Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D review

The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D is considered a classic portrait lens, but it can be used for a wide variety of other photographic applications. Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D (we will call it Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D for short) was introduced in March 1994 and became a replacement for the older version - Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 (no letter 'D', NON-D type).

In total, Nikon has 6 such lenses:

All these lenses deserve due attention and have their own characteristic features.

Nikkor AF 85mm f / 1.8 D

Nikkor AF 85mm f / 1.8 D

The lens has a short but informative name: Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D, where 'AF' indicates that the lens is autofocus, but autofocus only works when available focus motor in the camera itself, '85mm ' indicate the focal length, 'F / 1.8 ′ to the maximum aperture... Bukovka 'D'indicates that the lens transmits the focusing distance to the camera, which is very important when working with flashes.

The first thing you pay attention to when you pick up the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D is its excellent build. Also, I was impressed by the special beauty of the front lens.

Highlights to watch out for

  1. This the lens can be used on full-frame Nikon FX cameras. It will work great on both Nikon film cameras and Nikon FX full-frame digital cameras.
  2. Auto focus with Nikon 85mm f / 1.8D lens available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing. An exact and complete list of Nikon CZKs that support auto focus with 'AF' lenses (such as this one) can be found in the 'Auto focus on Nikon cameras'.
  3. Maximum relative aperture F / 1.8. This is very important aperture. The difference between F / 1.4 and F / 1.8 is 2/3 stops.
  4. The focal length of the lens is 85mm, a classic focal length for portraits. On Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 127,5 mmwhich is also good for portraiture.
  5. When focusing, the front lens is completely stationary- it does not spin and does not ride back and forth. When focusing, only the rear lens unit moves, this is called the Rear Focusing System. With this lens it will be possible to use various filters without problems.
  6. The lens has manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 16 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 1.8, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16 are plotted on it; set the intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the ring aperture impossible. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.
  7. Complete with lens there is a metal hood, which really helps in the fight against flare and glare. The lens hood is screwed into the filter. I use protective filter, screwed onto the lens, and a hood is screwed into the filter, with such a bundle I do not install a protective cap.
  8. Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D has a window with a focus distance scale in meters and feet, a depth of field scale for F / 16, F / 11 and a mark for working in the infrared spectrum.
Nikkor AF 85mm f / 1.8 D

Rear view of Nikkor AF 85mm f / 1.8 D

Bad sides:

  1. The lens is very pronounced chromatic aberration on open diaphragms. HA in the field of sharpness disappear only from the aperture F / 4.0. Therefore, if you need a well-designed sharp image without any kind of ghosting on contrasting details in the field of sharpness, the lens will not be able to provide the desired result at values from F / 1.8 to F / 4.0. Personally, I put up with aberrations in portraiture, especially when there are few contrasting details.
  2. The lens does not have a focus motor, as mentioned above. But still you need to consider that it was designed back in 1994, and then no one thought that Nikon would release a couple of non-powered cropped cameras. You can read more about the focusing motor. here.
  3. The biggest drawback of this lens I personally consider the factor that he has a very strong competitor in the face Nikon 85mm f / 1.4 AF-D и Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor. In any case, F / 1.8 will lose in luminosity and in figure F / 1.4. At Nikon 85mm f / 1.4 AF-D HA disappear already at F / 2.0, while Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D HA disappear only on F / 4.0. And buying a Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f / 1.8D will always resent the fact that there is a much better portrait lens. On the Internet you can find millions of dedicated pages. battles Nikon 85mm f / 1.8D and Nikon 85mm f / 1.4 AF-D, and 1.8D wins only at its price. If your camera does not have a focus motor, then a cheap version of such a lens is present only in the face Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor and very expensive Nikon 85mm F1.4G AF-S.

Lens focusing speed F / 1.4dCompared to the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D, exactly the same. I conducted an experiment: put two cameras side by side, on the first F / 1.4d, on the second F / 1.8D, when you press the focus button, both lenses focus equally quickly from MDF to infinity and vice versa. Most likely, all three lenses are F / 1.8 AF, F / 1.8D, F / 1.4d have the same focusing speed, which may differ slightly from the camera on which the lens is used. Also, the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D has a faster focusing speed compared to F / 1.8g и с F / 1.4GN

Image quality

At the lens no distortion - this means that the lens ideal for photographing portraits, it does not distort the picture, but also the faces of people. On FX cameras, vignetting disappears only at F / 5.6. Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D sharp from 1.8. The best sharpness falls on apertures from F / 4.0 to F / 8.0, if you close the aperture above F / 8.0, you can only increase the depth of field, since diffraction takes effect.

