Review of the Nikon D3100. View Nikon D3100 body

Nikon D3100 is a wonderful amateur DSLR camera. I am often asked what good and not expensive Nikon SLR camera I would recommend to buy - I almost always I recommend Nikon D3100. In this review you can find information only about Nikon D3100 Points - that is, only about the camera itself without a lens. Nikon D3100 usually comes with an inexpensive lens kit, such a kit is called a 'kit kit'. Nikon D3100 with lens Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6VR is the most common option. If the complexity of an SLR camera is scary - do not be afraid, a special explanatory GUIDE mode is built into the camera, which will tell and tell everything. If the whale lens is not satisfactory, then at the end of this review, I give some tips for choosing good and inexpensive lenses.

View of Nikon D3100 from different sides

Nikon D3100 has excellent featureswhich are wired into a very light and small camera body. It has everything you need, from a 14.2 MP matrix, to the ability to shoot video in Full HD quality 1920 × 1080.

Key Features of Nikon D3100

1. The first thing to remember is that APS-C a camera in which, in comparison with the classic 3 mm film, the matrix is reduced. The matrix area of this baby is 5 times smaller than that of professional giants such as Nikon D800 or Nikon D3s. And at the same time, the area of the matrix (matrix value) same as for more advanced cameras Nikon D7100, D300s, D7000 и D5200... The matrix is the heart of a DSLR. The quality of photographs depends very much on its value. Therefore, picking up Nikon D3100, you can be sure that you can get photos from it no worse than on a very expensive professional Nikon D300s.

2. The Nikon D3100 sensor has crop factor in 1.5x. If you decide to use a cropped digital SLR camera, then you should understand that when using full-frame lenses, the viewing angle will be less than on Full Frame cameras. This is neither bad nor good. On the one hand, the TV range automatically increases, and on the other hand, the wide angle becomes a luxury. If you haven’t shot a film or a full frame before, then this remark about crop factor you can’t take it to heart.

3. Yes, the small Nikon D3100 has as many 14.2 Megapixels... This is really a lot, and if you megapixels are importantthen the Nikon D3100 will be just right. More megapixels, at the moment, only at Nikon D5100, D7000, D3x, D4, D800,D800E, D3200, D5200, D600, D610, D810, D4, D4s. If someone wants to be happy for the little Nikon D3100, then know that 14,2MP give 4608 x 3072 more pixels than expensive professional Nikon D3s, Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D300s etc. But, in fact, the number of megapixels does not affect the image so much. Their huge number is most likely just a marketing ploy. You can read my little note on the topic Battle of Megapixels.

4. ISO limits. Nikon D3100 can change its value ISO 100 to 12.800... Although, in fact, only from 100 to 3200, the values 6400 and 12800 are a kind of software cheat, even in the camera settings they are denoted by a tricky one - ISO HI1 and ISO HI2. I strongly advise against shooting at high ISO values. For comparison, Nikon D90, Nikon D300, Nikon D300s has an ISO 6400 ceiling.

5. Everyone is probably interested in the noise of the matrix. Understand correctly, any matrix will make noise at high ISO, even Nikon D4  with its ISO 204.800. There is only one question here - to what extent this or that noise level is acceptable for a person. With a camera for amateur shooting, it is quite possible to shoot at ISO up to 3200. Considering that this is an amateur camera, I have no complaints about the noise level at high ISO. Here sample photo without processing at high ISO, no noise reduction enabled, exported directly from RAW at ISO 3200 - View Example.

6. 3 frames per second. Speed is enough for many types of shooting. I recommend always thinking, but do you need more than 1 frame per second? Yes, there are sports photographers, wedding photography and many other commercial areas of photography, where speed plays an important role, but you should not demand a high rate of fire from an amateur camera. It is unlikely that anyone will be filming a serious report or wedding on the Nikon D3100. I have enough head speed of 2.5 frames per second on my favorite Nikon D40, and the same 3 frames per second on Nikon D80.

7. Autofocus. Focus system consists of 11 points. This is very good news for all Nikon D1 users. D1h, D1x, D100, D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70swho are planning to upgrade. Focusing with 11 points is very convenient. Focus points as many as cameras Nikon D90, D5000, D5100, D200, D80, D2hs, D2x, D2xs, D2h. Nikon Multi-CAM1000 is responsible for focusing. I had this focusing system on Nikon D90, there is no doubt about the quality of her work. You can read more about focusing systems on Nikon cameras here.

8. Display. 3-inch display, large, beautiful, contrasting, the same size as the Nikon D5000, Nikon D5100. The only thing is that he has only 230.000 points displaying information. More advanced cameras have over 900,000 points.

