Review of the Nikon D3100. View Nikon D3100 body

Nikon D3100 is a wonderful amateur DSLR camera. I am often asked what good and not expensive Nikon SLR camera I would recommend to buy - I almost always I recommend Nikon D3100. In this review you can find information only about Nikon D3100 Body - that is, only about the camera itself without a lens. Nikon D3100 usually comes with an inexpensive lens kit, such a kit is called a 'kit kit'. Nikon D3100 with lens Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6VR is the most common option. If the complexity of an SLR camera is scary - do not be afraid, a special explanatory GUIDE mode is built into the camera, which will tell and tell everything. If the whale lens is not satisfactory, then at the end of this review, I give some tips for choosing good and inexpensive lenses.

View of Nikon D3100 from different sides

View of Nikon D3100 from different sides

Nikon D3100 has excellent featureswhich are wired into a very light and small camera body. It has everything you need, from a 14.2 MP matrix, to the ability to shoot video in Full HD quality 1920 × 1080.

Key Features of Nikon D3100

1. The first thing to remember is that APS-C a camera in which, in comparison with the classic 3 mm film, the matrix is reduced. The matrix area of this baby is 5 times smaller than that of professional giants such as Nikon D800 or Nikon D3s. And at the same time, the area of the matrix (matrix value) same as for more advanced cameras Nikon D7100, D300s, D7000 и D5200... The matrix is the heart of a DSLR. The quality of photographs depends very much on its value. Therefore, picking up Nikon D3100, you can be sure that you can get photos from it no worse than on a very expensive professional Nikon D300s.

2. The Nikon D3100 sensor has crop factor in 1.5x. If you decide to use a cropped digital SLR camera, then you should understand that when using full-frame lenses, the viewing angle will be less than on Full Frame cameras. This is neither bad nor good. On the one hand, the TV range automatically increases, and on the other hand, the wide angle becomes a luxury. If you haven’t shot a film or a full frame before, then this remark about crop factor you can’t take it to heart.

3. Yes, the small Nikon D3100 has as many 14.2 Megapixels... This is really a lot, and if you megapixels are importantthen the Nikon D3100 will be just right. More megapixels, at the moment, only at Nikon D5100, D7000, D3x, D4, D800, D800E, D3200, D5200, D600, D610, D810, D4, D4s. If someone wants to be happy for the little Nikon D3100, then know that 14,2MP give 4608 x 3072 more pixels than expensive professional Nikon D3s, Nikon D3, Nikon D700, Nikon D300s etc. But, in fact, the number of megapixels does not affect the image so much. Their huge number is most likely just a marketing ploy. You can read my little note on the topic Battle of Megapixels.

4. ISO limits. Nikon D3100 can change its value ISO 100 to 12.800... Although, in fact, only from 100 to 3200, the values 6400 and 12800 are a kind of software cheat, even in the camera settings they are denoted by a tricky one - ISO HI1 and ISO HI2. I strongly advise against shooting at high ISO values. For comparison, Nikon D90, Nikon D300, Nikon D300s has an ISO 6400 ceiling.

5. Everyone is probably interested in the noise of the matrix. Understand correctly, any matrix will make noise at high ISO, even Nikon D4  with its ISO 204.800. There is only one question here - to what extent this or that noise level is acceptable for a person. With a camera for amateur shooting, it is quite possible to shoot at ISO up to 3200. Considering that this is an amateur camera, I have no complaints about the noise level at high ISO. Here sample photo without processing at high ISO, no noise reduction enabled, exported directly from RAW at ISO 3200 - View Example.

6. 3 frames per second. Speed is enough for many types of shooting. I recommend always thinking, but do you need more than 1 frame per second? Yes, there are sports photographers, wedding photography and many other commercial areas of photography, where speed plays an important role, but you should not demand a high rate of fire from an amateur camera. It is unlikely that anyone will be filming a serious report or wedding on the Nikon D3100. I have enough head speed of 2.5 frames per second on my favorite Nikon D40, and the same 3 frames per second on Nikon D80.

