Nikon D5100 review

Nikon D5100 review

I want to write everything at once about the Nikon D5100 - it's just awesome multimedia harvester, which manages to squeeze just the prohibitive image quality. In this review, information is only about the camera itself Nikon D5100 body. Very often, the Nikon D5100 is sold along with universal lenses, and this set is called Kit. Usually in a set Nikon D5100 Kit such lenses as:

The best option is an 18-200mm lens, it is enough for all occasions - from a wide angle for a landscape or a small apartment, to photographing birds and bunnies. If you still need to start somewhere, then the kit lens 18-55m is quite suitable, and do not believe that the kit lens is so terrible, just important how to take pictures, and not on what technique. For portrait shooting, I advise you to look towards the lens Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor, and as a good sharp fast aperture fixed lens for every day can act Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor.

Important points:

Matrix Nikon D5100 matrix based Nikon D7000. The matrix Nikon D7000 can give out a picture high dynamic range, excellent color reproduction and low noise at high ISO. The Nikon D5100 does the same. When I took the first test shots on Nikon D5100 and ISO 6400, I was just amazed at the image quality. The result was really very juicy and lively picture, and this is at 16,2 megapixels, because in this review there are many night photos as examples. ISO camera can be set from value 100 to 25,600, values ISO 12.800. и ISO 25.600. are denoted as Hi1 и Hi2, I do not recommend shooting at such high ISO.

Nikon D5100 installed CMOS 16.2-megapixel sensor. Yes, the Nikon D5100 has as much as 16,2MP, which is the same as that of Nikon D7000 and full frame Nikon D4. More megapixels can only be found in the very expensive Nikon D3x, Nikon D800,D800E, D3200, D600, D5200 (at the time of writing). The number of megapixels is not a serious indicator of the quality of a photograph, but still, the more the better. If you are chasing megapixels, I advise you to pay attention to my note Battle of Megapixels. I shoot 6.2 megapixel without any problems Nikon D40I advise you to go to the review page Nikon D40 and make sure that even at 6.2MP you can get an excellent image result.

Nikon D5100 uses a sensor manufactured by Sony, the same sensor is found in cameras:

Actually, the matrix is the heart of the camera, and the better it is, the better your photographs will be. Nikon D5100 has the same matrix size as the more advanced ones Nikon D7000, D90, D300s. The Nikon D5100 APS-C sensor available, which means that the matrix is 2.25 times smaller in area than the matrix of full-frame SLR cameras, such as Nikon D700 or D3s. This entails an effect. crop factor. When using lenses from full-frame cameras, the viewing angle will be narrower than on film or in a full frame. More details in the article Crop Factor.

Other important points that really affect the operation and functionality of the camera

  1. Large rotary display. The display has 921.000 points. Nikon D5100 uses the same number of pixels as the camera D3, D3s, D3x, D700, D300, D300s, D90, D7000, D3200 и Nikon D5200
  2. Very fast EXPEED-2 processor, with which the camera shows excellent speed.
  3. Nikon D5100 uses 11 focus pointsfor which the focus module is responsible Nikon Multi-CAM 1000. The same module is on such cameras as Nikon D90, D3100, D3000, D80, D200 and D5000. Focusing is accurate. Focusing speed is highly dependent on the lens and shooting conditions.
  4. Measurement exposure implemented using a 420-pixel sensor, the same as that of Nikon D80, D90, D60, D40x, D50, D5000 and D3100. The camera measures the exposure perfectly, the only one, because Active is on D-lighting the camera sometimes exposes the frame.
  5. The shooting speed is 4 frames per second. This is just a little less than 4.5 fps for a more advanced Nikon D90. 4 fps is enough for any type of shooting. Even a full-frame professional Nikon D800 can shoot a maximum of 4k \ s. Personally, I always have enough even 2.5 frames per second on my old woman Nikon D40. A high rate of fire is needed only for certain situations. A high rate of fire requires a large frame buffer and a fast memory card. For example, when I reviewed the Nikon D5100, the camera used a slow 8GB SD flash drive. Since I was shooting in RAW for review, the camera was very slow after 2 seconds of shooting in fast mode. Due to the fact that RAW files from the camera weigh about 15mb, I had to wait a very long time until the files were written to the memory card. Indeed, the whole charm of fast continuous shooting at 4 fps can be estimated by shooting only in JPEG.
  6. Frame buffer when shooting in RAW format is 11 frames. This is as much as that of Nikon D90 when shooting in RAW. How much the camera will slow down during serial shooting will greatly depend on the buffer capacity. In an earlier model Nikon D3100, frame buffer is 13 pieces in RAW.
  7. Attention: Nikon D5100 Nikon's first amateur camera to use RAW with 14 bit color depth. This is very good news for fans of processing RAW photos. Unfortunately, like all Nikon amateur cameras, the D5100 does not have a choice of RAW compression levels or a choice of color depth.

