Review of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

The full name of the lens written on its body is Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical, but it is commonly called Nikon 50 / 1.8G.

Review of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical with hood HB-47

Nikon 50 / 1.8G - it's fast fifty-degree autofocus lens from Nikon. 'Poltina' or 'fifty-kopeck' is the common name for a lens with a focal length of 50 mm. This focal length is very popular. On old cameras, XNUMX rubles were often installed as a standard lens, but nowadays, XNUMX rubles are attractive for a low price and excellent image quality.

The Nikon 50 / 1.8G lens is an upgrade to the legendary Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor from film cameras. The upgrade touched on the aperture control method, the optical circuit and the built-in focus motor. The new model is heavier and larger in size.

All Nikon 50 / 1.8 Autofocus Lenses

  1. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8 AF Nikkor (first version, MKI) - the lens was produced only in Japan from 1986 to 1990. It is easy to distinguish by a window with a focusing distance and a narrow plastic focus ring. There are two subversions that are no different:
    • MKI first subversion. Weighing 210 grams. It is easy to distinguish by the screw under the inscription '1: 1.8'. From September 1986 to March 1987. Serial numbers start at 2
    • MKI second version. Weighing 165 grams. It is easy to distinguish by the absence of a screw under the inscription '1: 1.8'. From 1987 to 1990. Serial numbers start at 3.
  2. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8 AF Nikkor (second version, MKII, also known as the 'N', or the 'NEW' version) - the lens was produced in Japan and China. The MK II version was produced from 1990 to 2001. There are three subversions that are no different:
  3. Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (third version, MKIIIbetter known as 'D'-version) - the lens is available from 2002 to this day. All lenses are made in China.
  4. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical (fourth version, MKIVbetter known as '1.8 G'-version or '1.8 AF-S' version) - the lens has been produced since 2011, all lenses are made in China.
  5. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical Special Edition (fifth version, MKVbetter known as version 'Special Edition' or 'SE' or version for the camera with a retro design of the case Nikon Df) - the lens has been available since the fall of 2013. All lenses are made in China.
  6. Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.8 S, from summer 2018, lens for mirrorless cameras with Nikon Z mount... Diagram of 12 elements in 9 groups, 2 ED, 2 ASP.

Nikon since available Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor, has not updated its set of fifty dollars for a long time. Before the Nikon 50 / 1.8G was released, there was only a choice between expensive f / 1.4 models and between the old non-motorized Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor... With the release of the new, relatively cheap Nikon 50 / 1.8G, users non-powered cameras got the opportunity to use aperture poltina without special investment.

Most importantly, what you need to know about the Nikon 50 / 1.8G:

1. The lens is also suitable for FX and DX cameras. That is, the lens can be used at full frame, for example, on full-frame FX cameras Nikon D600, D3s, D800, D750 etc., and on cropped cameras, for example, on Nikon D3300, D90, D5200 etc.

2. The lens has focus motor Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which means the lens can be used for everyone Nikon digital SLR cameras. The lens will automatically focus even on entry-level non-powered cameras: D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500.

3. The lens is marked “G”. This means the Nikon 50 / 1.8G has no aperture ring. The diaphragm is controlled only by the camera. This will prevent the lens from being used on older film cameras, or for example for macro with reversible adapter... This is not a disadvantage, but a tribute to the times. Almost all lenses now come without an aperture ring. You can read more about 'G' and 'Non-G' lenses here.

4. The diameter of the front filter is 58 mm, the same as that of Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor. The lens is made of plastic, the assembly is good. Bayonet mount metal. All Nikon 50 / 1.8G lenses are manufactured in China.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical fixed lens and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM VR IF Aspherical universal lens

5. Focusing method. When focusing, the entire lens block moves. It is very important that the lens does not have internal focus. But at the same time, the method itself is made quite unusual, when focusing, the inner part of the lens moves, which is located in the middle of the pyramidal front frame. And that means that the trunk of the lens does not extend or rotate when focusing.

