Review of World-1B

Lens Instance Mir-1V 2.8 / 37 from this review was released in 1985 on Vologda plant. Unlike some of his brothers, the lens has yellow lens enlightenment.

Dimensions of the Mir-1V and Helios-81N lens

Dimensions of the Mir-1V and Helios-81N lens

The first thing that surprises is that the lens is very small and compact, there are three control rings on the lens, therefore it looks rather strange. The focusing ring has a pronounced similarity to the nut due to the clear edges.

In 1958, Mir-1 (under M39) received the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Brussels, and in 1959 Mir-1 was awarded the II Degree Diploma of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR. Honestly, I don't know how prestigious it is, but nowadays lenses do not have the same quality as receiving awards. Some charm has been lost, and it is very pleasant to use the lens that has the “Name”. The lens was copied from Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm F2.8, they say that there was even an FK (Flektogon Krasnogorsky) F2,8 37 mm lens, which later, in fact, became the MIR-1 lens.

Modifications:

You can find a lot of lens modifications, for example such a. They have the same optical design, but different frames and enlightenment. Basically, you can often find such instances:

World 1 thread M39 or M42 for SLR cameras.
World-1 Automatic under the SLR cameras Kiev-10, -15.
Mir-1Ts for SLR cameras Zenit-4.
Mir-1A with interchangeable shank. Using an interchangeable shank, you can hook the lens without losing infinity to Nikon or Kenon.
Mir-1V - lens variant from this review. Yellow enlightenment and a slightly different frame.
Mir-1Sh special budget option.
Mir-1-R special budget option, it’s very well written about them on the website of Sergey Elizarov in the section MIR-1.

Advantages:

  1. Like any other old Soviet lens - Mir-1B is made glass and metal, because he will serve for a very long time, but with careful handling - forever. And it’s simple, working with a well-assembled lens is much more pleasant than with cheap Chinese plastic. Now it’s very fashionable to write in the lens reviews that the lens has a metal mount. But in the old Soviet and indeed in the old manual lenses of all countries of the world - the entire body is made of metal alloy, in the extreme case it has several plastic parts.
  2. I repeat, but Mir-1V is perfect and full frame and cropped cameras and other, smaller formats. This is important because many Soviet optics enthusiasts use it on cropped digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, and after upgrading to full format, they can continue to use this lens.
  3. The lens has aperture preset ring. An irreplaceable thing for manual lenses. Pointed at aperture 2.8, and at the time of shooting, closed the aperture to the desired value. But there is one but described in the flaws.
  4. When used on Nikon DX cameras, the viewing angle will be equal to the viewing angle for the lens in 55.5mm in full frame. That is, the lens almost turns into a standard fifty dollars on the crop.
  5. Gives an interesting picture.
Bokeh is not MIR-1 V

Bokeh is not MIR-1 V

Disadvantages:

  1. Very not convenient focus ring. The ring is located near the lens mount to the camera. Also, the focus distance indicators are very poorly visible, as they are located even closer to the focus ring. And even worse, the aperture control ring is much larger and wider and is located almost in the middle of the lens. Personally, I often, instead of twisting the focus ring, twisted the aperture ring.
  2. Easy travel of the diaphragm ring. Since the focusing ring is rather inconvenient, you often touch the aperture ring and knock it down. Do not knock down the aperture preview ring only at 2.8 when the control ring and the preview ring are in the same position. Therefore, most of the photos from this review were taken precisely at 2.8.
  3. Custom front filter diameter of 49mm. All Soviet lensesthat went through my hands with a front filter diameter of 49mm were without a front cover or filter. This is a real flaw in our time. True, the lens comes in a stylish box where it can be stored without a back and front cover.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Sample photos on Mir-1V made on Nikon D200 without any processing with imprinted data from EXIF and reduced size to 1600 * 1200.

About the picture:

It is rather difficult for me to judge, since the lens with my adapter works only at a distance of up to 50 cm, but still, I will draw a few conclusions. The lens really cuttingbut the picture has gentleness, which is quite a big rarity. The color rendition is neutral, the contrast of the lens is not very good. Due to the low contrast and not very saturated picture, photos turn out a bit similar to photos with monocle. Contrast and color can very easily be adjusted using a graphical editor, especially if you shoot in RAW. The lens is not very strong HA (virtually invisible). There is no distortion on my cropped matrix, just like vignetting. It may be a wide-angle lens, but it's still as much as 37mm, and I like the bokeh of the lens - see the sample photos for yourself. The lens gets very sharp at 5.6 and holds back and side light, which is important for landscape photography.

More nuances:

The difference between the 35mm and 37mm focal length is almost not felt. The lens is pretty hard to focus. True, the depth of field is pretty decent, and even for the F2.8 diaphragm, the depth of field is indicated. In general, it is best to focus on a wide-angle lens with the help of information about the focusing distance; it’s quite difficult to get into the zone of sharpness by eye. When focusing, the front of the lens moves only 0.5 cm forward, while the entire lens block moves. Most likely, the use of an adapter with a lens will also not allow you to focus on infinity, since the rim of the rear lens will abut against the lens of the adapter.

