We delete only the necessary. Photo tricks. Part 5

Today in photo tricks - block file deletion.

Very often, when there is free time and there is nothing more to do, I like to view the shot material on the camera display. On the display I often check sharpness and success of the frame. Bad frames I delete. Sometimes, a whole series of pictures is deleted. The hand constantly presses the "basket" button (the button is responsible for deleting pictures). After the series, a good, successful shot can go. And, by inertia, a good frame, too, can often be deleted. Therefore, I highly recommend:

  1. Try as little as possible to view and delete photos on the camera... This reduces battery life and does not always give an accurate picture of the shot on the camera's small display. Very often good shots are removed by inertia. In general, photos on a computer monitor can look completely different. And very often on a computer, you can simply re-frame, improve, and sometimes just save a bad shot.
  2. Do not save on small memory cards or their number... Most often, you need to delete "extra photos" to save space. Set aside a budget for a capacious memory card - you will hardly regret it someday. I very often use 32GB cards for shooting, and I do not care about the place for the photos at all - it focuses more on the photo, rather than thinking about the fact that the space is about to run out. Don't believe that high-capacity cards are slower. High-capacity cards are also fast and slow. Well, if you are afraid that all your pictures are on one card - use several memory cards.
  3. Many cameras have a special snapshot lock button. On Nikon digital SLR cameras, it is designated as a “key”. There is such a button on Nikon D80, D90, D300(s) D7000, D200 and all full-frame ones. On cameras of the younger series, the "key" button is combined with the "AE-l / AF-L“. Using this button, you can block the deletion of a particular photo. Simply, when viewing a well-formed photo, press the "key" button once and the picture will no longer be deleted using the "basket" button. I lock the deletion of my most important and valuable pictures so I don't accidentally erase them. To disable the blocking of deletion - just press the key back.
  4. Attention - when formatting The blocking rule does not work and all pictures will be deleted from the memory card. If you accidentally deleted all the pictures from the card, you can restore them with a special program. I use Handy Recovery. The main thing, after formatting - do not remove anything else on the same memory card.

Really helps?

Yes, I have had cases on a hikewhen blocking the most important frames saved from their senseless removal. And also, those who like to shoot video do not always orient themselves when viewing where the photo is, and where the video is. The video looks more blurry when viewed and is often deleted under the pretext of a bad photo. I also deleted a couple of times an interesting video (which I shoot very rarely on Nikon D90) due to the fact that the picture seemed "washed", although, in fact, it was a video file. Some of my friends photographers very often use several 8GB cards, in which case, to save some of the data. I do not bother about this, and losing a memory card or accidentally formatting it, too, is a risky business. But video operators are simply obliged to use a large number of storage media, since video takes ten times more volume.

It is advisable to use capacious memory cards, or have spare ones. It is better to delete pictures on the computer display. The most important images for you can be protected by a lock from deletion.

Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

    Great green spring photo)

Or, if the “especially needed frame” has been deleted, it can often be restored from the card, for this I used the free Avira UnErase software. Fortunately, only once :)
True, the chance of recovery decreases if you continue shooting after deleting ...

It's just that if you are on a hike, as I wrote, you won't be able to get to the laptop in the near future, and it is impossible to stop shooting.

Here, by the way, the second memory card will help.

I take a lot of pictures, and my kids like to put their nose in my camera, then when I look at the photos, I find out that the frames are out of order, i.e. 2-3 frames removed. Perhaps they were really not successful, but I would like to evaluate the staff myself. Each frame immediately after shooting is not convenient to protect. Maybe there is a device that can put protection on every frame. It would be easier for me to remove protection at home than to lose some of the frames.

I’m sure that on some cameras there is such a function, but on many of those for which I have mentioned, there is no such function.

There is also a flag on the map itself, by moving it, you generally block any entries and wipes.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Thank you.

      • Vladislav

Yes, but you can’t shoot either

When using several cards, they are recommended to be folded in a coffer (or other place) in a certain way:
which have already been used - unfold with the back side. Then it is immediately clear which card is used and which is not.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the idea. I usually lay out different pockets.

It is also bad to delete individual pictures once again because it leads to uneven wear of the memory card. It turns out that some clusters are used more times than neighboring ones, and the number of write / erase cycles, as you know, is not infinite. As a result, the memory card may glitch (read: fail) earlier than expected due to the fact that some clusters have “died”.
Therefore (although this is, of course, not so convenient) it is best to “shoot” the memory card to the end, save the necessary pictures on your computer, and erase everything else in one fell swoop.

    • Vladislav

Valery, in fact, the memory card controller is quite "smart", and therefore he distributes the records to the cells, taking into account their wear

  • Vladimir Kaverin

I once read long ago that deleting photos from a memory card in a camera greatly reduces the life time of a card. There was something about rewriting cycles, etc.
It has long been a habit to never remove anything from the card.
I drop it on the computer, rake it, format the card.

please tell me how to do it, I have a lock, the name is protection against accidental deletion of pictures, and because of this lock I can’t delete pictures, I need to remove it, I need

WHEN DELETING ALL THE PICTURES JAMMED WRITTEN - WAIT - NO ONE BUTTON DOES NOT WORK THE PHOTO CAMERA IS CONSTANTLY IN THE INCLUSED STATE. WHY AND WHAT TO DO?

    • Vitaly N

To begin, squeeze the caps, a bad manner.
Have you tried turning it off?
Since you need pictures on the card, you can pull out the card for it. Will not help - pull out the battery.

  • SKY HD

Never delete anything on the card from the camera! Just buy another memory card! Viewing pictures on the camera is almost pointless. In fact, you are watching previews. That is, of course, you are looking at the full photo, but in the size of the preview and on the big screen the same photo will look different. In fact, it’s even difficult to evaluate how sharp the frame is. (I have a canon of 100d per 1 million dots per screen. That is, an excellent screen with good color reproduction and even here viewing almost makes no sense ..)

The only case when you really need to view the material is in sighting frames, in order to evaluate the histogram for overexposures and the RAW viewing profile should be configured as monochrome. Then you can still estimate how the light falls.

    Do not thank!

    • Novel

“Don't delete anything” - yeah, but what if my card costs from 1500 for 64GB? :)

I agree about the previews. 5D2 gives a terrible bruise, BB is lying terribly. It’s good that I didn’t take the first one, there’s nothing about the screen there.
