Nikon D200 review

Nikon D200 great camera, which was released back in 2005, but can still please you with a wonderful picture. The camera has a nice clone: Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, which differs from the Nikon D200 only in software and better matrix.

It is very funny that now on the official website of Nikon there are only two sections for modern SLR cameras - this is a professional section and amateur. So, on the same site, the camera is positioned as semi-professional. Just after dividing only into two classes, D200 was not transferred to the “professional” section. Why am I? And to the fact that Nikon D200 is really a professional camera with which it’s not a shame to shoot any type of picture. Can here see the evolution of all Nikon cameras.

In general, I am delighted with the Nikon D200, and after a day of working with it, I don’t feel like shooting anything else. The camera is quite weighty, sits perfectly in my hand, behaves perfectly with heavy lenses.

When working with a Nikon D200 camera, I highly recommend paying attention to such important parameters as:

  1. Great ergonomics. This is expressed in everything from a rubberized handle and discs to a shooting mode lock. Using well-thought-out ergonomics, the camera is very convenient to control; all the most necessary settings are always available and always at hand. By the way, even the bottom of the camera (where the tripod socket is) is also rubberized.
  2. Optional monochrome display. Just an indispensable thing for a professional. The display shows all the most important settings - ISO, aperture values, excerptsamendments exposure, the amount of free space on the card, white balance, picture quality, flash mode, battery charge, focus point and all that is possible. When the camera is turned off, the number of frames that can be taken to the remaining space on the memory card remains on the display. The monochrome display is larger than in younger models Nikon D90, D80, D70(s) D50, D7000.

  3. Dust and moisture protection. Of course, it is worth mentioning that the protection will be complete only if there are dust and moisture protective lenses, but in nature I have not seen such, because I will say that the camera perfectly tolerates light rain, dust, dirt and slight frosts.
  4. Using the card CF. Big card CF can reach enormous read/write speeds, which is very important for continuous shooting, and indeed for copying files to a computer. Although, my CF 32GB 400x during operation showed itself to be only 5MB/sec better than SD 32 GB class 10. As you understand, the Nikon D200 can handle even 32 GB normally.
  5. Huge continuous shooting buffer. Buffer can store 21 RAW files. Given that the maximum shooting speed 5 frames per second, the camera can click as long as 4 seconds in quick mode. 4 seconds is already a normal indicator. For example, my Nikon D90 starts to slow down after three seconds of filming at a speed of 4.5 frames per second. Also, keep in mind that when shooting in JPEG, the buffer becomes almost dimensionless.
  6. Whole 10.2 megapixels. Chasing megapixels is not worth it at all, but still 10.2 MP is enough for shooting in almost any genre. Of course, more is better, but I do not see any difference between the 10.2 megapixels of my Nikon D200, D80 and 12.3 megapixels of mine Nikon D90. Anyway, baby Nikon D40 with its 6.1 MP it can sometimes do with sharpness Nikon D90 with the same lens - look at the section Battle of Megapixels.

An example of a photograph on a Nikon D200 without processing. High ISO 1600

  7. The matrix on ISO 100 allows you to get just a very good picture, everything above ISO 400 is already a very bad result. About it a little lower. Having experience working with processing images from different cameras, I can say that at low ISOs, at some points, a CCD image is simpler and easier to “bring to mind”. The matrix of the Nikon D200, although in some respects similar to the sensors used in the models Nikon D80, D40x, D60, D3000but still different. Details here.
  8. The camera has focus motor, this will allow you to use any optics that can focus on Nikon, for example, the camera works great with non-motorized lenses Nikon 50mm F1.8D, Nikon 70-210 F4, etc. The motor buzzes when focusing, but nothing can be done, in order to save money on non-motorized lenses, you can be patient.

