Review of the Nikon D3100. View Nikon D3100 body

Nikon D3100 is a wonderful amateur DSLR camera. I am often asked what good and not expensive Nikon SLR camera I would recommend to buy - I almost always I recommend Nikon D3100. In this review you can find information only about Nikon D3100 Points - that is, only about the camera itself without a lens. Nikon D3100 usually comes with an inexpensive lens kit, such a kit is called a 'kit kit'. Nikon D3100 with lens Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6VR is the most common option. If the complexity of an SLR camera is scary - do not be afraid, a special explanatory GUIDE mode is built into the camera, which will tell and tell everything. If the whale lens is not satisfactory, then at the end of this review, I give some tips for choosing good and inexpensive lenses.

View of Nikon D3100 from different sides

Nikon D3100 has excellent featureswhich are wired into a very light and small camera body. It has everything you need, from a 14.2 MP matrix, to the ability to shoot video in Full HD quality 1920 × 1080.

Key Features of Nikon D3100

1. The first thing to remember is that APS-C a camera in which, in comparison with the classic 3 mm film, the matrix is reduced. The matrix area of this baby is 5 times smaller than that of professional giants such as Nikon D800 or Nikon D3s. And at the same time, the area of the matrix (matrix value) same as for more advanced cameras Nikon D7100, D300s, D7000 и D5200... The matrix is the heart of a DSLR. The quality of photographs depends very much on its value. Therefore, picking up Nikon D3100, you can be sure that you can get photos from it no worse than on a very expensive professional Nikon D300s.

2. The Nikon D3100 sensor has crop factor in 1.5x. If you decide to use a cropped digital SLR camera, then you should understand that when using full-frame lenses, the viewing angle will be less than on Full Frame cameras. This is neither bad nor good. On the one hand, the TV range automatically increases, and on the other hand, the wide angle becomes a luxury. If you haven’t shot a film or a full frame before, then this remark about crop factor you can’t take it to heart.

3. Yes, the small Nikon D3100 has as many 14.2 Megapixels... This is really a lot, and if you megapixels are importantthen the Nikon D3100 will be just right. More megapixels, at the moment, only at Nikon D5100, D7000, D3x, D4, D800,D800E, D3200, D5200, D600, D610, D810, D4, D4s. If someone wants to be happy for the little Nikon D3100, then know that 14,2MP give 4608 x 3072 more pixels than expensive professional Nikon D3s, Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D300s etc. But, in fact, the number of megapixels does not affect the image so much. Their huge number is most likely just a marketing ploy. You can read my little note on the topic Battle of Megapixels.

4. ISO limits. Nikon D3100 can change its value ISO 100 to 12.800... Although, in fact, only from 100 to 3200, the values 6400 and 12800 are a kind of software cheat, even in the camera settings they are denoted by a tricky one - ISO HI1 and ISO HI2. I strongly advise against shooting at high ISO values. For comparison, Nikon D90, Nikon D300, Nikon D300s has an ISO 6400 ceiling.

5. Everyone is probably interested in the noise of the matrix. Understand correctly, any matrix will make noise at high ISO, even Nikon D4  with its ISO 204.800. There is only one question here - to what extent this or that noise level is acceptable for a person. With a camera for amateur shooting, it is quite possible to shoot at ISO up to 3200. Considering that this is an amateur camera, I have no complaints about the noise level at high ISO. Here sample photo without processing at high ISO, no noise reduction enabled, exported directly from RAW at ISO 3200 - View Example.

6. 3 frames per second. Speed is enough for many types of shooting. I recommend always thinking, but do you need more than 1 frame per second? Yes, there are sports photographers, wedding photography and many other commercial areas of photography, where speed plays an important role, but you should not demand a high rate of fire from an amateur camera. It is unlikely that anyone will be filming a serious report or wedding on the Nikon D3100. I have enough head speed of 2.5 frames per second on my favorite Nikon D40, and the same 3 frames per second on Nikon D80.

