It so happened that Nikon D100 is my first DSLR, now, in 2014! I read the review with interest, thank you. Only you have all the conclusions that this is a decent semi-professional camera, and no matter what you compare it with, you do not recommend it.
I really like that there is no frame that defines the face, and all sorts of sunsets. Works fine

Lena, congratulations, you have a great camera, do not think to sell it. I had a D100, they stole apartment thieves, as I have been looking for a long time to buy it again. This camera takes great photos, just don’t shoot in JPEG, it’s bad taste. Show RAW in Capture One and you will be happy.

Comment of a professional photographer with 25+ years of experience

Strengths: Nikon D100 was produced from 2002 to 2005, but, despite the age of this model, it is quite a working tool for a professional photographer.
In fact, very little has changed in DSLRs since the days of the D100 and Canon 10D. And today it is possible to shoot with “ancient” cameras in almost the same way as with modern ones. In the vast majority of shooting situations, there is no difference between those released 5 years ago and modern ones.
    Interface Nikon D100
The Nikon D100 has a much more convenient interface and control than the newer D70, D50, D40. The 80s are a bit more convenient - with one button - but still inferior to the D100.
After the new cameras, it is immediately evident that the D100 has a very small LCD display - 1,8 inches. But if you look, this does not reduce the functionality at all, since the screen is needed in order to see the menu, histogram and overexposure. View the picture does not work either on the screen D100, or on a larger screen D80 or D200.
    Nikon D100 Speed
The operating speed of the D100 is slower than the D70. But the modern D80 camera is not doing much better: it quickly turns on and takes the first 3-4 frames, then the brake is the same. “Brakes” interfere with shooting “at machine gun rate” only, which rate happens ... well tell me - how often do you need to press the shutter button faster than once a second? And how often are 3-4 frames missing in a series?
    Nikon D100 picture quality
The D100 and D70 have a minimum ISO of 200, not 100 like the D80, D200 and other modern Nikon cameras. But there is one thing: the picture from D100 to ISO 200 is better than from D80 to ISO 100. The fact is that the D80 is compressed raw, and this setting cannot be disabled. For example, raves with D100 and D80 weigh the same - 10 MB each, for D200 (the same matrix as for D80) - 15 MB. That is, in the D80 file, some of the information is simply thrown out. And this is sharpness and dynamic range. The loss in quality is about 1.5 out of 12 bits, that is, almost 10%, and this difference is very noticeable when shooting portraits: due to the loss of subtle transitions of skin tones, faces look “plasticine”.
Of course, this only applies to raw. If you shoot in jpg, you will not be able to distinguish successful images (in the sense with a correctly defined camera exposure and white balance) from the D80 and D200.
As a result, after processing the ravine in Photoshop or Capture NX, a picture with the D100 surpasses the picture of any amateur device (at ISO up to 400 - but higher than 400 you will not get a normal picture on any Nikon camera, only Canon 5D and 1D Mark II, III here).
In fact, pictures with Nikon D100 and D2x differ only in detail, that is, color reproduction, sharpness, dynamic range of the D100 - a professional camera. I can say the same about the interface with ergonomics: the convenience of the case, buttons and menu settings of the D100 are on top.
By the way, the working life of the D100 is more than 2 times that of the D3x, which is probably due to not worse build quality and lower speed. The only useful feature in the D80 that the D100 doesn't have is wireless flash control. All other features of the D80 to a normal person who knows how to process files will never come in handy.
However, if you use only budget class lenses, such as Sogma 18-55 for $ 100, then neither the D2x, nor the D100, nor the D200 will be different from the D40x. The only difference is that the former will at least be able to precisely focus on the object.
    Weaknesses: speed
Commentary: Despite the fact that the Nikon D100 is Nikon's very first semi-professional digital camera, it surpasses all modern amateur and most semi-professional cameras in most characteristics. Ideal ergonomics and light weight (unlike analogs from Canon and Minolta), large and bright viewfinder (not worse than only in Nikon D200, Canon 5D, Sony Alpha 100 and professional cameras). The main difference in ergonomics is a very convenient arrangement and functionality of the buttons and the presence of all necessary for a professional device and the absence of unnecessary options in the menu and buttons (for example, the direct print button, which is mandatory for Canon).

Among other things, this is the only semi-professional device for which there is a battery handle that allows you to use not only 2 EN-EL3 batteries (EN-EL3a, EN-EL3e) or 6 AA batteries, but also 6 SR-123 batteries (like the Nikon F80, F100, F6).