An example of a photograph on a Nikon D200 without processing. High ISO 1600

  9. The camera can measure exposure with any lens (and without a lens at all). This means that it will be possible to work in semi-automatic aperture priority mode with any manual lens. Even if you wear instead of a lens tin can, the camera will still measure exposure meter correctly. Also, for older lenses, a menu for setting the focal length and maximum aperture is provided. It is very, very convenient. Personally, I put on the programmable button the choice of focal length and aperture for manual optics. When I use my Helios-81N AI-s type, the Nikon D200 camera correctly displays 50mm focal length and maximum aperture F / 2.0, and if I twist the aperture ring on the lens, the camera also understands this and shows the following values F / 2.8, F / 4.0, etc. Important set manual lens parametersfor matrix metering to work, otherwise only spot and center-weighted will work.
  10. At the camera 11 focus points and just one cross-shaped sensor. Now 11 focus points put on the simplest Nikon D3000You won’t be surprised. But the camera has 4 focus modes and a special switch for them.

  11. Nikon D200 has a minimum 1/8000 short shutter speed, sometimes a very useful thing, especially when you need to shoot at aperture of 1.4 (or higher) on a sunny day. And still, Nikon D200 can fulfill non-standard excerpts type 1 \ 750, 1 \ 3000, 1 \ 90s, etc., which cannot be selected in priority mode excerpts or in manual mode. Intermediate values shutter speed allow adjust exposure more precisely. For example, with such shutter speeds, younger cameras, like Nikon D80, D90.
  12. The camera can control flashes in command mode. That is, if you have a Nikon D200 and any flash like Nikon SB-600, SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, SB-910 or third-party manufacturers, you can put it in a radius of 10 meters and shoot using Nikon's creative lighting system NIKON-CLS.

    Sample photo on Nikon D200

    Sample photo on Nikon D200

  13. And of course, fast flash sync. You can shoot with an external flash that supports FP mode, with any shutter speedup to 1/8000. Very important and necessary parameter.
  14. A bunch of all sorts of connectors that you rarely use, it's just too lazy to write about them, who cares, download the instructions and read for yourself.

    Example photo on Nikon D200

    Example photo on Nikon D200

  15. Limit ISO 100-1600 (100-3200). At the moment, this is not the best indicator, but I would say very low.
  16. The camera has  1.005-pixel RGB matrix metering sensor exposureinherited from the flagship camera D2X. Measurement works very accurately.

  17. Those who have read up to this seventeenth paragraph have probably already grown tired. There are many more important points that should be written about, but this is already necessary for a very narrow circle of people, therefore we will limit ourselves to this list of important aspects of the camera.

Disadvantages. Since I took the camera to a professional type, you can demand a lot from it. because I consider serious shortcomings:

  1. The delay when you turn on the menu or view pictures. Delay does not always occur, depending on whether you watched or took a picture on the camera. Usually, after turning on the camera and pressing the menu button or viewing the image, the camera “thinks” for 3-5 seconds, which is a disastrously long period of time. The card activity indicator is on. Actually the “communication" of the camera with the card takes this time. On my two cards, 2GB and 32GB 400x, the delay time is the same. This is not a very important point, but sometimes waiting for 3-5 seconds is still not a hunt. But the camera turns on instantly.

Example photo on Nikon D200. The light meter easily copes with non-standard tasks

Example photo on Nikon D200. The light meter easily copes with non-standard tasks

  2. The battery runs out very quickly. Really I have enough battery for 400 shots. You can still take a small photo shoot on one charge. But, for example, at a wedding without 2-3 batteries just can not do (checked more than once). This disease is treated by buying a special booster. The booster adds convenience when shooting, but it takes extra space in the case and adds extra weight.

    Example photo on Nikon D200

  3. The viewfinder does not give 100% frame coverage, but only the usual 95%. It's really annoying when after the picture you find an extra piece in the photo that fits in these 5%, which were not visible behind the scenes.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  4. 2.5 inch display. Yes after Nikon D90, D300 look at 230.000 points after 900.000 points at D90 not that anymore. Of course, offending the old D200 is bad, but the display is not the same as before. Many say that the D200 gives a bad picture, from personal experience I will say that professionals will not distinguish a picture from Nikon D200 and Nikon D7000 with the same lens and the same settings at low ISO when printing and / or on a computer monitor (I personally conducted an experiment that confirmed this). But almost everyone will say that the picture looks much worse on the Nikon D200 display than anywhere else. Why is not known.