    Example photo on Nikon D5100

Example photo on the Nikon D5100. Snowy glass.

  8. Full HD movie shooting 1980 * 1080, with maximum quality you can shoot videos up to 20 minutes long. Believe me, 20 minutes is enough for the video. You can choose different shooting modes in different quality. Another important detail to shoot video on the desired aperture, you first need to install it, and therefore already enable Live View and start recording. When Live View is on, aperture change is not available.
  9. Convenient menu and overall camera ergonomics. At first, it might seem that controlling the camera with one hand is difficult, but then you can quickly get used to the control.

Example photo on Nikon D5100 at high ISO

Example photo on Nikon D5100 at high ISO

  10. A bunch of useful additions - automatic correction of distortion, aberration, Active D-lighting, Breckening, Live View, Timelapse, etc. Important! Automatic correction of distortion and chromatic aberration is removed only when shooting in JPEG.
  11. The camera has one great feature - HDR. HDR takes two frames with different exposures and saves them in one file. Very comfortable and interesting. The HDR function is not available when shooting in RAW. The HDR function is conveniently programmed with the FN button.

Example photo on Nikon D5100 at very high ISO

Example photo on Nikon D5100 at very high ISO

  12. A little about the shortcomings - this is an amateur camera, because in the camera no many features from more advanced or professional cameras. Personally very important to me fast flash sync, flash command modeFine tune focus manual exposure metering and availability focus motor - Nikon D5100 doesn't have them. Highly I consider “picture braking” a strong drawback when sighting through Live View and approaching the image area 1 to 1 (or similar) - the picture slows down quite a lot. There is no such effect on Nikon D90. Such an approximation helps to very accurately sharpen the desired focus point.

All sample photos on the Nikon D5100 from this review were shot in RAW -> JPEG, without processing, only resized to 720 * 477 pixels with imprinted EXIF in order to be able to judge the shooting parameters. Please note that at high ISO photos are more or less acceptable.

Recommendations

In order to speed up focusing, use the optical viewfinder. When focusing in Live View, the focusing accuracy will be very high, but the speed will be very slow, since the camera and the lens will need to measure contrast at different focusing distances and only then put the lens in the desired position. When focusing through the optical viewfinder (through the eye), the camera is much quicker to cope with focusing. It is for this reason that older cameras such as Nikon D300, D300s, D700 etc., there are two Live View shooting modes. These are tripod mode and hand mode. In hand-held mode and Live View on, when you press the shutter button halfway, Live View turns off and autofocusing occurs through the phase sensors, after a successful focus is achieved, Live View turns on again.

If desperately needed maximum frame buffer, then you need to turn off all functions that reduce the number of photos in the buffer. I think you will be surprised when in paragraph 5 it is written about 11 frames in the buffer, but in reality there will be less of them. The number of frames that the buffer can fit is shown in the lower right corner of the viewfinder when you press the shutter button halfway. Usually, with noise reduction turned on for high ISOs and slow shutter speeds, as well as when active D-lighting the number of frames in the buffer drops sharply. Therefore, by disabling these functions you can get the claimed 11 frames. Well, if you do not need RAW, then in high-quality JPEG with advanced settings enabled 16 frames - and this is for 4 seconds of continuous shooting. It is unlikely that someone takes a burst of longer than 4-5 seconds.

When you place the camera in a case (in a photo bag), turn the display with the dark side out, and the LCD monitor in the middle so that the monitor does not scratch during transportation. If shooting in JPEG, I recommend turning on noise reduction at high ISOs and slow shutter speeds. For a saturated picture you can use Active D-lighting in HIGH mode. You can also configure the FN programmable button, which is located next to the flash up button. I usually program the FN button for the ISO control function.

Don't know what to choose?