A fifty-fifty Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and a real Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2 D Defocus Image Control lens

A fifty-fifty Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and a true portrait lens Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2D

6. High speed focus. But always remember that the speed and accuracy of focusing is also associated with the camera itself and a number of other factors. The lens has focus distance scale. The distance is indicated in meters and feet. There is also a depth of field scale for F / 16.

7. On the lens housing can be found focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

8. The minimum focusing distance is 45 cm. The maximum ratio when magnified is 1: 6.7. You can’t shoot a macro with this lens, but at the same time it’s easy to shoot small objects.

9. When used on cropped cameras with Nikon DX, the viewing angle will be narrower than at full frame. It will appear that the viewing angle will be equivalent to the lens 75 mm full frame... This allows using the lens on cameras with a cropped matrix without any problems as a good portrait lens. But, please note that in fact Nikon 50 / 1.8G is just a universal fast prime lens, and it is not designed for a portrait. Anyway, the classic focal length for portraits starts at 80 mm.

10. Aperture. Yes, f / 1.8 is great aperture for shooting in low light. The lens can really be used in low light conditions. Well, if you want an even brighter lens, then you need to look at its brothers - Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor and Nikon 50mm f / 1.4D AF Nikkor.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical without hood

This is what the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical looks like after prolonged use

About the picture (photo quality)

The image is sharp already with F / 1.8. Maximum sharpness is achieved in the area of the aperture F / 5.6. The contrast is very good. The lens tolerates back and side light, sometimes it can catch hares. The bokeh of the lens is smooth and smooth, not as rough as that of Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor. When the aperture is closed, the lens makes of luminous objects 14 beam stars. On the open diaphragm, pronounced freezing. Chromatic aberrations quite strong up to F2.8, but this is typical of this kind of lenses. By the way, Nikon 50 / 1.8G for 2013 is Nikon's only fifty dollars using special aspherical element. In general, image quality is on top.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical is a good fast prime. Suitable as a budget portrait lens on DX cameras, it has good sharpness and color reproduction. I believe Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical the most optimal fifty dollars in the price \ quality section.

UPDATE: in 2016, a Chinese copy of this lens appeared at a cost 2-3 times lower than the original. See YONGNUO 50mm 1: 1.8 review (YN50mm F1.8N).

  • Demetrios Zaharopoulos

On my D800E it gives a gorgeous picture, sharp with f / 1.8, but the beauty of the bokeh is naturally inferior to 85-cams. Reporting and general plans are rented only to them.

    • NE

Nikon tried every fifty dollars. Lie on a shelf idle now. Try Sigma 50 1.4 ART and with your nikon 50 1.8 it will be the same

      • Vyacheslav

And why not that the price category is completely different? Yes, and the aperture ratio is greater and this is not reading the rest ...

        • NE

Well, let him try, maybe there is an opportunity to go to another category. The camera (d800e) is very decent to say the least. She also needs the appropriate optics ...

  • Dmitry

For some reason, the aperture 1.6 is displayed in the photo properties. What could be the reason?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the features of the program that views EXIF. The aperture is written in EXIF in several places, in one - as the ratio of the focal length to the input diameter, often the program can round this ratio not to 1.8, but to 1.7 or 1.6.

      • Dmitry

Thanks. Those. it does not speak of a lens malfunction? I'll try to look with the help of other software. This value was found in the detailed properties of the file in the standard windows 10 explorer

  • Boris

I bought myself 50 1.8G as an addition to 85 1.8G for a full frame. Probably, for its value it has good quality, but it lacks sharpness in the corners and the zone of sharp space is not flat. When aiming at infinity, the center in sharpness, and at the edges will be clear objects in 20 meters. It looks like a sprinkled 35 1.8G.
Conclusion: the picture quality is good at distances less than infinity, but does not reach 85 1.8G

    • Denis

the corners are not sharp even on the crop ...

