Review of World-1B

Lens Instance Mir-1V 2.8 / 37 from this review was released in 1985 on Vologda plant. Unlike some of his brothers, the lens has yellow lens enlightenment.

Dimensions of the Mir-1V and Helios-81N lens

Dimensions of the Mir-1V and Helios-81N lens

The first thing that surprises is that the lens is very small and compact, there are three control rings on the lens, therefore it looks rather strange. The focusing ring has a pronounced similarity to the nut due to the clear edges.

In 1958, Mir-1 (under M39) received the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Brussels, and in 1959 Mir-1 was awarded the II Degree Diploma of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR. Honestly, I don't know how prestigious it is, but nowadays lenses do not have the same quality as receiving awards. Some charm has been lost, and it is very pleasant to use the lens that has the “Name”. The lens was copied from Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm F2.8, they say that there was even an FK (Flektogon Krasnogorsky) F2,8 37 mm lens, which later, in fact, became the MIR-1 lens.

Modifications:

You can find a lot of lens modifications, for example such a. They have the same optical design, but different frames and enlightenment. Basically, you can often find such instances:

World 1 thread M39 or M42 for SLR cameras.
World-1 Automatic under the SLR cameras Kiev-10, -15.
Mir-1Ts for SLR cameras Zenit-4.
Mir-1A with interchangeable shank. Using an interchangeable shank, you can hook the lens without losing infinity to Nikon or Kenon.
Mir-1V - lens variant from this review. Yellow enlightenment and a slightly different frame.
Mir-1Sh special budget option.
Mir-1-R special budget option, it’s very well written about them on the website of Sergey Elizarov in the section MIR-1.

Advantages:

  1. Like any other old Soviet lens - Mir-1B is made glass and metal, because he will serve for a very long time, but with careful handling - forever. And it’s simple, working with a well-assembled lens is much more pleasant than with cheap Chinese plastic. Now it’s very fashionable to write in the lens reviews that the lens has a metal mount. But in the old Soviet and indeed in the old manual lenses of all countries of the world - the entire body is made of metal alloy, in the extreme case it has several plastic parts.
  2. I repeat, but Mir-1V is perfect and full frame and cropped cameras and other, smaller formats. This is important because many Soviet optics enthusiasts use it on cropped digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, and after upgrading to full format, they can continue to use this lens.
  3. The lens has aperture preset ring. An irreplaceable thing for manual lenses. Pointed at aperture 2.8, and at the time of shooting, closed the aperture to the desired value. But there is one but described in the flaws.
  4. When used on Nikon DX cameras, the viewing angle will be equal to the viewing angle for the lens in 55.5mm in full frame. That is, the lens almost turns into a standard fifty dollars on the crop.
  5. Gives an interesting picture.
Bokeh is not MIR-1 V

Bokeh is not MIR-1 V

Disadvantages:

  1. Very not convenient focus ring. The ring is located near the lens mount to the camera. Also, the focus distance indicators are very poorly visible, as they are located even closer to the focus ring. And even worse, the aperture control ring is much larger and wider and is located almost in the middle of the lens. Personally, I often, instead of twisting the focus ring, twisted the aperture ring.
  2. Easy travel of the diaphragm ring. Since the focusing ring is rather inconvenient, you often touch the aperture ring and knock it down. Do not knock down the aperture preview ring only at 2.8 when the control ring and the preview ring are in the same position. Therefore, most of the photos from this review were taken precisely at 2.8.
  3. Custom front filter diameter of 49mm. All Soviet lensesthat went through my hands with a front filter diameter of 49mm were without a front cover or filter. This is a real flaw in our time. True, the lens comes in a stylish box where it can be stored without a back and front cover.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

About the picture:

It is rather difficult for me to judge, since the lens with my adapter works only at a distance of up to 50 cm, but still, I will draw a few conclusions. The lens really cuttingbut the picture has gentleness, which is quite a big rarity. The color rendition is neutral, the contrast of the lens is not very good. Due to the low contrast and not very saturated picture, photos turn out a bit similar to photos with monocle. Contrast and color can very easily be adjusted using a graphical editor, especially if you shoot in RAW. The lens is not very strong HA (virtually invisible). There is no distortion on my cropped matrix, just like vignetting. It may be a wide-angle lens, but it's still as much as 37mm, and I like the bokeh of the lens - see the sample photos for yourself. The lens gets very sharp at 5.6 and holds back and side light, which is important for landscape photography.