9. Video. Yes, Nikon D3100 can shoot Full HD 1920 × 1080 video. I am not a specialist in video quality. A nice innovation is the factor that the D3100 has autofocus when shooting video. For example, Nikon D90, D3s, D5000 does not auto focus when shooting movies. Autofocus is activated when the shutter button is pressed halfway, or is always on in mode AF-C... You can shoot at lower quality to save memory. The Live View button is combined with the start / stop button for video recording - it's very convenient. In video mode, aperture control is not available, to change the aperture values, you must first turn off Live View, set the desired aperture value, then turn Live View back on and start shooting.

10. The camera uses SD Flashcards. You can also use very high-capacity SDXCs. My device handles 32GB well SD HC Class 10. This is an important parameter; the speed of the camera depends on the speed of the card. A regular RAW file weighs on average 11-15 MB, 1 minute of FULL HD video weighs on average 150 MB. A JPEG L photo weighs on average from 3 to 8 MB.

11. The camera has a nice menu. The menu is made in the classic Nikon style. Everything is clear and accessible.

Photo on Nikon D3100

12. The camera is very compact and light. Weight is very important for the average camera user. The weight of the camera is one of the smallest among all DSLRs at Nikon. Nikon D3100 is even lighter for Nikon D40. Weight is very important, for example, when take pictures on a hike. The battery also holds a charge well, and without a flash it works out about 1000 frames.

Nikon D3100 has many other useful things:

  • dust matrix cleaning system
  • fast processor expeed 2
  • auto adjustment distortions
  • airflow control system to prevent matrix contamination
  • Live View Focus Mode
  • many tips on the menu and during shooting
  • good built-in flash
  • excerpt from 30s to 1 / 4000s
  • outputs for connecting to a computer and TV, port for GPS
  • Active D-lighting (which is either on or off).
  • Frame buffer puts 13 RAW files. Oddly enough, but the buffer is more than advanced Nikon D90, which has only 11 frames in the buffer for RAW. With this buffer, you can shoot continuously for more than 4 seconds in high-speed mode.

Disadvantages

This is an entry-level amateur Nikon digital SLR camera, therefore, it is not worth demanding anything more from it. But still, by the camera no focus motorthat will not allow the use of autofocus with cheap non-motor optics, for example, with the legendary Nikon 50mm F1.8D. At the camera no quick flash sync, minimum is 1 / 200s. Also, there is no flash control command mode, additional monochrome display. The camera does not know how to work with manual (old, without a microprocessor) type lenses AI-S. RAW files are available only with 12 bit color depth and with automatic compression. There is no rotary display and many other useful things.

Very often there is a choice of the first SLR camera among models Nikon D3000, D3100, D3200. Of course, everything new is always better than the old one, here is a comparative plate of the main parameters of these three cameras:

It can also be noted that the Nikon D3100 uses a pentaser mirror, a cheaper version of the pentaprism with 95% frame coverage. The camera does not support remote control, no bracketing and the camera has a new battery, not like in D3000That does not allow to combine batteries and chargers.

Personal impressions

The camera is very, very similar to its predecessors. The design looks a lot like Nikon D60, D3000. The only thing added a Live View button and a convenient switch of the shooting method. To the left of the camera there are cracks for microphone. The camera is really very light and small, almost the same as a baby Nikon D40. I recommend Nikon D3100 to anyone who wants an inexpensive DSLR with video function.

Important Note

If you choose your first DSLR, pay attention to the fact that the quality of photos depends very much on other parameters than on the camera. I wrote in more detail in my article - It is important how to take pictures, and not by what means. I note that I'm still shooting on the simplest Nikon D40.

At low ISO, the image itself depends little on the camera - the whole photo, its dynamics, color, tonal transitions, etc. very much depend on the lens and on camera shooting mode (saturated, portrait, etc.). Here sample image at ISO 3200 original resolution.

Recommendations

If there is free money, it would not be bad to buy a pretty fast lens, it could be Nikon 35mm F1.8AF-S и Nikon 50mm AF-S F1.8, in order to unleash the potential of the camera. The whale lens that comes with the kit can be used as a good option to achieve a wide viewing angle. If you have a lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkorthen they can shoot anything. What if 18-200mm - then this is one of the best options for all occasions.

Also, you can configure the Fn programmable button on the camera, I configure it to choose ISO. Before photographing set the shooting mode correctlyfor example, setting VI (saturated) for sharp and vibrant photos.

The camera has a super trick. When working with optics in manual focusing mode, the Rangefinder function can be used. The function helps you focus through the optical viewfinder. I am a big fan of manual optics, such as Helios-81H, therefore, along with Live View, this is an indispensable thing for improving manual focusing. But, as it turned out, Rangefinder does not work with manual optics, so it upset me a lot.