    • Oleg

So the price is not the same at all, probably the cost takes into account this difference in quality. PS And why take 85 in addition to 50, maybe 28 2.8 is better?

      • Boris

I agree, 28 1.8G is great for this company! But at the full frame for the same money, there is an interesting zoom of the 18-35 G-series, so it’s not easy to choose .. By itself, a 28mm fix draws with the same viewing angle as a mobile phone’s camera, but we didn’t buy SLRs for this :) ) And the 50-nickname fills the middle between 85 and the width. And if you buy instead of 50 1.8G 1.4G, then the picture quality will be like 85? Maybe someone compared?

        • NE

better then 24 1.8…. 28 1.8 has a problem with focusing on the side points. And I just have 28 1.8, I'm going to, but I'm not going to sell or exchange for 24 1.8. More details here - http://www.club-nikon.ru/forum/topic/80751-nikon-24-f18-vs-nikon-28-f18/

        • Igor

Right now, mobile phones and the equivalent of 50mm can be removed. What is it now? Throw fifty dollars?)

  • Andrei

can't find it ... Does it have stabilization?

    • Valery A.

No one was able to find.

    • Valentine

      No

  • Eugene

Good day. Tell me please. There is now Helios 81N, it is sharp at the diaphragm, but not enough (on small details noticeable) on f4 sharpness ogogo). There is an idea to replace it with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D or f1.8G (with a motor which). If you do not take into account the convenience of Nikkorovsky (chip, af, etc.). Which one will be sharper on an open aperture? Nikon d5300 camera. Somewhere I heard that 50 1.8G is sharper with a fully open aperture than its fellow 1.8D.

    • Vitaly N

Why do you need the D version? Another manual lens? I do not know how about him, the G version is sharper than Helios 81n.

      • Eugene

D version has a chip, there is already metering at least)

        • Vitaly N

What prevents a dandelion from sticking to Helios? It will cost much cheaper, but the result on an amateur camera is the same.

          • Eugene

Dandelion 600+ UAH for today, well, UAH 300-400 can be saved with helios. I compare the photo with 1.8D and helios-1.8D more easily at f1.8 than helios at f2, noticeably in the small text. Therefore, I think I think it's better to dig up and take 1.8G?

            • Vitaly N

That's it. And it will also be with autofocus.

  • Eugene

Good time. Tell me please. If you do not take into account the presence of a motor, a carcass. Will this lens give a better picture than its non-motorized fellow D? Or is there a difference in focus? Does it make sense to overpay for G?

    • KalekseyG

Well Duc from their reviews you can see the difference. Arkady wrote, wrote ...

    • Valentine

The picture is better, but how important it will be for you and whether it is worth paying more for it is up to you.

    • Paul

I tried both versions on crop and ff and crop 1.4 on version
For me, a picture from this fifty-dollar coin looks much better than from a non-motorized colleague. The differences are noticeable not only to me, but also to the people whom I shot on them. (models choose the one with the motor, and they can no longer explain why they like the photo from it)))

      • Vladimir

Please tell me. is there a difference in quality from 50 to 1,4? Or do they differ only in aperture ratio?

        • Ivan

This lens has 7 aperture blades, while the 1.4 - 9 version has aperture. In theory, this should give smoother and more beautiful bokeh. But these are minor nuances for an amateur. The high-aperture version is still more for professional use.

  • Eugene

Hello everyone) Can you please tell me, is the bokeh on the FF more blurry than on the crop? I tried this lens on Nikon d5300 - now I can't pull it off by the ears) I'm looking to change over time to F1.4 and FF, I see a lot of people who praise sigma art, but the same Nikon's is 2 times cheaper (although the focus is in no hurry)

  • Ruslan

Hello! Who will tell you !? I want to buy a poltos! But I don’t know in which store !? That is, for a fifty dollars the price varies with a difference of 1000 or 1500gr !? That is, what is the difference between the price which is greater than the smaller? Or is there more expensive quality? Or a guarantee from the Japanese personally ?? Who bought in online stores, get some food out! Thanks to everyone who will help with choosing a store!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Large proven stores with an official guarantee from Nikon or from the store just right. I have links in the Prices section on the nameplate, you can use them.