Usually, a person who wants to buy a camera of this level stops at 2-3 Nikon models. it Nikon D3100, Nikon D5000, Nikon D5100, D5200. I recommend taking a simpler model Nikon D3100, which can do the same thing as the D5100, but its price is much less. D5100 is more suitable for those who like to shoot in poor lighting conditions at high ISO. Saturation and image quality on the D5100 and D3100 very similar to low and medium ISO. Of course newer Nikon D5200 in many ways beats the Nikon D5100.

I do not recommend buying an older Nikon D5000, it does not have autofocus when shooting video, and it is quite difficult for an ordinary user to focus on sharpness manually.

By the way here a list of all CZKs from Nikonmaybe he will help in choosing.

Conclusions

Nikon D5100 gives a very good picture one click on the shutter button. Camera for photo lovers who just need a good result in a photo without unnecessary troubles. Full HD and a swivel display makes the camera even more attractive. Given that the camera has a matrix of very high quality Nikon D7000then Nikon D5100 can be used by advanced amateurs as well.

Please tell me how to set up iso. No matter how I set its different values, there is no difference, and “iso a” flashes on the display. I shoot in aperture priority. Thanks!

  • anonym

Menu – Shooting menu – ISO sensitivity setting – Auto. management feels. iso on / off.

    • Paul

      Thank you!

  • Eugene

Who will tell you the solution to the problem. The built-in flash pops up when it should. But probably the spring has weakened and the flash does not rise a little. If you push it a millimeter, the micrik (or some other sensor) works as expected and the flash works normally.

    • BB

If you often use the built-in flash, the service center will help you.

      • Eugene

Yes, I almost never use it at all. This is the case in case of a sale so that the price is not dropped. Suddenly, there for a short time to fix everything with his own hands.

        • Onotole

On the D5100, this is a common problem: on the axle of the lifting flash there are 2 twisted torsion springs from the right and left edges of the axle. The plastic element, against which one of the mustache of one of the springs rests, breaks (h.z. from which it may even be so easy) and this plastic the size of a match head spills out. Consequently, one of the springs actually does not work, and the remaining one does not have enough strength to hold the flash in the highest position. And there, as you rightly noted, there is a microswitch, which makes the camera understand that the flash is activated, otherwise it considers that it is down. So you have to help her with your hands. I will not say exactly how to solve the problem, but I definitely cannot do without disassembling the case.

          • Eugene

All clear. If the axle is a part of the plastic case and has broken off, it is probably difficult to restore it. Some kind of metal pin to screw in. Again, the plastic of the case can crumble. Or somehow reinforce it with some kind of two-component glue. I live in the provinces, there are no services nearby, and it’s probably expensive for it. So I'll use it for now :), or maybe my hands will reach it sometime. Thanks.

            • Onotole

Actually, you described everything correctly how to restore everything, here and the fusion of a brace and sculptural work with epoxy - everything will do, you can also try the popular life hack with superglue and soda. But it seems to me the most difficult process of disassembly-assembly with the condition not to pour dust inside and not to damage the screw slots, so that it does not look like an artisanal repair later and does not reduce the sale price more than the malfunction itself.

    • Lev

Just grease! An axis with a spring and, just in case, a latch. Do not overfill!

  • Gray-haired

    Blitz question.
Introductory: budget up to 10k, hands from below the shoulders (professional mild tremor of the hands, no, not an alcoholic xD), experience with soap dishes and ulmages, without fanaticism and at the level of “poked syudy - oh, norms”. For shooting in cloudy lighting (the visitor is not very frequent in the Sun, heh), indoors, preferably without puffing (and they can give it in the face, the role players are nervous people without a hangover), without a tripod (sometimes for waltzing you need to move around a lot or on the table to run / run away), non-commercial photography and non-professional.
    Options in the secondary market:
    1) Nikon d3100, lens 18-105 - 6k wooden
    2) Nikon D3100 Kit 18-55 VR - 3k wooden
    3) Nikon D5100 Nikkor 18-55mm - 11 money
    4) Nikon D5200 Kit 18-55mm - 15 money
    5) Nikon D5200 carcass - 8k
The lenses in our Mukhosransk range from 6k (whale 18-55, and whale 18-105 6300+), fifty-fifty lenses and thirty Nikon AF-S lenses we have 7-9k and beyond.
And so on average 15k per ward per lens.

I'm not going to go to the professional level, the maximum is to upload a photo to the instu under Twenty20.

