what do you recommend? (there is a variant with used D300s and D90, D700). But again, after reading and analyzing, I come to 7X00. Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

D7000-D7100-D7200-D7500 will be just right, you can still look at the full-frame D600-D610-D750. D300s / D90 give almost the same result in the picture as the d5000 (there is a similar matrix). D700 is very outdated and more suitable for experienced users.

      • Alex

        Thank you!

  • Alexandra

Good afternoon) tell me, on which Nikon D5000 can you recommend a wide-angle lens) ??

    • Arkady Shapoval

      And what is the budget?

    • anonym

Tokina, she had three widths per crop, at 2.8 and 4. As far as I remember, 11-16 2.8, 12-24 4, 12-28 4. The zoom loop and big ha were frayed from the problems. But for their money, these are excellent lenses, and like any lenses they must be chosen between copies.

  • Yurchik

    Hello Radozhiva and its author.
Very useful articles. And thanks to you, I began to not only navigate the Nikon lineup. But also gain knowledge on the photo case.
    Thank you.

By the way, a photo of the yard with cars, in the first seconds, it seems that this is a toy model. :-) With toy buildings and cars. :-)

  • Liza

Can you please tell me how to set up my nikon d5000 to get such photos and what settings are needed for serial sharp shooting?

    • B. R. P.

Enable burst mode, disable long exposure noise reduction, high ISO noise reduction, automatic distortion control, and Active D-Lighting. Use AF-A or AF-C focus modes, AF area selection 3D tracking or dynamic. Shoot, for example, in aperture priority mode (A on the shooting mode dial) and Auto-ISO. In the auto-iso settings, set the maximum exposure no longer than 1 \ 250 sec. If you have a fast lens, it is advisable to slightly cover the aperture. A fast memory card is also desirable.

  • Dmitriy

If you choose from D60 and D5000, which is better to take?

    • Ivan

      D5000 of course!