Conclusions

Nikon D3100 great camera for beginner photographers and for people who just need a good photo without unnecessary problems. Also, the camera shoots Full HD video with autofocus. Nikon D3100 is a compact, inexpensive and functional camera. It is enough to turn on the camera, remove the lens cap and press the shutter button and the sophisticated DSLR will do its job with a bang. Recommend.

    1. The article says “The camera does not have a focusing motor, which will not allow using autofocusing with cheap non-motorized optics, for example, with the legendary Nikon 50mm F1.8D” - will the exposure meter work with such a lens?
    2. “The camera does not have fast sync with flash, but the minimum is 1 / 200s” - ie. Does the external flash not work correctly at shutter speeds faster than 1 / 200sec? Did I understand correctly? I'm not a photographer just yet

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. Yes, it will. Everything except auto focus will work, including confirmation of focus using the green dot in the lower left corner of the viewfinder.
      2. The camera simply will not allow you to set the shutter speed to shorter than 1/200 (if you use the native SB flash). With non-native there will be black stripes in the photo at shutter speeds shorter than 1/200

Good day, I’m just starting to understand the process of “how, why and why”, perhaps I hurried up and bought a camera that was no longer relevant at the time of 2019, (as they write here in the comments, mentioning the phone for $ 500) Nikon D3100 with a stock lens 18 -55 VR (3rd series) and mileage 4700 for $ 100. The only omission I see is that the camera does not have a built-in focus motor, which is somewhat upsetting because looking at the lenses in the event of a future (possible) transition to more serious cameras (if it tightens) - alas ... but $ 100 is not $ 500 and arose questions:
1.- how relevant is it to look at a good 18-200 / 300 lens for this camera, which will subsequently be possible to use on a more serious camera. take pictures of landscapes, mountains, nature, plants, animals.
Is it worth buying optics with an integrated focusing system for this camera or is it just worth understanding, learning and giving to children? and then consider a camera with a built-in focusing system and lenses for it?
2.- I’ve been reading all day today, trying something, but either I haven’t found it yet (I’m looking and reading from my phone) or I was looking badly - where can I find information on how to properly configure the camera in different conditions (in manual mode) - for example, in Depending on the distance of the object, the amount of light, the direction of the light, at dusk, in a room with different lighting (warm / cold light), etc. options?
well, or maybe there is literature where you can find all this, as well as the nuances and the opportunity to try it all yourself and begin to learn the essence, and then the subtleties, so to speak.
Thank you in advance for your response, tips, links and help!

        • Michael

          1. It is worth taking lenses with a focusing motor. these are more modern models. The screwdriver was placed on old lens models, with some exceptions. This is more of a way to save.
          2. The main literature for you now is the manual for the camera. Setting the exposure in manual mode - there is a Tamba rule

        • Novel

          Remarks.
The mobile phone is always with you.
          1. There is no point. The ff lens will be difficult and expensive, the crop will get out of the market and in general there is a migration of manufacturers to crop. Because the old zk crop and merge at $ 100.
Learn better and then buy what you need.
Evaluate cam stab for 5 stops, focusing on the eyes and other joys.
          2. The question is generally incomprehensible. You shoot in the rabbi and rule the bb as you want. Few people shoot in fully manual mode; they usually shoot in aperture priority and sometimes in shutter priority. Why do you need a clean manual, especially since you have ovs and even on a muddy pentazerkal?

          • Novel

            - migration to bz)

          • Artem

“5 stops”, etc. Is there a translator of all this slang? don't get me wrong, I'm certainly grateful that you're trying to suggest, but these terms are not familiar to me.
I have the instruction from the camera in the form of one sheet, on Monday I will look on the Internet and print it out (since I work in the printing house 😉).
partly in a day of absorbing information and twisting the camera settings, I understand that where, the only thing that is not entirely clear to me is that in guide mode - I can make settings in more detail, but in manual mode - this is not possible. but there is an assumption that the guide mode allows you to tune every other profile, but maybe I'm wrong.
if there is an opportunity to give good links to articles - tusen takk!

                thank you 👍

  • Novel

I have owned one for several years, in conjunction with Nikon 35mm F1.8 AF-S - quite good in the category “for home, for family”. Lightweight and compact, that's what I like.

Outside the window, 2019 and I decided to purchase 3100 second-hand. Your advice on the 3100 is valid and what should I pay attention to.

    • anonym

If not a secret, what's the point?
For good color, there are cheaper options, for a less serious hobby for a DSLR, it should have built-in AF adjustment, for those who want just high-quality photos without hemorrhas with front back focus it is much better to buy mirrorless ones.