The lens gives a slightly cool tint. The lens is not very friendly with back and side light. And, for a portrait lens, bokeh is very important, Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D bokeh is normal, sometimes rough. I would like better bokeh quality from a portrait lens. The lens has 9 aperture blades (the number of petals is above average), which allows him to give fairly rounded circles in the blur zone.

My experience

I really love this lens - it is compact, well built, fast focusing and sharp. Of course, due to the lack of modern technologies in it, the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D is morally outdated, and its updated model Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM almost everything is better. I recommend the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D to anyone looking for a real portrait lens for little money. The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D is the most budget-friendly model of the 'real native tailor'. With this lens, the resulting frames will be much more interesting than with standard fifty dollars.

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm F1.8D is an old but good portrait lens. A new version Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8G IF SWM, which became a replacement for the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D, is generally better than this old man.

Update: there was a review of an inexpensive alternative to this lens in the face YONGNUO 100 / 2.

Arkady, thanks for the excellent review and help in choosing the first portrait lens! Today I became the owner of this wonderful glass and I can confirm all the advantages indicated in this review. The lens gives an excellent picture, volume and excellent sharpness already at 1.8, this is the rare case when the quality of the issued photos exceeded all expectations!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Happy for you.

  • Ivan

I had the opportunity to shoot with this lens. Used it on the Nikon D3100, so it focused manually. Catching the trick was easy. I shot reports and portraits of speakers, so I didn’t open the aperture for more than 3,2. It was not difficult to catch sharpness on such a diaphragm. The photos were excellent.
I liked the lens in terms of ergonomics. Compared to Soviet glasses, it is very light. The hand never got tired. Paired with Tamron 2,8 17-55 shot a good report.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Hello Arkady!

I would like to know your opinion, I have a D5100 camera, I want to buy a good portrait portrait for it within 4000-4500 gr., I look towards the nikkor 85mm f / 1.8g af-s, do you think this is the best option or can I take something more interesting?

    Thank you in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

For the money it is the best option, I recommend the 85mm f / 1.8g af-s.

      • Yaroslav

        Thank you!

  • Roman

Thanks for the good review, Arkady, I rely on reviews on the Internet before buying a lens and now I got stuck between two models nikon 85mm 1.8d and samyang 85mm 1.4 chip nikon. Here, samyang costs about 1200 UAH cheaper than nikon, but it does not have autofocus, but it has more aperture and according to reviews it is a little sharper. I think for autofocus for the difference in price to take 50mm 1.8d. As I understand it, you shoot a lot on manual equipment. The goal - most of the time is to shoot portraits, most of all slowly. Do you think it takes a lot of time to get your hand in order to focus correctly and quickly? Or is it better to stop at Nikon? I will use it on nikon d7000.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not difficult. A day of filming is enough. If you use Live View, then you can learn in 5 minutes. I advise you to take the samyang 85mm 1.4 without a chip, since the reviews say the chip does not always work correctly, especially since your D7000 camera will make great friends with a manual lens.

      • Jury

Samyang 85mm 1.4 without a chip can only be found under the T-mount bayonet mount, in which case you need to use an adapter.

        • Arkady Shapoval

You can find it under native mounts, these are new lenses and they are immediately released under mounts.

          • Jury

For Nikon, I only saw samyang with chips on sale. Samyang 85mm 1.4 or 35mm 1.4 interested me the most, I also got d7000. Now I’m worried about which FR to choose .. 85x1.5 = 127.5mm will turn out, and 35x1.5 = 52.5mm fr.

        • Igor

          +1 on sale only chipovany!
And what is the problem with chipovany?

          • Arkady Shapoval

The chip does not always work correctly, I have not tried it myself, there are a lot of rumors.

  • Max

Hello, what about the old Nikon 85mm f / 2 manual?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I have not used, I will not prompt.

  • Igor

Hello, I'm facing a choice of nikon 85mm 1.8 (G or D) or samyang 85mm f / 1.4 - what would you advise to take? On the one hand, Samyang is devesle, but I am confused by the reviews about its not beautiful bokeh. I don't want to regret it later. Carcass - D7000.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I hope you understand that the samyang 85mm f / 1.4 does not have auto focus. Of this trio, I recommend nikon 85mm 1.8G

      • Igor

Why not 1.8D? It's kind of cheaper and fits my carcass

        • Arkady Shapoval

The G version is better than the D, but if the D version suits you, then you can use the D from this review.

          • Igor

What about the fact that the G version has only 7 petals and China? As far as I understand, you personally have 1.8D - what disadvantages do you see in it against G?
Soap only confuses me in D (

I look at the nameplate, but there are dry facts, and your subjective opinion G vs D is more interesting

          • Arkady Shapoval

The facts speak volumes. As for the subjective opinion, everything is very simple, I did not use 1.8G, there is no opinion.

  • gene

please answer, do you have any information about Nikon 85 mm 1.8 (not d)?