The D100 is the only Japanese-made semi-professional camera in the world. It is not surprising that it turned out to be the most reliable in its class, for 5 years there have been no cases of factory defects or breakdowns during operation. I personally saw a perfectly working Nikon D100 with a range of 500 thousand frames, it is still alive today. For example, the D70 shutter lives a maximum of 80 thousand frames, and in most cases breaks by 30 thousand, the same applies to all amateur and semi-professional Canon 300D, 350D, 20D, 30D, 5D cameras.
The Nikon D100 has a professional full-frame shutter with a two-curtain system, which is the most reliable in the world and allows you to achieve absolute shutter accuracy.

The Nikon D100 has 6 megapixels, not 8 or 10, as in modern amateur cameras, but in terms of color rendition in highlights, it significantly surpasses them. I compared the D100 with the D200, the picture of which is incomparably better than that of any Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony amateur camera in all respects. The D100's picture is even sharper than that of the D200, so if you interpolate the 6 megapixels of the D100 from the raw file to 12 megapixels, the picture is in no way inferior in sharpness, and surpasses the D200 in color rendering at ISO 320-200. The only semi-professional device that surpasses the D100 in image quality is Fujifilm S3 Pro.
In conclusion, I want to recommend all lovers a closer look at the Nikon D100. If you are not faced with the task of repetitive, wedding or sports shooting, requiring a constant speed of more than 3 frames per second, or tasks requiring an ISO of more than 400, the D100 will be an order of magnitude better than any modern amateur apparatus

I respect the d100, and I agree on the issue of the progress / degradation of cameras. But let's be honest: his steering wheel is a quiet horror, and does not go into any frame compared to the well-thought-out system in the d70 and beyond. As for the d80, you are wrong, because even in the RAW format the d80 easily takes 6 frames in a series, please indicate the exact data and do not mislead people. Everything else, too, with a pitchfork on the water, because similar comments were written 10 years ago :)

D100 as a professional model, has a battery handle.
        Multifunctional Battery Charger MB-D100
One or two rechargeable Li-ion EN-EL100 batteries, or six 3 V LR1.5 batteries (size AA) can be installed in the MB-D6 battery pen to increase the shooting or viewing time. In addition, the handle is equipped with a shutter-release button, main and auxiliary control dials for the convenience of working with vertical-format frames. A microphone integrated in the handle provides the ability to add sound memos when viewing photos. MB-D100 also has a ten-pin connector for connecting additional equipment (remote control).

Sorry Oleg, in your words it smells of unhealthy fanaticism, I agree with Arkady that the DSLRs have 6 sensor matrices, you need to choose live from the same list and use the 100th camera I agree with Arkady, it’s not convenient to operate. Regarding the shutter, this is generally joke. I think everyone knows that this is a card game, whoever is lucky, I know people who use a shutter of 1000000 or more on amateur mirrors, and sometimes they die on professional ones. In general, do not fool people with their heads, I agree with Arkady that 70 km, even 40 is more convenient to operate.

Arkady is undoubtedly right that the camera is morally outdated. But at the present time, relatively cheap. With good light, a good lens, and in “good hands,” the pictures are very good. On prints 15 * 20 you will not see the difference with much more modern and expensive devices. In any case, the differences will be so small that you can be confused with which camera was taken. But the color can pleasantly please those who know its "taste". The camera is really very reliable and durable. For me it is not very comfortable in the hand (relative to others). 4 gig memory cards are very slow, and 1 gig works great. Only RAW and only him !!!! Developing in ViewNX2 is quite normal. The family is like a cat, from which there is "no sense", but everyone loves and everyone uses. Who cares, a few photos here https://yadi.sk/d/GB369xnhVoDJo you can see. Everything is in RAW format and you can play with the development. In any case, the idea of the camera will be somewhat closer ...

In landscape and architectural photography, the multi-pixel novelties of the D7100 type are far more interesting. Below is an example of a portrait with a relatively inexpensive Samyang 85 F1.4

Is it because of the expensive (higher quality) lenses? The point is the lack of light. There are many options for solving this problem, ranging from “puff on the forehead”.

Valeriy said good advice - drawing shadows from RAW is not the best option, even if there is no noise, the color will be wrong. During the day, puffing on the forehead will highlight the shadows, make them softer, the color will definitely be better, the face will not become flat, because there is the sun - the first source of light. Set the external flash to TTL and adjust the compensation -0,3 -0,7, use the diffuser on the flash. This is the simplest thing to do to improve daytime photos in bright sun.

The D100 is a great model if you know how to use it. Pros - semi-professional with a screwdriver for a low price, survivability, a second settings screen, no amateur shooting modes, ergonomics
Of the minuses: yes, there is not enough light, there were misses with focus, five focus points, after 11 on the other hand, the D90 does not immediately get used to
Unfortunately, the model I got was not in very good condition, but after a couple of weeks of restoration it worked no worse than modern ones, and this is due to the fact that at the moment it is over 10 years old!
