Review of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical with hood HB-47

Nikon 50 / 1.8G - it's fast fifty-degree autofocus lens from Nikon. 'Poltina' or 'fifty-kopeck' is the common name for a lens with a focal length of 50 mm. This focal length is very popular. On old cameras, XNUMX rubles were often installed as a standard lens, but nowadays, XNUMX rubles are attractive for a low price and excellent image quality.

The Nikon 50 / 1.8G lens is an upgrade to the legendary Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor from film cameras. The upgrade touched on the aperture control method, the optical circuit and the built-in focus motor. The new model is heavier and larger in size.

All Nikon 50 / 1.8 Autofocus Lenses

  1. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8 AF Nikkor (first version, MKI) - the lens was produced only in Japan from 1986 to 1990. It is easy to distinguish by a window with a focusing distance and a narrow plastic focus ring. There are two subversions that are no different:
    • MKI first subversion. Weighing 210 grams. It is easy to distinguish by the screw under the inscription '1: 1.8'. From September 1986 to March 1987. Serial numbers start at 2
    • MKI second version. Weighing 165 grams. It is easy to distinguish by the absence of a screw under the inscription '1: 1.8'. From 1987 to 1990. Serial numbers start at 3.
  2. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8 AF Nikkor (second version, MKII, also known as the 'N', or the 'NEW' version) - the lens was produced in Japan and China. The MK II version was produced from 1990 to 2001. There are three subversions that are no different:
  3. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (third version, MKIIIbetter known as 'D'-version) - the lens is available from 2002 to this day. All lenses are made in China.
  4. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical (fourth version, MKIVbetter known as '1.8 G'-version or '1.8 AF-S' version) - the lens has been produced since 2011, all lenses are made in China.

Nikon since available Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor, has not updated its set of fifty dollars for a long time. Before the Nikon 50 / 1.8G was released, there was only a choice between expensive f / 1.4 models and between the old non-motorized Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor... With the release of the new, relatively cheap Nikon 50 / 1.8G, users non-powered cameras got the opportunity to use aperture poltina without special investment.

Most importantly, what you need to know about the Nikon 50 / 1.8G:

1. The lens is also suitable for FX and DX cameras. That is, the lens can be used at full frame, for example, on full-frame FX cameras Nikon D600, D3s, D800, D750 etc., and on cropped cameras, for example, on Nikon D3300, D90, D5200 etc.

2. The lens has focus motor Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which means the lens can be used for everyone Nikon digital SLR cameras. The lens will automatically focus even on entry-level non-powered cameras: D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500.

3. The lens is marked “G”. This means the Nikon 50 / 1.8G has no aperture ring. The diaphragm is controlled only by the camera. This will prevent the lens from being used on older film cameras, or for example for macro with reversible adapter... This is not a disadvantage, but a tribute to the times. Almost all lenses now come without an aperture ring. You can read more about 'G' and 'Non-G' lenses here.

4. The diameter of the front filter is 58 mm, the same as that of Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor. The lens is made of plastic, the assembly is good. Bayonet mount metal. All Nikon 50 / 1.8G lenses are manufactured in China.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical fixed lens and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical universal lens

5. Focusing method. When focusing, the entire lens block moves. It is very important that the lens does not have internal focus. But at the same time, the method itself is made quite unusual, when focusing, the inner part of the lens moves, which is located in the middle of the pyramidal front frame. And that means that the trunk of the lens does not extend or rotate when focusing.

A fifty-fifty Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and a real Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2 D Defocus Image Control lens

A fifty-fifty Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and a true portrait lens Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2D

6. High speed focus. But always remember that the speed and accuracy of focusing is also associated with the camera itself and a number of other factors. The lens has focus distance scale. The distance is indicated in meters and feet. There is also a depth of field scale for F / 16.

7. On the lens housing can be found focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

8. The minimum focusing distance is 45 cm. The maximum ratio when magnified is 1: 6.7. You can’t shoot a macro with this lens, but at the same time it’s easy to shoot small objects.

9. When used on cropped cameras with Nikon DX, the viewing angle will be narrower than at full frame. It will appear that the viewing angle will be equivalent to the lens 75 mm full frame... This allows using the lens on cameras with a cropped matrix without any problems as a good portrait lens. But, please note that in fact Nikon 50 / 1.8G is just a universal fast prime lens, and it is not designed for a portrait. Anyway, the classic focal length for portraits starts at 80 mm.