7. Autofocus. Focus system consists of 11 points. This is very good news for all Nikon D1 users. D1h, D1x, D100, D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70swho are planning to upgrade. Focusing with 11 points is very convenient. Focus points as many as cameras Nikon D90, D5000, D5100, D200, D80, D2hs, D2x, D2xs, D2h. Nikon Multi-CAM1000 is responsible for focusing. I had this focusing system on Nikon D90, there is no doubt about the quality of her work. You can read more about focusing systems on Nikon cameras here.

8. Display. 3-inch display, large, beautiful, contrasting, the same size as the Nikon D5000, Nikon D5100. The only thing is that he has only 230.000 points displaying information. More advanced cameras have over 900,000 points.

9. Video. Yes, Nikon D3100 can shoot Full HD 1920 × 1080 video. I am not a specialist in video quality. A nice innovation is the factor that the D3100 has autofocus when shooting video. For example, Nikon D90, D3s, D5000 does not auto focus when shooting movies. Autofocus is activated when the shutter button is pressed halfway, or is always on in mode AF-C... You can shoot at lower quality to save memory. The Live View button is combined with the start / stop button for video recording - it's very convenient. In video mode, aperture control is not available, to change the aperture values, you must first turn off Live View, set the desired aperture value, then turn Live View back on and start shooting.

10. The camera uses SD Flashcards. You can also use very high-capacity SDXCs. My device handles 32GB well SD HC Class 10. This is an important parameter; the speed of the camera depends on the speed of the card. A regular RAW file weighs on average 11-15 MB, 1 minute of FULL HD video weighs on average 150 MB. A JPEG L photo weighs on average from 3 to 8 MB.

11. The camera has a nice menu. The menu is made in the classic Nikon style. Everything is clear and accessible.

Photo on Nikon D3100

Photo on Nikon D3100

12. The camera is very compact and light. Weight is very important for the average camera user. The weight of the camera is one of the smallest among all DSLRs at Nikon. Nikon D3100 is even lighter for Nikon D40. Weight is very important, for example, when take pictures on a hike. The battery also holds a charge well, and without a flash it works out about 1000 frames.

Nikon D3100 has many other useful things:

  • dust matrix cleaning system
  • fast processor expeed 2
  • auto adjustment distortions
  • airflow control system to prevent matrix contamination
  • Live View Focus Mode
  • many tips on the menu and during shooting
  • good built-in flash
  • excerpt from 30s to 1 / 4000s
  • outputs for connecting to a computer and TV, port for GPS
  • Active D-lighting (which is either on or off).
  • Frame buffer puts 13 RAW files. Oddly enough, but the buffer is more than advanced Nikon D90, which has only 11 frames in the buffer for RAW. With this buffer, you can shoot continuously for more than 4 seconds in high-speed mode.

Disadvantages

This is an entry-level amateur Nikon digital SLR camera, therefore, it is not worth demanding anything more from it. But still, by the camera no focus motorthat will not allow the use of autofocus with cheap non-motor optics, for example, with the legendary Nikon 50mm F1.8D. At the camera no quick flash sync, minimum is 1 / 200s. Also, there is no flash control command mode, additional monochrome display. The camera does not know how to work with manual (old, without a microprocessor) type lenses AI-S. RAW files are available only with 12 bit color depth and with automatic compression. There is no rotary display and many other useful things.

Very often there is a choice of the first SLR camera among models Nikon D3000, D3100, D3200. Of course, everything new is always better than the old one, here is a comparative plate of the main parameters of these three cameras:

It can also be noted that the Nikon D3100 uses a pentaser mirror, a cheaper version of the pentaprism with 95% frame coverage. The camera does not support remote control, no bracketing and the camera has a new battery, not like in D3000That does not allow to combine batteries and chargers.

Personal impressions

The camera is very, very similar to its predecessors. The design looks a lot like Nikon D60, D3000. The only thing added a Live View button and a convenient switch of the shooting method. To the left of the camera there are cracks for microphone. The camera is really very light and small, almost the same as a baby Nikon D40. I recommend Nikon D3100 to anyone who wants an inexpensive DSLR with video function.

