AUTO Sears MC 135mm F2.8

Please note that there are several versions of AUTO Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm, one of which is Mod. 202 had the ability to macro photography. My Sears instance is older and has an MDF of just 1.5 meters. I can not say anything about the optical circuit and other data. AUTO Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm bayonet mount K for use on the system Pentax

Features of the Sears MC 2.8 135 Lens

1. Focusing on the lens is comfortable and enjoyable. Infinity starts at 30 meters. The MDF of the lens is only 1.5m. For example, with a similar lens Jupiter-37A, MDF is 1.2 meters. When focusing, the front element moves forward 2-3 cm. The focus ring rotates 250 degrees, the course is smooth, and the ring itself is rubberized. Of course, the lens has manual focus only.

2. The lens aperture has only 6 blades, which is quite small for a lens of this class. The depth of field indicator has a definition for F5.6, 11, 22. The aperture values themselves can be set to the values: 2,8 4 5,6 8 11 16 22
3. AUTO Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm has a built-in lens hood, which is not very effective, but still helps to avoid flare. Hood and MS poorly helps the lens in the fight against flare.

4. Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm has good build quality. Almost all lenses of the last century have very good build quality.
5. Multi-enlightenment the Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm lens is multi-layered. But AUTO Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm is afraid of flare and side light.

6. Front filter diameter - standard 52mm. When focusing, the front lens group does not rotate, you can safely use light filters. Either way, find protective filter not be difficult. Usually, professional photographers who know a lot about the image and often have to play with various filters to get the desired effect use old optics.

7. Lenses of 135 / 2,8 class are very much appreciated, as they can be used as wonderful portrait objects. They are very strong blur background. Lens Made in Korea. In the east they know how to make high-quality equipment.

Image quality

Immediately make a reservation that the Sears Auto / MultiCoated 135 / 2.8 lens from this review survived the repair and after repair lost all its sharpness. The picture is obtained with a soft effect at any aperture value, spherical aberrations and strong ones on the face HA. But, as the lens owner claims, the lens had normal sharpness before repair. Anyway, the picture on the lens is quite interesting, I really liked the bokeh, whether in combination with a soft effect, or really, the Sears Auto / MultiCoated 135 / 2.8 lens has an excellent "picture". I did not observe distortions and vignettes on the cropped matrix. If you are looking at buying such a lens, I advise you to take a look at our Soviet similar lens Jupiter-37A, or any other of section about the best Soviet lenses 85-135mm.

Sample Photos at Sears 135mm f / 2,8

All photos from this review were taken on camera. Pentax K10D in DNG (RAW) format, converted using Adobe Lighroom to JPEG Q80%, no processing, only reduced to 1600 * 1200 and imprinted data from EXIF. Perhaps not all aperture values from Exif true, as I wrote them from memory.

How to use Sears MC 1: 2.8 f = 135mm on modern Pentax cameras:

I used a Sears Auto / MultiCoated 135 / 2.8 lens on the camera Pentax K10D. It’s a pity that Pentax does not have the ability to drive optics at full frame (in the spring of 2012, Pentax does not have a full-frame camera). Pentax K10D automatically meters exposure at full aperture. When mounted on a Pentax, Sears will always have its diaphragm open and will only close during the shutter release. The only inconvenient moment when shooting with closed apertures is that the camera does not understand that the aperture is closed, and always sets the shutter speed for a fully open aperture. A sound signal or a green hexagon in the viewfinder will notify about the focusing accuracy.

I don’t know how on k10, k20 and k5 you set the manual mode, press the green button and ... lo and behold, the device will set the exposure at the closed aperture
PS Jumping only works naturally on lenses with a K mount

“I don’t know how on k10, on k20 and k5 you set the manual mode, press the green button and… lo and behold, the device will set the exposure at the closed aperture”. You can describe this process in more detail to the kettle. I tried it, but something doesn’t work, I read somewhere else that simultaneously pressing the green button and the trigger, but it’s not convenient. Or advise where to read about it. Thank you.

Simply point the device at the subject, press the green button, on the K200D it is slightly further than the shutter button, and then if, in your opinion, the lighting of the subject does not change, you do not need to press the green button again. And if the metering is at a central point, it is desirable that the exposure is not exposed in black, there will be an overexposed frame.

And on Nikon mount such lenses exist?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Must be.

I came across an instance under m 42 but after 3 hours of working with a metal saw or a knife, etc., infinity appeared))) an interesting objektivchik

I have this glass for M42 thread, a very nice thing. Got me in perfect condition. Soft effect, unlike the instance described by the author, is devoid. In terms of sharpness and pleasantness, bokeh, I would even say, is no worse than Tair-11. Just a magnificent lens, one of the most beloved.