For owners of modern Canon cameras there is a modern similar lens - Canon EF 40mm f / 2.8 STM:

Conclusions:

An interesting wide-angle lens with good sharpness and softness of the picture. There were many different options for the Mir-1 lens, because their quality can be very different, especially it is worth paying attention to the difference in enlightenment and frame of the case.

I tried my lens, lathers as for me very much. aperture blades like 10, 92years is obtained if you look at the number.
    but it turns out http://content.foto.mail.ru/mail/dimas_os/4/s-5.JPG

In general, I like the lens, you only need to find a good copy.

    • Dmitriy

Yes, the lens is interesting. What aperture did you use for this? I'm sharp at 2.8 (though it's difficult to aim), but the softit on contrasting areas like yours, but the edges don't wash like that (it's true on the crop), it gives a kind of diffuse effect in short, and at F 5.6 - 8 I achieve maximum sharpness.

it seems that at 5.6 camera jpg was removed without processing - http://s017.radikal.ru/i428/1302/e7/23602f8a8c3c.jpg

      Dmyrios,

Are there any signs of disassembly on your lens? You have a clearly defective instance! Maybe someone disassembled (to clean the diaphragm) and assembled wrong! For example, put the rear lens backwards, this is rare, but it happens!
I used to have Mir-1Sh, Mir-1V, and Mir-1. Now I have a white Mir-1 and a black Mir-1. All have good sharpness, near field at f4, acceptable contrast. Of the five lenses, none was bad! When comparing test shots on the monitor screen at 100%, it is barely noticeable that Mir-1V lags behind in sharpness! It is visible only at 100%, i.e. if the increase is set to “actual size”.
      So treat him!

  • Eugene

I don’t know what happened with my Mir-1B instance, but it’s terribly soapy, only in the center is a normal picture. I use through M42 — Canon EOS with a “dandelion”.
That's how much I fell in love with JUPITER-37A, I don’t understand what to do with Mir-1B.

      Try to cover the hole

  • Yana

Arkady, I want to tell you that World 1c is also unique in that if you unscrew the front lens from it, it turns into a wonderful macro lens!

  • Novel

    "Special budget option"

    Arkady,
In my opinion, the word "budget" nowadays often has a different meaning: inexpensive, cheap. And your phrase can be understood in this sense, i.e. that this version was produced for schoolchildren. (Where did the student get money for a DSLR).

We understand that Sergei Elizarov wrote on his website “Mir-1 was delivered to budget organizations, by bank transfer” meaning organizations financed from the state treasury.

  • Dmitriy

I have such a lens in my hands. Year of release 1985. Number of aperture blades -10. All that remains is to find and try the adapter ...

  • Dmitriy

Can you tell me, for Nikon D7000, buy an adapter with add. glass for focusing to infinity? And one more thing: do you need the so-called "dandelion"?

  • valera

Good afternoon, I recently purchased a SONY NEX-5NK with SEL 1855 and SEL 55210 lenses, an adapter ring FL-NEX-M42. I photograph for myself and pleasure, and recently, at school, Zenit TTL was once a long time ago. Little experience. Tell me which wide-angle can I apply? Thanks.

  • Vladimir

Hello Arkady, I have a desire to purchase this lens, using it on film Zenit-11 and Nikon-D5100, however, the seller warns me that ... "There is a small growth of mold inside the lens (thin cobweb)" ... it will not affect. Is this so, or is it worth looking for an option without a defect? symbolic price of 1000 rubles. Thanks in advance and sorry if you asked the question in the wrong thread.

  • Ismail

Maybe I have an unsuccessful copy, but when comparing when shooting a video between him and Helios 44m-4, I realized how terrible the sharpness of Mir is ... I also compared it with Pentacon 29 and realized that Mir should be disposed of in favor of a more expensive, but sharper and stylish-looking Pentacon 29 ...

  • More Valery

Yesterday I tried MIR-1V. At aperture of 5,6, sharpness is better than native
    KIT-18 ... 55 canon.

  • Alexander

For several months I have been the owner of the Mir-1B lens (I use the Olympus E-PM1 camera). Initially I was disappointed in the choice of this lens, because in comparison with the lenses "Helios 44m-6 2/50" and "Carl Zeiss Jena PANCOLAR 1.8 / 50", this lens seemed very mediocre. But despite the negativism in relation to the world-1b, he continued to shoot and eventually discover in it those advantages that were laid down. Now, I can firmly state that this lens is a decent world-1b, but a CUSTOM lens with plasticity and softness. Naturally, when choosing a lens mir-1b, like any other, you need to test it.

  • Maxim T.

I shot for a very long time on Nikon D5100 + Mir-1V and now I can summarize some of the results. In general, the article by Arkady is objective. I can confirm a lot of what he wrote. Probably, we all have different samples of this lens with their own characteristics. I'll tell you about yours.