More nuances:

The difference between the 35mm and 37mm focal length is almost not felt. The lens is pretty hard to focus. True, the depth of field is pretty decent, and even for the F2.8 diaphragm, the depth of field is indicated. In general, it is best to focus on a wide-angle lens with the help of information about the focusing distance; it’s quite difficult to get into the zone of sharpness by eye. When focusing, the front of the lens moves only 0.5 cm forward, while the entire lens block moves. Most likely, the use of an adapter with a lens will also not allow you to focus on infinity, since the rim of the rear lens will abut against the lens of the adapter.

For owners of modern Canon cameras there is a modern similar lens - Canon EF 40mm f / 2.8 STM:

Conclusions:

An interesting wide-angle lens with good sharpness and softness of the picture. There were many different options for the Mir-1 lens, because their quality can be very different, especially it is worth paying attention to the difference in enlightenment and frame of the case.

They presented such a lens with a Zenith camera.
The camera is defective, and the lens is almost new.
I have a Sony a7 2. You can put any lens through an adapter.
Actually I use many old ones.
I’m testing this one for now, but on first impressions, in principle, not bad.
True, to achieve sharpness throughout the frame, you must shoot from 8.0
At the edges of 5,6 soap.
It’s also difficult to bring perfect sharpness with him.
The focus ring is quite tight, but maybe it’s on my specimen.
Later I will add a couple of photos for an example.

    • Serge

“Later” is long gone, but where are the promised couple of pictures?

Hello. I have a Sony a58 and I had problems installing this lens through a simple M42 adapter. If I first twist the adapter into the lens and want to insert it into the carcass, do not insert. And if you insert the adapter to the carcass and then attach the lens, it twists. This is not normal, is it? Did anyone have similar problems with other cameras on Minolt A mount?

Gentlemen, do not suffer with him. As already noted by Arkady, even when winding through normal rings on the Olympus Boot and so on, the lens is solid soap. He was soap on the film. Once again, I repeat - this is the only Soviet glass that flew into the trash can, even indiscriminately read the bolts on the screws - although it may be in vain - I did not appreciate the quality of the materials. Optically helpless - ANY standard zoom will shoot better and will be with af.
Soap on a film soap on a crop soap on ff.
      He is terrible !!!

      • Fyodor

This is either a lens you have killed or something with vision, because this lens is very sharp from aperture of 5.6

      • anonym

You just came across a bad option. my world1v beats the canon L-image on the open fixture.

      • Vadim

It is reckless to make a global conclusion on a single instance. My Mir-1B has excellent sharpness since 2.8.

And a separate hello to Arkady - my Mir is on the Nex, whose 18-55 kit has a front cover diameter of exactly 49mm, as a result, when I change lenses - Mir, Gelik, Kit - I don't even change the front cover. And finding a 49mm filter is not a problem at all.

      • Edward

But what about the pictures of a girl with a camera (where the camera is vertical), and women's hands on the bars? In my opinion they are gorgeous, and what a juicy color volume in the photo “female hands on the lattice”, no whale will give such a color.
You were obviously in a hurry with the release of this lens. I’m thinking about buying one, they sell 1500 rubles

    • Vadim

Take a closer look, maybe the push-in adapter mount sticks out through the adapter and prevents you from screwing in the lens.

  • SergeyM

    Arkady, consult, plz ...
I have a line of Soviet glasses - I do not collect, but I shoot. On a mirrorless camera with a crop of 1,5.

    Actually, I use:
    1 - Zenitar-fishy 16 mm
    3 - Zenitar-M 50 / 1,7
    4 - Jupiter-37 and Tair-11 by 135 mm.

In principle, there are enough of them for ALMOST everything - but there is a “hole” in number “2”.
You need glass, giving, taking into account the crop, 50 mm or slightly less.
From the Soviet I would like ...

Formally, the World-1V fits perfectly into the focal length.
    But what a soapy shit ...! (((
I went through 5-6 pieces - I got rid of them all. Soap trash.

I would like to stay “in the Soviet format” and plug hole number 2 ...))
At the same time, “no matter what,” I would not like. The glasses that I already have are this. in fact, the best of the Soviet in their class. You need something that is not inferior to them. Light and sharp.
What do you recommend looking for?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would take a cheap autofocus Yongnuo 35 / 2.0 and not bother.