7. Autofocus. Focus system consists of 11 points. This is very good news for all Nikon D1 users. D1h, D1x, D100, D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70swho are planning to upgrade. Focusing with 11 points is very convenient. Focus points as many as cameras Nikon D90, D5000, D5100, D200, D80, D2hs, D2x, D2xs, D2h. Nikon Multi-CAM1000 is responsible for focusing. I had this focusing system on Nikon D90, there is no doubt about the quality of her work. You can read more about focusing systems on Nikon cameras here.

8. Display. 3-inch display, large, beautiful, contrasting, the same size as that of Nikon D5000, Nikon D5100. The only thing is that he has only 230.000 points displaying information. More advanced cameras have over 900,000 points.

9. Video. Yes, Nikon D3100 can shoot Full HD 1920 × 1080 video. I am not a specialist in video quality. A nice innovation is the factor that the D3100 has autofocus when shooting video. For example, Nikon D90, D3s, D5000 no auto focus when shooting movies. Autofocus turns on when you press the shutter button halfway, or is always on in AF-C... You can shoot at lower quality to save memory. The Live View button is combined with the start / stop button for video recording - it's very convenient. In video mode, aperture control is not available, to change the aperture values, you must first turn off Live View, set the desired aperture value, then turn Live View back on and start shooting.

10. The camera uses SD cards. You can also use the very capacious SDXC. My device digests well 32GB SD HC Class 10. This is an important parameter, the speed of the camera depends on the speed of the card. A regular RAW file weighs an average of 11-15 MB, 1 minute FULL HD video weighs an average of 150 MB. A photo in JPEG L weighs an average of 3 to 8 MB.

11. The camera has a nice menu. The menu is made in the classic Nikon style. Everything is clear and accessible.

Photo on Nikon D3100

Photo on Nikon D3100

12. The camera is very compact and light. Weight is very important for the average camera user. The weight of the camera is one of the smallest among all DSLRs at Nikon. Nikon D3100 is even lighter for Nikon D40. Weight is very important, for example, when take pictures on a hike. The battery also holds a charge well, and without a flash it works out about 1000 frames.

Nikon D3100 has many other useful things:

  • dust matrix cleaning system
  • fast processor expeed 2
  • auto adjustment distortions
  • airflow control system to prevent matrix contamination
  • Live View Focus Mode
  • many tips on the menu and during shooting
  • good built-in flash
  • excerpt from 30s to 1 / 4000s
  • outputs for connecting to a computer and TV, port for GPS
  • active D-lighting (which is either on or off).
  • Frame buffer puts 13 RAW files. Oddly enough, but the buffer is more than advanced Nikon D90, which has only 11 frames in the buffer for RAW. With this buffer, you can shoot continuously for more than 4 seconds in high-speed mode.

Disadvantages

This is an entry-level amateur Nikon digital SLR camera, therefore, it is not worth demanding anything more from it. But still, by the camera no focus motorthat will not allow the use of autofocus with cheap non-motor optics, for example, with the legendary Nikon 50mm F1.8D. At the camera no quick flash sync, minimum is 1 / 200s. Also, there is no flash control command mode, additional monochrome display. The camera does not know how to work with manual (old, without a microprocessor) type lenses AI-S. RAW files are available only with 12 bit color depth and with automatic compression. There is no rotary display and many other useful things.

Very often there is a choice of the first SLR camera among models Nikon D3000, D3100, D3200. Of course, everything new is always better than the old one, here is a comparative plate of the main parameters of these three cameras:

It can also be noted that the Nikon D3100 uses a pentaser mirror, a cheaper version of the pentaprism with 95% frame coverage. The camera does not support remote control, no bracketing and the camera has a new battery, not like in D3000That does not allow to combine batteries and chargers.

Personal impressions

The camera is very, very similar to its predecessors. The design looks a lot like Nikon D60, D3000. The only thing added a Live View button and a convenient switch of the shooting method. To the left of the camera there are cracks for microphone. The camera is really very light and small, almost the same as a baby Nikon D40. I recommend Nikon D3100 to anyone who wants an inexpensive DSLR with video function.