Thanks in advance to all trynding in the comments, I really need your srach in order to decide on the choice%)

    • BB

10k why? Here, although the conversation is in Russian, the site is originally from Ukraine)
If your prices are in Russian rubles, then something is very cheap D3100 ...
In general, in your case, the more expensive the better. In modern realities and your tasks, the carcass is at least D5100, better than D5200. The first seems to have a more stable focus, the second has a better matrix (≈ + 1/3 stops of the working ISO), more focus points. It will be bad with waltzers (or you need to improve the skill of the photographer very well, both as a user of the device and in terms of the experience of such shooting). The D7100 is even better with its AF module, but won't fit into your budget.
For a not-so-good light, the glass, of course, is better than the lighter, something like 17-50 / 2.8 Sigma / Tamron.
From 18-55 of the first or second version and 18-105, the latter is a little better and more universal. 18-55 of the third version a little bit sharper (according to reviews and reviews)

      • Gray-haired

        Ugum, unsinkable rubles.
D3100 we often have girls-photographers selling for 3-4k, this is the norm. Less often for 5-6k.
A bunch of all kinds of Zeniths for a penny (1000-3000 rubles) with good manual lenses =) But I don’t climb there, I don’t really like these twirls, I’ve wound up on rangefinder sights.
Here, too, I am inclined to 5100, just the scatter in the price tags is notable here, we need to catch the fish then, heh.
7100 our carcass costs from 23k rubles (at least, sometimes), usually from 40k, so this is not an option for yours, for non-profit))
Sigma lens 17-50 / 2.8 25 pieces minimum, this is fun, I know.

However, thank you, I will keep the course to 5100 (why the hell do I need overdrive of megapixels at 5200 I xs) :)

        • anonym

Generally, indoors, good puff will be more important than high-aperture glass. Moreover, it will be possible to “freeze” waltzers.

          • Gray-haired

And, I forgot to mention - the main dance floor in the park, on the cobblestones. And the flash will disturb them in the first place. I understand that it's hard to run in a tailcoat and dress, but I can't run with a camera either!)
I do not argue that it’s better with puff, but it doesn’t always work out, and here the lens and the carcass come to the fore. And, as I read here, 5100 is good in difficult dark conditions.

            • Vitaly N

It was written at that time, the newer the device, the better. Take a look sb-400, not very powerful but not large and allows you to direct to the ceiling. The built-in may also be enough to illuminate, but with large lenses there may be a shadow from them below.

              • Michael

There is no ceiling in the square)

              • Vitaly N

But it will not give a shadow from below on the cobblestones)

            • Michael

The more expensive the better. The lighter the better. This is one of the most difficult scenes for the technique. A tripod is not an assistant. Although, if it is just cloudy and not in the thick of trees, then there should be enough dark

    • Lev

Of course the D5200! 14 bits and high Ayso coupled with the Toshiba matrix! RO (RAW) to help you!

      • Anna

5100 also has 14 bits if someone does not read carefully ...

  • Masha

Good day. I have this camera, there is no lens. And as a gift I can choose any lens. I want to do photography. I read you and decided to stay on the DX AF-S NIkkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED IF SWM. Please comment on this duet)))

    • Michael

Yes, there are no comments. Simple camera, great lens

      • Vitaly N

But I’m afraid it will not be comfortable to wear :) Even with 18-105 he already has a rib when he hangs on his neck. And here the lens is one and a half times heavier than the camera.

        • Michael

You put the strap on the wrong side) it is necessary on the contrary - with the lens to the belly and nothing hits)

          • Vitaly N

            Butlock solves the problem :)

      • Masha

Tell me what to do. Take this lens and eventually change the camera for the best, or buy an easier lens for this camera now? Just as the lens will be a gift and I chose the best, I do not understand how appropriate this is with a simple camera. Thanks.

        • Vitaly N

Take a lens. They are generally more durable and permanent than cameras. And someone from the greats said that on the crop one way to perfection is 17-55 :) Although Sigma 17-50 gives the best quality and is a stabilizer, the native focuses more stable and more accurately. And you can change the camera later. Now the convenience of shooting depends more on the camera, the lens decides more.
And there was more of a joke about convenience, then decide for yourself how it will be more convenient for you - to hold it with your hand or to buy a Chinese pen. This creates more inconvenience when you walk around with him all day.

          • Masha

            Thank you

        • Michael

Take the lens if possible. Much less depends on the camera, and a good lens is always appropriate.