G or D ... If there is no review yet, I will ask anyway, maybe someone used it or you, Arkady, heard something about him from other people. The crux of the matter is this: 1.4 costs twice as much and is cut off immediately for this reason. The difference between 1.8D and 1.8G is 300… 500 UAH. This is permissible for me. So here:
    - is G much better than its predecessor and in what way?
    - is slow focusing so critical compared to the screwdriver D?
    - D sends the focusing distance to the camera, how much will I lose by choosing G?
    - is the resolution of one or the other enough for my 24 megapixel (D600)?

    Thank you all in advance)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      - G is better, is it much - it's hard to say.
      - focusing at 1.8G is not slow
      - G also conveys the value of the distance, don't get confused, here I described in detail the difference between the lenses - https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/03/nikon-lenses/
      - enough

Good afternoon! I want to ask you one question ... I have a D7000 + 50 mm 1,4d photographing weddings, there is an opportunity to buy an 85 mm 1,8D as a friend sells. Question: Is it worth buying 85 if there is 50, especially since a cropped matrix and how appropriate is it?

  • Tatyana

If not focusing? is everything broken?
Tell me what settings should be in order to focus yourself. Thank you in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Which camera do you use it on?

      • Tatyana

        On Nikon D90

        • Jury

Perhaps you Tatiana attached the lens to the camera incorrectly. It seems that before putting this lens on the camera, you need to set the aperture on it at f16 and then hook the camera (such a feature). In auto mode, he must focus himself. And if on the lens itself there is a switch in the “M” mode, then auto focusing will not be.

  • DMITRY

And he does not have a replaceable shank?

  • Alexander

    Hello. Thanks for the review.
Question: Is this lens suitable for portraits for the Nikon d50? because this camera is correct. Or would you recommend something else to her?
    Thank you.

  • Alexander

Sorry ... The camera is cropped.

  • Alexander

Good afternoon, I return to question D7000, there is a choice of portraiture:
    1) AF-S NIKKOR 85 mm f / 1,8G or AF-S Nikkor 50 mm F / 1.4 G
    2) Advise puff 700 or 900

    • Victor

Poltos is a conditional portraiture. In addition, 1.4 Ms has slow autofocus.
At the expense of puff: of the two, it’s absolutely all the same. Both are perfect.

  • Ruslan

    I have 50mm F / 1.8D AF, should I buy Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm F / 1.8D in addition? How much do I win with this?

    • Victor

Lose money and the place will be occupied by an extra glass. In addition, changing lenses is another problem. And drag the dust onto the matrix. Then give clean. Expensive.

Is that all I need? If you do not know why you need a fix, then you do not need it at all.

  • Ruslan

I read in one of the reviews that on the Nikkor 85 / 1.8G the picture is sharper and easier to get into focus? Is it so? Nikon D7000 Camera

  • Dmitriy

    Arkady, hello!

I recently bought 50mm 1.8d and the following problem was revealed:

when focusing on f1.8, it hits exactly the target, but as the aperture closes, the focus goes into the back.

f 5 already has a solid back focus. focus on the eye, focus on the ears.

on f1.8 hits the mark perfectly.

    I don’t understand why so?

  • Sasha

Please tell me, Arkady, is there any point in switching from 50mm1.4G to 85mm1.8G, will I win as a picture (portrait beauty)?
And if you choose 85mm which is better from the G or D version in terms of focus speed and optical quality? Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it makes sense. A completely different effect will be, especially for portraits. Better 1.8G.

        Thank you very much

      Hello to all.
At one time, choosing between 50 / 1.4 and 85 / 1.8, I stopped at 50 / 1.4, the main factor when choosing was the focal length (I shoot on the “d7000” crop, I was afraid that it would be missing in the room ..).
Three days ago I took the “Nikon 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor”. I chose from three pieces: the back / front was held by all three, the sharpness of only one in the upper right corner was a little soapy. What frightened at first was that at 1.8, on the target, the top of the black lines was bluish and the bottom was purple. At 2.2 the effect disappeared, at 2.8-3.2 it was awesomely sharp.
I read, Arkady, your review, write that aberration is normal for open .., and decided to take it.
Happy as an elephant. You can't compare with 50 / 1.4. These are two different glasses for different tasks !!! It is necessary to get used to the stirring a little, after all, the "130-cropped" are forced to equal their breathing and press their elbows. And here it is happiness !!!!!
If you already have 18-50, 24-70, 18-100 in your wardrobe trunk ... and you need a portrait lens, don't waste your time and take 85.
Arkady, thanks for the help in the reviews.

      • Denis

I forgot to add .. The focusing speed compared to 50 / 1.4 is just lightning fast.
And it looks like an adult.