Important Note

If you choose your first DSLR, pay attention to the fact that the quality of photos depends very much on other parameters than on the camera. I wrote in more detail in my article - It is important how to take pictures, and not by what means. I note that I'm still shooting on the simplest Nikon D40.

At low ISO, the image itself depends little on the camera - the whole photo, its dynamics, color, tonal transitions, etc. very much depend on the lens and on camera shooting mode (saturated, portrait, etc.). Here sample image at ISO 3200 original resolution.

Recommendations

If there is free money, it would not be bad to buy a pretty fast lens, it could be Nikon 35mm F1.8 AF-S и Nikon 50mm AF-S F1.8, in order to unleash the potential of the camera. The whale lens that comes with the kit can be used as a good option to achieve a wide viewing angle. If you have a lens Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkorthen they can shoot anything. What if 18-200mm - then this is one of the best options for all occasions.

Also, you can configure the Fn programmable button on the camera, I configure it to choose ISO. Before photographing set the shooting mode correctlyfor example, setting VI (saturated) for sharp and vibrant photos.

The camera has a super trick. When working with optics in manual focusing mode, the Rangefinder function can be used. The function helps you focus through the optical viewfinder. I am a big fan of manual optics, such as Helios-81H, therefore, along with Live View, this is an indispensable thing for improving manual focusing. But, as it turned out, Rangefinder does not work with manual optics, so it upset me a lot.

conclusions

Nikon D3100 great camera for beginner photographers and for people who just need a good photo without unnecessary problems. Also, the camera shoots Full HD video with autofocus. Nikon D3100 is a compact, inexpensive and functional camera. It is enough to turn on the camera, remove the lens cap and press the shutter button and the sophisticated DSLR will do its job with a bang. Recommend.

Thank you all very much for the detailed explanation! Or maybe you can advise some old manual lens (24mm), so that on the crop it turns out 35mm + - because I mainly shoot landscapes, architecture. And I want to hold a little more than it fits on 50mm. I understand that on the go without autofocus it will be more difficult to shoot, but I want better quality than on my own 18-55. I would like to try a fast fix with good glass (picture quality), sharpness, color, to get 35mm on my crop and not expensive too)))))))

    • Michael

There are no such ones in nature (Old lenses for landscape are very stretched and I have doubts that they will be better than a whale, especially on a covered diaphragm. You can look at the fixes you are interested in on this site (manual AF AF-S notation, that is, AI, AI-S, preAI). It’s best to use Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24, or Samyang 14mm zooms for crop. These are the cheapest options.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        All right

    • Arkady Shapoval

Old shirikas on covered diaphragms do not go very far from 18-55. I would advise you to save up and take Tokinu 12-24 / 4 (with a motor, the second version). This lens will really help you. The rest is cheap, manual - so, just pamper.

      • Alexey

in vain are you so. as already noted, Zuiko 28 2.0 is great for archi and landscape. but, of course, there is a curvature of the field, like all old and light shiriks. (Zeiss distagon also has it), but in the center there is per-pixel sharpness. even at 5DSr.

        • Arkady Shapoval

But Zuiko 28 2.0 for OM will still need to be adapted for Nikon. Extra troubles, not everyone can do it. It's easier then to take the native 28 / 2.0 AI-S.

          • Pokemon

Nikkor 28 / 2.0 in good condition still needs to be looked for and their price is close to the price of 28 / 1.8g, which is optically better.

          • Alexey

you can buy a replaceable mount. there is leitax, there is Chinese. replacement takes 5 minutes at most. and with kenon, as always, it's easier - you just need an adapter.

      • Alexey

but the tokina you mentioned is good. I put it on kenon, I liked everything in terms of sharpness / resolution.

  • Victoria

Thanks so much for the answers. You helped me a lot. Narrowed the search circle, otherwise I was already confused) I'll see those that you advise! Thanks again!

  • Victor

Good day! Please advise what is better to take on the role of the first amateur DSLR for home: D3100 or D3200? I want to learn how to shoot, but in the first couples it would be nice to get frames in the “aim and shoot” mode. Thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, no difference, the d3200 is slightly better.