Important Note

If you choose your first DSLR, pay attention to the fact that the quality of photos depends very much on other parameters than on the camera. I wrote in more detail in my article - It is important how to take pictures, and not by what means. I note that I'm still shooting on the simplest Nikon D40.

At low ISO, the image itself depends little on the camera - the whole photo, its dynamics, color, tonal transitions, etc. very much depend on the lens and on camera shooting mode (saturated, portrait, etc.). Here sample image at ISO 3200 original resolution.

Recommendations

If there is free money, it would not be bad to buy a pretty fast lens, it could be Nikon 35mm F1.8AF-S и Nikon 50mm AF-S F1.8, in order to unleash the potential of the camera. The whale lens that comes with the kit can be used as a good option to achieve a wide viewing angle. If you have a lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkorthen they can shoot anything. What if 18-200mm - then this is one of the best options for all occasions.

Also, you can configure the Fn programmable button on the camera, I configure it to choose ISO. Before photographing set the shooting mode correctlyfor example, setting VI (saturated) for sharp and vibrant photos.

The camera has a super trick. When working with optics in manual focusing mode, the Rangefinder function can be used. The function helps you focus through the optical viewfinder. I am a big fan of manual optics, such as Helios-81H, therefore, along with Live View, this is an indispensable thing for improving manual focusing. But, as it turned out, Rangefinder does not work with manual optics, so it upset me a lot.

Conclusions

Nikon D3100 great camera for beginner photographers and for people who just need a good photo without unnecessary problems. Also, the camera shoots Full HD video with autofocus. Nikon D3100 is a compact, inexpensive and functional camera. It is enough to turn on the camera, remove the lens cap and press the shutter button and the sophisticated DSLR will do its job with a bang. Recommend.

I have a D3100 camera with a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR kit (made in Thailand) and an additional Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED SWM (made in China, which was bought and fastened to a maximum 3-4 times, 30-50 photos each time), basically I shoot on a whale 18-55, because I take off only 2-3 times a year on vacation but on the seas or on trips. It’s even ceased to carry with me 55-200, now the idea was born to exchange my both for 1 more universal, 18-105, 18-135, 18-140 ... can anyone have an interest in the exchange? Interested in Moscow and the Moscow region.
write suggestions here or on mail ovroman2@mail.ru
Special thanks to Arkady for creating such a powerful site, not just a whole community, with a huge amount of important and very interesting information ...

  • Novel

if of course there is any sense at all in this or just sell 55-200 and use only the whale? I honestly have sand on the beach for my photos, I think it’s quite enough for me on a motorcycle or a photo of a caught carp, it’s just a shame that this 55-200 is idle, but you can probably please someone who is engaged in more advanced photography, even at the initial level

    • Paul

If you do not need 55-200, then of course sell. But the use of such lenses is quite specific and there will be very few buyers. Although ... the price also matters :) I use Tamron 70-300 "macro" quite often, but only because I got it for free. I would never buy it for the same purposes.

Hello Arkady, and all who are not difficult to give advice. The last 2 years I’ve been shooting on Nikon D3100 + 35mm 1.8. I shoot mostly portraits, family less often nature. Recently I thought about changing the camera, I want it with a built-in autofocus motor for acquiring not expensive optics in the future. I liked the D7100, but a little expensive, and the D7000 is scolded for a bad skinton. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity to try to take pictures from cameras (. Advise which model you should pay attention to, or maybe you should pick up and buy a D7100? Thanks in advance).