      • BB

If a person asks about the simplest DSLR, also used, then he probably does not have free funds for everything that you wrote about in the second part. Oh yes, color is a subjective and relative concept))

        • anonym

Oh no, color is the sRGB space (or any other) and a matrix that produces color with deviations within this space.
There are many tools for its accurate measurement, it is objective and absolute, it is measured where and how the camera is lying and how much relative to the reference.
The best cameras have deviations in saturation of not more than 5-6% and deviations in color within 3-4%.
          So learn the mat part)
Well, if vision problems, color blindness, and so on - then yes, then color is a subjective and relative concept))

        • anonym

if a person does not have free funds and asks about the simplest DSLR, also used, it makes sense to buy a Nikon D40, etc., the picture will be noticeably better than the D3100.
if there is 200 dollars, it makes sense to buy a full 5D frame.
let's face it - Nikon D3100 often produces a picture no better than smartphones, a lot of problems with back-front focus without the possibility of fine adjustment and there are no many functions that are in mirrorless cameras for the same money.
so the same question - If it's not a secret, is there any point in buying a D3100 in 2019?

          • BB

There are also Picture control settings and RAW format.

            • anonym

How does the equal help to correct the color curve if the color is incorrectly recorded in this same equal? Do you at least understand a little what rabbi and those are more what is picture control? )))
Can you read something like the alphabet of digital photography for a start? )

              • Arkady Shapoval

A beginner “does not see” the color and in general it is better to start with d3100. It takes 1-2 years for a person to “see” a color. Any literate person can write about the exact measurement of color, but not everyone will say that the “correct” color does not always give a winning picture :)

              • anonym

What is important, process or result? It is very difficult to get a sane photo on the d3100. After buying this “wonderful camera”, a beginner will be surprised to see that it will not be possible to take pictures beautifully with a whale lens. Get a logical advice to switch to fixes. Soap again. Yeah, front focus. We go to the service and pay money for the adjustment. So, abruptly, but the color is so-so ... the search for the developer begins .. it does not help, rushing brilliant green and carrots. People are beginning to understand what the flu is and why pictures are often better on a smartphone. Further, the sale of d3100 and often cooling off to the photo.
Why not immediately buy either ff or mirrorless? Then at least the difference between comparing the smartphone is more noticeable)

              • Igor

Only in reality, many, both beginners and some professionals, have problems with color not because of the camera, not because of optics, but because of their own handshake.
Classic: the photographer takes a model surrounded by foliage from all sides, and afterwards on the forums that the camera has a bad skin, everything is green, because the foliage can not reflect light.
Almost a classic: the photographer shoots in RAW, simply because they said so on the forums, while he does not know how to show it at all, and makes a fierce random, where the color is not nearly comparable to real.

In other cases, when the photographer immediately during shooting monitors the color and sources of parasitic shades, and knows how to work with color in post-processing, he will never have such problems. And as Arkady correctly noted, the right color is not always good.

The point of buying the D3100 is in the ratio of price and features. The D40 is an outdated and very slow camera with a CCD sensor, which already makes noise at ISO400. You probably never shot with a smartphone or D3100, if you don't see the difference. I filmed for both. I shot both branded and Chinese fixes, and none of them had any problems with back-front focus.
Switching to fixes is not a logical advice, this is advice from someone who has not learned how to work with composition and light, and constantly fumbles at the most open hole without thinking. Buying an UPC just for the sake of precise focus? Okay, but the problem is that budget UPCs are greatly reduced in functionality compared to DSLRs, and is it worth abandoning normal autofocus, viewfinder, ergonomics just for the sake of this?

Sorry, but you’re definitely a layman, and on the forums they scribbled comments much more often than they did in reality.

              • Alexander

Igor, you obviously don’t understand what they are telling you.
Nikon D40 is a camera with an excellent (in color) Sony sensor, according to many (including Arcadia) - one of the best Nikons in color in general. Yes, it is noisy at high ISO but it's worth it.
This question is sorted out? Go ahead.
Your example of foliage reflexes doesn't make sense, reflexes will be on any camera. Absolutely. Who are you discussing with - it is not clear, with your fantasies?
If the matrix has color rendering errors, then by any post-processing you will not return the semitones and shades that the camera simply did not take off. While everything is available for understanding?
Before accusing members of the forum that someone is a "layman", first read what is the color rendering of the matrix, what is post-processing (and why the color rendering curve of the matrix does not correct post-processing), learn to be less rude to strangers and maybe expand your vocabulary with synonyms from the great language a little higher the level of what "snags".
How would you explain, if someone has an opinion different from yours, this does not mean that it is incorrect :)

                PS
about front / back focus - just call the European service nikon. or talk to the nikon club with the moderators - it is popular to explain to you that the phase AF of a DSLR always has a front / back (often masked by a big grip!), this is the specificity of mass production and inherent adjustment error. that's why people adjust each lens for a specific carcass in the nikon service, no matter that the lenses cost 2000-3500 euros. read in detail on nikon-club-ru

    • BB

If you have enough funds - look towards the D5100 - the matrix is more interesting + the functionality is less curtailed.
7xxx is even more interesting, but the price is higher.
D3100 is the very minimum that I would recommend for a beginner as a relatively versatile device. Anything older has a fairly low working Iso.