  • for

In principle, a good camera, I have one since 2013, I took it with me everywhere and everywhere, both abroad and throughout Russia, he went with me a lot. But last year, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, and it shoots no worse than the Nikon D3100, and some frames are even better! So, mobility prevailed here!

    • Ivan

Apparently, you are shooting so that there is no difference between the pictures.

    • Denis

You haven't seen photos from Yotafon yet. it has a large lens. photographs are similar to what is obtained on cameras (you can call sharpness per pixel, you can see if you shoot wool or feathers with them - that is, cats or birds). sorry, all the advantages are on the camera and end

  • Bogdan

Which camera to choose: Nikon D40 or Nikon D3100? Which camera will have better photo quality?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      D3100 definitely

      • Bogdan

        Thank you very much)

    • Valery A.

      Oops ... Hit your own?

      • Arkady Shapoval

        what?

        • Valery A.

          Meant your indifference to d40.

          • Arkady Shapoval

well, my indifference should not concern other users

    • Charles

      For photography - D40, for video and “a little photo” - D3100.

      • Arkady Shapoval

no, definitely newcomers to d3100 without options

        • Bogdan

Is Nikon d3100 inferior to d40 in the quality of photographs?

          • Arkady Shapoval

            not inferior, but significantly superior

  • Victoria

Hello everyone. At the time of writing, it was not possible to shoot remotely on the D3100, now there is a bunch of wired remotes and controllers with wireless transmitters. Question: Who dealt with this, advise which one to take?

P.S. Sorry for my Russian, I'm from Ukraine.

  • Dmitriy

Hello. Such situation. The child takes a lot of pictures on the phone, but the quality is not satisfied. I decided to add to the high and offered to take a used DSLR, explained what it is, that it was not just pressing a button, that you need patience and study, but the interest did not seem to have disappeared. And now the question of choice arose. Once upon a time, I also dreamed of a DSLR, I read a lot, chose, compared, and then I liked Nikon more, at the same time my acquaintances bought a Canon 400d and somehow I was not impressed by their pictures (maybe they did something wrong). But due to the birth of a child, I financially did not pull the DSLR, in the end I took a simple soap dish with zoom and the possibility of manual settings. But the limitations and convenience of setting the soap dish somehow discouraged the craving for artistic photography, and the flash began to junk, eventually dismantled it to fix it, but so it was sent to the trash. The daughter also seems to say he wants Nikon. Without understanding the cameras, what year is the model, what characteristics, what is how much, what is compatible, it was very difficult to choose something on the used market, and in the end I settled on Nikon D3100. But in this article I subtracted that this model does not have a focusing motor. I think that if the child is immediately given a camera on manual settings, then this will quickly discourage the desire to take pictures, I would like to gradually introduce them to the course, but since I myself will also have to study, the course will probably be delayed. And everything attached to Nikon is somehow more expensive. In short, what else can you see? Wishlist such, for the beginning of the photo in auto mode and where settings are more convenient, SD memory card (microSD). If in a month or two the camera is not smashed against the asphalt or against the wall and the interest does not disappear, then the opportunity to buy an extra is not expensive. lens, I think at this stage for the child, autofocus will not be superfluous. In our second-hand market, D3100 can be taken for 5000 rubles, this is the maximum amount for the experiment “like it or not”. For this money, models following the d3100 are already more expensive. From Canon, the oldest in this money is like the 1100D. Tell me what other models to see, maybe you have any ideas about a DSLR for a child and how to tear children away from the camera in the phone, and the phone itself (a child of 13 years old).
Special thanks to Arkady for this site is very helpful in the study of photographic equipment.