    • Pacifid man

I have been using the camera for 2.5 years - a camera for 10k s + tenacious - I survived the fall and rain and snow
Changing the optics does not change the quality of the photo (long-range and bokeh-shmoke, that’s the whole broth) that 18-55 that 50 1/4-the same picture is 90 percent (if I’ve misplaced me 50mm)
If the matrix is not steamed by the display and the viewfinder in which the sunshine is hard to see, then the bomb is stoned (14 megatons)
PS I often read and get indifferent from the fact that the quality of the photo in the PHOTO !!!!!! the camera is not so important, the more important is the video fullpool video and the video camera what is the quality of the photos taken on it to evaluate? (I knew a smart maiden that df waved at 5500 -there is a vidic and many, many modes of different cool and DF Kakya somehow old-fashioned and fraudulent found what to give)
When buying a camera, do not buy a camcorder by mistake

      • Ilya Alexandrovich

with canon 550 fifty kopecks. 35 mm Compared to 18-55, the image quality is the same. I am writing for those who believe that buying for example about. 35 1.4 -1.2 will receive masterpieces. there are no miracles until you master the photo technique. look at reviews. photo examples. see for yourself.

    • Onotole

And personally, for example, I scold everyone who scolds the allegedly bad skinton of the D5100 / D7000.

    • Jury

      normal there skinton

  • Ksenia

Thank you very much for the article! Tell me please. I shoot on D3100 18-55 and 50-200 mainly on the street. Now I want to shoot my son’s children's parties and the whale 18-55 does not make me happy. I chose two different lenses: Nikkor 35mm and Tamron 17-50mm. Fix never took off. There is no way to do both, so please help in choosing. Thanks in advance to all who responded!)

    • Valery A.

FR 17-50mm will be incomparably more convenient for matinees than 35mm fix. Speak with a fix, you never took it off, put it on the 18-55 FR 35mm and shoot only with it, you will learn the fix (I’m not talking about aperture). If you select an instance that exactly falls into focus when buying, I think you will be pleased with the tamron.

      • Ksenia

        Thank you very much!

    Hello.
I don’t know which Nikon to buy as the first.
New or used. Some advise starting with a used one. Do not spend a lot of money.
Nikon d3100 in the secondary market sell for 7-8K rubles. And the D3200 for 10K.
The new D3300 kit costs 23K. Or buy immediately 7100 kit for 62K? In the future, I think to use it for commercial purposes. And for this, the d3300 will not work, right?

    • Valery A.

Hello. For commerce, in general, a full frame is more suitable if it is not shooting in the TV range - less noisy under equal conditions, more artistic (with a suitable lens). For example, d600, 610 used. Or d7000 - 7100.

    • Koba

Do not buy 3000 series cameras if you plan to do commercial shooting in the future. They will often let you down and you are noticed, and for the house, 3100 and especially 3300 are suitable with a margin. The 7100 is good for commercial shooting, but personally I would recommend the same old FF D700, unless of course you need video. And so, a little more money and D610 ... Also for commercial shooting you will need to buy a pair of normal lenses, but the cheapest option will be D7100 + Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS and some other lenses, depending on the type of commercial shooting and budget.

  • Vladimir

    Hello!
my 3100 quite often misses with focus.
can you tell me the reasons for this miracle? mostly in fairly bright sunlight.
Perhaps someone came across such "glitches" ???

and so - the camera is excellent. I think to buy a high-aperture fix 28 or 35mm on Ali-Express. judging by the reviews, the Chinese began to make good lenses ...

    • Michael

If the misses are consistent, this is called back-front focus. The reason is that the lens is not aligned with the camera. Welcome to service.

    • B. R. P.

Maybe it's not in the camera?

  • love

Good afternoon, when I bought a used 3100 I was faced with the fact that it was full 0))) I take pictures of children indoors, but these are dances, and these dances are always underground, in the twilight all the time. I would like to capture the movement and not to get black as on a whale lens 18-55 ... I don't do it on it ... everything is black as night ... then you even start to highlight some noises ... and I also want to start shooting family and love stories on the street , so far not very expensive))) Amateurish, but so that it can get more *) I don’t want to shoot in the studio ... I want the focus to be good when people jump, etc. ... so that the blur is not bad ... advise which lens to take ... the dancing rooms are quite large. there is where to go, etc.) a couple of times a year we go on vacation, I like to take pictures there too ... and I still don't understand, for the life of me, about the fix ... he doesn't move at all? Or is it still how the whale on the mm-frames rotates and brings it closer? but not much?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Many questions. You need to know how to work with any camera and with any photo task. I bought a scalpel - the operations are not working. It's the same here.
For the vast majority of cases in the room, an external flash is needed. Reporting is difficult with a fix, for this a light station wagon of the type Nikon 17-55 / 2.8, Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS, Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC is better suited.
      If you try to shoot on a fix without a flash, then Nikon 35 / 1.8DX, Sigma 30 / 1.4, Sigma 30 / 1.4 Art.

    • Denis

nothing will help in the twilight, especially with the outdated d3100
and if you shoot a sport with a flash, you need a camera that supports fast synchronization

      • Arkady Shapoval

No, high-speed synchronization in the room does not play any role.

        • Denis

My daughter asked me to shoot her jumping on the bed, I took a picture :)
But how would I do it without quick synchronization?

          • Arkady Shapoval

easily, the shutter speed in such conditions is secondary, since “freezing objects” is done by the light from the flash, the length of which is several times slower than the fastest shutter speed. Those. the effect with a flash at 1/100 of the shutter will stop the movement of a person if the picture was taken at 1 / 1000s.
For example, a Nikon SB-910 external flash has a light pulse duration at 1/1 full power equal to 1/880 second. It is this time that the exposure of the scene will last, which depends on the reflected light. And if you set the flash power equal to 1/128 of the total flash power, then the pulse duration will be only 1 / 38.500 seconds.
High-speed synchronization is needed more in bright light, where you need to highlight or interrupt the main light.
            Details here.

          • Peter Sh.

I will add. Chinese flashes without the ability to quickly synchronize simply may not fire at the right time when shutter speeds are faster than 1/200.

  • Valery A.

Hello. Fix - from the word "fixed", in this case focal length. Set to 18-55 focal lengths. height 35 mm - you will find out what the standard fix 35 mm (and on a full frame 50 mm) is in terms of the angle of view. 2nd: indoor shooting a reportage without a flash - nothing, and the built-in does not help much, you need a camera, with the ability to puff into the ceiling, sometimes into the wall. Economy options (as well as light, small and easy to use) are like nikon sb 400, 300, also similar non-branded ones, like vitrox 610, described here. I advise you to start with such, when you outgrow - you will know what is next, 700 or 910. The lens is also desirable in a better quality in the sense of the picture, usually they begin to advise relatively inexpensive sigma or tamron 17-50 / 2,8, they and will be good for love stories. (I myself have a Tamron 28-75 / 2,8, I like it - sharp, the colors are bright, but indoors it is not very versatile - not a wide angle.)

    • Valentine

Viltrox 610 is not necessary (by the way, there is a review on this site). More or less working Chinese options: YN 568 / Triopo 568. To the ceiling - yes, if the distance to the object and to the ceiling are small. If the ceiling is high, and the distance to the object is large, then the ceiling is useless.

  • Bogdan

I own a D3100 camera, does it make sense to change it to a D7000 with a surcharge of $ 100?
In technical terms, will there be a gain?

    • KalekseyG

      Everything will be.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There will be a gain in everything.

  • Irina

I have a Nikon D3100, I tried a friend Sigma 17-50 mm lens for Nikon on my carcass, but the DSLR does not see it although I read reviews that they are perfectly compatible. What are the reasons and whether to try this lens again. The reason is a screwdriver, but then why does it work in others ... maybe it's used. Please help .. if it does not work, is there a replacement for my d3100 with a constant aperture of 2.8? thank you in advance!!!

    • Denis

I’m sitting, watching TV, picking a screwdriver in my ear, bam! The sound has disappeared from the TV, what should I do?

  • V.A.

Hello! I want to buy a used d3100 for training a beginner. Tell me if it's worth it. Of all the options considered, I think I found one worthy. I need professional advice, preferably from Arkady. And so the kit. Nik 18-200 lens, Mark 2 Di622 flash, tripod, and little things ... reflectors. Mileage 17500. It looks not very dusty, dirty, the last pictures on it were taken 4 years ago. lay gathering dust. but nothing seems to be loose, there are no traces of opening and rust. I fell for the lens of course and the flash. for everything they want 15000r.