      • anonym

what is the point of buying 5xxx or 7xxx crop if for the same money you can buy bu FULL FRAME ???

      • anonym

Crops of entry-level DSLRs do not make sense at all, it's money thrown away.

        • anonym

          I agree. Immediately medium format!

          • BB

Why start with the d3100? Why not with kenon 5d? Or not with a mirrorless kenon m series, the first models at ridiculous prices are sold?
What is the sacred meaning of the crop of a DSLR with front back focus and without the possibility of adjustment, with a mediocre picture, without normal video and normal af on a dark pentazerk and not the cheapest? Why not with Nikon D40?
As for the color, I absolutely disagree. A person with normal vision and not a color blind without problems distinguishes a pair of a D3100 image and a 5D Kenon, e.g. not in favor of a D3100).

    • Pokemon

"What is the sacred meaning of a mirror for a mirror ..."
The sacred meaning of a budget crop is exactly the same as that of rusty Zhiguli, which are given to a novice driver after obtaining a license. 1: 1

    • Michael

5d still needs to be found in working order, but here a beginner with no experience - you can fly well, especially since pennies were popular with commercial photographers. A 3100, 40, 80, etc. Used by amateurs

  • Lana

You have probably already been tortured with such questions, but still I will repeat myself, because there is no one else to ask ... please tell me which is better to take nikon: d3000 with 18-105 lens or d3100 with 18-55?
    thank you in advance.

    • Lana

and one more question: how to surely check whether everything is fine with the camera and lens (I want to buy used)?

      • anonym

The most correct "thank you" is to take an experienced photographer with you to assess the condition.

    • anonym

in this formulation, d3000 and 18-105 are better.
18-55 colloquially referred to as a carcass plug. 18-105 is even a little better both in the picture and in the focal.
but with both options, your picture will be at the smartphone level, sometimes better, sometimes worse (now the high will rise)))

“And one more question: how to check for sure if everything is good with the camera and the lens (I want to buy a used one)?”
for sure in any way. for example, water gets into it, the camera can die after a couple of months for no apparent reason. etc. if there is no experience at all, ask a person with experience to check for you. or buy something new, DSLRs are already leaving the market, they have been replaced by mirrorless ones.

    • Denis

need to look at the state. and at a cost. I would choose d3100
and do not believe those who say that the smartphone takes off like a camera (especially if at the same time they see the difference between 18-55 and 18-105)

      • Valery A.

And if you plan to shoot people (portraits) and do not need video, - 3000 + 18-105. Examine the FA and the lens externally - are there any strong wear and tear, scratches, chips from possible blows, ask the seller to take a picture of you, do you like it? Are the details of the face sharply visible when magnified? So it works.

      • anonym

I recommend reading Arkady's article on smartphones. And yes, smart often shoots better by buffering a dozen frames, more accurate AF and stub.
If you do not see the difference between the plug 18-55 and 18-105 and do not understand what MTF is, then at least pay attention to the focal))).

    2. Warning. Yesterday the mirror fell off. We used the fully manual Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1: 1,8 2158077 lens at infinity in Live View. Apparently the rear lens protrudes too much at infinity for the d3100 and touches the mirror when switching to live view

Does the lens for FF cling to the crop mirror? At least - strange (it is not clear from your message which 50 / 1.8)

Nevertheless, it is very strange that a lens designed for FF (even a film one) somehow caught the mirror.

    • Alex

Very strange. The rear lens cannot protrude so much that a mirror will hit it.

  • Alexey

Tell me, I don't understand, will it work from the remote control? Ancient d40 worked ...

Hello! I have this fotik, with Kitovsky and Helios lenses. So I think, is it worth buying a replacement helik in terms of 50mm or 35mm? The problem is that it is sometimes difficult to handle a manul lens.

    • Michael

If you need autofocus, then it’s worth it)

    • Alex

So you decide. Autofocus is much more convenient. 50 or 35 again, you decide). 50 is almost a portrait, 35 for a little bit of everything.

  • anonym

Here they are scratching ... Well, how can a smartphone shoot better, even the oldest crop? The coolest smartphone, never shoots better than a crop, even a soap dish shoots better than your smartphone. Any smartphone has a matrix size of a fingernail. Zoom in from a smartphone to 100% and all the poop will immediately pop up, and if it's better, then shoot with a smartphone and don't mislead people.

  • Galina

Good day. I choose my first SLR. The choice is between the D80 and D3100. Which one is better for a beginner.