          • Masha

            Thank you

  • Konstantin

Good day! I bought a D5100 when opening a RAW file through Photoshop, a window pops up, see the screen, this does not happen on the old D5000. Please tell me where and what to look for and what to fix.

    • Maria

Raw camera did not try to demolish-rearrange?

      • Konstantin

        This is where to demolish?

    • Michael

On the installed version of Camera Raw, well, consult the adobe website for a list of cameras supported by this version

    • Arkady Shapoval

You need to update Photoshop or ACR (Camera RAW), 5100 is newer than 5000

      • Konstantin

You can learn more about where and what, I am poorly versed in this. Thank you in advance.

        • Maria

          Roman answered you correctly.
Maybe you remember how to get the old CS5?
Adobe is an extremely bourgeois program, where the entire application package is updated almost every year, and new equipment is already being released taking into account these updates. By analogy, old memory cards slow down the work of new cameras. Because any camera has a firmware, and new ones have it new, based on the current photo processing products on the market.

You will find many installation methods on the Internet, it is better to hiccup the 2019 version right away, so that it is enough for a longer time.

          • Anonimus

The cause-effect is violated)) not the technology is released taking into account the updates)) but the updates are released with the support of the new technology.

        • Michael

Details: 5100 is supported with Camera RAW 6.4
          https://helpx.adobe.com/ru/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
If you have an earlier version installed, then you need to find a fresher and install. CS5 supports up to 6.7.1, so you can not reinstall Photoshop itself.

    • Roman

You have an old version of Photoshop installed - CS5. VERY OLD. Incredibly simple. Ask someone you know to put the Photoshop fresher, he will open the frames from your new camera.

  • Konstantin

Thanks everyone! I solved the problem by installing a new photoshop in 2019. I did not notice that I had 2010, it worked for 5000 and everything is fine. I have to be careful. Thanks again to everyone!

    • US6IBD

You got off with a little blood. When switching from D80 to D610, I had to not only switch from Photoshop CS5 to CS6 (minimum-CameraRaw8.3), but also change the entire computer - I did not pull.

  • Maria

I want to learn how to take pictures of myself, Nikon 5100 is what I want to set up the camera. Thank you for your help!

    • Taras

The food is even more extensive. To myself - in the mirror? from a tripod? Selfies with the on-screen display? specify your bazhannya))

  • Dmitriy

Help with the choice, I can’t decide, the more I learn the information, the more difficult) Used cameras:
    Canon 100d (Canon EF-IS 18-55 mm IS STM) 180 $
    Canon 600d (EF-IS 55-200 mm) 210 $
    Canon 600d (18-55mm) $ 180

    Nikon D3200 (18-55 mm) 130 $
    Nikon D5100 (18-55 mm) 160 $

    • Michael

they are all the same plus or minus. The EF 55-250 is a telephoto lens, a good thing, but usually you need something like the 18-55. Arkady has a rating of cameras in the "articles" - and be guided by him

  • koba

a few years ago I bought a D5100 for one library in order to re-shoot books, then in my hands this device took more than 500000 frames, and today they wrote to me that the counter had already exceeded 720000 ... I can't say that all copies will work like that, but at least the shutters in those nikons they were apparently excellent ... They wrote about this to me because it turns out that that camera still had some kind of problem - sometimes when turned on, it stops shooting, when you release it, the shutter seems to jam, but only sometimes, and so , after turning off and on, it continues to work normally.

    • BB

Cool. On my 126k so far, it works properly, but it is already in the status of a spare camera, so it is used infrequently.

  • Konstantin

Good afternoon! Please tell me how to turn on the grid in the viewfinder in this camera? In 5000, I turn on the Shooting / Display menu, I can not find it here.

    • Nicholas

I subscribe to the question. But I have a suspicion that the D5100 simply does not have such a function ...

  • Sergei

Good afternoon. Help with choosing a versatile travel lens with the Nikon D 5100

    • Alexander

18-105 - as for me, this is the best lens in terms of price / quality ratio. Only when buying, it is imperative to check the sharpness across the frame so that there is no soap on one of the sides.

  • Michael

    18-105

  • BB

    Or 18-140

  • Konstantin

I took 18-140 and fix 35. 18-140 closes me all the main tasks, 35 I use in low light or for portraits.