    • BB

Better (more versatile), of course, will be the Nikon D3100 + 18-105 kit, more artistic - the 50 / 1,8 or 35/2 lens

    • Alexey

sometimes I teach children to shoot. I give them either a 5D MkII or something of the "ones" with normal optics. our children learn quickly, they like everything, there are no problems. the choice of canon or nikon or sony or something else is almost religious)) if there is no experience in this, then it is better to buy a camera of the company that a friend has, who at least understands something about this - he will be able to both prompt and give drive optics. everything will be easier.
I know that the author of the site prefers Nikon, but I will say that, in my opinion, the engineer who disassembled and shot almost all existing cameras, the younger Nikon 3xxx and 5xxx series are very mediocre in everything, from picture quality and AF to ergonomics. in addition, again in line with the small budget, Nikon does not allow you to install a large number of old high-quality lenses with manual focus, while almost everything can be installed on the canon.
In principle, cameras of different systems differ not only in image quality and reliability, but also in ergonomics. and it is very difficult to say a priori which ergonomics of which company is more suitable for a particular person - just take and try, shoot, a lot, for a long time and in different conditions.
traditionally, for beginners with no budget, I recommend the canon, partly because ergonomics, in my opinion, are more convenient, partly because you can install old Soviet lenses for, as they say, a penny. and to have, with straight arms, where without them, a very good picture.
but. Without a mentor nearby, well versed in equipment, helping a child deal with a camera can be difficult. for, as was rightly said, the SLR is not about pointing and clicking, but a little more complicated))

      • Dmitriy

I’m already leaning towards Canon because of its versatility. What do you recommend as an alternative to the Canon D3100 in the same price range? Does Canon have a focus motor everywhere?

        • Alexey

in kenon optics, the focusing motor is always in the lens. so there is no problem. and what to choose - the usual list in ascending order of quality and convenience - 550 \ 600 \ 650 \ 60 \ 7, and 1100 is very primitive. yes, you can shoot on it, yes, you can blame me for snobbery)) but! I believed and still believe that you need to start with a relatively normal camera. just because it's MORE CONVENIENT. even beginners.

          • Dmitriy

Something I seem to be confused. The autofocus motor in the body of the camera, as I understand it, implies the presence of a so-called screwdriver? That is, this article states that the d3100 does not have a “screwdriver” autofocus motor, it turns out that if you install cheap lenses on it without a built-in motor but with a screwdriver connector, then autofocus will not work? And you say that in all canon lenses there is a motor in the body of the lens, that is, they are all cameras themselves without a “screwdriver”? What then lenses without a motor but with a "screwdriver" and cameras with a motor "screwdriver" are we talking about? Or did I get it all wrong?

            • Arkady Shapoval

For Canon, you can’t talk about a screwdriver in principle, there is a different approach. A screwdriver (a focus motor integrated in the camera) is not used for Canon and has no logical meaning.
Screwdriver only for Nikon, Pentax and Sony A / Minolta A

    • Alexey

“I think if a child is immediately given a camera on manual settings, it will quickly discourage the desire to take pictures,” however strange it may sound, but the children whom I taught were happy to shoot with manual focus optics, flowers, cats and girlfriends. and it was clear that they liked the PROCESS as well as the result.
in general, as always, everything is very individual.

    • Dmitriy

I also forgot the Live View function from Wishlist.

      • Alexey

LV is in all relatively modern kenon cameras. without this, shooting on manual optics would be very difficult.

      • Alexey

and one more thing - you need to forget about microSD as a nightmare - only SD. because contact problems in the adapter can (and appear) at an arbitrary point in time.

    • B. R. P.

By the way, the fact that the Nikon D3100 does not have a motor does not mean that there is no autofocus. You just need a lens with a motor, for example, the most trivial "kit" 18-55, which can be taken in the kit with a scammer very inexpensively. Live View is also present.

    • ba3lur

I agree that Canon has fat pluses in the coincidence of the focal length with Soviet lenses on the M42 and the absence of a screwdriver ... otherwise Nikon is ahead of the dynamic range even to compare equivalent models on Canon, even on the first dimes miserable 9 focus points with the 1st central one on Canon there is no backlight when focusing, Nikon has one standard mount for many years, Canon has several of them (if you put a crop glass on a full, you will break a mirror!) and the most haemorrhagic thing is to watch the run on Nikon, this is a matter of 2 minutes, but Canon is a separate song ... sad ...