10. Aperture. Yes, f / 1.8 is great aperture for shooting in low light. The lens can really be used in low light conditions. Well, if you want an even brighter lens, then you need to look at its brothers - Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor and Nikon 50mm f / 1.4D AF Nikkor.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical without hood

This is what the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical looks like after prolonged use

About the picture (photo quality)

The image is sharp already with F / 1.8. Maximum sharpness is achieved in the area of the aperture F / 5.6. The contrast is very good. The lens tolerates back and side light, sometimes it can catch hares. The bokeh of the lens is smooth and smooth, not as rough as that of Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor. When the aperture is closed, the lens makes of luminous objects 14 beam stars. On the open diaphragm, pronounced freezing. Chromatic aberrations quite strong up to F2.8, but this is typical of this kind of lenses. By the way, Nikon 50 / 1.8G for 2013 is Nikon's only fifty dollars using special aspherical element. In general, image quality is on top.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical is a good fast prime. Suitable as a budget portrait lens on DX cameras, it has good sharpness and color reproduction. I believe Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical the most optimal fifty dollars in the price \ quality section.

UPDATE: in 2016, a Chinese copy of this lens appeared at a cost 2-3 times lower than the original. See YONGNUO 50mm 1: 1.8 review (YN50mm F1.8N).

  • Andrei

    Thanks. We will take 35-ku.

  • Novel

Please tell me what can you say about the Nikkor 50 mm Series E 1.8 Ais?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Good fit lens, compact. Most likely it was produced not by Nikon himself, but at third-party factories.

  • Sergei

Hello Arkady! I have a Nikon d7000 camera with a whale of 18-105, I select a lens for shooting indoors in low light. Tell me please, is 1.8g suitable for this purpose, as well as partially using outdoors for portraits when blurring the background or is it better to take 1.4g or is it not worth overpaying and take 1.8d or 1.4d?

    • Arkady Shapoval

50mm for the room is too much. For the D7000, you can look towards 1.4D.

  • Nick

On D5000 I want to take 50 AF. Do I get tired of catching focus ?? there is an analogue of Helios MC 81H ... The copy is soapy ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

if you shoot for yourself, then don't be tortured. And if you shoot dynamic scenes, shoot portraits, etc. to order - it will be difficult. Exposure metering with Helios-5000N will not work on D81, therefore, Helios-81N is even more complicated, although cheaper. I recommend collecting money for 50 1.8G

  • Nick

I just turned up for 3t.r in total .. I think I’d like to experiment, MB will be sharper, and the helios will be very soapy, but its bokeh is very beautiful =)

  • Sergei

Hello Arkady! I'm going to take the D90 body, I have absolutely no control over the photography technique. They say that even in this case, a whale lens is not the best choice. It seems that Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S for the first time will be enough. Do not confirm my decision?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it will be just right, this is a good lens and you can “squeeze out” a lot of good photos from it. I confirm your choice.

  • Sergei

Thank you very much, you have a very good site!

  • Alena Ha

    Arkady, good day!
I want to thank you for the amazingly informative site (as I hadn’t seen before).
My question is: in my Nikon D5000 for shooting portraits of children (at school and at home) and animals I plan to purchase a Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S, but recently I was advised as a portrait to take Tamron AF 28-75mm F / 2.8 XR Di LD. Now I'm in thought, what is better?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I answer late, because I was on vacation.
The lenses are completely different, if you are engaged in photography only for yourself, then Tamron will be more convenient. But the image quality and aperture are much higher in the native Nikon fifty fifty 50 1.8G

      • Alena Ha

Thank you for your reply. So my intuition did not fail me, I bought my own lens, without waiting for your answer. Very satisfied)))

  • Igor

    Tell me, please! What is better to take for a staffer: Nikon 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S or Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S? D5100 camera with 18-105mm whale.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, your regular will be 18-105mm. But if you take a regular fix on the crop, then this is definitely 35mm.

  • Vladimir

    Hi!
And where can I buy such a lens!
    Better Used

    • Arkady Shapoval

can be in any decent online store, or, used on any online flea market.

  • Jury

Thank you very much!!!! for TIPS, GOOD LUCK.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

very sharp and high-quality (in terms of picture) lens. the bokeh is certainly boring when compared with the same Helios-44m, but there is autofocus. good portraiture for crop. the price hits 300%.

  • Eugene

Thank you, you can chew! Now I will definitely make my choice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It's my pleasure. Happy for you.

  • Basil

Thank you very much for your work !!!
Please tell me whether you should be afraid of the lack of a stabilizer ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, not worth it. At fifty dollars, the stabilizer has not yet been set.

  • Basil

maybe you need to make an advertisement, our “thank you” does not warm your pocket?)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I will be happy to like VKontakte, Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus.

  • Daria

Arkady, I want to join in thanks for your work, I found a lot of useful and interesting things on your site, and I’m going to re-read a lot of things! Just a bonanza.
I would like to take this opportunity)) I will ask a question that is already boring ... 3100 camera. I want a fix, I had the opportunity to shoot with Nikon 1mm f / 50G AF-S for 1.4 day, the difference in the picture compared to the 18-55 whale is noticeable, the lens even on similar ones with the whale apertures, the image gives out brighter, the background washes beautifully, but the autofocus, although very smart and very, very quiet, seemed not so tenacious on a whale. And the soft effect on the open is a bit annoying, maybe I'm just not used to it, but I really like sharp photos.
The question actually is whether to save money for it, or still take the more budget 1,8G AF-S. Focal for me is comfortable, even indoors, I definitely don’t want a 35-ku.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, I recommend this particular lens. He has autofocus faster than 1.4G, the bokeh is pleasant. For a long time I used 50 1.8, it will be enough with my head. The soft effect can be observed due to a very, very small depth of field and focus errors.