  5. The standard lack of gum in all Nikon cameras is that they swell and fall off. Let me explain - the rubber, which is so nice to the touch, swells over time and comes off.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  6. Very poor results at high ISO. Given the age of the camera, you can come to terms with this.

  7. It’s bad that when switching the compression level, the RAW buffer still shows 21 frames. For example: compressed RAW weighs about 10 MB, and not compressed about 16 MB, it would not be bad if the camera placed more frames in the buffer with the compressed format.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  8. No focus adjustment. Honestly, when I bought a Nikon D200, I was just saddened by this, since for some of my lenses adjustment would not hurt.

    Example photo on Nikon D200.

  9. Nikon D200 is one of the few cameras that does not have a menu for post-processing photos. In general, no processing of the filmed material with the camera is provided. I was very surprised when I discovered this. You can't even convert from RAW to JPEG.

A couple more moments:

Nikon D200 bribes with its ability to enlarge the image is actually 1 to 1 with one button. This is real, very much accelerates the choice of a sharp picture. Moreover, the camera enlarges the picture at the focus point. The camera is not such a familiar (for all users of the line below) the method of zooming the picture. To enlarge the picture you need to press as many as two buttons and the main control dial. But the multi selector has 8 directions. Impressions are positive.

Choose and don’t know what to take?

It is unlikely that someone will say with certainty whether the camera is suitable for you or not. At the moment Nikon D200 is outdatedher descendant Nikon D300 Has matrix cleaning, Live View and less noise at high ISO. Nikon D300s in addition, it also shoots video and clicks the shutter much faster, and even on 2 cards. Well and Nikon D7000 in general can still better. Well, if it’s at all hot to take a camera of a similar level, you can look at Nikon D80, which has similar image quality with the Nikon D200 and the only significant difference is not the ability to work with manual optics. Hack and predictor Aviator:

Nikon D200 - professional digital SLR camera, which is now not available and which can be taken at a ridiculous price. Able to do almost everything you need. Not suitable for beginners in photography - there is not a single automatic shooting mode, for everything you need to think for yourself. It is also hardly suitable for the pros, since it quickly eats up the battery and has strong noises at high ISO. But in fact, the only drawback of the camera is that now there are much more advanced Nikon D300(s) D7000that make things even better. So who will suit Nikon D200 - I can’t say for sure, but in skillful hands you can squeeze a lot from her.

I also face the choice of d200 or d90 both bu, at the same price.
Tell me which camera has the best ISO and color rendering.

  • Vladimir

Good day, who can tell what the problem is, put Jupiter 37 on the D200 carcass, set the focus and aperture on the menu, but the camera does not change the aperture value when I twist the aperture on the lens, what is the problem?

    • Amatich

The lens is manual, everything is with hands, and therefore does not show on the display.

  • Boris

Andrey - bought a D200 for a friend with a shipment from St. Petersburg .... I can't find his rate of fire - I press d-4 frames / sec .. he writes at the top - in the CL mode ... how to find such a mode?

  • Boris

I found it myself - everything is done at hand

  • julb

Hello everyone, tell me how can I check the camera down correctly? I ordered a second-hand d 200 (lens 18-70) everything is ideal and the price is not expensive, but I’m still afraid that there is no focus adjustment, how can I immediately check it in the mail?

  • Sergei

Nikon D200 came to the end from Japan with a mileage of 31000, the manual Tokina SZ-X 60-300 f4-5.6. A smile from ear to ear, happiness has no limits. First impressions HE ARE HUGE and Heavy, but not critical for me, before that there were D40 and D50. Impressions from the shooting are also at their best, though the hand is very tired from the habit. Happy as an elephant. A carcass with delivery came out 9000 rubles.

  • Sergei

By the way, the manual in Russian, who needs it, everything is clear and intelligible. (I don’t know, you can leave links here if you delete something.) http://nikon-d200.smartphone.ua/instruction.html

Are there any MASP modes? It can not be that everything is in manual mode ??? thanks!

  • Elena

good day. please help with advice.
bought nikon d200 bu. everything seems to be working fine, but I just can’t understand how the “retort” works if you use helios 44-2. something needs to be pressed for it to focus? Or is the principle of the motor not in this and you need to manually wind everything up?

    • Gennady

Manual optics are everywhere focusing MANUALLY ...

  • Kirill

    Hello, tell me please !!!
offer D200 with 200k mileage, but the shutter has been replaced - how long will such a device still live? is it worth taking?

Good afternoon, I have been the owner of this miracle “machine” for more than 2 years, a misfortune happened recently ... the plastic glass on the Control Display somehow burst. Help determine the model of the display, glass, or where to look. Everyone is grateful for your help

Please tell me, I bought a D200 this week, now I use the Soviet lens.
It so happens that I caught sharpness in the viewfinder, but the picture turned out not sharp ... is it something with the camera or does it happen, and why does it happen ???

  • anonym

it happens, but there are many BUTs. Maybe it's in the lens itself, it's easy to check - install another lens, if everything is in order with sharpness, then the problem is not in the carcass, we are looking at the lens. In Soviet lenses, it happens that during disassembly, the lens was placed on the wrong side, or you came across a bad copy, Soviet optics is famous for a wide range of quality. But you can check your lens specifically, it is enough to focus at an extremely close distance, where the subject will be clearly visible. There is an option that you shoot on a completely open hole, and it often lathers, I advise you to also look at the diopter adjustment dial, perhaps it will be enough, just adjust it for your vision. Also, do not forget about the nikon flange focal length, if you put a lens without a corrective lens, lenses such as Helios 44 (the list is large), then do not expect sharpness at a distance of more than 1,5-2 meters, you need an alteration for the flange focal length, for more accurate advice you need to indicate which lens you are shooting.

    • Kirill

helios 44M ... the grid on the viewfinder is sharp, so the diopters are probably all right ... moreover, it happens that there is sharpness in the viewfinder and the picture turns out to be sharp, but sometimes it is sharp in the viewfinder, but the picture is not sharp ... I photograph up to 2 meters ... the lens is still one

      • Amatich

        Hands do not shake?

  • anonym

Well, if the lens happens sharply with this lens, but it doesn’t happen sharply, then either set the shutter speed to more than 1 \ 100 and more and cover the aperture for a couple of stops, nikon has a focus confirmation, the green dot in the lower left corner, when it is sharpened, it focuses It doesn’t blink, it just lights green

  • Igor

I want to purchase a Jupiter 200A lens for this Nikon D37 camera, that's just a snag, there is no sharpness at infinity, only with the aperture closed as much as possible, the KP-A / N adapter was used. Should it be so or not? Thank you in advance for your response!

    • Lynx

so it may be. the problem is that the KP-a / n, due to “technological laziness”, were made on the same working distance as the shank on the M42 (that is, 1,5 mm longer than that of the Nikon). This is usually compensated by the fact that Soviet lenses were made with a small "overshoot for infinity" and this overshoot was usually enough to compensate for 1,5 mm. However, there are Jupes that are made one-to-one, without overrunning, and alas, in this case, you will need to cut to infinity or the shank or the lens itself.

  • anonym

it happens that when you twist the lens to infinity, then bish all the way, there is no sharpness, at that very infinity, but you do half a turn back and it appears, this is more likely associated with specific specimens, if, when aiming at infinity, a green dot is on - the camera confirms the focus, then there may be a problem with this lens, or maybe you have an overestimated criterion for sharpness, post a test photo on a file sharing service and discard the link in the comments, then it will be possible to evaluate your lens, I can throw off an infinity photo from my 37th and find out the truth: )

Lyrics about love for Nikon D200
D200 haunted me for several years. On the http://wowcamera.info/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=82 and http://ru.pixel-peeper.com/cameras/?camera=2 I was just dumbfounded by the colors d200 and d80, but I didn’t dare to buy myself because STOP! - “outdated camera”. “It’s heavy, there’s no video, the autofocus is archaic, there is no face recognition, a dead noisy matrix, the battery is eating up - it’s melting before our eyes, it has a 2 kopeck inch underscreen. Forget it and don't even think about taking it! " - the familiar "photomonsters" told me. I sighed, bought another device, more modern, with a low-noise matrix and “face recognition” and calmed down for a while. And yet the D200 followed me. I always got stuck on it, when it caught my eye in the ads of photo flea markets, beckoned and forced to re-read reviews.
Once, I accidentally found out that some students were given some kind of “big” Nikon, well, a good one, in a box, but they just can't shove him off for the second month. I called, met and oh, a miracle - this is IT! Young people asked their uncle for a deposit of 3000 rubles and gave the device until tomorrow “to check”. I check - from the traces of use, there are only slightly peeled rubber bands in several places, everything else is flawless, without a single scratch. Mileage - 23 thousand frames, all the plugs are in place, the battery is new, two cards for 4 and 8 gigs, the staff 18-55 is like new, the matrix is perfect. A box and documents, even a check for 57 rubles for 000. True, it's a shame - there are docks in the box and a check for a baht pen, but not available ((.
The first impression is that you are holding the real thing! No modes SPORT, LANDSCAPE, etc.! Almost all the settings on the pimples-buttons-switches - the controls are almost one to one, like those of the "thick" profiles - super ergonomics! Second impression and shock after the first shooting. Colors! I wanted to shout: “They are real !!!”. And this is in a half-peg! (I just banged a red brick wall from about 10 meters).
The next day, the guys asked me for another 3 thousand (!) And were very pleased (my happiness was immeasurable). Now I just enjoy this car. Like very much! For high ISO, shooting all kinds of concerts, "dark deals" there is Pentax. For “warm communication” and for the soul, there is D200.
Arkady described the advantages and disadvantages in great detail - respect! I think there is no need to repeat myself. I will say one thing - such an “old horse” in skillful hands will not spoil the furrows for sure, but it can very much please.
In general, our meeting took place and I think our love is also for a long time. At least, I find myself not looking at new items of cropped photographic equipment for a long time, I'm only interested in glasses. Even if I buy a full frame, I will definitely leave the D200 - they don't sell friends.

    • Igor

Thank you friend! (burst into tears, there were only a few minutes left until the final selection of an additional bu fotik for old Nikorniks for the soul of 200 or 90)

  • Vladimir

you’ve got one * measure exposure * on the D200 review (-The camera can measure exposure with any lens (and without a lens at all). This means that you can work in semi-automatic aperture priority mode with any manual lens. Even if you put a tin can in place of the lens , the camera will still measure the exposure-)
    -
help pliz, the problem - Nikon D3100 D200 D300S do not see the lens tokina af sd 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 and do not focus, and the film Nikon f-501 focuses. Is this normal or is the chip in the lens burned out? what to do. thanks.

found, but please tell me, what needs to be changed there?

    • anonym

Dianochka, you had to buy a D3000. With D200, you are tormented, it seems to me)

    • The Hedgehog

Do not need to change, but learn the materiel :-)) Learn the concept of exposure, what affects it and how to manage the camera settings.

  • Andrei

I took D200 about a month ago and finally stopped being a victim of marketing. There was once a D80, then a D90, then a D700 ... I remembered 80 for a lively color and I wanted to go to the restroom from the color of the 90th. 700 was not long when I realized how much money was needed for optics - I sold it. And then I came across an ad for D200, except for rubber bands, ideally, I bought it without hesitation. Now I take pictures for my own pleasure, I read the news about new cameras calmly. The NIkkor 28-105 / 3.5-4.5D is excellently equipped with a staff, AF is accurate and fast. I don't recognize cheap AF-S lenses, but there is no money for expensive ones.

    • Igor

Thank you, a solid comment, it helps to decide :)

    • The Hedgehog

Buy D700 and understand that you need a lot of money for lenses ... Some kind of unreasonable approach to business ...

  • Cyrus

I say D200 is the best choice for poverty! I work as an engineer, and therefore - this is my choice! (my wife has 7100 and a set of Tamron 17-55 2.8, 11-16 Tokin 2.8, fixed Nikon 35 1.8). I'll take a fishie for myself from Sam-yong and you look life will get better ... eh-ma, life is a tin, God forbid anyone)

  • kraft703

Hello everyone. Who knows how to set the focal length for Helios?
    Thank you.

In the menu, a lens without a CPU focal set and that's it!