    • BB

The D3100 has a newer matrix, with a higher resolution (14 megapixels) and higher sensitivity.
If you don't plan on purchasing 'non-motorized' AF lenses, the D3100 will be more versatile overall.

    • anonym

D 3100 will be easier for a woman's hand, and on vacation you will want to shoot a video. how "fell into a waterfall" mlm something like that =)

  • anonym

Examples are full size in the studio ...

D80 is an ancient, heavy apparatus with good ergonomics, D3100 is small, lightweight, more modern. D80 matrix 10 m-pixel, D3100-16 m-pixel. D3100 is less noisy at high iso, D80 screwdriver. Whatever they say, but for me 16 is better than 10. The very one has D3100, D5300 and prof. D300. So the best (in detail) pictures are on the D5300 with a 24 m-pixel sensor. Plus, the D3100 displays more than 3 versus 2.5 inches, plus the D3100 can shoot 1080p video at 30k / s. D80 is a good device, but I would probably take the D3100. His D3100 is more than satisfied.

  • Marina

My personal opinion…. no matter what kind of camera you have in your hands ... nikon d3100, more expensive or a smartphone - if you don't know how to take pictures, if you don't see the picture - the photos will be either expensive or cheap. My photos on Nikon 3100 are better than those of professionals on expensive cameras))). Therefore, for a home camera, this is a great option. Believe me, do not read the subtleties of the camera! It will not help you make good pictures (If you think that the more expensive, the prettier it will be)

  • Marina

Here is an example of the photo that turns out on the nikon 3100

  • Marina

    Another example of nikon 3100

    • Alexander

Marina, no offense - what should you see in these pictures? as for the 1MP resolution in which you laid it out quite well, this is the level of smartphones two or three years ago. as for a hint of serious work - the first photo, apparently, the defects are grease, if you put it in the original resolution it will be immediately visible. the second photo is a marriage according to DD, the background is simply absent. even pixel 3 would render it better due to buffering.
The picture is very different depending on the technique. The surgeon will not normally cut out appendicitis with an ax, even a brilliant surgeon :)
Therefore, let's not once again start a flood about the importance of technology.
Everything is important - and the technique, and who is behind the technique and what and in what conditions you shoot.
And you will never shoot such shots on the D3100 - simply because there is no such color and halftones.

These photos were taken on a Panasonic S1 + 50S.
Arkady also appreciated the new S1 and S1R and their color.
As far as I understand, Israeli production matrices are installed there, at least the older one is used in Lake Q2.

These sensors have very dense color filters and are optimized for low ISO and day color. High ISO suffered accordingly :)

The cameras themselves are a triumph of engineers and practitioners over marketing and accounting. Cameras are sharpened for color and comfortable work of the pros.
With all the pros and cons of this approach.

IMHO, these are really the best cameras in terms of color, ergonomics, weight distribution, features and video from the time of Mark 2.
AF is not the best and cannot be the best for obvious reasons, I hope no need to explain.
the color turned out - really WOW.

    What else purple fill?
    Fujah had 16, 24, and 26MP matrices.
And a bunch of color profiles in each camera.
    There is no violet fill.
    What is “purple fill” вообще
For certain Nikon models, the BB can take off in greenish-yellow shades, under certain shooting conditions and certain lenses.
Sometimes it can be fixed, sometimes not.
In Fuji, AutoBB is fairly accurate when working with a native developer. If there is a deviation, it is much less critical than Nikon.
Yes, there is a tendency to accentuate certain shades on a standard profile, but this is corrected elementarily in the camera - all the tools are there and corrections can be made and everything is done conveniently.
And yes, the propensity for certain shades in 16/24 / 26MP matrices is different. 24MP pulls more into the green than 16 and the new 26MP. So no need to generalize.

    • anonym

On x trans fujahs stand the standard Sony matrices with curved color filters of the x trans pattern. The default color profile gives gives a shift in magenta and violet. This topic was discussed in great detail at Martynov’s podakuni; there is such an ambassador for Fujah.
Camjeg fuja is easily identified by this coloration. There are many videos on the tube that compare fuj with kenon and sony, everything is clearly visible there.
The images above this parasitic fill do not have, and in general the matrices on Sony are not very similar. So this is either a canon or a watering can or a Panasonic full frame.

The fact that a crop camera gives at least a color-adequate result in almost any light is a plus. The fact that immediately gives a PLEASANT color to the eyes, with raw c which you do not need to fuck is a plus squared. Go to hell with your theory - the result is important to me at the exit. Nikon Z series and Nikon CMOS DSLRs do not shine at all with color and midtones except for the magnificent Nikon D850 where the matrix is not Sony and the profiles are made for Canon.