  • Olga

Hello! Tell me, at 5100 Which is better to take a portrait? Nikkor 50 mm, or 35 mm? And does it make sense to consider analogues of other manufacturers? Yongnuo for example, and the like?

    • BB

50 and 35 mm are not quite portrait FRs. I have a fifty dollar, but on the crop it is rarely used. Native lenses will work best.
      https://radojuva.com/2014/01/35-vs-50/

    • Alexander

35 on the crop will be a staffer, i.e. for everything in a row. But 50 can be used as a portrait. I won’t say anything about YN, because I use 50 / 1.4d (it will not work for you), but the owners seem to speak well of them.

  • Eugene

Greetings! Thanks to the author of the site for such a knowledge base for the curious, as well as those who, having experience, share it!
A brief background: somewhere in 2012-13, my wife began to choose a camera for work, photographs puppies on the machine, it is difficult for her to understand in manual modes. After reading this article, they bought a whale kit with an 18-55 lens. My wife was delighted with the quality of the photos. But recently, 9 out of ten frames have been illuminated. He fixed it in the repair, the master cleaned the carcass and repaired the lens, quality shots were added, but the problem of light is still present. Is this already old age or is it a common age-related malfunction? I do not think that there can be many reasons for this, so I am interested.
I’m thinking of buying 35mm for now, since 80% of the frames are in this position of a staffer, but I suspect that I will have to update the carcass.

    • BB

My D5100 has more than 100k mileage, my D7100 has more than 125k mileage. The devices have no problems with overexposure (of the 'problems' - only dust on the matrix, which is solved by cleaning the sensor). However, I never use the 'auto' mode.
Make a full reset of the camera settings, try with other optics (rent or from friends), try to shoot in A / S / M mode to understand what the problem is. Maybe they included exposure bracketing, or they accidentally set up exposure compensation.

    • Konstantin

      I bought my wife a Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II 10000UAH.

  • Eugene

Running on before I ask: it may not be necessary to buy a SLR camera to get a photo, as my wife says “like a postcard”. I watch compacts from Sony with Zeiss optics, according to the descriptions, they are not bad. Can you advise up to UAH 20000?! Light used is acceptable. Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Show examples of what you want to receive. Even a telephone can handle many.

      • Eugene

I could not find disks with early photographs. All available six-month-old photographs are maximum, but they are not the same as those in the youth of the photoappart. Run by the way 119500.
Of course, I’m interested to deal with the manual and manual settings, but I did good shots, in my opinion, but they are not suitable for the consumer, according to my wife. It is on the car that it turns out what you need. Also in jreg :-). I come to the conclusion that the best option would be to buy 5500-5600 and think about the lens.

        • Arkady Shapoval

There are darkness on the Internet to understand what you need

          • Eugene

            such

            • Eugene

              or is it

              • Eugene

                here's another

              • Eugene

but it turns out the vast majority of such frames. The distance to the puppy does not matter.

              • Eugene

                or such

              • Denis

it’s good that EXIF stayed, did not rub during unloading
in your place where everything is lit up, ISO 3200, that is, if it were a problem with the shutter, obviously the ISO would be lower, as in other photos, where everything is fine
What kind of flash is used? Is it really Chinese?

              • B. R. P.

Try stopping shooting in auto mode with flash.

              • Michael

It seems I understood what was happening. Set the manual mode in it, set the ISO to 200 and turn on AutoISO. Then go back to the machine

  • Eugene

Arkady, unfortunately those photos that were obtained on the hard drive in the box, if I succeed, I’ll try to find tomorrow, maybe somewhere on the CD. I know that you can get good photos from your phone nowadays, but the usability is not always and soothes the possibility of an upgrade.

  • Eugene

The flash is built-in. His wife takes pictures, she likes shots only from a machine gun, and if without a flash, they go dark.

    • Oleg

So the puppies may still have stress due to a bright flash directly into the eyes at close range. It is better to master the “aperture priority” shooting mode, adjust ISO manually as needed, and select the time and place of shooting, for example, in the daytime near a window there is quite good lighting even in cloudy weather. If at another time and not near the window, the flash can be replaced with constant light sources (lamp, etc.), which are not placed in front, but slightly to the side. If you need a built-in flash, you can hold a white cardboard in front of it, and the light will turn out softer, and the animal will not be so disturbed.