      • Ruslan

Arkady! I’ve just looked at you here! )) But there are shops with a price of one and a half thousand grams cheaper! I’m a little embarrassed)) That is, how important is this guarantee, as I understand it, for 7 ??? Or is it just psychology! XNUMX? Or really lenses from Japan and better? Thanks Arkady for the answer! That is, I understand that official stores are a must have)) But is it possible to buy without an official guarantee ?? Maybe you know better ?? Thanks for the answer!

        • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon 50 / 1.8G has never been made in Japan, I have clearly indicated here what has been done in China (there are simply no other options).
The difference in price is for sellers, this is their field. In general, the official guarantee is better. But if the warranty from the store is 2-3 years, then it is quite good. Also, the different price depends on the place of delivery. For example, if they are supplied directly from Nikon, then the price is one, if they are supplied through ten intermediaries, for example, through Poland (example times and in the same store - two) - the price is different.

          • Ruslan

Arkady thanks :))) You helped me psychologically so to speak! Just had thoughts that they say if it’s cheaper then the basement collects)) And now I understand that it’s just not with an official supply)) Thank you! And one last question! Arkady! And how interesting can this off-guarantee work ??? That is, if my autofocus is broken, then I send to the factory and they send me a new one for free?))

            • Denis

              1000gr is not fifty dollars
              and 1500gr it can only be a heavily-used second-hand, and only a 50mm 1.8D version

              • B. R. P.

There is no version D yet. Cheaper than 1800 did not come across yet. But here, apparently it is not a question of cost, but of the difference in price in different stores.

            • Arkady Shapoval

Then warranty service can be obtained at any Nikon-certified service center.

              • Ruslan

Arkady hello! I apologize for such questions) What should the decals look like, or say so, on the official warranty sheet? That is, as I understand it, there must be a guarantee sheet from the store itself! And a separate guarantee sheet from the manufacturer itself? Or not? Thanks for the answer!

  • Catherine

Good afternoon! I really need your advice. Please tell me, I'm shooting with D3100 + Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G. Recently, such a problem has appeared: when switching to the focusing area mode “one AF point” I can take a photo only when focusing in the center, any point to the left / right does not focus (I hope I clearly described it))). And if you choose the “automatic AF area selection” mode, everything is fine, it focuses on the sides (but it's not always convenient for me). What could be the reason? It seems that he somehow began to miss the light. Previously, I calmly filmed indoors with an open aperture, but now it requires an increase in shutter speed ((

    • Valery A.

Do you choose another point with the joystick? And not at any moment, but immediately after focusing.

      • Catherine

Of course I choose)) before and after focusing, the effect is the same.

        • Valentine

Does not focus at all or tries to focus (runs the scale back and forth) and can not?

          • Catherine

For example: I select the extreme point on the right, he tries to focus but cannot. Doesn't catch focus.

            • Alexey

I have a similar situation with this lens, and on different cameras (d5100 and d700). But only in dark rooms. Under normal lighting, there are no problems, but it seems that it focuses more confidently in the central one. Probably, it should be so. I decided not to bother and focus on the central one, if necessary I will re-frame. I will experiment with other lenses - unsubscribe.

              • Catherine

I have it for a long time, before everything was fine. He survived several dozen weddings. Now even in good light it does not focus. The other day I took a walk, I just got tired of tin (
I put it on another camera (I thought that the reason was in fotik), but it turned out that in the lens.

  • Anatoly

Does not fall into focus or soap this lens. There is no front or back focus. And there is no sharpness anywhere except flash photography. If you manually adjust the focus, it starts to fall. The master said that only a carcass for the lens can be set up, and not vice versa. But with other lenses, my d3300 normally removes, so work with them will go away.