    Sharpness

I do street photography, so I immediately noticed that the sharpness on the edges of my crop leaves much to be desired at f / 4 (I compare it with the Helios 44M and 44-2, whale 18-55, pentacone 29). However, this same feature turned out to be very useful when I was shooting the old architecture, and the lens very nicely washed the grass at the bottom of the frame. I was very pleased with this lack of it. In other cases, this almost does not bother me, since I never set the sharpness too high. On f / 5.6, everything is perfectly acceptable.

    Color rendition

I've always liked the color and white balance on manual optics. This lens is no exception. The picture cannot be called contrasting, but here a lot depends on the light. The hood won't hurt him at all. It is better to save pictures in RAW and edit (I have long hoped that everyone does this, but no. Many owners of DSLRs - different folders and mothers, and just girls - save in JPG and enjoy poorly exposed frames).

    Dynamic range

According to my observations, some features of this lens affect the dynamic range of the picture. In conditions when very bright and dark areas appear in the field of view, the lens behaves somehow very uncertainly. In addition, I noticed that with this it is much better for glasses with multi-enlightenment. But in cloudy weather, Mir-1V is very good and can show itself well.

    Focus, aperture setting

    (In the article.)

I recently bought a Pentacon 2.8 / 29 MC and completely switched to it. I agree with Ismail - the pentacon is very good. In the near future I will write my review about it.

    • Gregory

The consumer is quite satisfied with the final result of those. Jpeg ..)) Why then a DSLR?

  • Gregory

I remade my World - 1B for a working distance of 46,5 mm, taking into account the installation of the Kp 42 / N ring, it turned out well, the focus ring is close to the carcass.

  • Kevin

Guys, advise some inexpensive lens, possibly manual of this focal length for a crop of 35 mm.

  • Alexander

According to the comments read above, the conclusion is that all MIR-1s are different in sharpness, I have an AUTOMATIC device from KIEV-15 converted it to a full-fledged one under M42, it was not particularly played, but in the first pictures (a small test after the alteration) it seemed sharper than the whale from KENON 18- 55 III, earlier on KIEV it was also not impressive. Helios-81AVTOMAT and Jupiter-11AVTOMAT used to crawl after alteration and the numbers work well, MIR-1 can have such an instance, I’ll try to figure it out somehow.

  • Michael

Try unscrewing the front lens and flipping it over. Very interesting photos are obtained!

    • nikola

I’d like to see a couple of options so that it’s not in vain to fool))!

  • Sergei

My lens World 1 in 1994 Guards has two rings, focusing and aperture control, both rings are corrugated and outwardly the same.

  • a guest

Mir-1B, 10th aperture diaphragm, also knurled rings and outwardly the same. Nice lens. I was happy on the film and now on the crop it continues to delight in moderately sharp and contrasting picture.

  • anonym

I put it on canon, ether 59, 2 mm, a bit tight. there is an opportunity to exchange for world 10 with a surcharge, 28 mm, on a 44 crop, but it costs 3 times more. Should I change? or is it an exchange of awl for soap? please tell me who has experience with Soviet optics. By the way, I was shooting a landscape, at 5,6 in the center the sharpness is excellent, and the right edge is blurred ... a marriage? cover up to 8 did not allow lighting. why then the left is not so blurred?

  • anonym

In general, when I enlarged the photo by 100 percent, with the same aperture, I noticed that the whale is 18-55, the sharpness at the edges and corners is higher! how is this possible? still scolding whales for poor sharpness

    • a guest

You are not comparing correctly. And one and the other lenses are quite worthy and have their purpose. In the same way, you can get a quality comparable to the quality of a mobile phone in China and with the World good detail, and quite the opposite. Experiment with one and the other lens and see under what conditions they manifest themselves the most.

  • Alex

Why do I have a camera mirror that rests on the lens when installed on a Canon 5d markII at infinity?

  • anonym

on cropped canon everything is fine. I, too, sold my world-1b, to a person with 5D, he had helios, it seemed normal, screwed on the world - it touches the mirror. I asked him a question: why, if there is money for a full format, buy Soviet lenses? flange 5 d fits mir-1b, only the problem is in the mirror.

  • Anton

Good afternoon, do not tell me that it is better to take helios-81n or world-1?

    • Lynx

as a station wagon and portraitist - Gelik.
like shooting all sorts of different flowers and "mowing under the film" - the world. Just keep in mind that you still have to saw through the world at infinity, or buy an adapter with a lens, and they are not cheap, and the gel will immediately rise like a native.

  • Alexander

It depends on what it is needed for. What kind of camera do you have? Helios is faster, longer focal length, will give good background blur. But as a lens for every day, it will not work, too small an angle of view on the crop. I have helios, but 44-2. There was Peace. The world on crop has 59,2mm on the canone, it is quite difficult for them to focus, but more suitable for landscapes than helios. For the price they are the same plus or minus, I mean Helios 44-2, I don’t know about 81. I took a new Mir, '89 of release for 300 hryvnia. If you want portraits, take Helios.

  • anonym

an adapter with a lens must be on nikon, on canon that the world, that helios and a large number of lenses on the m-42 are put without problems about infinity, through an adapter for 10 dollars.