  • anonym

if really not worse than Tair 11, then I am terribly lucky. I bought it complete with a wardrobe trunk, instructions and a 3X macroconvector for 40 bucks ...

I came across a version of the lens for Sony MD mount
according to tactile sensations - it is assembled just fine, you take it in your hands and you understand - a quality thing. Specifically, my copy was assembled in Japan, not Korea.
Further, the fact of my inattention, the lens has a Minolta MD mount, was a surprise.
There are two types of adapters. With a minus lens and without a lens. Using an adapter with a lens, we get infinity in return for a loss of quality. Without a lens there will be no infinity, but we will not lose in quality .. It would seem to be a difficult task. BUT EXIT IS! unscrew 3 screws and change the mount to Nikon. Canon systems require the Nikon -Canon EOS adapter AF EMF adapter.
and voila, we have infinity and picture quality without any lenses. I really hope - it can be useful to someone.

Sonkovsky mount will still have to be used as an adjustment ring and work with a file. The Sears 135 \ 2.8 assembled in Japan is quite good in optical characteristics.

    Here is my Korean Orion 135mm f / 2.8

  • Igor_K

After reading the review, I became interested in this lens, looked for it, found it, bought it, Nikon \ AI mount, slight signs of fungus, but not critical, the condition is generally good, the dimensions, weight and construction are very pleased, the price is $ 30 with delivery. According to the results of the first quick test, I can say with confidence that in terms of sharpness - this glass is all right, not a "razor", but far from being "soap" even at "2,8". HA on the open side are present, but far from “godless”, contrast and color saturation are a little low, on the ancient D70, I had to add a little in the settings. Particularly pleased with the "bokeh" - this is clearly his strong point, on the forums "pentaxists" he is praised for it, though a model with a macro mode. But finding such a model with a Nikon bayonet mount is very problematic, I think I was lucky anyway. It hasn’t come to a portrait test yet, but Arkady’s review presents them well enough, and that’s why he was looking for such a lens, the picture was “hooked”. I think that a piece of glass can be classified as an inexpensive creative, it draws much better than it is worth. Below I will try to attach some of my test shots, I immediately apologize for the complete absence of even the slightest hint of artistic plots, I shot solely for the purpose of determining the technical features of the lens. All pictures were taken on D70, sharpness is medium-high, contrast and saturation are the same, shot in the on-camera Jpg, reduced to 40%, the lower image at “4”. Arkady - huge respect for the review!

    • Igor_K

Sorry, the "bell" attached above was shot on an open "2,8", with a flash "on the forehead", achieved HA on metal surfaces, achieved if you look closely, but in my opinion, they are not so scary as for old glass. I wanted to attach the picture that was taken from below, taken at “4”, the sharpness is quite acceptable even at the edges, though on the crop, in addition - he is not so afraid of “lateral” lighting, CA - tolerant, “beige glow” around light objects Hardly ever.

      • Igor_K

Sharpness and CA test at open aperture, distance close to MDF, “brutal” illumination, in order to increase the DD of the image (D70 naturally failed, it lacks “D-lightning” as a class). We observe the presence of an average level of CA, and quite acceptable sharpness on the open. These are certainly not modern ED lenses with a nano coating, but after all, this is not a "makrushnik" at all, it is not logical to expect any macro-contrast from it.

        • Igor_K

For comparison, the same scene on aperture closed to “4”. HA disappeared, sharpness increased slightly. Bokeh, as for such an MDF, is very acceptable (IMHO).
My conclusion is that it is quite a worthy piece of glass, for a perfectly reasonable price.

          • Igor_K

Another example on the open, the bokeh circles are bright and not “bubble”.

            • Igor_K

A sobering "fly in the ointment" - on the open one, if you do not add contrast (Normal position) in the camera and lazily shoot in j-pe-ge, then spherical aberrations are still present, largely due to this and the "softness" of the picture.

              • Igor_K

And in conclusion - just an on-camera flash in the forehead, from 2 meters on the open one, in order to show the depth of field, similar to a close-up portrait, sorry, there was no better model at the moment, but this one has expressive eyes!
I would be glad if my little addition to the wonderful review of Arcadia turns out to be useful to someone. Good spring pictures to all comrades! Dear Author - thanks again for the wonderful review!

  • Ivan

Optics is old. On open software 5.6 is sharp as an infection. The cost for 2017 in the condition for prevention is about $ 10 decent, not more than 40. The brand is not popular and rare so you can find decent optics at an anti-crisis price.