      • SergeyM

I have Sony NEX - and Yongnuo, it seems, does only for Kenon / Nikon ...

    • Rodion

There is a version of Mir-1, but not B.
A good varic is also the Pentacon 29 / 2.8.

  • Azake

on my crop this Mir-1B lens is a terrible soap. found on the Internet such a statement that the matrix may not “resolve” this lens, originally designed for FF or for a matrix with a smaller number of pixels. correct, if not right. or just my copy is defective. Canon 70D carcass (20Mp).

    • B. R. P.

Rather, the matrix does not allow the lens, but the lens matrix. And initially this lens is designed for FF, not just on the matrix, but on the film.

  • Andrei

I found the world-1 at a flea market in Paris, I gave 5 euros, the ring was very tight, I told the Arab and crap that this objective is now only decorative, it fell from 10 euros to 5. I unrolled it in a minute (there literally in a minute when you know reaching the helicoid, pshiknul wd-40, everything began to run as in a new one, wd-40 erased as best he could, not recommeduezza this rocket infection to plump in obktivy, but I was not sorry, and the diaphragm there should not be enough for the remains of wd-40 steam ... in short, why am I talking for so long, there is sometimes in a hurry if the stopper is not exactly set, everything will become soapy.
suspicion that the people who are bending chases the world-1 will come across such cleaned up cheses ass. and then they carry some strange crap supposedly onto the film, he * only * allows it, but there will be a shortage of the number. actually on the film there is somewhere up to 100 mega resolution, on m43 16 mega or there on D4 there is also a 16 mega world. or there they say something else. but in general it’s quite enough on the street. yes it is compact, it looks smaller than nikkor 35f1.8, you put it in hyperfocal and walk under the nose of the people you click them, an excellent option! Well, if you do this in the ghetto in manila, then again, the very same time, if the Asian gopniks take the camera away, then it’s not a pity the 5th euro objective.

  • SERGEI

I bought a tilt M42-micro 4 \ 3 (Panas GF-5) Which lens is better to put? MIR-1 fit? Industar 61 only shoots on macro. Thank you in advance.

  • Ilya

Good day! Do you think I can fully use this lens on the Nikon N2020? If so, which adapter is ideal? Thanks!

  • Yaroslav

Tell me if anyone managed to "make friends" this lens and Nikon with adapters (both with and without a lens). Is there infinity and does it not rest against the lens?

    • Vadim

Have you read the review at all? Read again - according to the focusing distance everything is described in full - 50, max 70cm. The mirror does not cling (at least on the crop), even with a rim around the rear lens.

  • Alexander

Greetings gentlemen, please tell me, but on Nikon D5300 crop there will be infinity with this world, or not!?! ??

    • Oleg

On any Nikon camera, no matter crop or not, there will be no infinity with the M42 adapter - Nikon. This applies to all lenses with M42, M39, etc. Infinity will only be when using an adapter with a corrective lens, which degrades the image quality.

  • Victor S.

As for the fears - will suit Nikon. The lens is small, it is not possible to change the flange distance by alterations - yes. But as for the adapter.
Without a lens - a maximum distance of 0,7 m. An adapter with a good lens (coated) is required. Screw on the adapter carefully while focusing set closer to the minimum distance (away from infinity).
When working, you do not need to twist the focus to infinity, since this scheme has a large "infinity overshoot". When approaching the “infinity” mark, the rear part of the lens rests against the adapter lens, so there is no need to tighten the focusing ring there. Infinity there is a maximum at “2m”, no more.
Image quality (sharpness) - at 2.8 aperture it is bad, by 4 it is better, and at 5,6 it is quite decent. The main thing is to guess with exposure and focus.

  • Fedor

I have Nikon and an adapter with a lens, screwed on the adapter white and black MIR 1, not one rested against the lens. There is infinity with a lens, even a slight overrun.

  • Alexander

6 years ago I bought my Mir1m from my grandfather at a flea market in a state of “no fly sitting” in a glass and with a top lid. Arriving home, I experienced complete disappointment: strong soap on all diaphragms. However, looking closely, I noticed that the red dots on the rim of the meniscus and the diaphragm setting ring in the extreme right position do not coincide by about 1mm. Probably, collecting n + 1 copies, the tired fingers of the collector simply did not turn the frame all the way. Trusted it, after that the lens gives out exceptional sharpness at 5.6-8 and very good, starting from 4.
There are no scratches on the lenses of the "shahi", no collectors inside. Released in 1987. In the film era, I had Mir1b with debris inside and fingerprints under an anti-reflective coating - it was visible if I breathed. Lenses of completely different quality. Shaha calmly resolves 18MP crop, his drawing is airy and voluminous. The only pity is that there is no enlightenment.