    • Michael

The camera is amended to eliminate front / back focus. If they are not, then this is not necessary. Post a link to the frame (preferably in raw) shot in automatic mode, where your lens soap or miss the focus.

I use Nikon D5100 with YONGNUO 35mm 1: 2 fix (YN35mm F2N). The question is - is it worth it to buy another Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G - will it add a lot in terms of picture quality?

    • Valentine

Someone will not add anything. There are users of the same lens, they are either 35 or 50, but not both. But in general, 35 and 50 - each has its own strengths. Nikonovsky 50 1,8G is a good balanced lens. Nice in design and sharp enough when open. Therefore, buying it, in my opinion, is not a waste of money. There is also an option when you buy in addition to 35mm from the same Yongnuo 100mm F2, but here you already need to know exactly why you want a second lens and what requirements you have for the result.

      • a lion

Yes, in fact, 35 YONGNUO still seems to suit me, I took it as a universal fix on the crop. But, you know, you always want something better, and here I would like to know - can anyone use these two lenses specifically and can tell from experience whether the Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G PICTURE is much better, what to spend on it money.

        • Valentine

I used yongnuo 35 and 50, nikon 35 dx and 50 1,8g. I can confidently say that the nikon 50 1,8g of the above is the best (if you do not take into account the differences in focal lengths of 35 and 50mm, which are interchanged only with a stretch and reservations). But it’s impossible to say how much he will give personally to you. Moreover, fifty dollars from yongnuo, although weaker than Nikon's, is also quite good, and at a price of 4-5 thousand for a completely new lens, it’s generally difficult to give definite advice. When youngnuo made a hundredth with f2, which in general turned out to be very working and lifting in price, the choice only became more complicated.

          • a lion

            thanks for the comment

  • anonym

Maybe someone will come in handy: I recently sold 50 1,8G because I didn’t like the soap angles on the full frame and the working diaphragm was only 4-5,6. He took 28mm 1,8G but still lacked medium focus and wanted to check other copies of 50 1,8G. To my surprise, the angle of the other lens was much sharper and the area of sharpness was almost flat, as it should be. Therefore, I took and bought this model again, this is such an experience. So it’s worth trying several instances of the same model on your camera, it doesn’t matter if it’s Soviet or modern optics.

    • Valentine

The first had a marriage or breakdown. Because working with 4 is not about this lens. Did you take it new for the first time?

      • anonym

The first was practically new, several dozen frames of run. The second is already pretty used, but with the best picture. Probably, this difference depends on the quality of the aspherical lens in the back block behind the diaphragm. I’m already used to the quality of the picture 85 1,8 and I want the same on other fixes of the 1,8 series

  • Bolat

Good afternoon. On the shelf is a Nikon F75 (film) without a lens (history is silent). I want to revive it and start filming. There is an amateur figure, I shoot it. Well, actually the question: If you buy this lens to the F75, will it work correctly. How the absence of the aperture adjustment ring will affect how the camera will focus (it is with a screwdriver) and how the distance will be measured (the lens does not have a kind of range finder).
Or still take the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8D. It’s just that in one video about the F75 with this lens I saw how it focuses, or rather I heard, because there is a lot of noise.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon 50 / 1.8G AF-S will work great on F75. Autofocus will work, the aperture can be controlled by means of the camera, for example, in “A” mode by rotating the rear selector.

If I’m a weasel, I’m going to see it as if I’ll have an active 50 mm for cropping for a second frame? In me, I’ve switched to 50 mm and a 5100 camera, I plan to switch to a second frame, I want to learn if I don’t kadi vin'єtuvannya?

    • Arkady Shapoval

At full frame on open apertures, vignetting will be noticeably stronger.