      • Novel

Mmmm ... "Dynamic range" is some strange indicator that everyone prays for, but I've never seen the greenery taken on a cloudy day on the railway or the hair of cats in the basement somehow suffering from a lack of DD.
The number of focus points is accepted. Autofocus illumination - in a sense too, but if I have to shoot in those conditions where illumination is really needed, I'll put on some kind of puff or a synchronizer with a grid - they are more useless than a light bulb, and a photo without additional light will be terrible.
About “one bayonet standard” - well, very funny. There is only one bayonet, but the number of lens options for it is more than a dozen - and what will grow together with what is not at all clear without googling. There is a screwdriver, there are ears, then they decided to remove the screwdriver, then they decided to add it, but this fotik does not work with this glass, but the next fotik is already working. Canon DSLRs are very simple - EF will be everywhere, every lens released in 35 years on every camera. EF-S crop only. Moreover, this limitation is only for native cropped lenses, they will not physically become full frame. And cropped lenses from other manufacturers will be, but with a wild vignette, while no one will catch the mirror. I don’t know where you got this information.

      • Pokemon

The presence of a screwdriver is not a minus of Nikon, but a very plus, because even ancient screwdriver lenses (including third-party manufacturers) in 99% of cases focus correctly.
        *
The mileage on many Canon is determined correctly, and where it is not determined, it can be determined in the service.
        *
DD is important, but it's even better when a wide DD is combined with a good color profile. Like Fuji S5Pro. Narrow DD places more demands on the skill / experience of the photographer.
And after about 13EV, it doesn't bother you anymore. Canon has tightened up its matrices and since the 4th Pyatak and 1DXmk2 there have been fewer complaints.
Modern cameras have become much friendlier to their owners than 10 years ago, but none of the manufacturers have inserted the masterpiece button into the camera.

Only a screwdriver is not on every lens, and not mirrorless cameras could not (did not want to) carry it, therefore all screwdriver glasses can be used on a somewhat limited number of cameras and their prospects are vague. All features are interesting in dynamics, investments in photographic equipment are investments for ten to twenty years. Therefore, investments in the system are interesting. Buying one camera for one lens ... well, there are amateurs of such forms, but in general, of course, not that.

Of good! With the same lenses (18-55 and 18-105), which device is better to buy d80 or d3100?

    • KalekseyG

Take the one that is more alive, whole. In general, 80.

    • BB

The D80 is higher level, has a “screwdriver” for non-motorized lenses. Has a CCD matrix (the color reproduction of which many people like better, but the matrix is much noisier than CMOS)
D3100 is newer by about two degrees, has a CMOS-matrix, which is less noisy at high ISO.
If this is your first device, and you do not plan to use non-motorized lenses, then the rest of the D3100 will be more versatile.

  • Fotolox

The review of this camera (D3100) was very successful, we got it in the winter season, it was just created to shoot WINTER !!! Mood color - BLUE !!!)))))

Good afternoon. A question to specialists. Nikon d 3100 is offered with a Helios 81 N. lens on the ring with the letter "M" - manual. When you press the shutter, the viewfinder closes and does not open until you release the button. It seems that the shutter speed is set in manual mode. But the photos are obtained according to the parameters set by the aperture and shutter speed. I tried to hold the button in sunny weather for 2-3 seconds. The viewfinder was closed, but there was no exposure, that is, the photo is excellent. Should it be so or not?. The seller says. That it should be. But I am tormented by vague doubts. Tell me who is right? Thanks in advance.

    • turantino

Yes, that is right. And not only with Helios. Now standing on the camera MIR-24N - "M" on the mode selector, I set the shutter speed with my hands, for example 1/100 sec. I press the descent and do not let go. The viewfinder is closed. I let go of the button - all the rules ... the photo is obtained with preset parameters - exposure 1/100 sec, the aperture is closed by hand to the desired value. No overexposure.

Good day. I have been using this camera for a long time. I photographed with a whale lens (18-55), well, and a couple of Soviet ones are available. Tk, the theme of animalism is very close to me. Then, I would like to choose a lens for these purposes. Maybe someone will advise something) I would be grateful. Well, maybe a photo is just a hobby for me, not a professional occupation, I would like a lens not at the price of an “airplane wing”) Thank you in advance.