    • Valery A.

So then, of course, a suitable set, for a beginner something, and inexpensively. I hope the beginner has strong hands, because the lens weighs more than half a kilo, he didn’t use one himself, Arkady praised him.

      • V.A.

thanks. strong hands. it just confuses the look. I hope to clean it from dust and dirt. will sparkle like new. But do you need a special brush to clean the matrix?

        • Jury

The camera is not shoes that can be brushed without effort to shine, entry-level cameras easily pass dust into the viewfinder, which cannot be cleaned

  • Ruslan

Good day! Have you noticed the characteristic overexposure of photographs under normal shooting conditions (no backlight or very bright contrasting objects). I also have a D3000, this has not been observed. I understand that they have different electronics, different types of matrices. A picture with the same settings (saturation, contrast) comes out better with the D3000 with a whale lens. I took a used D3100 with a minimum mileage (900), since on my D3000 the number of shutter releases is close to 40000, sometimes an external flash does not fire (I got a new one, the same thing). Or I just have such a defect of an autoexposure meter at D3100. I try to use manual settings, but still I wanted to know your opinion.

    • Vitaly N

Is the mirror or the focusing screen not dirty?

      • Ruslan

No, they are in excellent condition.

  • Alexander

I bought the D3100 from 18-105, the landscapes are unconvincing, although I went through all the modes. What is the best way to customize this camera for landscape?

    • Michael

What does it mean unconvincing? Maybe what you are waiting for is generally necessary from RAV

    • Onotole

To answer your question, you need to understand what specifically does not suit you. Or, if it is difficult to formulate unequivocally (it happens), then you need an example of what “did not work out” and an example of how it should have turned out in your opinion.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Use the settings of the Image Control Mode, Picture Control, fine-tuning its parameters, for example, adjusting the LS Landscape mode (do not confuse this mode with the shooting mode on the main command dial).

  • Alexander

Yes, indeed, Picture Control helped. Thank you for the tip.

  • Denis

Tell me, plz, kit 18-55 VR with Nikon D3100.
When photographing a landscape, I get a “soapy” picture like this:
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/JoZ8GdFKTUgvexAXA

From the DSLR, and even in the afternoon, I want more. We understand the instructions and set the sharp to 9.
    We get this:
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/j3PuB2K68HjPB46R6

All the same, the detail is “not that”, the grass is kind of “soapy”, I want more.

As a result, at your advice, I convert through the RAW converter and get such a picture.

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/uTv7NtnXAn9bN4Dm7

It seems to be "prettier" to the picture. But several questions at once:

Such manipulations are normal? Or is there something wrong with the whale lens initially?
I did not resharpen the photos in your opinion as a result?

    • Valentine

      1. "From a DSLR ...": it's not so much about the camera as about the lens. It is not very sharp, it sags especially at the edges.
      2. You did not specify the aperture, but from 18-55 the landscape is better to shoot from F8. Then you add more contrast and sharpness during post-processing. There is no need to overdo it. There are methods for good sharpening without the appearance of visible overshoot artifacts.
      3. “Such manipulations are normal?…”. An inexpensive way to improve the picture. If you want more, you'll have to fork out for better optics. Also, with experience comes a clear procedure for what to do with the image. Standard manipulations take less time (however, you start thinking about other nuances that you have not seen at all before and which can also take a lot of time).

    • Onotole

And what are the shooting parameters?

    • Onotole

I downloaded the original, looked, figured it out. Aperture 5.6, 1/250, ISO 100. Parameters - in principle, normal. And there is no sharpness - because the focus is not there, look carefully for yourself, the foliage in the lower right corner is quite sharp (well, as far as it allows, as you have correctly noted, perhaps one of the weirdest lenses for Nikon), and, as you move away from this plane inward - the sharpness decreases. It's just out of focus. I don't know if you know what depth of field is - if not, be sure to find out. On a soap dish, because of the small matrix, there is no such problem, everything that is further than a meter or two, everything is sharp. On DSLRs and any cameras with a larger matrix, this should always be kept in mind.