    Hello!
Bought Nikon 50 / 1.8G for my D90. Started testing and got confused. I shot a ruler at 45 degrees in weak artificial lighting. I put the ruler on the shelf so that its near end was on the left of the frame, and the far end was on the left. Snmal both from hand and from a tripod. From a distance of 0,7 - 1 m, it always gives back focus. The diaphragms were set from 1,8 to 2,8. From the closest possible distance it seems to hit. I shot faces at home with some lack of lighting from a distance of about 2,5 m. Also back-focus on all frames. I tried to remove from the LifeView mode and immediately the problem disappeared. Focuses normally.
What does that mean? Does phase focusing work poorly? Before that, he shot with whales 18-105. There is no such problem with him.

    • Arkady Shapoval

That means back focus. You need to contact the service.

      • Dmitriy

        Thanks for the quick response!
Arkady, can you advise. I took this lens (50 / 1.8G) for indoor shooting (I'm not a professional). As a rule, it is necessary to shoot various events at school with artificial lighting - holidays, concerts, lessons. On my 18-105, the frames are dark or blurry. But I have not yet tried to shoot with ISO above 400. Now I tried to compare at home these two lenses with the same focal length - 50 and the same aperture - 5. I took a “portrait of my wife” from a distance of about 1,3 m. Some noticeable difference in quality I did not see the karinka.
Maybe I generally take this lens in vain? The idea was to shoot with a lack of lighting at shorter shutter speeds and at the same time to master and understand what fixes give in comparison with zooms.

        • Arkady Shapoval

At the same aperture and shutter speed will be the same. The lens is primarily interested in the f / 1.8 aperture. For work, it is better to take any bright 18-105 / 17 instead of 50-2.8, preferably with a stub and an external flash.

          • Dmitriy

Thanks for the tip, as well as for your helpful reviews!

          • Dmitriy

Yes, but I looked at the prices for high-aperture zooms ... As I wrote above, I'm not a professional and it's too expensive for me.

            • anonym

Look at the used Sigma 17-50 2.8
The price does not bite much, and the glass is very high quality and left only positive emotions

  • Alexander

Hello! I bought this lens. I have been using it for a little over a month. Recently discovered such a strangeness. When you bring the lens to the ear at a very close distance, a high-frequency squeak is heard. After some time, the sound disappears until you press the shutter button. Is this a feature of the focus motor of these lenses?

  • Anatoly

    Hello!
I recently purchased this lens. Tell me, should the inner lens (the one in the black frame and move during focusing) play a little? When you flip the camera you can hear that it does not sit very tight and as if slightly backlash. It is also audible if you press lightly on the frame of the inner lens with your finger.

Thank you in advance for your reply!

    • Valery A.

On mine there is something similar, I think this is the norm - a moving element, some gaps are inevitable. There are no complaints about the results of the lens.

      • Anatoly

        Thank you for your reply!

  • Kirill

Hello, tell me, who is 1.8 sharper than Nikon AF 50 1.4D or Nikon 50 / 1.8G? or the same? and how are they compared in focus speed?

    • Oleg

Nikon 50 / 1.8G will be sharper. And faster in focus speed. 1.4 D in general, in my opinion, is not the most successful fifty dollars.

      • @ f_e_d_2

Are you in vain about 1.8 D! according to my tests, other lenses can be as sharp as 50_1.8D. INTERESTING, BUT OLD OLD HELIOS 81N, also did not yield to him! tested on D800E

        • Valentine

If we compare 1.4D, 1.8D, Helios 81H, YN 1.8 and 1.8G at full open, then, in fact, the picture with 1.8G is the best. With all due respect, the picture from Helios is far from the best. YN 1.8 is inferior to 1.8G, but somewhere +/- comes with 1.8D. About 1.4D: you need to know how to work with it, it is a very interesting lens (yes, there are some drawbacks too). About 1.4G - there are practically no complaints about the picture, but it would be appreciated more if it were faster and more reliable.

      • @ f_e_d_2

as for the focusing speed, they are about the same, just 1.8G With its internal motor, it is almost noiseless, so the illusion is created that it is faster.