I bought myself TelearN 200 / 3,5 for birds on Avito for 4tyr, winter spring is excellent, especially at the feeders, mainly from 6-8 meters. for the summer sigma 135-400 for 6,5tyr soap of course, but 400mm. Manual focusing on the green point. Also TelearN och takes the Moon well, it is excellent to shoot distant thunderstorms

  • Alex

I bought this camera in 20 with low mileage as a third spare. I am a professional photographer. I shoot only commerce. And I will say that in the hands of a professional this is a decent camera for a minimum price. Yes, there is no additional display ... but you can live with it ... from this camera you can (with skill) - squeeze out a very good result!

    • Ivan

I agree. What I saw I liked more cham with d90. I have not yet made a complete opinion, but it became interesting.

  • Eugene

Good day! Please tell me, I bought the D3100 already included a lens, as I understand it is standard. I'm starting now to study professional photo, tell me which one to take extra. lens and flash. thank you in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Where you study, you should be prompted, this is their direct responsibility. To begin with, your standard (kit lens) will be enough and now it is too early to buy anything. But if you really want to, then a good addition to it will be Nikon 50 / 1.8G or Nikon 35 / 1.8G. And the Nikon SB-700 is a balanced flash solution.

      • Eugene

        thank you

    • Trueash

      >> which one to take extra. lens - One that “knows how” to do what the capabilities of a kit lens are not enough for. But I agree with Arkady, 35 and / or 50 will never hurt.

      • Charles

        I will support.
35 or 50mm lens should be for every IMHO.

  • Alexey

this camera has a disgusting display. to see it in focus is unrealistic. once gave his manual optics to a girl with such a camera. so we could not understand whether there is focus on the picture or not. as it is impossible in LV to focus accurately. well, the impossibility of full-fledged work with manual optics is also a minus and a big one. I got tired of it and, in the end, gave that girl D300s, everything became much more convenient)) she shot everything she wanted and with pleasure.

  • Novel

I have been using the camera for 8 years. But I still don't know how to properly shoot video in terms of focusing mode. In Auto mode, AF-F and AF-S focusing modes are available. In the first case, the camera will focus again with each change of objects in the frame. I am not satisfied with the hum of the motor and the fact that the focus is constantly changing, sometimes negative or positive. Then everything needs to be cut. The half-pressed shutter button, as I understand it, locks autofocus. In the second case, when the camera or objects are moving, they may fall out of focus. I even tried to shoot without autofocus, adjusting the focus manually with the focusing ring, setting the M mode on the 18-105 lens, but there were mistakes when shooting distant objects. When I was choosing this camera, I read that this is the first amateur camera with autofocus. But I imagined it a little differently)). I would be glad to any advice.

  • igor

thanks for the interesting review ... I am an amateur .. I have been using Panasonic Lumix for a long time .. but it is morally outdated .. so I ordered a Nikon 5200 ... I want to know something from the professionals about this device .. I have already read something of course .. but I want to know about replaceable optics .. mostly portrait landscape and still lifes shoot

    • Trueash

Interchangeable optics - a carriage and a small cart. If you need autofocus, then you need to take lenses with a motor, everything else will be in manual mode. For landscapes and still lifes this is not a minus, for portraits it is also not particularly if the model does not dance tarantella :) You can pick up a bucket of old inexpensive manual glasses "with character" and create as much as you like.

  • Michael

Envious of how my wife uses the Canon 600D in conjunction with a computer (all the control of the device is through the Canon software), I took care to work in the same way with Nikon. And I discovered one sad moment ... There is a corresponding softphone - Nikon Camera Control (the quality of which, to be honest, is the same) - and if it works fine with my Nikon 5100, then with 3100 - well, in no way ... And this moment for me, let's say, very upset ... Maybe I don’t know something yet? Maybe someone who is experienced in this matter will advise an alternative?

    • Alexey

      Look at the digiCamControl program
      http://digicamcontrol.com/

      • Michael

Thanks, I'll have to try. Although - as I understand it - the 3100 does not provide an opportunity to use LiveView ... This means there are hardware limitations.

        • Alexey

Yes, LiveView does not work for D3100 for some reason in remote mode.

        • Ivan

What's so surprising? On the website of this software, the table shows the models and supported functions:
