Nikon D200 review

Nikon D200 great camera, which was released back in 2005, but can still please you with a wonderful picture. The camera has a nice clone: Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, which differs from the Nikon D200 only in software and better matrix.

It is very funny that now on the official website of Nikon there are only two sections for modern SLR cameras - this is a professional section and amateur. So, on the same site, the camera is positioned as semi-professional. Just after dividing only into two classes, D200 was not transferred to the “professional” section. Why am I? And to the fact that Nikon D200 is really a professional camera with which it’s not a shame to shoot any type of picture. Can here see the evolution of all Nikon cameras.

In general, I am delighted with the Nikon D200, and after a day of working with it, I don’t feel like shooting anything else. The camera is quite weighty, sits perfectly in my hand, behaves perfectly with heavy lenses.

When working with a Nikon D200 camera, I highly recommend paying attention to such important parameters as:

  1. Great ergonomics. This is expressed in everything from a rubberized handle and discs to a shooting mode lock. Using well-thought-out ergonomics, the camera is very convenient to control; all the most necessary settings are always available and always at hand. By the way, even the bottom of the camera (where the tripod socket is) is also rubberized.
  2. Optional monochrome display. Just an indispensable thing for a professional. The display shows all the most important settings - ISO, aperture values, excerptsamendments exposure, the amount of free space on the card, white balance, picture quality, flash mode, battery charge, focus point and all that is possible. When the camera is turned off, the number of frames that can be taken to the remaining space on the memory card remains on the display. The monochrome display is larger than in younger models Nikon D90, D80, D70(s) D50, D7000.

  3. Dust and moisture protection. Of course, it is worth mentioning that the protection will be complete only if there are dust and moisture protective lenses, but in nature I have not seen such, because I will say that the camera perfectly tolerates light rain, dust, dirt and slight frosts.
  4. Using the card CF. Big card CF can reach enormous read/write speeds, which is very important for continuous shooting, and indeed for copying files to a computer. Although, my CF 32GB 400x during operation showed itself to be only 5MB/sec better than SD 32 GB class 10. As you understand, the Nikon D200 can handle even 32 GB normally.
  5. Huge continuous shooting buffer. Buffer can store 21 RAW files. Given that the maximum shooting speed 5 frames per second, the camera can click as long as 4 seconds in quick mode. 4 seconds is already a normal indicator. For example, my Nikon D90 starts to slow down after three seconds of filming at a speed of 4.5 frames per second. Also, keep in mind that when shooting in JPEG, the buffer becomes almost dimensionless.
  6. Whole 10.2 megapixels. Chasing megapixels is not worth it at all, but still 10.2 MP is enough for shooting in almost any genre. Of course, more is better, but I do not see any difference between the 10.2 megapixels of my Nikon D200, D80 and 12.3 megapixels of mine Nikon D90. Anyway, baby Nikon D40 with its 6.1 MP it can sometimes do with sharpness Nikon D90 with the same lens - look at the section Battle of Megapixels.

An example of a photograph on a Nikon D200 without processing. High ISO 1600

  7. The matrix on ISO 100 allows you to get just a very good picture, everything above ISO 400 is already a very bad result. About it a little lower. Having experience working with processing images from different cameras, I can say that at low ISOs, at some points, a CCD image is simpler and easier to “bring to mind”. The matrix of the Nikon D200, although in some respects similar to the sensors used in the models Nikon D80, D40x, D60, D3000but still different. Details here.
  8. The camera has focus motor, this will allow you to use any optics that can focus on Nikon, for example, the camera works great with non-motorized lenses Nikon 50mm F1.8D, Nikon 70-210 F4, etc. The motor buzzes when focusing, but nothing can be done, in order to save money on non-motorized lenses, you can be patient.

An example of a photograph on a Nikon D200 without processing. High ISO 1600

  9. The camera can measure exposure with any lens (and without a lens at all). This means that it will be possible to work in semi-automatic aperture priority mode with any manual lens. Even if you wear instead of a lens tin can, the camera will still measure exposure meter correctly. Also, for older lenses, a menu for setting the focal length and maximum aperture is provided. It is very, very convenient. Personally, I put on the programmable button the choice of focal length and aperture for manual optics. When I use my Helios-81N AI-s type, the Nikon D200 camera correctly displays 50mm focal length and maximum aperture F / 2.0, and if I twist the aperture ring on the lens, the camera also understands this and shows the following values F / 2.8, F / 4.0, etc. Important set manual lens parametersfor matrix metering to work, otherwise only spot and center-weighted will work.
  10. At the camera 11 focus points and just one cross-shaped sensor. Now 11 focus points put on the simplest Nikon D3000You won’t be surprised. But the camera has 4 focus modes and a special switch for them.

Sample photo on Nikon D200 without processing

  11. Nikon D200 has a minimum 1/8000 short shutter speed, sometimes a very useful thing, especially when you need to shoot at aperture of 1.4 (or higher) on a sunny day. And still, Nikon D200 can fulfill non-standard excerpts type 1 \ 750, 1 \ 3000, 1 \ 90s, etc., which cannot be selected in priority mode excerpts or in manual mode. Intermediate values shutter speed allow adjust exposure more precisely. For example, with such shutter speeds, younger cameras, like Nikon D80, D90.
  12. The camera can control flashes in command mode. That is, if you have a Nikon D200 and any flash like Nikon SB-600, SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, SB-910 or third-party manufacturers, you can put it in a radius of 10 meters and shoot using Nikon's creative lighting system NIKON-CLS.

    Sample photo on Nikon D200

    Sample photo on Nikon D200

  13. And of course, fast flash sync. You can shoot with an external flash that supports FP mode, with any shutter speedup to 1/8000. Very important and necessary parameter.
  14. A bunch of all sorts of connectors that you rarely use, it's just too lazy to write about them, who cares, download the instructions and read for yourself.

    Example photo on Nikon D200

    Example photo on Nikon D200

  15. Limit ISO 100-1600 (100-3200). At the moment, this is not the best indicator, but I would say very low.
  16. The camera has  1.005-pixel RGB matrix metering sensor exposureinherited from the flagship camera D2X. Measurement works very accurately.

  17. Those who have read up to this seventeenth paragraph have probably already grown tired. There are many more important points that should be written about, but this is already necessary for a very narrow circle of people, therefore we will limit ourselves to this list of important aspects of the camera.

Disadvantages. Since I took the camera to a professional type, you can demand a lot from it. because I consider serious shortcomings:

  1. The delay when you turn on the menu or view pictures. Delay does not always occur, depending on whether you watched or took a picture on the camera. Usually, after turning on the camera and pressing the menu button or viewing the image, the camera “thinks” for 3-5 seconds, which is a disastrously long period of time. The card activity indicator is on. Actually the “communication" of the camera with the card takes this time. On my two cards, 2GB and 32GB 400x, the delay time is the same. This is not a very important point, but sometimes waiting for 3-5 seconds is still not a hunt. But the camera turns on instantly.

Example photo on Nikon D200. The light meter easily copes with non-standard tasks

Example photo on Nikon D200. The light meter easily copes with non-standard tasks

  2. The battery runs out very quickly. Really I have enough battery for 400 shots. You can still take a small photo shoot on one charge. But, for example, at a wedding without 2-3 batteries just can not do (checked more than once). This disease is treated by buying a special booster. The booster adds convenience when shooting, but it takes extra space in the case and adds extra weight.

    Example photo on Nikon D200

  3. The viewfinder does not give 100% frame coverage, but only the usual 95%. It's really annoying when after the picture you find an extra piece in the photo that fits in these 5%, which were not visible behind the scenes.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  4. 2.5 inch display. Yes after Nikon D90, D300 look at 230.000 points after 900.000 points at D90 not that anymore. Of course, offending the old D200 is bad, but the display is not the same as before. Many say that the D200 gives a bad picture, from personal experience I will say that professionals will not distinguish a picture from Nikon D200 and Nikon D7000 with the same lens and the same settings at low ISO when printing and / or on a computer monitor (I personally conducted an experiment that confirmed this). But almost everyone will say that the picture looks much worse on the Nikon D200 display than anywhere else. Why is not known.

  5. The standard lack of gum in all Nikon cameras is that they swell and fall off. Let me explain - the rubber, which is so nice to the touch, swells over time and comes off.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  6. Very poor results at high ISO. Given the age of the camera, you can come to terms with this.

  7. It’s bad that when switching the compression level, the RAW buffer still shows 21 frames. For example: compressed RAW weighs about 10 MB, and not compressed about 16 MB, it would not be bad if the camera placed more frames in the buffer with the compressed format.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  8. No focus adjustment. Honestly, when I bought a Nikon D200, I was just saddened by this, since for some of my lenses adjustment would not hurt.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  9. Nikon D200 is one of the few cameras that does not have a menu for post-processing photos. In general, no processing of the filmed material with the camera is provided. I was very surprised when I discovered this. You can't even convert from RAW to JPEG.

A couple more moments:

Nikon D200 bribes with its ability to enlarge the image is actually 1 to 1 with one button. This is real, very much accelerates the choice of a sharp picture. Moreover, the camera enlarges the picture at the focus point. The camera is not such a familiar (for all users of the line below) the method of zooming the picture. To enlarge the picture you need to press as many as two buttons and the main control dial. But the multi selector has 8 directions. Impressions are positive.

Choose and don’t know what to take?

It is unlikely that someone will say with certainty whether the camera is suitable for you or not. At the moment Nikon D200 is outdatedher descendant Nikon D300 Has matrix cleaning, Live View and less noise at high ISO. Nikon D300s in addition, it also shoots video and clicks the shutter much faster, and even on 2 cards. Well and Nikon D7000 in general can still better. Well, if it’s at all hot to take a camera of a similar level, you can look at Nikon D80, which has similar image quality with the Nikon D200 and the only significant difference is not the ability to work with manual optics. Hack and predictor Aviator:

Nikon D200 - professional digital SLR camera, which is now not available and which can be taken at a ridiculous price. Able to do almost everything you need. Not suitable for beginners in photography - there is not a single automatic shooting mode, for everything you need to think for yourself. It is also hardly suitable for the pros, since it quickly eats up the battery and has strong noises at high ISO. But in fact, the only drawback of the camera is that now there are much more advanced Nikon D300(s) D7000that make things even better. So who will suit Nikon D200 - I can’t say for sure, but in skillful hands you can squeeze a lot from her.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

At one time, he switched from Nikon D3100 to Nikon D200. Very long and painfully chose between the D90 and D200. Thought it was better: novelty or omnivorous lenses and excellent, real colors? The forums on the D200 were very scared by the noise of the matrix, battery consumption and obsolescence. But on the other hand, the D90 does not know how to measure exposure with any lens and the same CMOS matrix with ugly colors. On the Internet, I came across a D200 with a mileage of only 5 thousand. frames for 3200 UAH. The condition of the new, even the gum did not come off. Taking it in hand, I understood the delight of the author of this article - after him I don't even want to look towards the D90 and other devices. In my hand lies like a glove. In CMOS matrices I really did not like the colors, some of them are not real. Another thing is CCD - what is not a frame, then an oil painting)) True, the battery eats a lot, but this is not a problem - I bought 2 additional ones and is enough for the eyes. Not the last, but maybe the first role in choosing a carcass, was the ability of this camera to measure exposure with absolutely any lens. Yes, this is just a godsend for me - an amateur to shoot with manual optics. Regarding the matrix noise, I can say that up to ISO 800 the noise is very acceptable, only at high ISO the frame starts to turn yellow ... But in the editor it’s easy to correct the white balance :) You can even shoot at ISO 1600, but this is a very last resort. Personally, when I read about these matrices, I was scared that they had very strong noises. I can safely say that "the result at an ISO value above 400 is very bad" - this is nonsense. Not so bad even at ISO 800. Display. The fact that he is small does not bother me. Everything is perfectly visible on it, graininess is almost not felt. I thought that the small size of the display would haunt my ego =)) but I was wrong - this is a pretty decent display. It was also very interesting that the buttons do not click, but simply gently pressed, and the shutter is very soft and pleasant (compared to the D3100 which shot shots with recoil like a gun :)). I want to say to the author of the article that my carcass has absolutely no delays when turning on the display, menu, opening the frame and has never been observed. Well, what else to say about this device? It has very good ergonomics, every button and every detail is thought out. Nothing more, everything is very conveniently located. His weight is really big. When working with him, my hands and neck get tired, but the fact that it is made of magnesium alloy and waterproof is warming my soul. And his weight inspires confidence in a solid and serious thing. In conclusion, I will say that I did not regret my choice at all and still do not look in the direction of new things, since it completely suits me. For people who are rushing about choosing a device and cannot decide whether to take the D200 or not, I will say that the fact that they throw mud at it in various forums and advise to take the D90 is not entirely objective. This is a very, very worthy DSLR even today. I already wrote my opinion about him. Read the article, read the comments, think, ask. The author wrote a lot about him, I just added. Thank you for attention. mikrokot@mail.ru

      Vitaly.
A good answer, I agree, but I want to note that it is wrong to say that a camera is better or worse.
Everything depends on the tasks and the taste of the photographer.
Therefore, Arkady's recommendations are correct, a professional cannot advise an older model, he will be known as a conservative and not a pro.
This, by the way, is such a disease for many - to advise, something about which they are personally delighted.
It is necessary to teach to give objective advice.
      Learn from Arkady.
Therefore, I like his blog !!!

  • Alexey

Well, does it make sense to change my old D70S to D200? After all, everything is the same (screwdriver screens, ergonomics, cards), only the D70 has a “eternal” battery (1550 frames - light), the pixel is thicker, there is less noise, and the resolution of 10 megapixels from 6 megapixels does not differ much.

    • Jury

The cameras are different, definitely not “all the same”. Whether it makes sense to change depends on what you need from the camera. You haven't said a word about it.

  • Andrei

I stand at the crossroads. D200 or D80? Now I have a D3000. it is clear that they are both better than what they are. But still. ???

    • Jury

If you're going to use manual lenses, the D200. If you don't need it, then I recommend D80 as a lighter, more compact and energy efficient (2-4 times more shots with a fully charged battery) device with a similar matrix. Subjectively - I like exposure metering better with the D200 - more accurate thanks to more sensors.

    • vitalitysharp

In fact, the d80 metering is completely useless compared to the d3000 and d200. It will light up, it will darken

  • Andrei

I shoot weddings and photosets for girls. on this I want to start a career as a photographer ...)))) which one is more suitable for this?

  • Jury

Both fit well, only the D200 has a very significant drawback - the battery runs out quickly - enough for 300-400 shots, no more. The D80 does not have this problem - depending on the capacity and condition of the battery, it can shoot about 1000 or more frames.

Features of the D200: 1/8000 shutter speed, metering with manual lenses, banks, slightly more convenient control of shooting parameters, more accurate exposure metering.

The D80 weighs less, with manual lenses it works only in manual mode, the minimum shutter speed is 1/4000. The controls are also convenient, I would not say that the D80 is significantly inferior to the D200 in this - there is a button for selecting the exposure metering mode, autofocus, AF / AE lock - what else is needed for happiness :)

If you don't need manual lens support, I recommend the D80 due to its lighter weight (therefore, less neck pulls) and more shots from one battery. I myself have a D200 for the reason that I actively use Jupiter-37A - the exposure metering does not work with it for the D80.

  • Andrei

but in d80 there is no screwdriver? that it seemed to me that there is, so I looked at it. I have a bunch of old USSR cameras, I thought to take pictures of their optics. if there is no motor, then I don’t need it ...

    • Jury

There is a screwdriver for both, but it has nothing to do with manual lenses. I was not talking about a screwdriver, but about the function of the exposure meter when working with manual lenses. If you connect Jupiter-37a or Helios-81n to Nikon D80, you will be able to shoot only in manual mode, that is M. And with Nikon D200 modes A and S will be available.

      • Arkady Shapoval

S mode will not be available, only A or M. In S mode, the letter S will blink, and the camera will work similarly to A mode. In general, if there is no idea about the subtleties, then the d80 will be the best option.

        • Andrei

I have no idea. I always shoot only in M mode ... I don't know anything about the others.

          • Arkady Shapoval

I'll tell you this, all modes P, A, S, M are very useful, not knowing about others - it does not do you honor.

            • Andrei

I understand it. Sorry for the ignorance, but I found a mode that suits me. I'm interested in what is better than d200 or d80.

              • Arkady Shapoval

                For autofocus optics - d80, for munal - d200.

              • Alexander

The D80 has a RAW file size of approximately 10 megapixels, while the D200, oddly enough, is over 16 megapixels. Are the matrices the same? Probably not quite so. The increased power consumption of the D200 is also not a random phenomenon (why would it ???) and, according to my personal observations, does not depend on the brightness and use of the screen. D200 RAW runs much better…. In the presence of both models, I want to take the one that is lighter, more economical, but…. As a result, the picture result of the D200 is much better (my personal opinion).

              • Arkady Shapoval

Different RAW file size due to file compression. Nikon 80 uses conventional compression with / without loss, while Nikon D200 uses uncompressed data without loss of quality. Details here https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/08/12-bit-raw-vs-14-bit-raw/ As for energy consumption, if you delve into the specifications, then the d200 has a double body kit for quick data reading, which most likely kills the battery faster. Because of this difference, it is often said that cameras have different matrices, but in serious western forums it is generally accepted that the d200 just has a different modification of the matrix.

            • kotofei

              A, S, M - certainly make sense. But "R" ... never could understand - why ?!

              • Arkady Shapoval

P is a very handy mode. It allows you to get rid of wasting time on rotating shutter speed / aperture in other modes. I use P mode a lot outdoors when I need to get the sharpest possible shot without having to bother with depth of field. It is very convenient to use P with wide-angle lenses. The shutter speed / aperture balance curve in P mode will not close the aperture beyond a certain value (diffraction threshold), while the shutter speed will be balanced. There are many other uses as well. The only thing is, I don't use shutter speed compensation in P mode (when P becomes P *). More generally, the P mode is “on and off”, focusing all its attention on composing the picture, focusing and philosophizing about life.
I am committed to the fact that all 4 basic exposure management modes are important and necessary. At first, modes A and M are extolled to heaven, but then situations force S to be used, and practice allows us to understand and use P.

        • Jury

Exactly, the camera does not know how to control the diaphragm of a manual lens)

  • Anastasia

Is it true that the D200 has a diopter adjustment of the viewfinder (for those with poor eyesight)? And is this often seen in cameras? Information about this, unfortunately, is not written anywhere.

    • Oleg

It is found in all SLR cameras; a small wheel near the viewfinder is responsible for this.

  • anonym

Everything is written in the instructions.

I recently bought myself a d300s, I was very happy when I shot macro, still lifes, etc. in the test mode. At the first drinking party (New Year 2015) I took pictures of those present, leaked them to a computer ... spat for a long time, edited, in short, I was tormented, and was glad that I did not have time to sell the D200! In the end, I “twisted” the excessive sharpness in the D300s to its normal position, slightly “warmed” the colors, but the picture from the D200 CCD for a portrait at low ISO is MUCH BETTER than that of the D300s and others like that, using the SMOS matrix! As for me, the 200 has only one serious drawback - the lack of precise focus adjustment, but this can also be solved by a more careful selection of optics when buying. Anyone who wants to shoot a female portrait and get tanned, young and “glossy ironed” ”Faces of my models - I recommend D200, you will not regret it! (IMHO)

    • anonym

So, and what settings to use, optimal for a portrait on the D200?

      • The Hedgehog

you'd better think about which lens to use for this .. with the settings you need to navigate in the place, if in general, then - the lowest ISO possible under these conditions, a sufficiently short shutter speed in order to avoid blurring, open aperture (but not always, depending on plot) ...

    • anonym

WHAT LENS CAN YOU ADVISE FOR D200, FOR TAKING LANDSCAPES ???

      • BB

Writing with CAPS is bad form.

How does the D200 differ from any other crop, that there are some specials to it. optical requirements? Nothing.
And the choice of optics has a separate topic, where everything is laid out on the shelves.

  • Kirill

Hello, I have a D200 - I am 100% satisfied ... but there is one harmful little thing: the slow flash sync mode (for long exposures) Does not work either in manual or shutter speed priority - absurd ...
Please tell me how to tie a slow sync. to controlled exposure ?? !!
    Thank you in advance.

  • Albert

At first NIKON D80 came to me, then I bought D3200. I shoot D200 for a month. I am not a great specialist, but I have been photographing since 1976 with different devices. I am very pleased with the D3200, especially in comparison with the D200. The most important advantage is that it fits perfectly with Helios-81N. Very good color rendering. Very good sharpness. I took a used one for 170 dollars at an online auction. The only negative - the rubber pads were swollen and torn from time to time. I took the strips from the car camera and thin black leather ... glued ... satisfied :)

  • Artem

Please share your advice. I took a used nikon d200 for myself, there was 800 UAH left. In stock, there is a choice of Helios 81N 50mm 2.0 for 500 UAH. and af nikkor 35-70mm 3.3-4.5 for 700 UAH. what to choose?

    • Lynx

for universalism - 35-70 (or look for 35-105), only for portraits - helios is also possible.

  • Valery

Artem, take helios 81N you will not want. One of the best fixes from the Soviet. Well, Nikkor 35-70 3.3-4.5 is nothing interesting, except autofocus ..

  • Artyom

I will also say my word.
My acquaintance with DSLRs began with the Olympus e300, donated by a friend. He lived so little that I didn't even understand all the shooting modes, the shutter ordered to live a long time. The cost of repairs was not pleasing (and I really wanted a photo from a DSLR with beautiful flowers), it was decided to buy a new camera. It was d3100 with whale 18-105. In search of soft, beautiful and natural colors, tons of information were read, Photoshop mastered, but still the colors were not the same. Not as beautiful as on the e300. A friend even joked - buy an e300, to which I replied - my camera is more modern and better.
Thanks to the article written above (and in particular the first comment), I began to look towards d200. And lo and behold, they sold it for not a great amount. When I was driving to the seller something, I remembered the e300 and the good old CCD matrix. Acquired and do not regret a bit. I am again the owner of the wonderful colors in the photo, the d200 (in comparison with the d3100) better detects BB and metering, the photo initially looks closer to the real one.
We have already written about the sound of the shutter, it’s soooo, one bliss.
d3100 set aside, and d200 became the faithful companion for walks

I have a d200. I bought this used machine and it had several broken pickels. But that didn’t upset me. I am very pleased with the device. It is very convenient to work with manual optics (only the viewfinder shaft is small :)
As for the delay of the device, I did not notice this. I had the firmware updated and the device is very smart :) Also, a friend bought a d300, so it was described by you, Arkady, similar lags (delay in viewing). His firmware did not change

Hello, I have a D200 - I’m 100% satisfied ... but there is one harmful trifle: the slow flash sync mode (for slow shutter speeds) Does not work either manually or in shutter priority - absurd ...
Please tell me how to tie a slow sync. to controlled exposure ?? !!
    Thank you in advance.

Hello, I have a Nikon D5000, is it worth changing it to a D200? Nravitsa take pictures on the manual. lenses and a screwdriver attracts. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • Lynx

Yes. Moreover, to find d200 for 7-10 thousand is not a question now.

  • Peter Sh.

Recently acquired it for shooting in the afternoon, in a good light.
I did not regret it, a very good tool. As expected, the colors are all in place, there are no drifts to extremes.
It is clear that for weak light, and even with movement it is not suitable.
But for this, the D610 is very suitable.
Finally, my torment and quest have ended!