  • @ f_e_d_2

My 50_1.8D makes 14-ray stars even at not very covered apertures, starting from 2.8. Here's the most interesting question, about 1.8G, this fifty-kopeck piece is the only one that has an aspherical lens in its optical scheme. What type of aspherical lens does it have? hybrid? Nikon technical support did not give an answer to this question, citing the fact that the manufacturer does not provide such information, but reports that it uses all 3 types in its lenses, including hybrid ones. can anyone disassemble? tried to sharpen with a file? :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, if it is not indicated that it is cast aspherics, then most likely it is a hybrid or plastic. But I recommend that you don’t take a steam bath at all about this, not a bit, never, under any circumstances (if this applies to Nikon optics) :)

  • Sergei

Experts, tell me please, I have the carcasses of two main systems, which fifty dollars will be better in image quality (sharpness, color reproduction, etc.) Canon 50 / 1.8II, or 50 / 1,8STM, or Nikon 50 / 1.8G?
Or what else is better in this price range?

Actually the same question always torments me about other focal lengths.
For some reason, Canon and Nikon lenses do not compare much.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Color reproduction will also be very camera dependent. On Canon - one, on Nikon - another, and even specific cameras will very, very much depend.
In general, the Nikon 50 / 1.8G optical circuit with aspherics is much newer than the Canon 50 / 1.8 / 1.8II, and in my opinion, the Nikon 50 / 1.8G is better at open.
They do not compare much, because you can’t just take and put a Canon lens on a Nikon camera and vice versa without losing functionality. And whoever has two systems hardly poses such questions.

      • Sergei

Thanks! I also thought that Nikon's aspheric should give some improvements.
While I use autofocus at 50 / 1.8II, for me it is much worse than even Helios-44, so I’m thinking, can replace it with 50 / 1.8G, and leave the Soviet lens on Canon.

  • Alexander

    Good.
I always shot my poltiynik in M / A mode.
Then I wanted to work in M mode, and for some reason after switching the mode nothing changed, he continued to work with autofocus until he switched to manual focus on the camera itself….
I think this is not normal lens behavior ...
Has anyone encountered a similar situation?

    • Michael

      Abnormal

  • Mila

Hello! Please tell me, for food photography on the Nikon D3100 it is better to take f / 1,4 or f / 1,8 50 mm

    • BB

If you do not take off the covered table, but take off the area the size of a standard plate (+/-), then I would generally take something longer telephoto (from 80mm), otherwise there will be strong geometric distortions.
But in general, 50 / 1.8g is preferable.
You may still need macro rings.

  • Alexey

Please tell me, today I was shooting at 50mm f 1.8g and noticed that the sharpness decreases with increasing distance from the subject. And such a moment still., I shoot at the central point, aim at the object (half-pressing), re-frame, and the camera itself changes focus ... What could it be?

    • Denis

I had such a problem. and maybe still there, did not check
either it’s really a problem of this lens (unsharp at a great distance), or when the object is far away, it already becomes narrower than the area in which the focus sensor works, and the background itself is more contrasting and detailed that the camera focuses on the background
I still have 40mm 2.8G, here it is sharp everywhere

      • Denis

(I do not mean the work of focus sensors at 40mm, but simply that it removes infinity well and I personally did not have such a problem)

    • Alexey

Autofocus mode is not AF-C by accident?

    • Michael

Sharpness for all lenses falls at infinity (perhaps your case). Autofocus operation when reframing means not af-s mode.

  • Catherine

Tell me, I choose a lens for portraiture with beautiful bokeh, is it worth considering 50 1.8G? The 85mm 1.8 test - the result suited me, but at the moment it is a little expensive for me. Will there be a noticeable difference, given my objectives for this lens? I have FF D610.

    • BB

The maximum for fifty dollars is a half-length portrait. If you shoot closer (larger), then strong geometric distortions will climb (the face will not be proportional). Therefore, fifty dollars is not a portrait, especially on FF. It will not replace the 85 in any way. Even a dark 70-300 4.5-5.6 will give better geometry than 50mm and can be used for portraits