  • Olga

Alexey, I am not personally acquainted with Konstantin Zverev to claim that he has a Leica or something else. You went through all the cameras, guessing at which the sent frames were taken. And it would be more logical to look at the author of the photos and look for his photos, that I and did. You have a different logic of thinking. Someone likes to guess, I do not. And then you don't have to rely so blindly on your "inspector", everyone must learn to have their own opinion. And at the expense of Marina and her advice to Galina to buy Nikon D3100 and master the photography technique, and not spend money on expensive cameras, I agree with her. And her photos are normal for an amateur. Some on this site, who position themselves as gurus in photography, render photos much worse. Galina, and you listen to Marina's advice, she tells you correctly.

    • Alexey

Yes, we sorted it out, and there were people who know for sure, this is the beauty of the community. And your logic seems to have let you down. Alas, it is like that, it depends on the amount of incoming information, in your case it was not enough. I personally had a lot of fun guessing - thanks to Alexander (but a little less pathos: "The triumph of engineers ..." etc., although the camera is really good). And what about Galina's training - this is how you can learn from anyone, but on the D80, this process can potentially move further than on the D3100. Whether she needs this is another question, and it's up to her to decide. How did you write there: “everyone should learn to have their own opinion.”?

      • Alexander

this is not pathos, it was a quote :)
In a discussion of Panasonic, several well-known pros said the obvious idea that usually cameras are made by accountants and then cut by marketers.
Space names are invented for pseudo-new technologies and all this is good on paper but in reality the picture does not change or worsens at best.
the same eggs are invented but a side view of the z-type is a chance of pixel arrangement :)))
they made mini-cases that were overheating, cut joysticks, made an uncomfortable flu, mini-buttons that had to be pressed with a stylus, cut off the second slot and put mediocre matrices.
Panasonic is simply made as a convenient tool for the pros to get great shots and videos. suddenly. for the first time in a long time. on the first try :)

Olga, many skills in working with old cameras are useless when working with modern ones.
Arkady uploaded a video with a Kiev photographer Oleg. Read Oleg’s enthusiasm after changing the mirror to a mirrorless mirror.
How pleased he is with the eyes, the accuracy of the eyes in general, the convenience of seeing the exposure immediately. So it says the pros.
Forget about working with only the central AF point, recoding, I’ll take care of the expo bracketing to guess, plus cam stab changes the calculation of the exposure / movement minutes.
Sales of DSLRs fell 37% this year, the secondary is overwhelmed by them. The difference between top bu DSLRs and budget ones is as minimal as ever. If you already want to learn a cheap SLR, it obviously makes sense to take something better than whistle-blowers of which kenikons riveted for state employees.

What camera was the photo taken on?

    • Novel

It's hard to say. The colors are tightly killed by tinting, the photo is muddy. The answer is, this can be removed for anything, even a xiaomi smartphone or meiza will be removed better.

      • BB

There, in my opinion, the focus is somewhere behind, on the wall or in the bushes. It can be shot even with a DSLR on the machine, and / or with a high Iso, and a diaphragm clamped above the diffraction threshold. But most likely with something with a small matrix

    • Arkady Shapoval

I see no reason to guess and consider a bad photo

Hello Arkady and everyone present in the discussion. I ask for advice on purchasing a camera for home photography and shooting a child in kindergarten. I have three options: Nikon D3100 18-55mm (used), Canon EOS 5Dm2 24-105mm (heavily used and even heavy) and the new Nikon D5600 18-140mm. I tried to photograph on the first two (of course, auto mode), then on Nikon, somehow sharper than photography or something. For the price of used ears - Nikon 10000, Canon 30000, and the new Nikon 5600 46000. So I think, buy something that is cheaper, plus a new lens, or just a new camera. Thanks in advance.

    • Valery A.

Hello. You yourself have already almost chosen - you don't like Canon 5d2 (although the conclusion that it makes less sharp pictures is rather unexpected), you are considering an outdated and fresh nikon - there is a desire to save money. I think 5600 is not 4,5 times better than 3100. Multi-pixel will be a hindrance to you, the lens, however, is better, and brings closer closer, but 18-55 is enough for a room. The 3100 is also more “noisy”, the room will often lack light, but the 5600 will also not be enough, the output is in an on-camera flash that can puff into the ceiling (I would recommend a simple and inexpensive sb400). And after shooting and seeing what focal lengths are often used at 18-55, it will be possible to look at fixes like 35 / 1,8, 50 / 1,8g, 85 / 1,8g, or take a high-aperture zoom lens, like Tamron or Sigma 17 -50 / 2,8. With them, there will be more light and the pictures should be more beautiful, and maybe more artistic.

      • Irina

Thank you very much for the advice.

        • Alexander

I completely agree with Valery, to dump 5600t.r. for d46 There is no sense. 3100 or 3200 is enough. Instead of 18-55, you can buy 18-105 (5-7t.r. stands), and an external flash (native B.O. or a new Chinese, always with a swivel head) for shooting indoors.