  • anonym

I have had such a device for over a year now, a good camera for a beginner. But the matrix ... It is simply impossible to set more than 200 ISO, a noticeable noise starts at 400 even during the day. The stretchiness of RAW files is also not happy, a lot of photos have to be pulled out due to noise alone.

  • anonym

    Great and informative article!

  • Alexander

I install any Soviet lens through an adapter and work in manual mode!

  • Tatyana

Tell the newbie, can I install a good 3100 on the Nikon D 85 or only these three lenses mentioned in the article? I understand the problem is that if I install something else there will be no autofocus?

    • Valery A.

Autofocusing on this camera is only possible with AF-S lenses, only these nikkors have a motor. All others (AF, MF, etc.) - only manually. In sigma lenses, Tamron must also have a focusing motor.

    • Onotole

I advise you Nikon 3100 / 85G lens for the D1.8.It is relatively inexpensive, and it gives a very beautiful picture, and autofocus will work, and this is a native lens (which means that it is excluded that it suddenly starts to work incorrectly and is much less likely that it will break itself in 5 years, which in turn means a relatively good investment, because the price will fall much more slowly over time)

      • zengarden

        > It's also relatively inexpensive *
        * in the secondary market :)

  • anonym

Hello! Will the old Soviet lenses fit the d3100? Which is better to take? There is a fix. 50. You need something the opposite) but not macro) thanks in advance !!!

    • B. R. P.

Best suited with the N mount (Nikon (F). Type Helios 81H, Kaleinar 5H, Mir 24N, etc.

  • Masha

I used the year d3100, does it make sense to change it to d5100 (with lenses 18-135 and 35) with an extra charge of 150 dollars? or save for 7100 or d600? I WANT TO GO FROM A LOVER TO A COMMERCIAL SHOOT (SPORT REPORTS)

    • anonym

Save up. No options to save.

  • Sergei

Does it make sense to change the D3100 to the D3400? Will there be a difference in the quality of the photo?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The difference will be, I do not see much point in replacing

  • Anatoly

I compare the photo with my d60 and yours with the d3100, the latter specifically loses and the desire to take it disappears, maybe the difference is in the matrices? Or does it just seem to me?

    • Novel

Or maybe the matter is in skill, processing and a little more lens?

    • Basil

Of course, the difference is because of the matrix. CCD matrix better color reproduction but more noise, CMOS universal. And you do not need to think that some is better, you need to understand what this or that matrix will fully manifest itself.

  • Dmitriy

I fell from the 8th floor: both intact and working. A good camera (not d300s, of course, not everything is at hand), but everything is at your fingertips. I would have known that it would be so cheaper - I would never have bought a new one. No smartphones and point-and-shoot cameras can compare with a dx kit (and a bzk in the same price range). And mirrorless cameras are definitely good at cheaper DSLRs. If, like Canon, a fix-pancake 24 2.8 on crop appeared, at least for yongnuo, I would have breathed a second life into the system. In general, if you understand at least a little about the camera settings according to the articles on this site, for each family for $ 100-150 the camera will serve a good service in the memory of the necessary moments. Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

  • Tatyana

Hello! Please tell me I want to buy a second-hand Nikon D 3100. The owner of this camera has not used it for about 2 years - could this somehow affect its performance or the quality of the photo? Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • Valery A.

Hello. Yes, in principle, nothing should rust there, the battery, except that the capacity can be lost. Check, of course, how he takes pictures, you yourself cannot - ask the seller to take pictures, incl. If you like it, take it. Examine the body of the camera and the lens - if it is heavily used, if there are any scratches, etc.

      • Tatyana

        thank you)

    • B. R. P.

Take a look also into the battery compartment - it should be clean there, without drips. And check if the charger works.