  • Vladimir

Hello everyone! And did anyone encounter the problem of touching the shank behind the mirror on the 5D?

    • Vladimir

      Good afternoon. Yes.
The problem was when installing Helios 44-2 through an adapter with a chip. It manifested itself visually in the form of a black bar in the upper part of the frame, and only at long (1.6 sec) exposures. On short ones, the mirror touched, but there was no strip. It was necessary to file the rear lens mount of Helios by about 0,5 - 1 mm.
And with what lens did the mirror touch on the 5D show? I am also considering buying Mir-1B for 5D. I would not like to "file" it either.

    • Vladimir

If the presence of infinity is not critical, then it is possible to eliminate the grazing of the mirror without using a file. On Helios, the mirror touched me only when focusing further than 10 meters. I glued 3 layers of black electrical tape between the lens and the adapter. The lens began to "not turn" into the adapter by about half of the M42 turn. The touching disappeared, but the “infinity” on the lens began to correspond to about 10 meters in reality, it does not focus further. If 10 meters is enough for you, then “duct tape” is better than a file.

    • Vladimir

Yes. Search for the phrase “Mir-1V full frame rework”. At least I had to file the "half-skirt" with a file.

  • Oleg

On the first penny of Canon at 2.8, vignetting is very noticeable, the center is good in sharpness, but the edges are noticeably worse - there is no point in cropping when shooting, only placing the main part strictly in the center, and cropping in Photoshop or another program. The mirror touches. I removed the “skirt”, helped to increase the distance to about 6 m, then it still clings. Not much, even allows you to take a picture, but it hooks, so it's better not necessary. It may still need to be filed, but it is clear that at infinity, the lens also extends beyond the edge of the adapter - do not cut the lens) In general, you can take a picture of a person in full growth, but landscapes do not work (in my case), since I do not want to cut further no need to use a lens at infinity.

As the main one I would not recommend, but for periodic “artistic” filming, you can have one in the collection, after all, the picture differs from ordinary native fifty dollars and whales. But its market price, in my opinion, is high - for some reason it is much more expensive than 44 Helios.

The focusing ring is definitely unusual - it is thin and close to the mount, you often start twisting in the center, which is why the connection with the adapter begins to unscrew)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the detailed review.

  • Igor

Wide-angle Mir-1v is especially applicable with cropped DSLRs, because for these cameras - the lens is like a normal fifty for full-frame cameras ...

    • Rodion

DOF and MDF are not very pleasant.

      • Igor

MDF - if it is hyper-small, it gives strong geometric distortions of objects - like “fisheye”. Mir-1v - it is better to use it as fifty dollars ...

        • Rodion

There is no fish eye - the lens distortion is very small, the usual perspective distortion and nothing more.

  • Igor

It is clear that the lens does not have a fish eye ... I am talking about something else ... that from close distances ... .30 cm and less ... a person's nose in the frame will occupy 70% ... with significant distortions of the face geometry ... Since perspective distortions in wide-angle lenses are located at the edges frame ... then for a crop ... it fits perfectly like fifty dollars with minimal distortion ...

    • Rodion

... the usual perspective distortion and nothing more. Who makes portraits shoot for him? There are tons of other plots that require an angle of 60 and a small MDF. I really like taking pictures of all sorts of flowers with alarms.

      • Igor

Well, shoot flowers ... And I shoot landscapes on world 1c without any distortions ... I have a cropped DSLR ...

  • Oleg

In this World, sharpness is somewhat similar to Helios-40. Helios, however, did not shoot, but from reviews without processing it is clearly visible that the edges are not just blurry, they are very blurry, so that Photoshop sharpness will not help. And when I look at them, I immediately remember the pictures from the World, a very similar picture, in any case, in the open. It is necessary to position the subject strictly in the center, and if you need a different location, then crop the program. On the one hand, this is a minus, on the other hand, it gives a certain artistry.

The red line is the central part, the photo is full frame on the open one. I will try to add uncropped pictures from the full frame later, as now only personal ones are available.