  • Anton

I have been using d3100 since 2012, I was happy with everything. Now, for technical reasons, you need to switch to another camera. This is mainly the market for used equipment up to 20-25k. What is the point of moving to? The use of manual lenses is important

    • B. R. P.

BZK for manuals is generally more convenient.

      • Anton

I consider the BZK, too, but only nex5 get into such a budget, and well, right up to the a5100. Maybe you should pay attention to any particular model?
Well, DSLRs are also possible. Is canon easier with manuals, can any of them be considered?
Nikon d7100 does not fit into the budget

        • B. R. P.

I don’t know your prices, but it’s possible Canon 5d will fit in your budget, you will have a full-fledged, beautiful color picture from full-frame manual lenses.

          • Anton

I agree, 5d would not be bad, but good options also do not fit into the budget. I understand that you should not switch to 7d?
And what about the BZK, NEX-5 or more recent models?

            • B. R. P.

Canon 7d is a reportage camera, if you use these features, then why not. Purely for the manual, it is possible to consider other cropped Canon. On the one hand, on the one hand, newer models are generally better, but also more expensive, more megapixels, etc. With the NEX-5 you will have focus only on the display, unlike the same Canon. See which is more convenient for you.

              • Anton

Well, if then the report is not the main one, then if you choose between the more budget, say, canon 600d and Sony NEX-5r, in fact, the choice is only in convenience?
Considering that before that there was a Nikon d3100, I don’t want to change the price for soap, so the questions I have are) which camera to switch from d3100 would be like a step forward, and not in place)

  • B. R. P.

Technically, I think the Canon 600d and Sony NEX5 will not give you much of a step forward, apart from more flexibility in how to use the manuals. The same Canon 7d is a more advanced camera. Nikon after d3100, in my opinion, is interested in the 7000th series or the older 300th. Canon except 7d - 40, 50d or 60, 70d. If you plan to use AF optics, the range of DSLRs is larger, there are many available used ones. Optics are usually more expensive for bzk af, plus the nuances of autofocus in comparison with czk.

    • Anton

Now everything becomes clear. Thank you for the advice, I will consider when buying in the future)

      • B. R. P.

Yes, please, I'm glad if I managed to help me at least with something)

  • Irina

Hello, please tell me, can I combine the D3100 and the Helios 44-2 2/58 lens from the zenith? If so, which adapter do you need to purchase?

    • BB

A lot of information on this matter - in the review 44-2 (https://radojuva.com/2012/04/obzor-gelios-44m-58mm-f2-0/)
In short, there are three use cases:
      a) a simple cheap adapter М42-Nikon_F (without a lens) - there is no infinity, you can focus up to about 2 meters and closer
      b) an adapter with a lens - there is "infinity", but the picture is VERY blurry, especially when the aperture is open
      c) a simple adapter M42-Nikon_F (without a lens) + alteration of the lens = the highest quality option.

Well, do not forget that Nikon will not have exposure metering, that is, you have to shoot completely in manual mode, choosing the shutter speed, aperture and ISO, shoot and watch what happens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes you can. M42-Nikon F adapter, but there will be a lot of difficulties when working with 44-2 on the d3100

  • Victoria

Good evening! Tell me please. Will the Sigma 24mm f2.8 MC Macro Super Wide II AF lens work with this camera? And what wide-angle fixed lenses with a beautiful picture (very budgetary) can you advise. I want 35mm.

    • B. R. P.

It will be installed on the camera (if the lens mount is Nikon). AF will not work. Aperture control and other electronics, most likely, too. Very budget-friendly shirky fixes and a beautiful picture are two incompatible things.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The Sigma 24mm f2.8 MC Macro Super Wide II AF autofocus will not work on the d3100. From the budget - Yongnuo 35 / 2

      • Victoria

Thanks for the answer. I just didn't quite understand, it won't install at all and won't work or will it be able to work, but only as a manual one? Sorry if the question is stupid, I don't know much about the technical side of the issue) and his bayonet is probably Pentaxian ... Maybe you can put some kind of adapter through?
I know about Yongnuo 35/2, but this will not work at all on the crop ((

  • Victoria

In addition to the previous one: R-K mount with his (Sigma 24mm f2.8 MC Macro Super Wide II AF)

    • BB

You need a lens with a Nikon F mount.
As already mentioned above, the Yongnuo 35/2 will be the most budgetary one with autofocus. On Ali can be found for $ 80-90 - new.
It will be fully compatible with your camera and will work in all modes. Of the features - not very smart AF, but there is hardly anything better for this money.

    • B. R. P.

It will not work with a “foreign” mount without an adapter, but with an adapter there will be not only manual focus, but also a mismatch between the working sections of the camera and the lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Not installed, no adapters.