      • Eugene

Subjected to stress, fall into it without a flash. Most calmly endure a small photo shoot. For the rest, everything happens just like that, with the exception of using semi-automatic modes. Personally, I would go more into manual mode, but the main user is the wife, and she is suitable at the finish line, only automatic frame preparation.
We must try to muffle the flash with transparent tape)))

        • Oleg

You probably don’t need to glue the flash itself so that it does not overheat more than usual. Well, this does not solve the problem of overexposure, why the camera automatically selects such parameters.

        • B. R. P.

I strongly advise you to try shooting in priority aperture with flash and not turn on auto-iso. Your wife will not have to regulate something, it will be very similar to the same auto mode for manipulations.

  • Eugene

I found such a raid on the lens glasses. Could it be the reason that the frame using the flash turns out to be overexposed (overexposed, so to speak) It seems logical that when you look through the glass everything is in order, but when the flash fires, it illuminates all this invisible raid? Or I'm wrong?

    • Michael

      ISO 3200 remove for starters)

Eugene, what kind of lens model?

      • Eugene

        18-55 whale

  • Arina

Good afternoon! Going to buy the first SLR. Already decided that it will be a Nikon D5100 or Canon EOS 650D. The question is: with which lens to buy one or the other if we photograph everything. camera for home use. For photos of people, nature, the city and animals. But still I want good photos, and not like on the phone. Help find a middle ground. Moreover, her daughter was going to take a photograph.

    • Basil

Choose the one that fits your hand better. In terms of lenses, the most budget kit is the whale 18-55 and aperture 50mm. It is with such a kit that they are often sold on the secondary with a sane price tag

      • Arina

In addition, in the names of the lenses there are so many different letters — he’ll break a leg. Of course, I read it and began to understand some (I realized that stabilization is good and I want a lens with it), but for an amateur it is very difficult. My nature is creative, so I’m sure that the device will not lie idle. I would like to enjoy the pictures of different directions, but with one lens. Really looking forward to your answers and hope for help)

    • BB

The main parameters of the lens are “encrypted” in numbers: https://radojuva.com/o-fotografii/#nikon
The simplest and cheapest one is the 18-55 whale, a little more expensive - 18-105, or 18-140 - these will be more versatile (than 18-55), but with special "artistry" and strong background blur from the "whales" do not wait.
Tamron or Sigma 17-50 / 2,8 will give higher quality (clarity, detail), and with this lens you can already blur the background quite well.
Do not take the “fifty kopeck piece” (although many advise) - on the “crop” it is not convenient, only if it is included and inexpensive.
If you want to “beautifully, inexpensively, and experiment” - buy Helios-81H - with it you can get a beautiful picture and good blur, but at the same time you will have to master a completely manual shooting mode (for a beginner, this will not be superfluous).

      • Arina

        Thank you)

  • Arina

Thank you for the answer. You can’t try on self-isolation, you’ll fall into your arm. Yes, and my hands are different for me, my daughter and my husband. I want specifics about lenses that are most often sold complete with the specified Nikon and Kenon, or which will not be difficult to find if you buy separately. By the way, how is it more profitable separately or as a kit? Please write the best option for a universal lens for kenon and nikon. So to speak, the golden mean is price-quality. There is no purpose to buy the cheapest.

    • BB

Usually a set is cheaper. The main thing is to check the camera and optics when / before buying: https://radojuva.com/2013/10/where-are-you-bug/
Ideally, take with you a person who is well versed in photography.
The D5100 is a small DSLR designed for small to medium-sized hands. In any case, "grip" is a matter of habit.

    • B. R. P.

As advised above, https://radojuva.com/2013/12/sigma-17-50mm-2-8-ex-dc-os-hsm/. There are both under Nikon and under Canon. There is a stub. Zooms with greater magnification are more convenient for different scenes, but the picture quality is noticeably worse. If you develop your creative potential, one lens will still not be enough.

    • Pokemon

Arina, take a look at one of these three lenses:
      Sigma AF 17-50mm f / 2.8, Tokina AT-X PRO SD 16-50 F2.8 DX, Tamron AF 17-50 / 2.8.
Reviews of all these lenses are on this site.
These are not whale lenses and they are optically better than any whale lenses under crop.
Autofocus on all three of the above lenses needs to be checked BEFORE buying.
If as you write there is no purpose to buy the cheapest and you can afford the original one from Nikon or Canon, then take a look at these: Nikon 17-55mm f / 2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom or Canon EF-S 17-55mm f / 2.8 IS USM.