      • Daria

Arkady, thanks! I noticed errors in focusing at 1,4, and they are not always visible on the camera’s display, but everything is clear on the computer’s monitor.

  • Sergei

    Great, support!
    Hello!
It's time to order glass. I asked you a question above, but getting a competent answer, I got confused even more, if possible, by asking the D7000 again, looking for a good portrait, my choice is 50 / 1.8G, 50 / 1,4G and 85 / 1.8G More inclined to the latter, t. to. * honest portraiture on crop and there are 2 Rodenstok filters (and 18-105 and 85-m 67mm)
Put an end to my torment of choice, please put everything in its place! I order in the States, there are 2 days left for reflection! (
Thanks in advance! Thank you for your patience!)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Portrait should be a portrait, because 85mm without hesitation. Yes, shooting a little harder than a fifty dollars on a crop, but the result is different at times.

  • Sergei

Thank you very much! At first I thought of taking 50 / 1,8G, then I read it and compared it with 85 / 1.8G, but even later I thought about 50 / 1,4 with its aperture ratio ... Hence the torment! (
This is secondary, but still, how will the 85 deal with landscapes and architecture? I understand that for each case there is a lens, thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

No, he will cope poorly with landscapes and architecture, as he has a narrow viewing angle, and a wider one is needed for the landscape. More details in the landscape section.

  • Sergei

    Thank you very much!

  • Victor

Hello! I want to take a new universal fix for nikon d3100. I take portraits both on the street and indoors, sometimes landscapes. Is it still better to take the Nikkor DX 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S or the Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8G AF-S?

    • Arkady Shapoval

For portraits, a fifty dollars is definitely better.

  • Victor

And for all occasions 35? Is it more versatile?

    • Arkady Shapoval

More versatile, yes. The distortion is stronger, for a portrait it is “shorter”. Wins in one, loses in another. Fifty will always be fifty. Personally, I have two: 35 and 50, both 1.8. 35 is increasingly staying at home.

      • Victor

If you were faced with a choice, what would you take: 50 or 35?

        • Arkady Shapoval

I have long been faced with a choice, though 35 2.8, and 50 1.8, I took 50mm, and my choice was very good, since I often had to take a portrait, and on a 35mm crop it is extremely inconvenient, since the front portrait needs to be shot back to back photographed. Yes, and at 35 1.8 distortion, incompatibility with FX cameras, focusing slower, etc. As the only standard fixed lens, a 35mm lens can serve on the crop, but no more.

          • Victor

Thanks a lot . You helped me a lot .

  • Sergei

Hello! I wanted to ask you which filter is best suited for this fix. There are 2 options: http://y.ua/Rodenstock-Digital-PRO-MC-UV-58-mm.html http://y.ua/Hoya-HMC-UV-58mm.html
I don’t know what to choose.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The filters fit the same, because they have the same diameter of the landing thread in 58mm.

      • Andrei

        Which one would you take?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Hoya, because it is cheaper, and they will both give reflections.

  • Julia

Good afternoon. Perhaps my question will seem stupid, but without ever taking pictures with any other portrait lens other than "fifty", I am interested in this: I was faced with the fact that when shooting in a small room, the viewing angle is too small and not everything that I would like to photograph fits into the frame, Please tell me, if you shoot with 35, will the review be bigger? and 85-ku even less than 50-ku? I understand correctly? I understand that in this situation it is better to use a wide-angle lens, but still, if you use a prime, then which will be more convenient: 35, 50 or 85?

  • Julia

Many thanks!!! Just once they tried to convince me of the opposite, and in connection with this I got a little confused !!! =))
Once again, many thanks for clarifying this issue for me !!!!

  • Vladimir

How do you think this lens will work for a beginner, or is a standard kit better for a start? The first time I buy a DSLR. The stock goes d3100 carcass, this lens, bag and memory card. If you take separately, I will overpay the hryvnia 600. So I bought a share. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

First you need a whale. Immediately taking a fix (without zoom) can scare off interest in photography. But this is a very strongly subjective opinion, perhaps this article will help you: https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/04/kind-of-lens/

      • Yuriy

Tell me please! I want to buy a Nikon D3100 KIT 50mm AF-S 1.8G, I need it for domestic needs and for filming outdoors, especially when traveling. Is it suitable for nature? What is his zoom?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Will do. Only KiT means that he also has a whale lens, and 50mm will serve as a portrait, and for other similar needs.
